Revenge Of The Birds Community Mock Draft: 20th Pick, Houston Texans
With the 20th pick of the Revenge of the Birds community mock draft, the Houston Texans select...
Taylor Mays | Safety | USC
GM: DaCards
Strengths: Mays is a rare physical specimen. He was blessed with a great combination of size and speed. He has good coverage awareness and has the athleticism to assist cornerbacks over the top. He has the frame and all the tools necessary to succeed in the NFL.
Weaknesses: If Mays can improve the fundamentals and technique of his game, he can develop into one of the best safeties in the league. He needs to work on tackling, rather then over-extending and sometimes missing the tackle. He also needs to improve the footwork in his drop.
Why they will draft him: I wanted a running back but that could be addressed in round 2. Their secondary is in shambles and corner and safety is their biggest needs. Mays is an athlete and can make the plays[at safety]. He reminds me a lot of Adrian Wilson and I can see him being used the same. He isn't that much of a reach at 20. His downfall is that he is easy to fool with pump fakes and tends to break on plays a little pre-maturely. His up side is unlimited and he has the speed and the size, and can also lay the hit. With an NFL DB coach he can become an elite safety.
Big thanks to DaCards for making this pick. That puts LAcardsfan on the clock with the Bengals pick and Hadrarius on deck with New England's pick. Please send me your picks to revengeofthebirds@gmail.com today. The remaining picks are after the jump...

Interesting pick.
I don’t see the Texans going with Mays just because he is so similar to their current starting SS Bernard Pollard. Pollard like Mays is very good against the run, but struggles in coverage. Mays has much more upside, but Pollard is still young, has proven he’s a solid starter, and the Texans have a lot of other needs.

I think it's a little early for Mays.
I think they can do better. He may have a lot of potential, but he’s got a lot of questions too…
with Dan Williams still on the board why go with mays?
At least you didnt go with Ryan Mathews… Mathews is not a 1st rnder… he is a 2-3rd rnd RB. This supposed need for a RB on the Texans is not as important as the other needs. such as CB, FS depth, O-line depth, NT. If anyone remembers the Texans from 2008 the O-line did well with run blocking, last year with the injuries the Texans run game was affected because there were no holes to go through.

Go Texans!
plus if we drafted a CB at this spot,
When Eugene Wilson gets hurt (which is inevitable) Glover Quin is a good backup for FS. I still think Houston should pick up a NT which would greatly help our pass defense opening up Mario, Okoye and your old friend Antonio Smith.

Are we going to finish late?
By my math we are going to finish our draft late. The first round of the draft is on the 22nd and at one pick a day we will finish on the 24th. Do we need to do a couple two a day picks to catch up? I can with the jets pick if needed.
Forgive me if this has already been mentioned – I haven’t been around much lately.

Maybe if the authors of the picks emailed just the pick to Andrew and he emailed it to the next author, etc.
Then several authors could all be writing their reasons for the pick at the same time and submit them to Andrew for positing 2 picks in one day? Just a thought.

I actually sent mine in a pick early.
Betting on the odds that the Bengals won’t be looking for the same player as the Patriots. I’ll cross my fingers for now since I didn’t write up a back up choice. I like your idea. It would smooth out the process.
