Know Your Enemy: San Diego Chargers

Hey guys. My name is John Gennaro, and I am the Managing Editor of Bolts From The Blue. Each week I show up at the community of the Chargers' upcoming opponents and offer to answer questions in the comments below.

I wish that were enough right there, but due to system restrictions I know that I'm going to need a lot more words than that before I can publish this. Let's see what I can come up with for you guys:

  • Is it acceptable around these parts to refer to Derek Anderson as "Horse Balls"? One of my favorite nicknames of all time.
  • Do you guys regret picking up Beanie Wells since he always seems to be injured? I was hoping the Chargers would grab him last year, now I'm kindof glad they didn't.
  • Has anybody asked Kurt Warner if he'd like to return for the rest of the year, Brett Favre-style?

Oh yeah, please Rec this post so that it jumps into the "Recommended FanPosts" section and towards the top of the home page.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Some of us have been calling him things much worse than "Horse Balls"...

I’m glad the Cards drafted Beanie. Even though he missed the first two weeks, he looked great on Sunday.

And a few of the people on here have been asking if we could get Warner (or Leinart) back too.

I know that the Chargers are a good team, but I’m wondering why you guys always get off to a slow start. It happened last year (then Denver blew their 6-0 start), and its happening now.

Are the Special Teams a concern with you guys too? I remember watching McCluster and the rest of the Chiefs gash the Chargers on the Monday Night game, and Leon Washington returned two kicks for Touchdowns. LaRod Stephens-Howling is a good kick returner here, he has two return Touchdowns over the last two years (not counting the one that was called back against Atlanta), and I was at the Preseason game last year where he almost broke two of them for a Touchdown.

Very happy with Beanie

He held up through the season last year (which is the most important thing), but has gotten dinged up prior to the beginning of both. He’s probably a 2/3 back — he can run, he can catch, but he’s lacking in pass protection. He’s working on it, though. No reason not to believe he won’t get it figured out, but he definitely hasn’t yet.

by tw3kr on Sep 28, 2010 12:26 PM MDT up reply actions

Nobody knows why the team gets off to slow starts. The correlation is injuries. This is a team that seems to lose 6-7 starters to injury in the beginning of every season. Last year I blamed Norv running a soft camp, might as well stay consistent….

Through the first 3 weeks of the season, the Chargers have had the worst kick and punt coverage in the league. It’s been historically bad. McCluster ran back a TD and Javier Arenas almost ran back 2 more, but was stopped by the punter each time. Washington ran back 2 and almost ran back a 3rd on a punt return. Special Teams and turnovers has made a good team 1-2 against three bad teams.

Let's See

Is it acceptable to refer to Rivers as, " a whiny punk?"

Do you regret trading up to get Mathews and getting minimal production out of him so far and an ankle sprain which shows that he could be prone to injury?

Has anyone asked if Drew Brees would like to come back? (Granted, Rivers is just as good, but hes such a whiny bitch). Maybe he could bring Payton with him to rid of the awful coach that is Norv Turner.

Yes DA is bad, but you bag on the Cards, we’ll bag on you.

No. I always thought of Horse Balls as an endearing nickname. It showed how little fear Anderson had.

Do you regret trading up to get Mathews and getting minimal production out of him so far and an ankle sprain which shows that he could be prone to injury?
I don’t regret the pick yet because I think he’s the most talented, and best-fit for this system, RB in the draft. Am I a little concerned about the injury-prone possibility? Yes. Am I a little concerned that in his first game he was benched after a fumble, only to fumble again in the beginning of the second game? Yes. But I won’t say regret yet, the guy has played less than 2 games and has some good numbers and runs.

the guy wants to win, and deserves respect for the way he’s played

Rivers isn't whiny

He takes hits and plays harder than the vast majority of players in the NFL. Norv Has been good so far, like John said, just bad offseasons, maybe. Mathews will come on strong once he’s used to the NFL level.

Dear John,----

Let me see, you guys have great players, a good coach and a 1-2 record. The Cards have terrible coaches, good players and a 2-1 record. The way I see it, despite our poor coaching staff, Arizona could never bend over as far as the Chargers have. I mean really, the target you guys present when you spread your cheeks is amazing! That is why I am picking the Cardinals to slide right into your house and punk the “Dolts”, 27-20.
Oh, by the way, the Seahawks send their love, and said they really enjoyed having you last weekend.

Speaking of injuries to first rounders

do you now regret picking Larry English since he just got hurt? One dumb question to another.

On a more serious note, how has Donald Butler been doing? I’ve seen the scores of your games but haven’t really watched any of them.

by Long Beach on Sep 28, 2010 1:36 PM MDT reply actions

English

Has looked like a bust. I think most Charger fans would agree with that. I regret the chargers picking him greatly, even when healthy he hasnt shown anything.

On Butler, he was injured on like the second day during training camp is IR.

My sympathies

Seems like that position is getting to be as much of a guessing game as drafting a QB. We released our 2nd round pick from last season, Cody Brown, because he wasn’t showing any reason to believe that he’ll be successful making the transition.

I don’t get too caught up in early seasons records but you guys have lost to some teams I wouldn’t have expected you to. Cause for concern or do you think it’s just a slow start?

by Long Beach on Sep 28, 2010 2:04 PM MDT up reply actions

Seems like that position is getting to be as much of a guessing game as drafting a QB.

That’s actually a good comparison. When you look at other positions, they’re generall the same from the college to pros. However, QB is one that changes dramatically and when you’re asking DEs to play OLB is obviously another big change.

I don’t get too caught up in early seasons records but you guys have lost to some teams I wouldn’t have expected you to. Cause for concern or do you think it’s just a slow start?

Both. It’s a cause for concern any time you lose to teams you know you’re better than, and the Chargers so far have gotten beaten up, haven’t played disciplined, have had fumble issues and have been horrendous on Special Teams. Those are all fixable issues, and Norv’s teams have been known for their discipline and ability to minimize turnovers, so everyone is hoping for the best.

Luckily, the talent is there on Offense and Defense and the team knows how to come back from a slow start. Also lucky for them, crappy division! 1-2 gets you tied for 2nd place.

Bolts from the Blue - Destroying your opinions with facts.

by John Gennaro on Sep 28, 2010 3:06 PM MDT up reply actions

We've got some experience with that ourselves (i.e. - crappy division)

SF annointed themselves the new NFC West champions before the season started and have raced out of the blocks to an 0-3 start, so however ugly our 2-1 start has been we’ll take it.

Best of luck to you the rest of the way (after this Sunday, of course).

Answers and questions.

A1. Where did horse balls come from? Best nickname I’ve seen yet for DA is Errant Anderson. The guy is tough as hell but sometimes you feel like an everlast heavy bag might play just as well for all the protection our line provides. Horse balls is pillow talk compared to some of the epithets thrown his way lately. It’s kind of growing on me really.

A2. No regrets on Beanie. Injuries happen. More concerned that he keeps a hold on the ball. He’s got the meanest stiff arm in the league. Love the way he runs the ball. Think we’ll see him have a break out year.

A3. Everybody and their mother has asked Warner to come back. Personally I don’t think Warner would have survived the assault through the first two games and we’d be stuck with the back up by now anyway.

Q1. What’s the over – under on LaRod Stephens-Howling taking a kick return to the house on the Chargers?

Q2. How has your defense looked against the run? With Beanie back in the fold and now WR Steve Breaston out I expect an all out ground attack in San Diego with minimal air support. Well no, I lied. I don’t expect it but I am hoping for it.

Q3. How is San Diego’s pass rush? Please tell me it’s awful. Then it would be a wash. Our O line can’t pass protect for crap. The edges are particularly suspect.

by hadrarius on Sep 28, 2010 4:56 PM MDT reply actions

Another question

How well does your offensive line pass protect? I’ve heard there have been some problems on your line. Is that true? What kind of performance do you expect of them next sunday?

by hadrarius on Sep 28, 2010 5:00 PM MDT up reply actions

Mostly good

During the first two games we gave up 3 sacks and then pass protection looked very good.
In the Seahawks game the OL gave up 4 sacks. Clemons got 2 of those sacks with a speed rush against our LT Dombrowski .

Dombrowski has has been solid this year so far. Our regular LT McNeil has now signed his tender but is not eligble to play until October 17.

This week we won’t have Vasquez our starting RG. He has come along great in his 2nd year so there may be a drop off on the right side this week. He will miss two weeks with a sprained MCL.

by Aussiecharger on Sep 28, 2010 8:00 PM MDT up reply actions

We don’t really have a speed rusher. We have Joey Porter who has been getting close but not quickly enough often. Better hope your back up RG is good because he’ll be facing Darnell Dockett over there. Now I know where I’ll be focusing a lot when our defense is on the field. I was wondering about McNeil and if he would be playing.

by hadrarius on Sep 28, 2010 8:19 PM MDT up reply actions

First Start

Tyrone Green will start at RG and this will be his first Career start. I can see him and Hardwick having to double team Dockett because he is a beast in the middle.

All the way from Brisbane, Queensland.

by Aussiecharger on Sep 28, 2010 8:29 PM MDT up reply actions

Well...

Q1: I think it is possible he gets one but I think there will be so much emphasis on the ST this week in training coupled with the fact that they have added 2 players to the roster that are very strong on ST’s means that I think they won’t give up a return TD this week

Q2: We have been solid against the run. R1 against Chiefs we gave up 135 yds (56 on one play). R2 against Jax we gave up 71 yds and held MJD well. R3 against Seahawks 68 yds. So apart from 1 long run this year we have held the run really well.

Q3: Our pass rush is not great. We have 6 sacks so far this year. Due to the fact we are at home and facing Derek Anderson it’s quite possible we will run a few more blitzes from the secondary. Our interior line has held up well, but our LB’s need to get a bit more pressure. Phillips is our best pass rusher at the moment with 2 sacks. I expect we might get a couple of sacks this weekend.

A1. Where did horse balls come from?
It came from here.

Q1. What’s the over – under on LaRod Stephens-Howling taking a kick return to the house on the Chargers?
It’s probably even money on him taking back one. You might be able to make some money betting on him to take back two. Seriously.

Q2. How has your defense looked against the run?
Really, really, surprisingly, great. Antonio Garay has suddenly turned into an All-Pro Nose Tackle at the ripe age of 34 and it’s made a world of difference. If Brandon Siler plays in place of Stephen Cooper again, the run D is even better.

Q3. How is San Diego’s pass rush?
So far this year it’s looked good when Merriman is on the field (which has been for less than 4 quarters so far, I believe), and pretty awful when he isn’t.

I ALWAYS enjoyed the nickname “Horseballs”.

Beanie is a beast, and I doubt many Cardinals fans would regret drafting him. All RBs have minor injuries, and the upside of this guy is through the roof.

We loved Kurt, he almost won us a superbowl, and we all want him back. That said, I’m glad he isn’t pulling a Favre and outplaying his welcome and abilities. i respect Kurt’s decision to retire when he did.

I have yet to watch a Chargers game this season. How has your team looked overall?
Like a really good team that is killing itself with turnovers and penalties, which is how we seem to look at the beginning of every year. This might sound crazy, but another 11 game winning streak really wouldn’t surprise me.

Is KC for real or did they catch you off guard?
A little of both. Play that game at a neutral site, or take out the pouring rain, and the Chargers probably win. However, KC is on it’s way up. Possibly the best special teams in the league, lots of speed on both sides of the ball and good coordinators. If they had a decent QB, they’d be really scary.

Do you hate the Broncos as much as I do?
I’m sure I do. I really hate the Broncos.

Do you guys miss LT?
Sure, but it was never going to work with him here. He didn’t want to take a demotion and basically play the role he’s playing now for the Jets. I would’ve loved to have him get some carries and be the backup/mentor to Mathews, I think Ryan would’ve loved that too (he’s a huge LT fan), but he flat-out refused it as an option.

Does this Chargers team play with the same intensity and drive as some of the great Chargers teams over the past 5-6 years? Is a Super Bowl a realistic opportunity this year for your team?

If you asked me the Super Bowl question about my Cardinals, I would answer that the Super Bowl is absolutely NOT a realistic possibility this year. Possible yes, realistic no. I can always appreciate honesty with regards to one’s team.

We all bleed Cardinal Red, but most of us don't recognize it!

by robloosli on Sep 29, 2010 10:18 AM MDT up reply actions

Does this Chargers team play with the same intensity and drive as some of the great Chargers teams over the past 5-6 years?
Absolutely. The difference, so far, is focusing that intensity so that you can be disciplined at the same time. This is certainly an intense/driven team though, and that should be no surprise when Rivers is the leader on offense and Merriman is one of the leaders on defense.

Is a Super Bowl a realistic opportunity this year for your team?
Absolutely. If the team gets penalties, turnovers and kick coverage figured out (they’ve always been amongst the best in those categories under Norv, so I think they should), there really are no real weaknesses without a major injury occurring. All parts of the offense and defense look strong, with the possible exception of a pass rush, and Rivers won’t let anybody take it easy.

Sorry John. When you had a nickname for our QB that refers to one of the most ignorant mammals on the planet, and it’s testes, I naturally took that as an insult being hurled from S.D. Sounds kind of like “all guts no glory” but in more crass verbage.

They looked well-coached, but they looked like they missed Beanie and Warner.

Thoughts on signing

Ethan Albright to be the new LS?

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.

Red pubes in anything you eat for the rest of your life

is the most disgusting thing to me. I keep picturing it right now.

Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.

Beanie is just gettin the career injuries out of the way,“almost done by the way”, and if Kurt thinks he is good we think he is good. by the way, how is are you VJ and winning situations going?

draft picks

what number would you have used to pick him up anyway. oh yeah….

by robward602 on Sep 28, 2010 9:31 PM MDT reply actions

you underestimate our run game...

you forget that we went from having no depth at RB in 07 to having in my opinion and the opinions of many the best 3 RB tandems in the League, and when push comes to shove all 3 are great playmakers with the eplosiveness to make the winning play.

Beanie Wells- showed everyone last year his ability to gain yards and crush defenders with an excellent stiff arm, his problems dropping the ball and injury prone, this year coming off injury he looks great and him dropping the ball its too early to tell but so far nonexistant

Tim Hightower-one of the most underrated RBs in the League despite his ability to find the whole and his speediness to gain outmatch defenders, his problems dropping the ball, this year that has been nonexistant

LaRod Stephens-Howling- overlooked cuz of his height, was drafted in the 7th Round of 09 and is one of the only 7th rounders from that draft to be playing and be recognized, hes been a Miracle-worker in ST (even won ST player of the week last year) and when he handed the ball created big plays that hasnt stopped yet that is why his Average yards per Carry is 7.0 which is better then the elite backs this year has been doi ng…

I agree

Although I think the Cowboys 3 RBs are a little bit better.

They lost one

I think it’s Norwood, out for the season.

The guy is stubborn

I don’t see why they held onto him, it seems he’ll leave at seasons end anyway. Probably could’ve gotten a 2nd/4th for him from a desperate team llike the Vikinggs. Remember, AJ Smith is the same guy who didn’t get compensation for Drew Brees.

by Husk on Sep 29, 2010 12:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Can he leave?

If he doesn’t play this year he won’t accrue a year of service. He would still be a restricted free agent next year right?

Depends on the CBA

That’s a big sticking point for the Players’ Union. They want the “number of years before Unrestricted Free Agency” to drop from 6 to 4, I believe, which would make Jackson a FA. However, if it’s something that they give in on then yes….his rights would still be owned by the Chargers.

Also, if the Chargers wanted to be particularly mean/hilarious, if he’s an unrestricted free agent they could put the Franchise Tag on him.

So, as a fan are you ok with a GM with that approach?

It seems to me (as an outsider) that he would rather make his point then make it to the super bowl.

For years I would like to have fired the Bidwells (althought they seem to be doing a better job managing the team lately), but it isn’t going to happen, is it the same kind of deal so the fans just ignore it?

He's handled it like he handles everything...

from grocery shopping to picking out his sometimes goofy outfits, to his demeanor. Confusing in nature, never budges from his point of view, and makes some people go WTF???
AJ Smith’s Ego is half of AJ Smith. Its hard to understand, but some day it will be a Charger related meme. We’re working on it.

By the way

If someone wants to come over to BFTB to do a fanpost like this, it’d be much appreciated.
