NFC West Quarterbacks in their first Preseason games.

Now that all 4 of the NFC West teams have gone through their first Preseason games, lets take a look at how they did in their games.

Cardinals:

Matt Leinart: 6 of 7 for 49 yards, no TDs, no Picks, 95.8 QB rating.

Not bad, but not spectacular either. He was being pressured a lot by the defense and the pass blocking wasn't very good but he looked accurate. He did nothing to lose his starting spot, he was making good reads, but he wasn't looking the defender off, he was locking onto the receiver too often, something that has to be fixed up. As for that pass to Fitz, it looked like a good throw too me, the defender just went in low and hit Fitz in the knee.

Derek Anderson: 13 of 22 for 88 yards, 1 TD, 2 Picks, 45.3 QB rating.

Basically, he looked awful until his last drive where the Cardinals scored their first Touchdown. He was forcing passes and throwing it too hard on short passes. He looked like he was still in Cleveland to be honest, I know everyone is saying that he should be better with the talent that we have compared to what Clevelend had at Wide Receiver and the other offensive skill positions, but I don't know. Hopefully if he has to play in the regular season he will be better.

John Skelton: 5 of 6 for 84 yards, 1 TD, no Picks, 158.3 QB rating.

He looked pretty good, but it was against a 4th string defense running base schemes. So, basically it was like what he played against in Fordham. He made a really good showing, especially considering that he was struggling in camp. He has a chance to be a starter in a few years, but if you think someone like him from a small school will play like that as a starter right now you are delusional. Enough with the people who think that Skelton should start right now.

Star-divide

Now, for the rest of the teams. I'm just looking at the stats. I didn't watch the games [I have seen some highlights though], so I won't analyze them. If you saw the game, feel free to say something though.

49ers:

Alex Smith: 3 of 9 for 37 yards, no TDs, 1 Pick, 7.4 QB rating.

David Carr: 9 of 11 for 98 yards, 1 TD, no Picks, 134.1 QB rating.

Nate Davis: 5 of 6 for 84 yards, no TDs, no Picks, 118.8 QB rating.

Seahawks:

Matt Hasselbeck: 4 of 10 for 26 yards, no TDs, no Picks, 47.9 QB rating.

Charlie Whitehurst: 14 of 22 for 214 yards, 2 TDs, 1 Pick, 107 QB rating.

J.P. Losman: 3 of 5 for 7 yards, no TDs, 1 Pick, 25 QB rating.

Rams:

Sam Bradford: 6 of 13 for 57 yards, no TDs, no Picks, 58.8 QB rating. Also sacked 4 times.

A.J. Feeley: 3 of 6 for 19 yards, no TDs, no Picks, 56.9 QB rating.

Keith Null: 4 of 8 for 30 yards, no TDs, no Picks, 59.4 QB rating.

Thaddeus Lewis: 5 of 6 for 46 yards, no TDs, no Picks, 98.6 QB rating.

Maybe the gulls were smarter than I thought.

Whitehurst’s number are impressive. Glad to see Alex Smith is the future for the 49ers! You think they’re screaming for David Carr to be the starter yet.

In all fairness

It looked like all of the Colts’ backups were awful. Curtis Painter looked like garbage.

Bang on Smith, but all of his passes hit his recievers hands.

One was high and one was behind Vernon Davis, and the INT bounced off of Walker’s TE hands. He should have been 7-9 or even 8-9, but most were dropped.

excuses

regardless of how it happened leinart would have been crucified with those stats so boo hoo for smith. just more excuses for his career as per usual

regardless though i do believe smith will perform much better for the rest of the preseason and into the regular season.

I am a niner fan but I do like Leinart.

I believe that he will do much better than what is being said, he just needs the reps.

A 9ers fan rooting for Matt

… is this a red flag to anyone else?

That is why I did not write anything about the other teams QBs

I did not know how many passes were dropped.

Looking at the numbers for the other starters, it does make you feel better about Leinart.

we have leinart at qb

i’ll take hope in numbers from a flag football game if he does half decent haha

Rec'd

Because that’s how I feel. I’m hoping this will boost Matt Leinart’s confidence, and the O-line will fix itself, and next time Matt Leinart will blow everyone away.

by Skii on Aug 15, 2010 8:50 PM MDT reply actions

it can always be worse

we play in a division that seems to strive to be the shining example of how much worse it can be. even with that being the case Leinart played solid IMO. i’m sure it can’t be easy to look good while constantly under pressure. now that our O-line has some live game experience hopefully they’ll gel together within the next couple weeks and we can really see Leinart take some shots.

So my co-worker, the niner die hard fan, turned 180 degrees after this game about Smith.

Apparently he doesn’t follow the off season too closely because he didn’t know they had Carr. As soon as he found out it was all “Smith sucks and always has”. The week before Smith was going to smoke Leinart.

This drives me nuts

Oh, you like football?
Yeah, go Steelers!
How do you see the QB situation shaking out there this year?
I dunno. Charlie Batch sucks.
End conversation

Maybe because I’m a nerd but I finally have something to talk about with practically everybody (football) and I still have trouble because I’m now just a football nerd… lol

Die hard does not = informed.

Some fans are just all about how their team kicks ass no matter the reality. He only knows what he occasionally catches on ESPN I think.

I would take Whitehurst over Anderson.

Hawks were never going to let the Cards get him though.

by hadrarius on Aug 18, 2010 7:30 PM MDT reply actions

I have never seen him in action.

Having said that, I have never been overwhelmed by DA either. When the Cards signed him I was hoping the coaching staff saw raw talent that they could mold into a better player. Still hoping, less confident now!

by Birdman from Mesa on Aug 18, 2010 11:23 PM MDT up reply actions

The thing of it is

Anderson was cheaper (who knows how our draft would have looked with Whitehurst), and really would have a decent amount of upside if he’d get his knucklehead on straight.

That said, I haven’t been happy with the signing since I first heard about it, but I’m trying to step back a little and give the guy some time.

by tw3kr on Aug 19, 2010 2:23 AM MDT up reply actions

Losing a draft pick would have hurt.

I don’t think the Cardinals were going to chance anyway. The Hawks gave up more than the Cards would have. But apples for apples, I’d take Whitehurst over Anderson.

by hadrarius on Aug 19, 2010 5:52 PM MDT up reply actions

They expect whitehurst to start

We want Anderson as a back hes one of the most experienced and has so much talent he just needs direction and that’s what he is getting.

Remember no matter where you go in life...there you are!

Smith and Hasselbeck are looking better from what I've seen this week

Bradford looks like another spread offense QB who has no idea how to line up under center. I’ll post another one of these after the game on Monday.
