What about Derek Anderson???

Derek Anderson was just released by the Browns and already there is talk of the Cardinals taking a good look at him. He was a pro bowler (with the Browns!) and is still young, about to turn 27. In my opinion, he would be a great QB to bring in to compete against Leinart seeing as how he has been in the league for several years and has been successful. I feel he would be a better pickup than Whitehurst or Batch and Carr if he hadn't been picked up. What are the thoughts?

His name has been knocked around by fans.

Has there been anything out of the Cardinals organization about being interested in him?

No word yet

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

He'd be a good option at number 2 but if he couldn't cut it in Cleveland I wouldn't want him throwing the ball here.

What did they have in Cleveland for him to succeed though?

Edwards had a good year and he went to the pro bowl, then he couldn’t catch a baby if it was gently handed off to him. No RB, no other noteable WR. Joe Thomas was about his biggest offensive weapon.

by AlaskanCard on Mar 9, 2010 2:42 PM MST up reply actions

that's the biggest difference if he comes here

He had ZERO talent around him and he still managed to have a small amount of success. The guys not the second coming of Warner but he would be a very decent #2 option. I’d certainly vote for signing him over giving up a third round pick for Whitehurst.

True

But signing Anderson would stir the pot. Are we really ready for another QB controvercy?

I’m backing him for the moment, and I agree that he deserves a shot at this point. But his previous comments when Warner was up and coming to take over the starting spot were very personality revealing. I wonder how much he has grown up from that time.

Who could cut it in Cleveland?

I’m not down, give me youth. I don’t think he will take 2nd string money any ways.

Do you really think he’s going to hold out for a starting job?

Frye's available?

Definitely would prefer him. Not a great talent at QB, but a studied, smart player with aspirations to coaching. He can throw in a pinch, help with plays, and teach the new guy. Perfect for what we need.

by tw3kr on Mar 9, 2010 10:39 PM MST up reply actions

what has Frye ever done to install confidence in anyone?

The best season of his career, in 2006, he threw 10 TDs and 17 picks. Outside of a decent completion percentage, fueled mostly by a good number in 2006, he’s terrible.

I have no idea why anyone would take Frye over Anderson.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Mar 10, 2010 6:14 AM MST up reply actions

What have you done for me lately?

Alongside all the stuff I just said, compare their stats last year.

DA started 7 games and accumulated: 44.5% completion, 3TD/10INT, 3 Fumbles lost, 0.8 YPC
Frye started 3 games: 60.9% completion, 1TD/4INT, 0 Fumbles, 10.3 YPC

I would say that starting at QB for the Browns is roughly equivalent to starting at QB for the Raiders. Both situations are utterly devoid of talent.

Now who’s going to cost way more and bitch when he doesn’t get revenge on his old team?
Hint:
“I know at times I wasn’t great. I hope and pray I’m playing when my team comes to town and (we) roll them.”

by tw3kr on Mar 10, 2010 11:58 AM MST up reply actions

well if we're reducing a combined 12 years of NFL experience to 10 games then yea that makes sense

Hey Tavaris Jackson completed 66.7% of his passes, had a YPA of 9.6 and QB rating over 113. Let’s trade for him b/c he’s obviously a great QB b/c he’s “done alot for me lately.”

Good point Bezekira. Unfortunately Matty has the self-confidence of a 14 year old girl going through puberty. While Anderson would put added pressure and (based on past experiences) possibly make Leinart do worse this is the NFL, you always have to compete for your job, it is never handed to you. Either Leinart will rise to the occasion or we will have an ex-pro bowler with great weapons around him to build off since he’s still relatively young. Let’s see what happens.

by cardsfanforlife24 on Mar 10, 2010 12:54 PM MST up reply actions

21 pass attempts?

At least Frye and Anderson played a decent enough amount to seriously gauge where they’re at in their careers.

Let’s continue the quiz then, shall we?
Which player had a lower QB rating in 2009 than JaMarcus Russell?

by tw3kr on Mar 10, 2010 10:50 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, I noticed that

Bears noting that Frye’s best game came against Baltimore, no? He also had 300+ yards passing in the Browns game.

If it wasn’t for one fluke season, DA would look quite a bit worse. Sure, it’s possible he’ll come here and take off, but I think the last two years indicate that he won’t.

by tw3kr on Mar 11, 2010 1:02 PM MST up reply actions

I think their all serviceable as backups.

Charlie Frye
Derek Anderson

Apparently he is ****** off at the Browns owners

And he wants to “roll” them [mainly for when he was booed after a knee injury in 08] with his new team. Its on the SBN main page.

I would still rather

have Anderson over Quinn and he is a better choice than Bulger or Batch. He wouldn’t cost us a #3 either.

13- Warner, 23- Sandberg, 40- Tillman, 11- Walter

by TBru on Mar 10, 2010 10:59 AM MST reply actions

I would be happy with Anderson, but I think Quinn would excel in our Offense

I would be very happy with a Leinhart/Quinn combo. I think they can both learn and grow here and they both have different strengths.

Quinn deserves a chance, and I think I would be happier with Quinn than Anderson.

We shouldn't be looking a gift horse

in the mouth. For a guy like Anderson to become available now is incredibly fortunate, we’d be foolish not to bring him in. For those who are worried about Leinart being the starter, how do you currently feel about our back-ups, should Leinart get injured this year?

No doubt, there isn’t much there right now.

by Long Beach on Mar 10, 2010 2:38 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah we have no backups

Signing DA would bring ‘veteran’ experience and then we can draft a qb mid-late round and brink back palko for the preseason again. I’d feel much better then.

by cardsfanforlife24 on Mar 10, 2010 3:08 PM MST up reply actions

haha yeah the "veteran experience"

is 1 more year in the league than Leinart

Yep, hence the quotation marks,

i guess its the best we can do for now though. Unless we get Batch but that would be making a different statement.

by cardsfanforlife24 on Mar 10, 2010 3:17 PM MST up reply actions

Although

seemingly more actual playing experience; however, that may be a misperception on my part.

I think Anderson could really resurrect his career here, if called upon. He never had the weapons in Cleveland that he’ll have here.

by Long Beach on Mar 10, 2010 4:29 PM MST up reply actions

No

If we want a veteran to resurrect his career here because we have great passing weapons, we should add Chris Miller to the squad.

by tw3kr on Mar 10, 2010 10:54 PM MST up reply actions

Speaking of

Chris Miller, funny you should mention him because if you look at the work he’s done with Leinart I can’t help but to think of the effect he’d have on Anderson. Keep in mind, it didn’t exactly set off victory bells when we originally picked up Warner, either.

by Long Beach on Mar 11, 2010 10:49 AM MST up reply actions

Okay

But Jake Delhomme has had one bad season and everyone says no, whereas DA has had one good season and everybody’s for it?

by tw3kr on Mar 11, 2010 1:03 PM MST up reply actions

Probably

has more to do with age and potential. I think it’s fair to say that Delhomme’s best days are behind him, whereas I think a lot of people would like to see what Anderson could do once he’s out of Cleveland.

by Long Beach on Mar 11, 2010 6:12 PM MST up reply actions

better sign a backup QB soon

if leinart fails he could be a stop gap for the year id like to have backup B4 the draft

by sportsfreakaz on Mar 10, 2010 7:50 PM MST reply actions

No Anderson

Anderson was a one year wonder in a weak year for quarterbacks. He never took the Brown anywhere and will do nothing to help the cards except take up cap money and waste a rooster space that could be used to get a real gem i the draft like Pike or Tebow.

by Redbird1 on Mar 12, 2010 12:09 PM MST reply actions

Maybe

but maybe not, I’d hardly call Tebow a ‘real gem’ either. More like ‘real long-ass project’. He was a one year wonder but he has a better resume than any quarterback currently on our roster. I don’t agree with it 100% either ‘Redbird1’ but unfortunately we don’t have too much to choose from as far as ‘veteran’ experience goes. : /

I think a certain amount of realism has to begin to set in about our back-up QB situation. Realistically, no QB in this year’s draft (outside of Bradford and Clausen) appear ready to assume a back-up role in 2010 so even if we draft someone we’re looking at our new third-stringer. To have an opportunity to get a back-up QB who is still relatively young with a Pro Bowl on his resume is pretty good, considering our other options right now are to (1)resign an injured and completely inexperienced Brian St. Pierre; or (2) bring in a destroyed version of what used to be Marc Bulger. Anyone else is likely to cost us something (i.e. – Whitehurst, Quinn, Hill, etc.) and I don’t see any of those guys as an upgrade over Anderson.

by Long Beach on Mar 13, 2010 9:31 PM MST up reply actions

Seems the Anderson naysayers

are saying no to him even tho leinart is getting sympathy for the same thing. They both were on crappy teams and didnt accomplish squat, except of course one went to the pro bowl and one didnt. Gettin down to the slim pickins and looks like Anderson may be the best player available at qb. I think the team would do good to give him a shot.

by Dem_Cardz on Mar 14, 2010 3:10 PM MDT up reply actions

if you dont sign Anderson

then you are looking at Leinart, a guy who has thrown about 3 nfl passes, and a rookie as your back ups. Pretty scary if you ask me.

i said for the 3rd string spot but i also think they should bring someone else in.

i think az goes to camp with 4 qb’s and the 3 besides leinart battle for the 2 & 3 spot. i’m not saying anderson won’t be one of the 4.

leinart =1st string. the 3 others compete for the 2nd and 3rd string the odd man out is cut.

if that wasn’t clear i’ll put it this way.

say leinart, anderson, whitehurst, and jarrett brown are on the cards roster going into camp. i think leinart should get the nod as the starter unless 1 of the 3 just blows him out the water. anyway, anderson, whitehurst, and jarrett compete for the 2nd & 3rd string spots and the worst of the 3 is cut.

by az78true on Mar 15, 2010 9:56 PM MDT up reply actions

Leinart

I think Leinart will be ok. I do believe that Derek Anderson would be the best option for backup. Anderson was playing for a Cleveland team that had poor line play and no real receivers once they dealt their star to the Jets. Here he gets Grimms boys with possibly one of the better receiving corps in the NFL. Big arm who can be taught to play smart. I see him as a Brad Johnson type who took Tampa to the Superbowl in 2003.

by Sidf_29 on Mar 15, 2010 6:52 PM MDT reply actions

Derek Anderson...

made 6 1/2 mill last year and played awfully, and his reaction when getting dumped is to rip the fans who cheered when he got hurt. And the fact that the next day he back-pedaled doesn’t show a sign of maturity, but that he got a call from hs agent telling him he is costing them both money.
Were the Cle fans jerks for booing an injured player? Absolutely! But DA is a well-paid PROFESSIONAL football player who should act like one both on and off the field. The fact that he didn’t take the high road shows an alarming lack of maturity for a player being touted as a ‘veteran’.
This guy seems like a ‘me first’ player who could be more of a disruption than an asset. I mean, if we draft a QB this year, does this guy strike you as someone who would work with a younger player? I saw no evidence of it in his relationship with Brady Quinn.
If this guy had an exceptional professional resume’ I would be more on board. But he doesn’t and I, personally, am not.
