Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

On the clock: Arizona Cardinals

Everybody has their own opinion on what we should do with our 5th overall selection this upcoming draft, and I was wondering what players or position you guys think we should use it on.

Star-divide

But before you guys answer my first question, I was wondering what logic there was behind these picks :

Of the millions of Mock Drafts out there (most of them are never right) I have recently seen people having us select players/positions that don't make sense.

 1. Da'Quan Bowers, DE- The kid is a MONSTER, and is going to be a great NFL player, but how does he fit here? We have Darnell DockettCalais Campbel, and Allen Branch has played pretty good (When he gets the chance) I just don't see the need at DE/DL as Dan Williams is progressing nicely now. At most we should sign a FA or use a later draft pick on our DL. Some say we would play him at OLB, but we all know how that goes with high draft picks ( Larry EnglishRobert AyersVernon Gholston CODY BROWN).

2. Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara CB - Do we really need another CB? I know DRC hasn't had his best year, and Greg Toler hasn't looked to hot at times, but these guys are young, and when they are playing to the best of their ability they are pretty legit. I see the need for more depth at the position (just like DL) but do we really need a CB that bad?

3. Cam Newton QB - Is newton a top 5 pick? I know he is a top 5 talent, but I don't see him coming in and making a difference for at least a few years. He is a hell of a NCAA QB but I don't see promise in him as a Pro QB other then his size and athleticism. He isn't a pocket passer at all, and i think it would be totally dumb to pick him, but thats just me.

Like I said earlier in the post - What are some players you like or think we should select with our 5th overall pick in this upcoming draft?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

I think CB for sure

No matter which of the top 2 CB we get wed be set. Best case scenario He and DRC take the 1 and 2 spot and Greg Toler becomes the best third corner in the NFL.

Remember know matter where you go in life...There you are.

I don't know

I wish in this draft there was a legit OT to take, but I haven’t heard one that should go 5th overall and I don’t want to reach like we did for Levi. I have yet to fully hear anyone say that any of the QBs except for Luck are that franchise QB and if its not a for sure thing the QB will be a franchise player that’s risky because we could set ourselves back another 5 years. Any OLB we want to draft are more than likely going to be converted DE because most college defenses don’t play 3-4. Do we really need a WR like AJ Green when we have so many other problems right now? I think when is having 2 shut down CB a bad thing and Toler would be #3 and Adams to #4 that is a really solid CB rotation that could be great and could help Adrian Wilson by letting him play more in the box. Robert Quinn would be nice if he can make the transition to OLB because we need a really good OLB to rush the QB. Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara would give us a good CB to pair with DRC and if they can give the pass rush a couple extra seconds that could really help the pass rush.

Cal Golden Bears

Have a beast of an OLB, but I dont remember his name however Cal, Alabama, and one other school…all run a 3-4…so any OLB’s should come from Cal or Bama, if we’re looking for instant impact at that position through the draft, and after watching the niners pound us the last week of the season, it’s obvious any ILB from Penn State is a pretty safe bet…Bowman and Willis are going to give us headaches for a looong time.

OT!!

I really ,also, wish there was a great OT to pick up early in the draft. I am so sick of Levi Brown! Turnstile, worthless, penalty-producing bag-o-dicks! Sorry, ranting.

Other than O-line, I can’t see a more pressing need than QB. I’m not fully sold on Cam, but pretty damn close. My main issue with him is that he doesn’t fit the “Whiz mold”. Of course, neither did Warner. I do think we need a veteran back there and would still love to see McNabb in Card’s Red for a couple of years.

Anyway, let the draft talk ensue.

Go Cards!

Picking Cam Newton

Would be a waste, because he’s a project, and a project QB is the exact opposite of what we need.

I’ve seen people predicting we’ll choose QB Blaine Gabbert, WR A.J. Green, and QB Ryan Mallett. But I think it all depends on what we do with the QB situation over the Off-season.

Lets trade down a few spots

We would gain a few extra draft picks and there is no position player we need that is worth the 5th overall pick. Lets move on down to 7th or 8th and use the extra draft picks to trade for someone who is a solid and proven player we could use. If we do not trade down then i think we should go for a CB or OLB.

DaQuan Bowers is overrated.

Don’t look at the stats, look at the game tape. He has no outside pass rush move, not a real explosive burst, and stiff hips. NFL-caliber tackles can cheat with him, and great tackles will make him disappear completely. He belongs on the strong side, and to be drafted more in the 20’s than the top 5.

Arizona’s biggest problem, defensively, is the pass rush, and Robert Quinn is the best pass rusher in this class. If he proves at the combine that he has the hips to drop in coverage, he’s pretty much a lock – he’s the guy the FO is smitten with right now, according to Kent Somers.

thoughts

I want a left tackle, but there’s not a standout one in this draft. I think Sherrod might be good, but I’m not sure and as mentioned, I don’t want a repeat of Levi (reaching to fill a position).
Besides Luck, none of the QB’s are worth it, they all have negatives and so you’re drafting on potential. This is the NFL not the NBA, you can’t do that with a top 10 pick, see Vince Young, JaMarcus, etc. I’m not sure that Whis has shown the ability to coach up a QB.
I would take Peterson if available as I think DRC is way overrated. He reminds me of DeAngelo Hall, he makes picks, but he gets burned way more than he should because he’s constantly taking chances. It was DRC that was picked on this year, not Toler. I think that’s telling.
In reality, we probably need to take a pass rushing OLB. I don’t know much about Bowers, but I do HATE trying to make down, 4-3 DE’s into stand up OLB. I think the failures are much more common than the successes. With Quinn being suspended for the year, I can’t give a complete opinion on him. If he really can rush, then great. I like Von Miller a great deal. He was a standup OLB in college, so no conversion necessary. He’s greatest strength is rushing the passer and I’ve seen him do it from not just the outside, but inside as well. I don’t care if he’s a reach, it’s only a reach of a few spots, not like 10 spots.
I rambled, but I want Von Miller. He is talent and need for the Cards.

My thoughts

Rd 1
Ryan Mallet, Blaine Gabbert for a top QB or go second round and get Ponder.
we could go Amakamora or Peterson I hope we do, But since we have Green and Jefferson as ST guys Idk now,
DL Id like to see this too Watson and Branch are good but Watson can easily start elsewhere so we need to help him be replaced but we can nab Lawrence Guy in the 4th rd…
LB Id like to see this too bad Burfect is still at ASU….

We love proving people wrong Three Years as NFC West Champs!

We should not draft a QB

WE clearly do not need another project. Fitz will be gone after next season if we don’t get someone who can help us win now. Breaston is unhappy as well and i hope we can manage to pay him enough to keep him around. Doucet most likely will not be returning next season. With all of that said, i would not be upset about taking A.J. Green with the fifth pick. The guy is an unreal talent and would contribute instantly. Picking him would allow flexibility with our other WR issues. There is not an OL worth taking in the top five and this draft is not good enough to entice someone to trade all the way up to the fifth pick.

I would love Lawrence guy in the 4th! OL or corner in the second, LB depth in the third or DT.

No QB worth a top 5

Besides Luck.
That said, we need a pass rush and badly. That was the weakest part of our defense. But as others have suggested it was our offense that really kept the team down and the D on the field for very long stretches of time.
I understand we have needs but Levi Brown shows us what happens when need trumps best available.
We need to draft the best player available. If we go for Green it is very possible someone will trade us for that pick. That is what I am hoping for. More second round and late round picks.
One thing I finally trust the Cards to do is draft well. So far under D. Green and Whiz we haven’t had a truly bad draft yet. More picks to me just seems the best route to go.

by Jesse Reynolds on Jan 6, 2011 12:41 PM MST reply actions

My

best bet says they will not take any QB at number 5. I doubt that the team wants to start over again with another rookie under center. If there was a new coach I could see a new QB but Whisenhunt can’t take another season like he did and expect to keep his job. They will probably take someone to help sure up the defense. A player like Patrick Peterson at CB or Robert Quinn at DE/OLB would be fine with me. There isn’t any OT, OG or C to take that high. The only other possibility is that they let someone like Breaston go and bring in A.J. Green to line up with Larry .

by kj197728 on Jan 6, 2011 3:42 PM MST reply actions

I don't like it

Why let Breaston go, creating even more need? A lot of people seem to think this is a possibility, but if it happens I will be very disappointed…

by tw3kr on Jan 6, 2011 4:07 PM MST up reply actions

A.J. Green is a great replacement for any WR of ours except Fitz

Not saying I want to see Steve Breaston leave, but just throwing that out there.

by Skii on Jan 6, 2011 5:17 PM MST up reply actions

Since Luck is saying he's staying in school...

and there isn’t a sure thing at QB or OT, I’m thinking if its possible, trade down for other picks….
No to Green. No to a CB. DE/OLB if the slot works, as we do have needs there, but I wouldn’t want us reaching (aka Levi Brown)

by Cardzfan on Jan 6, 2011 6:23 PM MST reply actions

Trade down to the mid first

select Von Miller and use the additional pick to make up for what we have lost in the trade to get a veteran QB. I have no doubt that the Cardinals will make a move for a QB prior to the draft. With the instability ongoing with the cba a trade is the most plausible option. I don’t think they would go for a QB with the #5 pick for reasons already mentioned. 1. None are worth going that high. 2. The Cardinals can’t afford to depend on a rookie next season.

If they don’t trade down I would say Quinn or Peterson if either are available. DRC is overrated. Bringing in a top flight rookie CB might help light a fire under his ass as there is no guarantee he would even start. Pass rush is the biggest need on defense and Quinn is possibly the best option. Von Miller I like because he played the position of OLB in a 3-4 in college. I think he will be higher on the Cardinals boards than many have him rated but I’m not sure he’ll slip into the top 5.

by hadrarius on Jan 6, 2011 6:36 PM MST reply actions

I agree

Except I would take Akeem Ayers, only because I’ve seen him in action, and he’s got some serious talent. I think UCLA runs a 4-3, so assuming the Cards get a new DC and implement a 4-3 (which worked pretty well in the last 4 games), this guy would be a better fit.
I also think Jake Locker would be an awesome pick in the late second or early third round.
So, I think the search for a new DC could shape how the draft goes.

by ajotanelsona on Jan 7, 2011 9:51 AM MST up reply actions

I'm a fan of Akeem Ayers

UCLA is one of the few colleges though which runs a 3-4 and so we wouldn’t need to convert him or change scheme…

We can run the 3-4 well, but it relies on good linebackers, which we are currently lacking. Our D-line is well built for it, but we need to stock up on players to line up behind them. Then we’ll be golden…

by beanbaglovers on Jan 7, 2011 11:03 AM MST up reply actions

Akeem Ayers is

a classic case of “looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane”.

I don’t want anything to do with him.

by Chg91 on Jan 7, 2011 3:09 PM MST up reply actions

I don't think teams will want to trade with the top 10 picks...

It’s. Really week draft year. We just need to take best player available. I’m thinking it will be a pass rusher since it’s really the only strength in this draft other than WR.

by Punisher3190 on Jan 6, 2011 6:44 PM MST via mobile reply actions

We should get a third round comp pick

Given the amount Dansby played for the Dolphins.

Players who were cut and then signed with other teams do not count towards comp picks. Therefore, Rolle, Porter, Anderson etc. do not affect whether or not we get a pick…

by beanbaglovers on Jan 7, 2011 2:35 PM MST up reply actions

Yup, this is correct.

It depends on whether or not one of our free agency pick ups cancels out Dansby’s departure at this point. That whole system’s a bit iffy, and I’m not really sure what they consider to be “equal value” in terms of player acquisition/loss.

by Chg91 on Jan 7, 2011 3:11 PM MST up reply actions

if we dont take green or amukimara (BPA)

I honestly wouldnt be opposed to reaching a little bit for von miller or akeem ayers.. theyre a position of need, and we wont wind up hoping to convert someone to OLB. Great in coverage and as pass rushers..

by Flanpaw42 on Jan 7, 2011 9:56 AM MST reply actions

They'll be available mid-round

Last year was very linebacker flooded, so many teams won’t be looking for young talent there.
The Cards could pick up some extra 2nd or 3rd rounders by trading down.

by ajotanelsona on Jan 7, 2011 10:52 AM MST up reply actions

Quinn to me is D-Ware-lite

in terms of size and explosion. Some things you just can’t teach, the guy is a top 5 talent or he isn’t and Quinn IS in my opinion.

by Husk on Jan 7, 2011 3:50 PM MST up reply actions

Sorry if I repeat

I think similar has been said but a little different…

Trade down for a pick and an already playing player (maybe a solid OL). I then would pick up an OLB.

We have an early 2nd round pick, so I think that should go for a QB…maybe a very talented one with issues (saw Ryan Mallett on one Mock Draft) or one that feel through the cracks. If it looks like a QB like Locker is still there at pick 20, maybe trade up a few spots for our 2nd and 4th round picks. I think the only real shot of success next year at QB is with a veteran anyways.

by FarRock5 on Jan 17, 2011 10:59 AM MST reply actions

This draft talk involving Qb's cracks me up. Last year if Locker comes out he's considered for the #1 overall pick but now he's a long shot at Qb.

So all the draft experts were touting Locker as a franchise Qb last year but after watching him this year well….. he has lots of issues. So basically they needed to see more of his game to make an “accurate” assessment. That to me is a bunch of bullshit as mechanics and blah blah blah don’t suddenly change. So Locker had one good year and the draft experts were ready to sell him as franchise Qb worthy? The real question is which assessment is accurate? Just some thoughts.

This can be transposed to any position.

by az78true on Jan 17, 2011 1:18 PM MST reply actions

People loved Locker's potential.

Since he didn’t perform up to expectations this year, there’s doubt as to if he’ll be able to reach that potential or not. Thus, his stock dropped.
