Is Stephen Williams our #3 WR?
The newly updated roster and depth chart are up now on the official cardinals site. While there isn't anything on there that jumps out as a surprise there is one point of intrigue. Fitz is listed as WR 1, Breaston as WR 2. Doucet is listed as second in depth behind Breaston. Williams sits behind Fitz. Does this mean the rookie sensation has passed Doucet on the depth chart? Maybe it means nothing. Maybe it's just a factor of clerical necessity. Then again, maybe we do indeed have a new #3 WR.
Coach Whisenhunt has broken with what we all took as a basic tenant this season. He's starting a rookie. Sure depth at ILB is paper thin. Doesn't matter. Daryl Washington has proven he's worthy of being a starter. He's going with an undrafted rookie as the back up QB. Look out Derek Anderson. Max Hall wants your job. It isn't too much to presume he's placing his faith in the undrafted Williams too. Not after what he's shown he can do this preseason.
I can't wait to watch the game next sunday. All this talk about being a run based offense is hooey. We're going to have the most dangerous 4 receiver set in the league. Come on DA. Just get the ball in the vicinity of these guys.

Probably not
It sounds like the site doesn’t make a distinction of a third starting WR. However, if Doucet can’t get healthy and keeps giving up playing time to Williams I think it’s only a matter of time before he takes the #3 spot.
Rouget is and was healthy that was all just a precaution!
Williams is very intriguing

Rouget=Doucet I presume.
Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.

Doucet's 3
Because they need a slot guy like him. Williams is an exciting option in four wide sets though and I expect to see him alot this year anyway they can use him.

Check me if I'm wrong here but ...
Doucet is the guy that left the front office feeling comfortable enough to let Boldin go
lol

MAX HALL SHOULD BE THE #3 RECEIVER!
He has the INTANGIBLES!

DA
Will have to be awful this year for Hall to steal that job… and I mean downright terrible. Let’s hope for the best instead of presuming our now 2nd stringer rookie will win the starting job.
Stoudemire to the 10th floor will soon be Nash to the 10th floor!
Anyone else think
That if Doucet and Williams play great this season that Breaston gets traded come seasons end? It would make sense with Komar in the wings and Breaston’s contract coming to an end.

Yeah
I hope he doesn’t ask for anything ridiculous.

I wouldnt be shocked if....
Williams takes over the #2 spot by the beginning of our play off run…The guy can stretch the field and is very quick, and has proven he’s willing to go get a ball if it’s not perfect all while having a set of reliable hands…Onto Breaston…if he plays lights out and wants a reasonable deal if not I wouldnt be shocked to see him traded for a 2nd rounder….Doucet has to stay healthy if he wants a spot at the table…Competition at WR, QB, RB, and even guard seems to be as fierce as ever, and did anyone see that guy we almost forgot about named Kenny Iwebema…Our starters on the Dline seemed to be the most talented, butggosh diggity dang we are as talented two deep as most teams starters…and THATs a good thing.
If boldin only gets us
Can’t remember if its a 3rd and 4th or a 4th and 5th the best boobs will get us is a 4th

Age and injuries detracted from Q's value
There’s a feeling there that his effectiveness may be slipping. His contract was also coming to an end, and it was well-known that he wanted a re-up.
If Breaston has another 1,000+ season, he could grab more, I think. He’s also a solid special teamer.
Williams has been sensational, all things considered
He’s not there yet, however. He has shown improvement even with limited opportunities, a very important sign. He adjusted to the throw more adroitly as the preseason went on. He still lets too many passes into his pads (he has shown that he can reach out and snatch the ball, he just needs to get more into the habit of doing it). Give him time.
I think the significance of being behind Fitz on the depth chart is only that he has to learn the WR1 route tree first. As a new player to the system, he won’t be able to fill in everywhere yet, which is something we have come to expect from Breaston and, to a lesser extent, Doucet.
Not yet...
His preseason play was phenomenal, but he is still behind Doucet in my mind…Early came up huge down the stretch and in the playoffs.
For now Williams is 4th but he could unseat Doucet later down the road provided an injury or poor play.

I'll be happy if Williams only sees the field four offensive plays a game...
…as that means the running game is working and Anderson isn’t in third and long with a four receiver set.
Don't waste time or Time will waste you.
Plenty of 3, 4 even 5 receiver sets during the preseason.
Not all on obvious passing downs either. I don’t think Whisenhunt will back off the passing game as much as most people seem to.
could benice if he placed into our TE position as we only have spach there as a receiver
any thoughts on that? could be interesting if you had to defend another reciever.
true
but on the other hand hed be there for recieving only, kinda like a tony gonzalez almost. But its just a thought.
Gonzalez is very solid, all-around
at all things the TE position requires. I will agree that with as good as Williams has looked in the preseason that when we go to 4-WR packages that he’ll be utilized very effectively when given a chance. To that point, I don’t rule out him seeing some time as our third WR if he continues to play the way he has.
35 posts and not a single mention of...
3rd round pick Andre Roberts. Not that he’s done anything worth mentioning, but he was presumably drafted that high to at least compete for the #3 role. I’ve been in Australia for most of the summer so haven’t seen any of the Cardinals preseason games, but I heard he couldn’t catch, despite supposedly having great hands in college. Is Roberts that much of a bust already? Any hope for him to live up to his draft status?
I wouldn't call him a bust just yet
Jerry Rice had a lot of problems hanging on to the ball his rookie season as well. Not that I’m saying I see Roberts becoming Rice, just noting that he isn’t the first rookie to have struggled in his first preseason.
Having said that, it’s clear he’s pressing. When you watch him receive the ball it looks like he’s trying not to drop it rather than catch it. He was fair-catching some punts that looked returnable, then he injured his shoulder, causing him to miss at least the last preseason game (I’m thinking the one before it as well). I’m guessing some of his pressing came from knowing that two UDFA’s (Williams and Komar) were outplaying him. To his credit he threw some nice downfield blocks, but no doubt he needs to get better. Even AW made it a point to publicly note that he needs to hang on to the ball.
Roberts missed 2 preseason games
He had some drops. Komar and Williams both showed him up. Roberts still made the team so obviously Whisenhunt doesn’t think he’s a bust.
Theres always a bust somewhere?
comeon you’re not going to get perfect in the draft i dont care how great your scouts are there wil always be atleast one bust somewhere in your draft. i think its too early to tell if Roberts is that guy so all we can do is watch and hope for the best…
