8-31-10: Arizona Cardinals Bird Droppings

CHICAGO - AUGUST 28: Matt Leinart #7 of the Arizona Cardinals walks in the bench area during a preseason game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on August 28 2010 in Chicago Illinois. The Cardinals defeated the Bears 14-9. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

As I mentioned yesterday, Leinart has made news again by claiming that he thinks the demotion goes for reasons "beyond football". As you would guess, this just leads to more headlines of this Leinart/Anderson debacle. Luckilly, Matt has talked with Coach Whiz in private, and hopefully they repaired the relationship that was probably damaged over the last week. The one positive? At least the Cardinals aren't on "Hard Knocks", imagine how crazy things would be if that was the case.

Another note, after the final Preseason game against the Redskins, I will be writing something about the two QBs, their strengths, their weaknesses, and who I think should be the starter after seeing how well they both preform. I'll also go over some of the problems I had with this entire situation. It will probably be up sometime on Friday.

Now, on to the Links...

After practice, no QB decision yet
The Cards just had their first practice back after coming home from Chicago. No, coach Ken Whisenhunt did not announce a starting quarterback yet. He said both will play in the preseason finale against Washington "unless something changes" (and no, that isn’t some hint to a trade or something).

Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart questions reasons for demotion
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart exercised some diplomacy last week when talking about being demoted to backing up Derek Anderson. On Monday, however, Leinart didn't hold back, saying he must have lost his job for reasons other than performance.

This coming from a 49er fan.

I just can’t see Whiz starting Anderson over Leinart. Matt has played a lot better in the preseason than Anderson. Anderson has had 1 good year but that was ages ago. Leinart does what a QB should do, not turn it over. If Whiz starts Anderson, you might beat the Rams, but it will go down hill very quickly for you guys. Leinart is your best shot. If you lose, heads will start to roll.

PS...

Why have you guys stopped talking crap about Alex Smith, trying to say that Leinart is better and all that? Just wondering.

Leinart is better than Smith. If he was on the 49ers he'd be the starter.

I don’t think Smith sucks. He’s just not anything to write home about. The Leinart / Anderson issue clearly goes beyond what is happening on the field with them individually. If Leinart comes out against the Redskins chucking 40 yard touchdowns drive after drive he still may not get the start or perhaps be given it grudgingly.

by hadrarius on Aug 31, 2010 7:02 PM MDT up reply actions

nope

Witlesshunt will not allow that to happen. You will not see ML Thursday, precisely for that reason. I can see it now, DA tanking and ML driving. Witlesshunt will never allow that to happen.

Leinart's out the door.

I wrote that post before learning he was being shopped. But if Leinart’s in the game it only takes one audible to get his crack. He probably won’t get a chance to repeat it though.

by hadrarius on Aug 31, 2010 8:02 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed, and I left a comment on that Leinart post you guys have saying similar things.

As for Smith, I never really said a lot about him. I posted the picture of him trying to suck a girls face off and the one where he fumbled while he was trying to throw against the Redskins, but I don’t think I ever said that he sucks.

He improved in 2009, and while I still think he sucked early in his career, he is getting it together.

Kent Somers said that the fan reaction was split, a bunch of people are questioning the decision to make DA the starter last week. Kent thinks DA will be the starter, and he thinks that this was all something Whiz has thought about for a while. He doesn’t know what will be done with Matt but they need to see if he is willing to be a backup who can come in when he is called upon.

Ugly

If they end up cutting/trading Leinart – which looks likely – I have to wonder if Whisenhut really knows what he’s doing. They’ve had Leinart around for quite a while – to only figure out now that he’s not going to work out is a bit late. Pre-season isn’t the season, but I’m feeling like the team is scrambling to figure out what they want to do at QB and it’s not a good position to be in this late in the game. I was assuming this would be a transition year – a bit painful, but necessary. Now unfortunately it looks to be shaping up to be a lost year. Maybe I’m wrong and Whisenhunt does have a plan in place, but from the cheap seats it looks like chaos.

by Cryptopunk on Aug 31, 2010 6:08 PM MDT reply actions

Agreed.

I’m not liking how this is working out AT ALL.

by GraydonS on Aug 31, 2010 6:22 PM MDT up reply actions

I think canning Leinart was innevitable...

and I think it’s a bit premature to throw a match on Whisenhunt’s prestige! We’ll still be competitive with D.A. at the helm and I don’t think it’s a reach to make the playoffs this season.

I don’t get why so many people are on Leinart’s dick??? He sucks and anyone watching him play last season and this season can tell he does just enough not to screw up. Warner would go out and blow a few games a season (a la Jets 2008) where he’d throw 6 picks and we’d lose. Then he would have a rash of stellar games and all would be forgotten. At least with D.A. he’ll take the chances and has the ability to go down field which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for Leinart.

Decision making

If you have doubts about your heir-apparent QB, you go out and find a free agent for his back-up and potential replacement. To his credit, Whisenhunt did this. To my puzzlement, he decided that Derek Anderson was the best choice for the role.

Ah, well. At least he didn’t get Brady Quinn, who didn’t look like he could stay ahead of Tim Tebow on the Broncos’ depth chart Sunday night.

And he did get a couple very nice looking rookie QBs. Hopefully they both have enough sense that one or both of them are very likely to be getting the start very, very soon.

I'm definately in the pro Leinart camp.

But— Whiz is the best coach The Cards have ever had. I trust that he wouldn’t spite the team because of a personal dislike of Leinart or any player.

If I have to choose between the 2—I choose Whiz.

What makes everyone keep saying the Leinart can’t throw deep? Against NE (after Warner was benched for sucking) he threw deep to Fitz. His rookie year—he threw deep plenty of times. His 2nd year (under Whiz) he was playing well—but didn’t know the system as well—so Warner would come in as a change of pace/hurry up QB and was the starter until he broke his collarbone.

by Cuckoo for Coco Puffs on Aug 31, 2010 6:39 PM MDT reply actions

What am i missing?

I read every artical written by Urban and Summers during training camp and preseason. DA, Skelton and Hall were not playing well. Certainly not better than Leinart. The defense was dominating.
I was just reading Peter King in SI.com—he saysHall and Skelton were so “impressive” during training camp the Cards might release Leinart.

by Cuckoo for Coco Puffs on Aug 31, 2010 7:05 PM MDT reply actions

Did you watch the games???

Every throw Leinart made was a check down. The throw that got Fitz hurt, he had Breaston for a touchdown had he’d thrown the ball to him. Instead he got his #1 receiver lit up. The touchdown last game was all Breaston and his second effort, not some saavy Leinart web gem. If any of the Qb’s I ever played with during my football career were to continually miss their proper reads and continued to check down to pad their stats, my coaches would have canned them too. Whiz is a great coach and I think the biggest reason he’s given Leinart this much leash is to prove without a doubt he is not the final solution.

Of course, if you want to just look at the box score stats Leinart looks better on paper thus far but the game of football contains many more intangables.

I didn't see Breaston

open like you say.—But the throw to Fitz was perfect. Chest high—leading him in stride. The defender went for his legs instead of his head.
I have seen DA throw check downs to Hightower and Beenie—but throw the ball so hard (from 5 yards away) that they couldn’t catch it.
I also saw DA throw behind receivers and high over the middle to Ducet, yet I haven’t seen any posts complaining about those.
As I posted earlier—I trust Whiz. He knows better than me. I’m just saying, most of the posts I’m reading aren’t realistic about the actual circumstances.

by Cuckoo for Coco Puffs on Aug 31, 2010 7:43 PM MDT up reply actions

not me

I don’t trust Witlesshunt anymore…. we are soon going to see that only reason we got to the SB was because of Kurt Warner, which should completely cement his place in the HOF, no one will be giving Witlesshunt any cred after this season.

your argument just isn't true

he played well as a rookie. He was playing well his 2nd season (under Whiz) before he broke his collar bone. He played well last year against Tennessee. He threw a bomb to Fitz against NE in the snow 2 years ago.
Leinart lost the job the year after he broke his collar bone because Warner was better. Since then, he’s only been a back up starting 1 game (against Tennessee).
I don’t get the trying to pad his stats comment. He’s trying to complete passes. Some of those throws on 3rd down should have been run for the 1st downs.
As I recall Joe Montana didn’t have a rocket arm—he had touch.

by scsa69 on Aug 31, 2010 8:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes.

A 4-12 season with Anderson doesn’t prove that Leinart would have gotten a better record. Whisenhunt’s reputation won’t live and die with the QB decision this year. He just signed a contract extention giving him time to recover from any setback this season.

If they do poorly this season due to Anderson’s play don’t be surprised when the starter next year is neither Skelton or Hall either. We don’t know what’s going on in the locker room. If his teammates really don’t believe in Leinart then dropping him could be the best choice. 2011 could see the Cards drafting a QB early or picking up yet another veteran. Then again, Anderson could play up to a higher level such as he did in 2007.

For the record, I haven’t liked the acquisition of DA since day one. I’ve seen nothing that makes me think he’s a top QB. I’ve been on record here as saying Leinart has the most potential of any QB in the nfc west. I don’t know what’s going on between the Cardinals organization, Whisenhunt and Leinart, however it looks to me like Leinart is pushing himself out if he doesn’t get what he thinks he deserves. It’s just possible that Matt Leinart is an asshole that his fellow players don’t like.

having guts to go deep is another question, but it wasn’t as if he waited 5 seconds and decided no I’m too scared to throw deep—let me go to Fitz instead.
he dropped back and threw it—over the middle on the money. that was a good play with an unfortunate result.

Yes, a good play. But he could have made a great play to Breaston.

I don’t blame Leinart for Fitz’s injury. I do question his choice of receiver on the play.

so because he improved in one preseason game, that means he is already halfway there to not being the worst QB in the league?

Breaston was open deep.

It was the first thing that popped out at me in the replay. I couldn’t see who it was though. He started at the top of the screen and was breaking away the opposite direction of Fitz on a slant. He was in the middle of the field 15 yards or so deeper than Fitz, running away from the defender.

Who would win in a fight, Whisenhunt or a Hurricane?

which is better: a checkdown or a pick 6? DA throws a pick 6 in that situation.

I have a feeling Charlie Batch winds up on this roster before the end of the year

With Leftwich, Dixon and Big Ben on the roster he seems to be the odd man out in Pittsburgh.

I once tried to quit a job using a dry erase board. Unfortunately I wrote the first part in Sharpie so I couldn't finish.
