Revenge Of The Birds Community Mock Draft: 12th Pick, San Francisco 49ers

With the 13th pick of the Revenge of the Birds community mock draft, the San Francisco 49ers select...

C.J. Spiller | RB | Clemson

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Strengths: CJ Spiller is a dynamic athlete who possesses a rare blend of athleticism, balance and overall instincts as a runner.  Spiller has elite speed  can change the game every time the ball is in his hands. He displays great vision and patience at the line of scrimmage with the burst to explode into daylight. He does a nice job feeling out his blocks and picking his way through the line of scrimmage. He possesses the lateral agility and footwork to consistently make the first man miss and does a great job changing directions at full speed. Spiller gets up to speed quickly and exhibits a second gear in the open field. He does a nice job lowering his pad level on contact and not absorbing many big hits. Underrated toughness, able to break tackles.  Has soft hands and is a gifted receiver who possesses the ability to turn his routes up the field and make plays vertically. He catches the ball well out of the backfield and looks natural in the pass game.  He can provide the offense with great mismatches in coverage. Amazing ability after the catch.  Extremely good punt returner. No off the field issues.  He's a jack-of-all-trades who can hurt you on the ground or through the air. Spiller has that 'it' factor as a runner and is very instinctive in all areas of his game.  A real playmaker at the next level.
 .
Weaknesses: His main weakness is his ball security. He does not protect the football the way you want to see from a top RB.  Not a great pass blocker, can deliver hits but not big enough to stand and block. He lacks ideal girth and some question whether he can carry a full load in the NFL. He will not always be able to break it to the outside and out run everyone like he did in college.

Why the 49ers will draft him:The 49ers need to add playmakers. They may have a need in the OL, but this can be addressed later in draft and/or FA plus the draft is deep in OL - the team can't afford to bank on a return to dominance from Frank Gore. Spiller can bring the 49er's the element of the big play they've been missing on offense and special teams.   Spiller is a weapon of mass destruction that this team would love to have.  Spiller has the "it" factor. He can help by running "it," catching "it" and returning "it."

Another weapon in the run game

It’s not something I’d like to see SF do but with a so-so Alex Smith at QB it makes a lot of sense to me. Spiller can put points on the board and that’s all that matters at the end of the game.

I believe SF thinks Smith is better than so -so has the support of HC. He is only 25, had a final passer rating of 81.5 and is playing a second season with the same offensive coordinator for the first time in his career. SF feels pretty confident in Smith and the upcoming season.

Smith

While I have no idea if Alex Smith is the long term answer, I’m definitely more confident this season than I have been in any other season since the team drafted him. The OC issues are well-known, as the team is not installing a new offense, which will help the entire offense, not just Smith.

Additionally though, he’s healthy at this point in the offseason for the first time in a while. The last couple years he’s been rehabbing his shoulder at this point.

Finally, Michael Crabtree won’t be holding out, which means he and Smith can work on their chemistry all offseason.

Smith could be a spectacular failure this year, but I really think we’ll see some legit success from him. Of course, as I’ve said a million times at Niners Nation, I also might be considered a naive optimist.

The O.C.

thing will be very significant. I can’t remember who, but someone in your front office admitted they wouldn’t have taken Smith if they had known how much instability there would be in that position during his first four seasons.

So while I have been one of the louder ones to call you out on your optimism, I think this year could prove you right (as much as I hope not).

This pick makes sense

With the best OT’s and DB’s off the board spiller is a good pick. As a Cardinal’s fan I’d much rather see this scenario rather than the niners getting Joe Haden or Earl Thomas.

interesting picks

I’m a little surprised how quickly the offensive tackles have been going in your draft. I’ve heard some folks thinking the 49ers should reach for USC OT Charles Brown. Also, with Anthony Davis apparently having a solid workout earlier this week, the 49ers could maybe go after him.

However, Spiller is a pick many 49ers fans would be fine with.

Here's hoping

that if the Niners take him that he’s more like the next Reggie Bush instead of the next Chris Johnson.

Either way, I think he adds a missing dimension to their offense – hate to say it but this would be a good pick up for them.

Lets hope he winds uo being a Bust then.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.
