According to Darren Urban, Anderson is going to get the start against the Bears. Although he also said it isn't permanent. Its probably like how St. Pierre went in after Warner in the chargers game last year, then Leinart came in during the 4th quarter.
Whiz also said that Daryl Washington and Greg Toler will be starting this weekend.

WTF?
There goes my interest in watching that game.
I was wondering, "Why is that Frisbee getting bigger" and then it hit me.
Hopefully Whiz is just doing this to screw with the media.
Why else would he mess with Matt’s already fragile ego?
It must be that time of day, the time to focus on sports.

Ok then...
Wow, I dunno about this – despite the denials, I suspect this could mean that Leinart is done in AZ. Wish they ‘d have been able to figure this out earlier in the offseason though. Really not excited about going into the season with Anderson the starting QB. Wasn’t happy to hear we’d picked him up at all honestly. If he’s the best option currently, so be it. But if it actually pans out this way I think we’re in for a long season. PFT is reporting a rumor that the Cards are shopping Leinart to Seattle – can’t imagine Seattle would be interested, but who knows – maybe we end up with Whitehurst yet.
Yeah – Matt sucked last week, but honestly he only had 9 plays and the OL did him no favors at all. Really don’t know why they didn’t give him more plays if he was supposed to be the starter. Dumping him now based on an incomplete performance in favor of Anderson who didn’t show much either is very strange to my mind.
Really hope there’s an actual plan and not just grasping at straws trying to find the least worst option to run the season out with.
Surprising...
Wonder what’s really going down. Switching it around is surprising but trying to trade him this late is really surprising…

Jeesh the rumortoid is going nuts
After Lombardi saying Arizona is considering dumping Leinart, PFT adds rumor trades to Seattle? Doesn’t seem a good fit since our system calls for mobile quarterbacks, and it’s about time we’re done with the “PC likes USC alumni” bullshit since he pretty much proved it not true. But seems an easy rumour.
Crazy stuff. I’d take it more seriously if it wasn’t coming from the excrement of journalism (Lombardi and PFT).
Really hope it works out better than it’s looking. We need you guys to shut those gosh-darned Niners up.
Lombardi really tried to talk himself up like he knows what's going on in the minds of Whis and Graves.
Came across like a pompous ass.
lets face it
Leinart has done nothing to earn the starting job.
I know Cris Carter was slamming him pretty badly the other night, but I agree with a lot of what he says. Matt’s body language says it all.
I don’t know if D.A. could lead us to the playoffs or not, but look at it this way, if Leinart is done, and D.A starts, then we are that much closer to getting Skelton or Hall in the game…which IMO is for the best anyway. I am convinced either Skelton or Hall or BOTH could be the real deal.
http://www.reverbnation.com/chrisfarmer
His attitude is way too laid back.
Part of this is Whis giving him a wake up call surely. I still don’t see Anderson starting against the Rams.

or in the regular season. Matt’s had 13 pass plays all preseason. completed 10 and should have been 11. DA has barely completed more than 50%. Great arm terrible touch and accuracy.

That was my thinking as well whe I saw this. He’s saying “get you ass in gear, show some intensity and leadership or your toast”. Also, I wouldn’t put it past Pete to be interested in Matt, he still seems to be a big fan.
I’m still hoping for the best with Matt, though.

Everyone seems to forget not only do they see him in pre-season games but everyday in practice. I really don’t get why it’s such a big surprise to everyone they’re going to can Leinart??? He’s got a noodle arm and lacks the presence to lead a team.
I don’t think this is indicitive of D.A. being named our starter and it remains to be seen if Leinart starts the first game.

cmon man
You were probably on the Tyler Palko bandwagon last year too. You can’t judge QB’s by their performance against 3rd stringers and the future practice squad. Skelton and Hall may get their chance eventually, but there was a reason they went in the 4th round and undrafted. They are no Sam Bradford, Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez, Matt Ryan, or Joe Flacco. Neither of them are anywhere near starting this season, and probably not next season either which is why we really need either Leinart or Anderson to pan out this season. I’m personally pulling for leinart because I think DA is a piece of crap.
Anyone read this?
Coach Whiz is the Joker
Espo’s looking like he knows what he’s talking about.
Although, when asked what he’s looking for in the switch, Whiz simply said, “First downs”.
That tells me Leinart’s struggles really are having an impact on Whiz.
You guys are reading way too much into this.
Leinart isn’t done, he isn’t started either. He needs more than 9 plays to play, and he did complete some passes, and WR came up a little short. I think Whiz is just trying to get the team into a rythem. Anderson is not the answer. He is so inconsistent. One min he is great, the next he sucks. Watched him at Oregon State, same thing there.
Just makes me laugh....Some of you guys, not all, but most..........
Have been ripping on Alex Smith and saying “Why does the media give more credit to Smith over Leinart?”, well now you know. Leinart is a wild card. He has talent, but needs a head coach that will not throw him under the bus (like with what just happened). Leinart can succeed, but it will take a little time.
by ericalancanty on Aug 26, 2010 2:18 PM MDT up reply actions
Thrown under the bus?
Leinart is still scheduled to play, so I don’t think we can construe this as being thrown under the bus. Whisenhunt has said from the beginning it’s an open competition for #1 so it makes sense that he’d want to see Anderson with the first-string before preseason is over.
The other thing to account for, and I really hate to acknowledge it, is there was a very different mood from the huddle against TN when Anderson went in. Leinart’s body language has been the one constant that both the pro and anti-Leinart camps have noticed. Granted, it’s the same thing that Eli Manning was criticized for and he’s doing fine but I don’t think it’s sitting well with the coaching staff. Regardless if any of this means anything, you can’t say Leinart hasn’t received more than ample opportunity from this staff to prove himself as the starter – If DA beats him out that will the second time he missed his shot to be the guy.

Whiz is just trying to light a fire under Leinart
We know Whiz starts the best player so why wouldnt he give the same opportunity to Anderson that he gave Leinart. Let him start a game and see what he has in Anderson. At the same time he’s letting Leinart know hes not gonna have the starting job handed to him, he has to earn it. Besides we pretty much know Leinart is the guy, like him or not

Lombardi is one of the worst persons ever, press wise and as a human being. I know this because I’m a Browns fan.
That being said, I really do think DA will be your regular season starter. If you can home in his rocket arm, then you have a nice QB. I doubt it though because you guys have had plenty of time to do that with Leinart.
I can't believe Cribbs was considered the second best athlete in Cleveland.

Leinart
will end up being the starter. He will enter in the second quarter and if he is allowed to stay in the game, will show that he should be starting. There is no way to judge Leinart after only letting him play a few snaps and taking him out. There is just something about the mediocre play that makes me think they are playing possum again with the QBs. It is like they want the media and everyone to play into this and make them believe Matt is awful.
I really want Matt to succeed.
With that said, if we’re gonna get the same from Matt and DA then one will need to go to make room for Skelton. Matt salary next year could be the kicker. Especially if there is no football. But I prefer we keep all four and have them continue their growth process here vs another team. Just my $.02

whiz and leinart laughing their butts off about now
DA is the backup… if Leinart goes down, DA plays… NO, Whiz will not start Skel or Hall
this is nothing more than giving DA a start with the firsts in game conditions (as much as any Whiz extended practice can be called a game)
The plus for Whiz is, if they haven’t sorted the O-line difficulties out, it’s DA getting pummeled and not the Starter

I’m telling you, right now Whiz is just amazed that the media is falling for “The Cardinals have no offense” for the 2nd year in a row. It IS all pre-planned, and Matt will put the hammer down in week one.
Not sure exactly HOW many media members he has to pay off …
or how many of us are really innocent readers/bloggers …. maybe that explains HardHate, he’s a Whiz plant to create discord and give him more leverage with his players.

Didn't Leinart start a preseason game last year?
I wouldn’t look to far into this. I think Whis is doing exactly what he says he is doing. Providing a healthy competition and evaluating who is going to be the best person to start. I honestly don’t think they know who that is at this point. I think who ever shows they can lead a team to victory will win the spot.

Great news
IMO, those 3 guys give us the best possible chance to win games.
I also really like Hall and Skelton. Both have great work ethic, both are hungry since they came from small schools, and both have shown their potential in the preseason.
Strangeness. Anderson vs Cutler. Interceptionpalooza.
Hey Daryl Washington is starting! This should be the noise. Anderson getting the start in game 3 is nothing to fret over, and it’s absolutely not something to be excited about.

If Chicago's 1st string plays into the 3rd quarter, they won't have that excuse.
As I’ve heard others mention from time to time, I think Leinart needs to get into a rhythm. Combine that with the urgency needed to come into the game and run the two-minute offense, Leinart might be in a position to display his best attributes without having to think. The two minute drill should be scripted well in advance, and he could begin his quarter of play with some 1st down success for his psyche.
That is my hope.
Okay, on ESPN
One of their Monday Night Countdown guys started laughing when he said Leinart and Andersons’ name.
Schefter said Leinart hasn’t gotten the job done in Preseason and OTAs, and he thinks Anderson has outplayed Leinart [No freaking way that is true from what I have seen]. He also said the Locker room likes Hall and Skelton, and thinks they could be better than Leinart and Anderson.
Carter thinks the move is scary. Doesn’t like Leinart’s body language and leadership.
Keyshawn said to get Warner back. Arizona has a chance to win the division, but not with these guys.
Ditka said that he doesn’t know Leinart, he was a great college QB, but he doesn’t know how much of a leader Leinart is. He did seem like he was more fair to Leinart than the other guys were.
Someone else said that Leinart and Anderson should ask Aaron Rodgers what it is like to replace a legend.

A comment I saw on some other site about all of this
Whisenhunt has been doing this every preseason. He did it when Kurt and Matt were playing for starter a couple years ago, he did it for Matt and St. Pierre for backup role last year, and he does this for every position that doesn’t have a potential pro-bowler. This is Whisenhunt’s philosophy. Every position is an open competition unless you’re already established yourself as a top player. Hell, he had two rookie WRs running first string last game but you don’t see all the stories about Breaston and Fitz being benched.
http://blog.azcardinals.com/2010/08/26/anderson-to-start-at-qb-in-chicago/
“Coach Ken Whisenhunt said that today after practice, although he emphasized this is simply flipping the script from last week – when Anderson played with the first unit after Matt Leinart came out of the game. Leinart will still be the second quarterback in, and he’ll get his first chance to run the two-minute offense at the end of the first half and then play in the third quarter.”
Also, since the media and this board hates perspective, I’ll do the honor and split it up into digestible chunks since this board has A.D.D.
Derek Anderson is making about $800k more than Leinart this year. Players have to earn their paycheck, especially of the bench player is making more than the starter. Not only that, Anderson’s job isn’t as secure as people think. Max Hall has been operating the offense well in practice (and in the preseason game after his shaky start). Skelton is a lot like Anderson but more mobile and had a great preseason game against the Texans. Both are on very cheap contracts, especially compared to Anderson’s $7mil over two years.
If people think this is Anderson winning out, that hasn’t been the case so far. By all accounts of those that attended the entire training camp, Leinart was the winner. Anderson has put up a schizophrenic preseason and Leinart hasn’t been used much in the preseason, with 13 passes compared to Anderson’s 41. The flak that Leinart has received for his preseason performance is unfair since he hasn’t gotten any help in pass protection or the run game.
The move is coming off of a Tennessee practice that may surprise people. Leinart looked good in practice. Anderson, on the other hand, was getting chewed out big-time by Whisenhunt, namely for his lack of touch.
Anybody that watched the Cardinals last year saw that the Cardinals were a dink-and-dunk pass team with throws almost never beyond 25 yeards. How does Anderson’s lack of touch fit in here? Not well. Whisenhunt either wants Anderson to finally realize that he shouldn’t always be throwing bullets, or he has to mold a gameplan around him since what he certainly does not fit last year’s scheme.
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/Blog/KentSomers/96094
“There has been some speculation lately, such as this column by Michael Lombardi of NFL.com, that the Cardinals could release quarterback Matt Leinart before this season.
I’m told the Cardinals have not discussed that possibility. As it stands now, Leinart remains the starter and is expected to be behind center on Sept. 12 when the Cardinals play the Rams."
Last line is the most important one. Also, third preseason game isn’t important for Whisenhunt. He didn’t gameplan this year’s, last year’s, or the 2007’s.

But I find it hard for Whiz to start Matt on Sep 12th if he doesn't perform really well against the Bears
I would agree with what Sando says here “”http://twitter.com/espn_nfcwest/status/22202787130" target="new">Ken Whisenhunt would not demote his starting QB in third week of preseason if he thought that QB had earned the respect of the locker room".
I think that it’s pretty much official that Matt’s grip on the starter position is shaky as hell and he’s gonna need one heck of a performance to impress the coaching staff. Poor guy, if Whiz does not give him more chances during the next 2 games then he did in the last, then I guess Gambo over KTAR was right when he said Matt was never Whiz’s guy and Whiz probably never wanted him on the team in the first place.

I think if he didn't want him on the team
he wouldn’t be here. However, I do think this is the final wake-up call for him. If he gets clearly ouplayed by DA against the Bears I’d say he’s in serious trouble.
This is all so laughable
And it seems the people on this board are the only ones aware of what is going on. Anderson has not been named the starter, only that he is going to start this game. Unless ML gets hurt, God forbid, he will be the starter in STL in game #1. I will stake what little repuatation I have on it.

When the Cardinals get back to the playoffs again, and they will this year, and ML has a good year, everyone on ESPN will be raving about what a genius Whiz is because of the way he handled this situation, while giving ML only mild praise. I can feel it coming.
Does it matter either way?
Come on. Leinart and Anderson are both just varying degrees of awful. Though knowing that, why not try to milk the last glimmer of production from a guy the franchise invested so heavily in?
Seems pretty clear to me that you guys are tanking for Locker. Though even with the two-headed ineptitude monster at QB you’re going to win 7 or 8 games in the NFC-Worst, so Locker isn’t a realistic option either.

Guess what, Tony Romo has been struggling in the Preseason. BENCH HIM FOR KITNA!!!!
http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post/_/id/17365/anyone-worried-about-tony-romo
I realize that Tony Romo had a rough outing against the San Diego Chargers on Saturday, but I attributed most of that to him being worried about playing behind two reserve offensive linemen. But longtime Beast enthusiast and SI.com columnist Don Banks feels differently. Here’s what he wrote Wednesday in his preseason “winners” and “losers” column:
“In the Cowboys’ first three preseason games, Romo has completed five, four and four passes, with a 13-of-28 showing overall for 141 yards. Romo was just 4-of-11 in the 16-14 Dallas win at San Diego this weekend, for 30 yards with both a touchdown and an interception. He threw off his back foot on several occasions, as the Chargers hurried or hit him, and never once looked comfortably in the flow of the game.
“With everyone considering Dallas to be one of the NFC’s strongest Super Bowl contenders, Romo only has a couple more weeks to find his game. At the moment, he looks like he’s feeling the pressure, both literally and figuratively.”
So is anyone besides Banks worried about Romo? I haven’t seen a lot of evidence that he’s feeling any “figurative” pressure. But it will be interesting to see how he plays in Houston on Saturday.

IF
- Leinart comes off the bench and moves the ball well down field this all goes away.
- Anderson gets the start we need to re-evaluate the chances the Cardinals make the playoffs. See the errant pass to an open Breaston in the Titans game. He’s going to be a 50%er. Half the time you’ll be pleased, the other half you’ll be pissed.
What everyone is failing to notice
is that Whiz did this between Matt and Kurt. Matt was the starter under Denny. Whiz left it that way when he took over. He was using Kurt as a change of pace /hurry up QB during games (because he knew the system better than Matt). When Matt broke his collar bone—Kurt took over and played great during those 8 games (20 + TD’s)—but Matt started the next preseason as the starter in games 1 & 3. Kurt was the starter for games 2 & 4. Matt played very badly in game 3 against the Raiders (3 ints) and Kurt took over and had a great 2nd half in the opening game. That’s the point when Kurt went back to his HOF type of play (he was far from that in the 2 years prior).
Matt knows this system, which is probably more important to Whiz than D.A.‘s touch. (or lack there of). Matt will play in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. He’ll get a 2 minute drill in. He’ll hopefully get a few 1st downs and maybe a score or 2 to ease the critics.
I don’t think Whiz will trust the team to DA or either of the rookies this year. But if he does—I trust him. He’s the best coach this team has ever had!!! There’s no reason for me or any other fan to 2nd guess the expert.
