Arizona Cardinals Training Camp Update

So far, the Arizona Cardinals have experienced a very successful and injury-free training camp. That changed when tight end Ben Patrick injured his knee when he caught a pass over the middle during an intense night practice. Cornerback Greg Toler pushed Patrick from behind, sending him forward and displacing his kneecap. Patrick was helped to the sideline, where he was able to place some weight on the knee.

Patrick will likely miss the remainder of camp, but is expected to return for the regular season. Ken Whisenhunt stated that the team would not add any other tight ends to the roster. As it stands, Anthony Becht, Stephen Spach, Jim Dray, and Dominique Byrd are the other tight ends on the roster.

Speaking of Dray, he hasn't seen the field as he is recovering from a quadriceps tear. Dray's injury does pose a problem, considering his chances of making the team were already slim.

Dominique Byrd has been working as the fullback/h-back role in camp.

The Cardinals lined up the first team offense against the first team defense yesterday. Matt Leinart dropped the first two snaps in wet conditions. The offense did bounce back eventually, with Beanie Wells running successfully. So far, everything that's been reported from camp has pointed towards the defense getting the better of the offense.

Darren Urban talked about offense vs defense:

It was a night that otherwise highlighted the defense. Three times the “D” ran safety blitzes — once each by Adrian Wilson, Kerry Rhodes and Matt Ware — that would have ended with sacks. Darnell Dockett blew up one play where he stoned Tim Hightower. And in the live goal line at the end, the first team defense had a sack, a fumble recovery and jammed up running back Tim Hightower on three plays at the 3-yard line.

New starting offensive tackle Brandon Keith has made strides in camp. Apparently, he's blended in well with the starters and has neutralized most of the Cardinals defensive lineman, including Darnell Dockett.

Ken Whisenhunt has hinted that running back LaRod Stephens-Howling could see more snaps on offense as a receiving and trick play threat. Two players that he would often use to catch defenses off guard were Antrel Rolle and Anquan Boldin. Neither is with the team any longer.

Rookie wide receiver Andre Roberts -- after experiencing a horrible start to training camp -- has improved his play. However, the coaching staff has stated that the fourth wide receiver spot is open for the taking. Onrea Jones and rookie Stephen Williams are also in the hunt.

Cardinals' linebacker Gerald Hayes is still expected to miss camp as he heals from back surgery. Hayes should be ready to return by the start of the season.

Darren Urban reported that Matt Leinart held his best practice of camp and that back up Derek Anderson struggled.

Sounds like Stephen Williams is really coming on

Sounds like we have a solid, young group. I’ll be happy to watch that battle next Saturday! Sucks to be Komar right now (sitting out with a knee injury).

I kind of hope Ojo makes the roster. He’s been waiting long enough, you know? [I had been rooting for Gant but, well, you know] It sounds to me like Mougey’s going straight to the practice squad. They like him, but Whis keeps saying he’s way behind experience-wise because he’s only been a WR a couple of years.

No surprise the D is owning the O...!

Defense is all reaction where Offense is execution which translates to the Defense having an advantage early on in camp. Disappointing on Patrick; It’s always something with this guy man. Brandon Keith has been on my radar since last year when I first got to see him in action and I gotta tell you guys I really think we have something special with this guy. He’s a mauler and he’s got great feet, not to mention Keith is a giant of a man. I’ve been waiting for them to find a spot for Byrd who I think brings something to the table if utilized correctly. As much as this sucks for Patrick, I’m sure Dray was jumping for joy when he went down. Larod, and obvious fan favorite, will be interesting to see how he’s improved upon his impressive rookie season. Why are we still carrying Wright on the roster??? Was he that impressive on special teams really?

Finally another Byrd supporter.

I just like him for some reason.

Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.

I thought Wright and LSH meshed really good together on coverage units together last year

Since they probably will only carry one true fullback, they can afford the luxury of keeping a guy like him.

Yeah, Wright was

And with Morey leaving, there are ST vacancies.

Liked what I saw of Byrd in the preseason last year, just still not sure there’s room for him.

I’m with you, no reason to worry about the D having the advantage at this time of year — it always seems to go that way.

Greg Toler and Justin Miller played with the 1's today, and Skelton nailed a staffer in the groin.

Some notes I saw from the Red-White practice.

10,000 people there.

Defense won the goalline battle

McBride sat out and Toler looked good running with the 1’s

Max Hall looked good, Skelton looked bad

Doucet sat out with an injury that he suffered on Wednesday

The #1 Defense looked good today, 1st team offense didn’t have a TD.

Leinart ran a bootleg in for a TD but it was taken away by a Penalty.

Stephen Williams looks good, could make the Roster.

Anderson had his best practice so far.

Everything I have heard up to this point about Hall...

seems he’s a real competitor. Drew Brees is an undersized QB and look how much he’s accomplished, and I think it’s apparent how hungry this kid is.

+1 for hall!

If he can't make the 53 man roster, he should at least go on the Practice Squad.

Really doubt it

but if Hall continues to shine and Anderson and Skelton struggle something has to give. Looking forward to seeing them in game competition.

I’m sorry about Early Doucet. Believe me, we Broncos fans know the pain of TR injuries. Good luck and enjoy the HOF induction ceremony!
