Cardinals new look
I know we have lost a couple of players this season, and I know some of our fellow fans are upset about it and think we are reverting into the "same old Cardinals", but let's all take a deep breath and step back from the ledge. We all loved Q, but as many of you have already stated, this trade was absolutely expected. He was a great player for our Cardinals, but it was time to part ways, and I believe Early and Steve B can fill that spot admirably. Besides, we still have the best WR in the game.
We lost Rolle, who is now the highest paid safety in NFL history. I don't think there are many Cardinals fans who aren't ok with not making him the highest paid safety on our team. Besides, we are replacing him with another safety who has very favorable stats, is the same age, annd costs a lot less.
We lost Dansby. Anyone out there surprised? I guess I didn't realize that not making the Pro Bowl in your 6 year career was grounds for being the highest paid linebacker in the league, but maybe that's just me.
Warner retired, again, I don't think a lot of us are surprised. Leinart is in great position to prove a lot of people wrong about him being a bust, and to prove the Cardinals right for drafting him 10th overall 4 years ago. I personally think he will be just fine riding the horse that is Timmy Hightower and Beanie Wells. Oh, and when he does need to throw it, he has Fotz-the best WR in the league, Breaston-who has always been outstanding starting for Q, and Doucet, a physical 3rd WR who plays a similar game to Q.
I know our defense still needs some help, specifically at LB, but our secondary of A-dubb, Rhodes, DRC, and (I hope) Toler will be formidable. If we find a pass rush via remaining free agents or the draft, I believe we could be looking at a 3rd straight division crown.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

I'm with you.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.
I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.
This is what I've been thinking the whole time
What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.
Revenge of the Birds
My best friend is a Dolphins fan, and my brother in law is a Giants fan
And neither of them are excited about the signings. Living in Northeast PA, I have a lot of friends who are Jets fans, and every single one of them thinks we made out on the Rhodes deal. I know we’re still missing a few pieces, but all in all, we’re definitely moving in the right direction as a franchise, this off-season is no exception.
We all bleed Cardinal Red, but most of us don't recognize it!
The Cardinals should have done whatever it took to sign Rolle and Dansby before they got to free agency. They are both entering into the prime of their careers and the Cardinals can’t afford to let the nucleus of their team depart. Sometimes you have to overpay for players to show the others players that you’ll take care of them down the line. It’s a slap in the face to guys like Adrian Wilson who signed for less because he believed in the team and then because of their cheapness let it dissolve. I understand the Cardinals would never sign someone like Haynesworth or Julius Peppers but they can’t continue to be the cheapest team in football and expect fans to support them. I think they should have signed Rolle and Dansby and then go after a mid level free agent like Joey porter, then draft heavily in the front seven and shore up their depth in defense.

disagree
You NEVER want to overpay someone. It gives you the warm fuzzy for a moment, but then when salary cap time hits it will make you either throw up in your mouth or crap your pants. I know from personal experience you cant do much once you have done either, and the taco from the taco stand (warm fuzzies) is just not worth it.
Never do card tricks for the group you play poker with.
we matched rolles offer
and as sick as it sounds would have made rolle the highest paid safety over adub, sickening, and he declined.
Dansby was and still is not a top five LB, not worth the money he got.
This is a business, paying those amounts would have not been good for business.
if you ran a car dealership.
Would you pay 2 LAMBO prices, for a SILVERADO (dansby) and a IMPALA (rolle)??
by fansincejakenrob on Mar 9, 2010 9:57 AM MST up reply actions
We didn't match the guaranteed money for Rolle.
Rolle was after the guaranteed money, like most players are. The more guaranteed money a player gets, the less they have to worry about what just happened to him (getting cut on the year that pays out the most).
still got
Pretty close to matching it

ehh
whats a few million.
well regardless, he was offered a decent contract, more than a-dub and by the cards and he declined.
This guy is getting paid more than, wilson, polamalu, reed, dawkins, yikes!
Bye bye failed CB.
Hello seasoned, FS.

More than Wilson and Polamalu!
Well in that perspective, Rolle, please enjoy the snow. You are not worth more than Wilson and Polamalu!

A slap in A-dubs face
would have been paying Rolle more than him. Rhodes will be at worst a lateral move for less money.
+2

The Cardinals made attempts to re-sign Dansby way before free agency began and he fired his agent.
Dansby was going to test the marktet regardless of what the Cardinals did. The Cardinals tried to get a new deal done with Rolle before his bonus hit, but he also wanted to test the open waters.

Cornerbacks
Is anyone else hoping we address this issue as well? I feel like I’m the only one. If we resign Ware I think we would be a very solid group at the safety position. However, for the past couple of years I have been very uneasy about the lack of depth we have at cornerback. That is the one position where the 4th or even 5th name listed on the depth chart can see several snaps a game to significant playing time based on the opposing teams offense.
DRC and Toler seem to be the favorites to start, I think BM will make a hell of a nickel corner (where he excelled in Pitt) but I’m still not sold on Michael Adams or Ralph Brown (who I believe is a free agent).
Do you guys think this is an issue and if so how do we address it?

I'm with you on this one
I think Toler and DRC could form a very good 1-2 punch at CB, and combined with A-Dubb and Rhodes, we should have a very good starting secondary. I think McMuffin (Someone else on ROTB called him that and I liked it) will be a better fit as the niclel CB than as a starter, but we still need at least 1 more decent CB. i think we look for one in a middle round, similar to how we got Toler, and see if we can develop them into something.
We all bleed Cardinal Red, but most of us don't recognize it!
billy davis
said TOLER was the best man-to-man CB on the squad.
uhh TOLER better cover than DRC.
I liked that statement, heres comes round 2 and started reps for toler.

Pretty good compliment considering DRC is also on the team.

That's awesome
I like DRC/Toler 1/2, McMuffin as Nickel, and draft a mid to late CB.
That makes me get excited about the defense.

McMuffin!
I approve of this nickname. And nearly choked on a banana muffin when reading it for the first time.
I don't know who came up with it
But whoever it was deserves praise. I literally laugh out loud every time I read it because it fits so well…

cut mcmuffin
resign hood to play nickel, hood can catch, mcmuffin, not so much.

next year
one side of the field will be off limits. DRC’s side. and thats good enough, its rare to have 2 shutdown corners.
A hard hitting safety, rhodes, hold down the other side of the field.
by fansincejakenrob on Mar 9, 2010 9:58 AM MST up reply actions
agree to a degree
While I wouldn’t call DRC a shutdown corner yet I see your point. However if Toler does win the starting job he’ll be thrust into a very difficult situation. With teams purposefully avoiding DRC’s side he’ll get the majority of the throws his very first year as a starter. Remind you of anyone? BM got raped because of this very same situation last year and our pass defense as a whole looked terrible even though 80% of the passes were over BM or Michael Adams. Hopefully he steps it up big in his first season as a starter (if he gets the job).
by cardsfanforlife24 on Mar 9, 2010 10:16 AM MST up reply actions
DRC did shut down some good receivers last year.
I believe that during that Seahawks game, Housh got around 150 yards and DRC’s guy [Burleson I think] didn’t catch anything.

Lets not forget DRC had knee surgery this off season
Ive had knee surgery myself and can tell you that we may not get the same DRC back. Its going to take awhile to get that extra step back and you can bet hes going to get tested.
his knee surgery was minor, nothing to be too concerned about

OR
Bmac… uh, Bmuf(?) finds his manhood and plays like an animal next year.
Though as a good tackler he could be an excellent nickel who occasionally blitzes and because he plays closer to the box he could help a bit in the run defense allowing us to blitz our OLBs more often (Porter anyone?). Just thinking out loud on this one…
They are who we thought they were!
That could happen

I agree but would just have a hard time seeing Bmac being paid $5mil a year as the nickleback

Well
We are stuck with him. And we’re not my old college coach either, we play who’s better no matter the circumstances around them.
They are who we thought they were!
I'm not saying he should start because he's making more money
And besides they’re not stuck with him. Hood got cut because he was making too much to play nickle. McFadden makes more than Hood did and that money could be better elsewhere imo.

Wow, that opening sentence is a dousy.
A little too much double entendre. Eww!
I defeinitely agree
I’ve been telling anyone who will listen that we’re not in as bad shape as it would seem. The defections hurt but the organization has done a good job of positioning the team to deal with them effectively.
I’m tired of hearing sports writers say that Matt Leinart wasn’t good enough to beat out Kurt Warner so the coaching staff obviously has no confidence in him. Kurt Warner would have kept 80% of the QBs in the league on the bench so I don’t think that’s such a negative thing. When Matt played as a rookie, he showed great leadership skills. I think with time and repetitions, he will find his touch and you won’t see him overthrowing as much. You have to keep in mind that he didn’t get any reps the week leading up to the Titans game. He had a few high throws early and settled down in the second half when he found his groove. I’m excited to see what he does as a full time starter with the weapons he has and the line that is much better now than it was last time he was the starter.
I hated to lose Anquan because he is an absolute BEAST (good luck in Baltimore) but I think Early has the tools to do a lot of similar things. I wouldn’t be too surprised to see him move into the starter’s role and keep Breaston in the slot to work the same matchups he’s had the last couple years. I don’t know that you replace someone like Q, but we’ve positioned ourselves to lessen the blow.
Dansby and Antrell were overpaid. Dansby was solid but not a superstar and I’m glad we stuck to our guns and didn’t overpay. Antrell was a playmaker but he could be a liability at times because he went for the big play and either missed tackles or gave up big gains over his head. I would’ve liked to have kept him if at a much lower cost.
We’ve had a lot of guys that performed quite well in their second season recently and I hope that trend continues with guys like Rashad Johnson, Greg Toler, Will Davis and Cody Brown. Hopefully we can continue to draft well and find a ILB this year. I hope we don’t trade away draft picks (our future) for some stop-gap players this year.
I know that EVERYBODY here wants Shaun Hill
Actually
now that he’s available I think he’d be worth a look, when you see his record as a starter and his TD/INT ratio it makes me wonder why the 49’ers never liked him as a starter.
