What's up Cardinals fans? Im quite sure that y'all are well aware that our teams are playing their first pre-season game against each other this Saturday. And even though it's just the pre-season, it's still gets pretty exciting. Obviously this game won't be as cut-throat as last seasons game but there's still plenty of things to look forward too.

If you have any questions about the Houston Texans, feel free to ask in the comments section below.

I think I read that you guys have one of the toughest schedules in the NFL this year

What are the expectations for this season considering that?

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.

That is a fact.

On top of playing in one of the toughest divisions in the AFC(South), we also face the Ravens (recently acquired Boldin), the Jets(Best CB tandem with Revis and Cromartie), and the toughest division in the NFC(East). It’s not going to be an easy road to the playoffs, but the players are optimistic.

Inside the locker room, the teams mantra is supposedly “PLAYOFFS OR BUST”. The coaches are optimistic and the players are fired up.

But it’s not the same around the blogosphere. You always have to be cautious when you’re a texans fan. We’ve learned to trim our expectations down so we can deal with the disappointment much easier.

With that being said, we do expect the Texans to make the playoffs. Even though our defense isn’t playoff caliber yet, our offense is. Im fully aware that a great offense + a below average defense never equals superbowl, but it’s enough to make the playoffs amirite?

San Diego Chargers, who is year in and year out a playoff contender

by TexansPride on Aug 12, 2010 4:21 PM MDT up reply actions

Speaking for me

that tough SOS has no meaning. It’s based on 2009 records and its skewed by 14-2 Indy twice and 13-3 San Diego and the “vaunted” NFC East (which is overrated IMO).

Is the schedule a cakewalk? No, but this team has shown it can compete with anyone. The expectation is playoffs. It doesn’t change if Schaub stays upright.

You guys are on the verge of a breakout season IMO...

I love the Schaub, Johnson show and I without a doubt think Fitz and Johnson are the two best receivers in the NFL.

I have a few questions to you guys and here they are:

Fitz or Johnson?

Who is the guy on your roster that is a presence and fan favorite, but might be a name we aren’t too familiar with?

Breakout player this year on your squad?

Good luck in the season guys, can’t wait for this Saturday I’ll be there rooting on the Cards!

Johnson, of course…

Presence/fan favorite you don’t know about: Glover Quin, did very well for a rookie last year most pass breakups on our team. Started since the fourth game.

Breakout player: Most likely Earl Mitchell. He has been doing very well in TC. Supposedly just as fast or faster than Amobi but about 12 pounds heavier.

from a biased Texans fan...

I’d take Johnson anyday of the week.
He’s led the league in receptions and yards the past two seasons.
And I’m sure yall saw the Reception where 3 cards couldnt stop him on his way to the endzone. That play speaks volumes about the type of player/athlete/beast he is.

Fan Favorite? I’d say SS Bernard Pollard who we picked up in the beggining of the season last year. Hard hitter, loud, crazy, just what the defense needed. His and Cushing’s attitude gave the defense a new swagger that Houston has been missing since their inception. Once he joined the lineup in week 3 or 4 ( cant remember which) the defense went from being on pace to break the league record for worst rushing D, to a top 5 team against the run

Breakout player….
Alot of experts and fans are picking Jacoby Jones, currently 3rd WR on the Depth Chart. He’s big and fast, and is capable of a big play everytime he touches the ball. Injuries and inconsistency plagued him, but Kubiak said that he’s “grown up” and is looking good.

Another player to watch for is Rookie RB Ben Tate out of Auburn. Picked him up in the 2nd round, and though he may not start or get many touches at the beginning of the season, I think he’ll be a big part of our run game down the stretch

Good Luck to yall this season as well and heres to an Injury free Saturday

by TexansPride on Aug 12, 2010 5:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Wow??? Did you see Fitz the whole playoffs 2008?

We had two other 1,000 yard receivers that season as well so of course he would not had as many touches on the ball as Johnson or the same amount of yards. Last season we stuck with a much more balanced offense and did not pass nearly as much as the previous year which directly effected Fitz’s numbers as well. Not taking anything away from Johnson at all, but I think this one is way too close to call so decisively. Both phenominal athletes and the best two WR’s in the NFL hands down.

I think Johnson has a half a step on Fitz but I think Fitz has a better verticle than Johnson. I don’t think you can honestly say who has better hands, apples to apples. Routes I’d give to Fitz yet Johnson has a knack for stretching the field.

This one is way too close to call to so boldy claim Jonson is the better receiver. No problem with you guys playing favoritism with him, just stay objective. We’ll keep Fitz :-)

Yall come back now, ya’hur!

I did notice that on the stat line, Fitzy's longest catch was like 40 yards or something.

I just have to go with Andre cause of homerism. Like you said they are so close it’s impossible. What it really comes down to is what do you want. Do you want a guy that can jump up and make any catch despite being covered well, or do you want a guy that is physical and moves the chains?

We've been spoiled to have both with Fitz and Boldin.

Now Early Doucet looks like he could be a Boldin clone so we may very well still have both. Plus Breaston.

by hadrarius on Aug 12, 2010 11:44 PM MDT up reply actions

I’m an Andre guy. He’s the kind of WR who can make a one-handed toe tap TD catch as he did in week 2 last season and the same guy who can steamroll players as he did against you guys last season. He can pretty much do it all and does so rather quietly. Fitzy’s right there with his great hands and leaping ability…dude’s a beast. He gets a good test this year in how good he can make Matt Leinart look.

Bernard Pollard, the starting SS. Every time this guy talks, I get fired up. His passion for the game is off the charts and he produces.

My choice for break out player? Jacoby Jones – WR. He’s big, strong, fast, and finally understands what it takes to succeed. If you’re in a deep fantasy league with a late round pick looking for a potential sleeper…..consider him.

The timing was horrible. Dunta Robinson could have even picked that pass off. No disrespect to DRC.

Beyond impressive

that he bounced Hayes off of him the way he did, made a 250-pound LB look like a DB.

by Long Beach on Aug 13, 2010 5:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Absolutely still impressive

just like how DRC’s pick 6 was still impressive regardless of the throw. Johnson doing that to McFadden and Rolle eases my mind about the fact that both of them are gone. Now for Hayes’ part I just try to block that out..

Knowing the kind of player

Hayes has been throughout his career (one of the better run-defenders in the league at his position) it told me a lot more about Johnson than it did our defenders.

Alright I get where you are getting at.

They were both impressive plays. Since I’m a Texans fan, I think Johnson’s play was more impressive, and since you are a Cards fan, you think DRC’s play was more impressive. It’s natural.

I might be a little late to answering the question,

But I will anyway.

The homer in me would take Andre any day, but Fitzgerald is younger and that’s about the only advantage he really has. They are both exceptional route runners and can cause havoc if they caught the ball in an open field.

The guy on our roster who is a fan favorite would be Jacoby Jones. Not sure if he really is the fan favorite of everybody but he’s definitely the blog-favorite. We even have a segment dedicated to his tweets of wisdom. Yall should check it out, it’s pretty funny.

The break out player this year would have to be Arian Foster. The dude started as a practice squad body and ended up working his way to the starting RB position in the last quarter of the season. And he did great, which brings optimism to a lot of us because our running game is usually very weak.

by Jordann on Aug 12, 2010 11:04 PM MDT up reply actions

Since I'm a Texans fan,

I’ll take Johnson. The only thing that separates them is that AJ can run any route to perfection where Fitz may not. I will give Fitz credit for being the better deep ball threat, for sure.

Couple of questions

I keep waiting for your team to have their breakout season, but it seems that will only happen if you play a contender each week. Any theories as to why you beat the good teams and seemingly let down against the weak ones?

Along with that, how many people are buying into Cushing’s overtraining defense?

Good luck to you as well, would enjoy seeing you overtake the Colts this year.

by Long Beach on Aug 12, 2010 5:22 PM MDT reply actions

I think most are not buying it, but hoping that it ends up being true for the sake of him being vindicated

We will be playing quite a few Contenders so that is good. A lot of the talk is that the Texans have matured and if they truly have then we shouldn’t let down against bad teams. We all have our hopes up, but still fear a let down.

Meant to ask earlier

how is Kareem Jackson looking? Will Dickerson make your roster, and if so, as a WR or TE?

by Long Beach on Aug 12, 2010 6:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Ok, somewhat mixed reviews.

He IS going against Andre Johnson a majority of the time so it’s to be expected that Andre is wiping him across the field but he has made one pass breakup that I can recall. He also hit Eric Winston (RT) pretty hard, then Vonta Leach (FB) hard too. So he is very physical, so far looks promising. I am sure other BRB’ers can give you better insight into Kareem Jackson. I have not followed as closely as most have.

Dickerson has made a few good plays too, some are surprised by his route running cause we were expecting something completely un-polished. I believe he makes the roster for sake of potential. Someone would snatch him up off of the PS. He will make it as a WR, that was said the moment he was drafted. again, hopefully someone else can come in here and clarify more.

by Schlauton on Aug 12, 2010 6:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Jackson’s looked no different than anyone else going against Andre Johnson. It’s trial by fire. I was hoping to see him against Fitzy, but no dice. He’s looked better against other WRs though. Gets beat a lot on double moves, but he’s physical and we’ll see how he fares against Marques Colston in 2 weeks.

Dickerson is making the roster. He’s a WR and been told to shadow Andre. I’m surprised at how quickly he’s progressing. He’s working third team, but he’s beating his guys on routes. I expect him to be the fifth WR and be utilized in the red zone with his size and versatility. He’s really got a bright future, imo. I’m excited to see him Saturday.

It's a constant struggle for us every year.

Just when we thought we had the answer to our running game(Slaton), he catches fumblitis and eventually got injured. Most of us would say that his weight gain in the off-season was the reason for his dropped production, but to me it looks like it was just a string of bad luck.

But the last quarter of the season gave us hope, as another running back emerged from our crowded back field. Arian Foster started the season in the practice squad and ended the season as the clear-cut #1RB for the Texans. He has the right tools to be successful in the one-cut scheme we have in place and he’s shown that the last two games of the season.

Behind Foster would either be the rookie Ben Tate, who looks promising; or the returning Steve Slaton.

It’s looking like the texans are going to be doing a running back by committee with Foster getting most of the carries, Slaton as the third down back and Tate to spell foster in goal-line situations.

Congrats Texans fans on finally putting together a contender

we as Cardinals fans know all to well the anguish our franchise puts us through year in and year out.
Andre vs. Fitz?
The way I see it, they’re obviously both phenomenal athletes. Too many positive attributes to list. However, this year (with Leinart at the helm), I would take Johnson over Fitz. Fitz has been a beast since entering the NFL, but broke out as one of the top WR’s with Warner at QB. A classic case of a QB making his WR’s better. Johnson has also been a beast since coming into the NFL, however IMO since you guys got Schaub, Johnson has made Schaub the better football player. That’s something we need Fitz to do for Leinart this season. I believe after this year and seeing his production with a below average QB we’ll truly be able to compare Fitz and Johnson better.
My question, with your teams obviously tough schedule, do you believe you guys have acquired enough skill and depth in your secondary from preventing some of the NFL’s top QB’s from tearing it up through the air? Since you guys play the Colts twice every year I know that has always been a priority, with the loss of Dunta Robinson, do you guys believe you’ve made strides, or possibly need a couple more seasons to build depth at CB?
Thanks and good luck with the upcoming season.

So many people outside of Houston think Dunta Robinson is good.

He is horrific. Losing him was not a loss, but more of a win(assuming Kareem Jackson can be pretty good). I would put him as a good nickel corner, rather than being a number 1 corner. People seem to forget he led the league in PI calls last year, while getting abused by every WR he faced. He got extremely overpaid by the Falcons, and Arthur Blank will once again invest his big money into a player who isn’t going to make it well spent money(Mike Vick being that first person).

We will need 1 or 2 more years to develop at CB, but it’s positive so far, considering our first three corners are either first or second year players.

I’ll say it again, Dunta Robinson SUCKS.

by bone31crusher on Aug 13, 2010 12:14 AM MDT up reply actions

That's what I figured

since you guys were willing to part with him even being in such a pass driven division. I guess his name carried him this past year, I think the rest of the league still thinks he’s pretty decent that’s why I wanted your guys’ opinion.
Would you consider your secondary your team’s biggest concern our are there other pressing issues?

by cardsfanforlife24 on Aug 13, 2010 1:16 AM MDT up reply actions

Secondary really is the biggest concern.

We have a lot of unproven/semi-proven talent, which leads us to hope that it could be good, but we really don’t know.

The next concern is the O-line. Many people hate Kasey Studdard and hope he is on the bench. Many of us want Chris Meyers out of the starting line too, but most are okay with him as long as our guards are decent. He actually wasn’t that bad, we just have a horrible taste after the by Kris Jenkins.

A lot of similar sentiment around here about Rolle.

Not quite so extreme. Don’t think you’ll catch too many commenting that Rolle sucks but he was surely over paid. Most of the folks still harping on the loss of Rolle aren’t even aware that he was replaced immediately or they try to down play Kerry Rhodes’ ability.

Wasn't going to jump in on the Fitz vs Johnson debate

but have to clarify a comment in Fitz’s defense. He has put up basically the same numbers throughout his career, even when we were playing musical quarterbacks. Prior to 2008, we shuffled Warner and McCown, and then Warner and Leinart. Regardless, Fitz put up the same numbers (basically) in 2005 and 2007 (near or over 100 receptions, and around 1,400 yards receiving) that he did in 2008. His numbers were down in 2006 but he missed three games. Last season, with Warner, his yardage was down but we know that was related to Warner’s arm injury. The point being, I don’t see where it can be stated that Warner made him better. Not that I’m saying having a HOF QB hurts, but if anything it could be argued that Fitz made Warner better considering his statistical turnaround after joining us.

On the flip side, if you look at Johnson’s numbers his receiving yardage went up considerably after Schaub’s arrival. If there’s one thing that tips the argument into Fitz’s favor, and it isn’t fair to Johnson, is the amazing post-season he had in 2008. But otherwise I’ll agree it’s splitting hairs to compare the two. Slightly different styles, but at the end of the day you’re looking at the two best in the league who will be game changers no matter who they have at QB.

Id love to watch Fits put Revis in his place

2008

The game where Boldin broke his face.

Well.

That is a true statement. But Boldin is a pro bowl guy, so he had to attract more attention than Steve Breaston did.

Someone correct me if I’m mistaken. We’ve crunched a lot of numbers here with regard to Boldin, Fitz and Breaston. The Cards not only performed admirably in the games they played without Boldin in the line up but Fitz had better stats without Boldin. Breaston’s stats were great too. Obviously his would be expected to go up though. Doesn’t contradict your statement at all. I’m sure teams were much more concerned with Boldin than Breaston. Performance wise they were solid without him though. A lot of people will be shocked by the Cardinals WR’s this year, providing Matt Leinart shows up.

The final analysis is that both guys are just incredible players and class acts.

My sentiments...

Who would win in a fight, Whisenhunt or a Hurricane?
Hold on, hold on, what if the Hurricanes name was Whisenhunt?

Contract issue aside

Who would the Texans rather have Andre or Revis?

Can we have both?

Cause that’s my answer.

Its possible

Talk your front office into trading for him all though I’m not sure what kind of future your team would have because you’d have to sell the farm just to acquire him not including what his new contract would cost

Pro's for Andre

He is arguably the best receiver in the NFL

Remember no matter where you go in life...there you are!

by McCards010 on Aug 13, 2010 3:19 PM MDT reply actions

Pro's for Revis

He is the best corner in the league (just until DRC dethrones him)
With Revis the best receiver from each team you face is shut down
nobody double or triple covers a corner.

Revis could miss two years of action

If he holds out this year, and the league decides they want to give baseball a fighting chance at the ratings game next year…

Woah man, calm down there buddy!

I don’t care what argument you make, I am going to pick Andre cause he is not an a-hole like Revis. “I want my money, I wanna be paid like da best when I only been da best fo one year” Please, give one more year of being the best and you will be paid the best…

Hes not that far off

He did just get a brand new contract with quite a few years left. Yes Andre has performed well for more then one year but both players were and are playing the Me card.

For all of about 3 days in the OTA's...not the whole dang TC.

After that Andre just did his thing and Bob opened up the wallet. Also, Andre is not guaranteed to be paid the highest. He actually has to perform the highest to be paid, there are tons of incentives in this deal.

This is true

But I don’t think Revis would turn down the chance if he got the same offer

The Jets have painted themselves in a corner with player contracts.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve read anything about non Cardinals football but last I heard they were setting themselves up for a lot of trouble in the near future with expiring / burgeoning contracts. They look to be in a win right now and damn the future mind set.
