Matt Leinart Wants Reasons To Why The Arizona Cardinals Dislike His Weak Arm

Matt Leinart never had a chance, even when chances were repeatedly handed to him. The 2004 Heisman Trophy winner was the tenth overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft, a draft considered a weak quarterback class. Vince Young and Jay Cutler headline the group, followed by career backups like Tavaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst, Kellen Clemens, Brodie Croyle, and Bruce Gradkowski.

Leinart has outperformed all except Young, Jackson, and Cutler, but not by much in cases like Gradkowski. Not the results the Arizona Cardinals were looking for, so they signed 2007 Pro Bowler Derek Anderson after Kurt Warner retired. Anderson was a sixth round draft pick in 2005 now on his third team.

As I predicted upon his signing, Anderson has won the starting job as quarterback of the Cardinals. Now Leinart is crying to the media exclaiming the Arizona coaches never gave him an explanation as to why they went with someone other than him.

Welcome to the NFL Prima donna, a world that sometimes touches a reality many of Earth experience.

Leinart was known as the pretty boy in college, a guy who some were trying to put in the category of future Hall of Famer Tom Brady as far as good looks combined with winning games. He led his Alma mater, USC, to a BSC Championship and AP Championship and some NFL scouts thought his game would translate to the pros.

Unfortunately, like many Heisman winners, his game soon was shown to not have what it takes to be an effective NFL player. Even in the modern where rules are heavily slanted to the quarterbacks favor. Some will say his party boy attitude early in his career derailed his progress, but the real reasons run deeper.

One huge reason is his lack of an NFL arm. The Cardinals run an offensive system where a strong arm with accuracy is needed to succeed. Leinart has neither. To have Anderson, coming off a terrible 2009 season, and a not much better 2008, replace him as he learns a new system on the fly speaks volumes.

Leinart wants a reason, and perhaps the truth will set him free. He was an overrated, overhyped college athlete surrounded by immensely talented teammates. The best comparison to him might be Todd Marinovich, a weak armed lefty drafted in the first round by the Los Angeles Raiders in the 1991 draft. The 6'4" Marinovich, an inch shorter than Leinart, was a USC product who partied his way out of the league after just two years.

Though it appears likely Leinart is destined to be playing his last year in Arizona this season before embarking on a journeyman career bouncing around the league, some think his skill set better fits the dink/ dunk game of the West Coast offense. It is forseeable he ends up in Seattle next year, rejoining college coach Pete Carrol, though it is improbable he could unseat incumbent Matt Hasselbeck or even move on top of Charlie Whitehurst in the depth chart.

Perhaps not all is lost for Leinart. There certainly no guarantees Anderson excels or even stays healthy a full season. It is likely he will be given yet another chance to redeem himself. What he does with it, if given the chance, is also unknown. Yet all signs point to disappointment.

Something he has been since entering the NFL.

the haters emerge from under the rocks

Even Kurt Warner (you the, the guy INSTRUMENTAL to us getting to the Super Bowl) is on record saying ML has not been given any kind of a chance.
I suppose you hate him now for saying that ?

When we go 1-5 with a DA pick every game, some for TDs against us, I certainly hope you revive this so you can apologize to us for inflicting your biased drivel on us.

I don't think this is hating...

rather telling it like it is!

You summed it up Canton

Who would win in a fight, Whisenhunt or a Hurricane?
Hold on, hold on, what if the Hurricanes name was Whisenhunt?
Daaaaaaaaaa Cards, Da Cards Da Cards Da Cards Da Cards!!!

I'm getting tired of this

Matt Leinart’s hasn’t said anything wrong. Why wouldn’t he be frustrated? He hasn’t thrown any interceptions this preseason. He’s thrown a touchdown, and has a good completion ratio. He has good yards considering how little he’s played. He also hasn’t had a meltdown and insulted the city of Phoenix or the Cardinals. He’s been patient, and deserves a chance.

He’s barely played any downs. He needs time. It isn’t fair to hate him when he hasn’t done anything. He needs a chance, and he’s not getting it. So stop hating on him. Watch. When he has a great season, all of you are going to pretend like you never hated on him.

WHAA?!

“it isn’t fair”? Leinart “hasn’t had a chance”? Have you been following the NFL at all for the last 4 years? Leinart has had his chances. Life isn’t fair.

Hey scsa

You wouldnt be the kind of guy to cheer if DA was to get carted off the field would you?

by Dem_Cardz on Aug 31, 2010 8:04 PM MDT reply actions

certainly not

it’s not his fault he’s been elevated beyond his capabilities
of course, since he’s a righty and Faneca (you know, that pass-blocking all-star ?) is guarding his blind side, i won’t be surprised if he’s carted off the field… I certainly wouldn’t cheer it..

While I've heard that McCoy has struggled

the article only went on to say he isn’t outplaying Delhomme and Wallace, I guess the author forgot there is a third-string QB on most rosters. But unless he has been really bad, I can’t see Cleveland adding a fourth QB.

by Long Beach on Sep 1, 2010 12:26 PM MDT up reply actions

Oh I wasn't being serious.

It just struck me as a peculiar possibility. I haven’t paid any attention to the situation in Cleveland.

by hadrarius on Sep 1, 2010 7:46 PM MDT up reply actions

My apologies

I missed that touch of sarcasm as well, not nearly as bad as the comment I missed by CardsFan928, but another miss nonetheless. I will say, in my defense, that a West Coast offense would seem to be a better fit for him than most offenses.

by Long Beach on Sep 1, 2010 8:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed

If Denny Green was still here Leinart would probably be better than he is now. He would have had more time with a system that fits his skill set. Maybe the team would have gotten better too [not Whiz era good though] after all the high draft picks we got over the last few years…

West Coast Offense

I hear those words and a couple names pop into mind, Joe Montana and Mike Holmgren. So immediately I got the WCO – Holmgren – Browns – Anderson – Leinart matrix on my mind. I don’t know how the QBs are doing there but could see them grabbing ML if they didn’t like who they have.

by hadrarius on Sep 1, 2010 11:23 PM MDT up reply actions

I am a little slow on the uptake tonight

didn’t connect the Cleveland dots on that either.

Anyways, back to my point about the Browns and McCoy – I can’t believe they’d axe him to get Leinart.

by Long Beach on Sep 2, 2010 1:10 AM MDT up reply actions

Anderson's career Yds/Pass = 6.4

Leinart’s = 6.5

In this preseason, Anderson has posted a 5.4, while Leinart has averaged 7.0.

If there’s any good news, it’s that Anderson’s has been trending up. Even so, he’s only exceeded Leinart’s average one out of three weeks.

What I’m understanding is that Leinart must be really good at checking down and Anderson must be really bad at throwing deep, even though everybody knows that’s all they’re good for.

Anyway, good job guessing that the worst QB in the league would be starting for us this year. We’re all very impressed.

by tw3kr on Sep 1, 2010 6:13 AM MDT reply actions

Let it go tw3kr

she’s likely gone, there are other fish in the sea…

All Whisenhunt wanted from our first-string QB was some first downs, that’s it. Leinart couldn’t even deliver that. Harp all you want about the past, DA accomplished the monumental task of moving the chains before Leinart did, and did it with only one training camp under his belt, this is Leinart’s fourth.

Anyone care to place any bets on Leinart being the starter somewhere else if he’s traded?

by Long Beach on Sep 1, 2010 9:06 AM MDT up reply actions

Not a starter

Watch him back up Sanchez in NY or Cassel in KC. THAT would be classic.

He if went to the Jets he should be the starter over Sanchez to be honest....

this is an astounding work of junk i must say

i’ve watched d.a. since entering the league – almost every game literally – and he’s horrible. if this trading business turns out true then i believe the cardinals are in for a long long long and disappointing season. anyone wanna bet if anderson does start we won’t reach 8 wins?

by az78true on Sep 1, 2010 1:49 PM MDT reply actions

the Vegas line

was 7.5 wins for the Cards, so the Cards weren’t a great bet to win 8 games anyway.

by KDean75 on Sep 1, 2010 2:47 PM MDT up reply actions

I haven't weighed in yet, but I will now

I think the Cards will be making a mistake if they trade Leinart and start DA. I know DA can throw it deep, and has a big arm, yada yada yada. Fact is that DA can barely throw the ball in the ocean from an aircraft carrier, and he will “lead” our team to no more than 5 wins.

I’ve been a Cardinals fan for 23 of my 30 years, and if Leinart is released or traded it will be the most disappointed I have ever been in the Cardinals. Ever. I will still cheer like crazy and hope for the best, but I believe from the botttom of my soul that Matt Leinart can be a strong starting QB in the NFL if given the chance and the full support of the coaches and team.

We all bleed Cardinal Red, but most of us don't recognize it!
