A Bronco Fan Asks: Do the Cardinals want Kyle Orton?
Multiple sources have reported that the Denver Broncos' FO are putting Kyle Orton on the trading block (no surprise), and are demanding at least a 2nd round pick for compensation. Would the Cardinals give that up?
Over at the SBNation site of the Broncos (MileHighReport) there is no consensus on whether or not we will end up getting a 2nd round pick for Orton. Frankly, my opinion is that his current worth is a mid-3rd rounder. But some believe that there will be a small bidding war for Orton's services, and that though the initial offerings would be low round picks, that eventually one team would step up and be willing to to give up their 2nd-rounder to get him. They cite the numerous teams that need a QB, believe they can compete with a competent QB in the near future, and don't necessarily want to take the risk on a 1st round pick on Locker/Mallet/Others and have to wait as their window closes while the QB grows. Those teams would include the Vikings, Cardinals, Titans,Dolphins, and maybe a team like the Niners (being in such a weak division). They also believe that there's a chance a team who wants a young QB would also want a veteran while their QB is being groomed, and those teams include the Panthers, Bengals, and Bills, especially with Orton only being under a one year contract.
The argument for us falling short of a 2nd round pick, and settling for something like a 4th or a 5th, is that although there is a large contingent of teams that could use a proven QB now, there is also plenty of options for QBs not coming out of the draft. Vince Young, Kevin Kolb, and Donovan McNabb can all be cited as other possibilities for those teams previously mentioned instead of Orton. Not to mention that those teams might choose to take a rookie QB instead.
Both sides have valid arguments in my opinion, and before I keep boring you with Bronco-related material, I'll pose the obvious question. Do you want the Cardinals to trade a 2nd round pick for Kyle Orton?

If you're one of those Cardinal fans that's unfamiliar with Orton, here's his statline (13 games started)
QB Rating: 87.5, 3653 yards, 20 TDs, 9 INTs, and a completion percentage of 58.1% on 1952 attempts.
To be honest, Kyle Orton was never well received in Denver, although there was a good minority who always liked him. This is most due to the fact that Orton is not that flashy, sexy QB that most fans clamor for at the position. He will usually not be the reason you win the game, but he takes pride in making sure that he's never the reason you lose. He simply never got his feet wet in Denver, after being brought in as the replacement for Jay Cutler the fans/media never really gave him a chance. Add on the drafting of Tebow this year, the fans were constantly campaigning for the benching of Orton, even though he led the league in yards for a good proportion of the year. But Orton can play, he can lead a winning team, and he can make a lot of plays. No matter what team he plays for next year, I can almost guarantee he'll simply put up Top 10-Top 20 QB production. I think it's important to note he had most of his success this year with the complete lack of a running game, and many speculate that he played through some games knowing that if Tebow touched the starting field, it would be tough for him to win his job back.
Strengths: Accurate, Great Leader, Accuracy and ability to throw deep, Goes through his progressions well, He Protects the Football, Very Quiet and just goes about business, Consistently makes the right decisions
Weaknesses: Lack of mobility, Has trouble throwing under pressure, His small amount of picks seems to come at the wrong time
Thanks and good luck on the upcoming season and 2011 draft!

They might be a little interested in him
But I don’t think they’d trade a 2nd Round pick for him. Maybe, at the most, a 3rd Round pick.
Our GM, Rod Graves, likes Marc Bulger, who was the QB for the Rams for some time. They were rumored to be looking at film of Kevin Kolb, and there are some other options, so we’ll have to see. There’s a chance he might end up with us, but for a 2nd Round pick, no.
Interesting.
Has Graves came out and said he is interested in Bulger, or is that all based on educated speculation?

I'm pretty sure he pushed for Marc Bulger last season
But I can see the Cardinals wanting Kyle Orton. He just seems like he’d fit the type of style our Coach, Ken Whisenhunt, wants.

That’s a link to an article that the writer of the Cardinals website wrote about all the QB’s the Cardinals can pursue.
I also think a 3rd is the right price,
but then again, there is likely to be a couple teams trying to get him. Seattle might even be one, as a Hawk fan I’d be behind it, and that might drive it up to a 2nd.
for both Seattle and Arizona, I’d be concerned about the INTs, still. He’s generally a good decision maker, but I think McDaniels’ offense mitigated the INTs a bit and I would be worried he’d revert to throwing more for either of our teams.
But hey he’d be a turnover upgrade over Hasselbeck or Andersen, even if he reverted, so it’s a step in the right direction. Just a risky step; we’d all expect more than that if we gave up a 2nd wouldn’t we?

Personally, I think he'd be a great option
As long as it’s not for more than 2 years, and it costs no more than a 3rd round draft pick. I’ve like Orton since he came to the NFL. He isn’t ever going to be Peyton or Brady, but more often than not he has been consistent, even when not surrounded by strong players.
We all bleed Cardinal Red, but most of us don't recognize it!

Looking at his career stats
Orton has increased his rating and TD to INT ratio each year in the NFL. He completes 58% of his passes for his career, and is only 28. He probably has some life left in him, and could benefit ffrom having a WR like Fitz to throw to.

Definitely
Look at that Lloyd fellow. 18.8 yards per catch, led the league in receiving yards. Larry would LOVE KO.
I like it
Even if we cough up a second rounder, we can trade down in the draft to get a late round first or maybe a couple of high and mid seconds, or hell since we’ve had a knack for fifth rounders…trade the fifth pick, for 4 fifth rounders, but as far as Orton goes, I like your points. Our D fell apart late in games, and if our Offense had maybe picked up say 25 more 1st downs this season, I dont doubt that we would have given NO some payback in Glendale. Orton is a good QB.
How much and how many years are left on his deal? How much is guaranteed if any?
That is a pretty vital piece of info you left out.
I would rather have Bulger, or Mcnabb after Washington cuts him, and all my picks then trade for Orton unless it gets to a 4th or 5th rounder.

Orton's contract
Orton was extended through 2011 for something like 8 mil. I don’t believe he is guaranteed any of it.
8 mil for one year seems like a lot for Orton

The most imortant stat is wins
He was not top ten in that stat

He had way more wins than Cutler when that trade went down
Are you seriously concerned about that? I mean, I guess if you’re saying that he can’t win on a team with no defense and no run-game, I can see why you wouldn’t want him to come play here…
I am ok with Orton playing for us
I just don’t think anyone would rate him a top 10 qb in the NFL.

Cutler won 10 games this year
Orton won 3.
But Orton also won 8 last year, and Cutler won 7 last year.

It's not a guaranteed 8 mil though.
I don’t recall the details but I read something about it a while back with regards to whether or not the Broncos might cut him. I think a large chunk of it is built in escalators based on perfomance, number of starts or some such. The jist of the article was that the Broncos wouldn’t be out much even if they kept him as a back up.
According to roto:
8/19/2010: Signed a two-year, $11.621 million contract. The deal contains $5.499 million guaranteed, including $2.879 million of his second-year base salary. 2011: $6.89 million (+ $1.5 million roster bonus), 2012: Free Agent
So if I understand correctly
only 2.879 mil is guaranteed, with 8.39 mil the potential total for 2011. If 2.879 is the base and 1.5 is a roster bonus then the remaining 4.011 mil is in some other form of incentive based package. Correct me if I’m mistaken.
the 4 mil is likely salary and
Is split up over the season in weekly checks with the guaranteed base. Incentives would be

Orton is a strong possibility.
I don’t think the Broncos get a 2 for him, at least not the 37th pick. A high third isn’t stretching far from a second which the Cardinals have to offer. The cba issue could close down the window for signing a free agent until very late in the off season and for a very short timeframe. I think that makes a trade more appealing. It will be interesting to see how teams go about operating in the meantime and how the cba ultimately pans out. Orton has his weaknesses but has shown that he can throw for some huge yardage without the help of superstar receivers.
I said earlier that Bulger would be my choice because we would not have to give up any draft picks for him
But Orton is someone I like too, he has played well during the last two seasons with Denver. I’d rather not have to give up a draft pick that could go somewhere else, but if Orton is available yeah pick him up.

I'd prefer Orton for a 3rd and maybe 2012 conditional 5th or something
and go OLB/LT in the first 2 rounds.
