I was going to wait until tomorrows batch of links to post this, but it is too big of a story for me to wait on. Leinart spoke earlier today and he feels like he has outplayed the other QBs and that this decision is because of something "beyond football". Matt said that he hasn't talked to the coach yet about all of this during the interview or the press conference, but Mike Jurecki said they have spoken to each other now. Hopefully they can settle their differences with each other.

I saw Urban answer someone's question about which QB he thought

had the upper hand. He said DA was “in a real good place right now”

If he stays, they would have to renegotiate his contract.

I don't think there is any way Leinart stays if he's not the starter.

That’s probably what he hoped to accomplish by making these comments. Make it clear he wouldn’t be a back up and force an honest meeting with Whisenhunt.

Here's the quote from Urban's blog
Whiz did say it is “always dicey” to have a rookie as a backup, should something happen and the Cards decide to move one of their veterans. But he did say both Max Hall and John Skelton have impressed him and he feels more comfortable about such a possibility than he did before camp

It looks increasingly like this is the case

but it depends a little bit on which journalist you are reading. I’m just gonna wait and see.

I'm only going by Whisenhunt's actual words.

He’s opened the door for Leinart by implying he could be ok with a rookie back up. It remains to be seen if Leinart walks out, gets tossed out, or closes the door.

If I am Whiz

I don’t let Leinert get away with publicly questioning my motives. If the child legitimately had a question as to what he could do better he should have gone directly to the coach instead of saying it’s “probably not football related” On top of that he’s delusional enough to think he severely outplayed his competition when a qb who is brand new to the system has matched or exceeded his play for 2 straight starts

With Leinart as the starter we got beat by two first-string units

when DA started we didn’t. Shocking what moving the chains does for a running game. Since I can’t get an answer from anyone else who thinks they understand the QB position better than the Whiz, what is it that you know that he doesn’t?

by Long Beach on Aug 30, 2010 9:32 PM MDT up reply actions

These games also don't count

It’s called PRE-season for a reason. Nobody cares when baseball pitchers get lit up in the preseason, only to do well when the games matter.
It also helps when your line gives you more than 1.5 seconds to make a read and throw, which we can all agree DA had better blocking in his time in.

by UAwildcats on Aug 30, 2010 9:36 PM MDT up reply actions

I do agree

that DA is better at getting the ball out fast, and throwing well while taking a hit. But if the linemen need Derek to “fire them up” in order to do their jobs, they don’t deserve to be paid.

by UAwildcats on Aug 30, 2010 9:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Kind of agree with you on that

I hear what you’re saying, but that goes back to having confidence in the guy with the ball – that is a dynamic you see on every team at every level of play. This is where I think (conceding the idea of think as opposed to knowing, not having any direct knowledge of his command of the huddle) Leinart has consistently lacked in his pro career – getting back to that “it” factor.

by Long Beach on Aug 30, 2010 9:52 PM MDT up reply actions

what ???

DA got it out ‘Quicker’ ? The Coach actually made that statement ? He had 3 times more time to pass than Leinart had and used it. How was that getting it out quicker ?
oh, wait, his swagger so blinded the poor deluded fool he didn’t notice the time going by when DA had the ball. I don’t get any of this. I fully expect a scandal to erupt about Whiz, DA and hot-tubs because nothing else I have seen can remotely explain ANY of this to me.

Anyone want to Photoshop Whiz's head onto Matt's body in the Hot Tub

And make DA into one of the chicks in the tub?

No offense Joe

but listening to you and scsa69 I’d think that Leinart’s hot tub ladies have taken over your screen names – serious man crushes you guys have on him.

Glad to see some fire and fight

But too little too late.
And ps, outplayed? No way, not played well enough? Yes.

Leinart has outplayed Anderson...kind of

Derek Anderson 31/53 287 yards (58.5%) 5.4 yards/attempt 2 TD, 2 INT QB rating 70.2
Matt Leinart 19/23 161yards (82.6%) 7.0 yards/attempt 1 TD, 0 INT QB rating 110.3

On the surface Matt’s stats do look a lot better, but when looking at moving the chains and sustaining drives Leinart has only produced 8 first downs in 9 total series to Derek’s 21 in 14 series. Derek does make mistakes but you cannot argue that the offense is stale with him at the helm.

One thing to note also is the defenses these two were going against
against Houston Leinart played the Texans’ first stringers and Anderson played primarily the second and third string guys. Houston is expected to have one of the better defensive lines in the NFL, as Leinart was running for his life most of the game while Anderson got better protection.

-against Tennessee again Leinart played the first-stringers and Anderson played the second team

-Against Chicago Anderson started and played the first string defense, and when Leinart worked it looked like the first stringers were still in, however the Bears were missing Urlacher for the game and Briggs at this point.

This is not an easy decision to make… I think with our D and running game we should be fine no matter who starts. But all of the negativity coming out of a quarterback contraversy does not give us good karma.

Imagine if the Cardinals were on Hard Knocks instead of the Jets....

It would probably be even more packed here with all the controversy that would create…

That would be a fire storm, there would be thoughts from all over the league

speaking of which, I read a somewhat surprising article over at the USC site (you probably linked it) where even they were calling Leinart out for his reaction (at least some, I haven’t looked at it recently).

I shouldn’t really say surprising, a lot of people here were skeptical when I told them I thought Leinart would be fine this season.

The USC Blog on here?

I haven’t looked at that one yet, but I’ll go check it out.

There's another report Leinart will get cut.

These national guys are reporting this stuff without Hard Knocks being here. If it was I can only imagine the crazy things that would be reported and said.

Good reading

I know they can’t, but I would really like to know who they’re talking to. I will agree that it has to be giving the coaching staff some sleepless nights, what they’re supposedly contemplating is very gutsy.

Assuming they both have okay games this week

Do you think they keep Leinart around in case DA sucks? If we turn into a Cleveland-type situation…….

by tw3kr on Aug 31, 2010 5:01 AM MDT reply actions

I think so

but it is a tough situation. Let’s say one of them gets hurt, do you really want a rookie starting? Of course, does anyone believe that either Hall or Skelton clear waivers? Do you keep Leinart knowing it’s a virtual lock that he won’t be back after this season?

by Long Beach on Aug 31, 2010 6:09 PM MDT up reply actions

I think Leinart will want out if he's not chosen as the starter going into the regular season.

In fact, I think Leinart is the catalyst for the news that he is being shopped around the league. It’s not just writers blowing smoke anymore. It’s been confirmed by other teams.
