Kolb.

He was the answer to our prayers! A QB, whos name wasn't Derrick Anderson,Matt Leinart, Max Hall, or John Skelton. A QB who had so much hype around him, yet there were 6 maybe 7 games to his name. And what did he do in those games? Post mediocre stats (at best). But for some reason people made him out to be Aaron Rodgers, and we valued him as if he was. We traded away a potential Pro-Bowl CB, a 2nd round Pick then, rewarded his 7 games with a monster contract..

I never liked the idea of Kolb coming to Arizona (you can read my posts), I thought he was practically a Matt Leinart clone. Below are the reasons why i dont think Kolb is our guy.

WINS:1 - Kolb has managed to gather a whooping win total of........ 1!!! Shocker right? You might say ohh well the defense could have played a little better then we would have won. He has lost us the game 5 out of the 6 times and here is how. Washington, Seattle, New York, (now) Baltimore - Failed to drive at the end of the game (He turned the ball over on the final drive against Seattle and New York). Against Minnesota he put us in a 21 pt hole, 3 Straight incompletions on our own 15, Fumble, INT, all on our own 20.

He cant move this offense in crunch time or in general, the only time he can move the offense is in GARBAGE time.

He doesn't toss the ball deep, he relies on the run after the catch and the checkdown just like Leinart , but we ran him out of town for that.

I have watched him make terrible line calls (audibles and protections) Yes i know our line is TERRIBLE, but he doesn't help them out AT ALL. He holds on to the ball and then starts his happy feet.

Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers all of them deliver the ball quickly with precsision thats why they are good, that's why they are payed the most in the NFL. They mask so many problems for their team and O-Line. The only thing i have seen Kevin Kolb show us is that we have more problems when he plays. I don't get why we payed him like he makes a difference on this team, and like he is one of our best players. Speaking of best players....

Larry Fitzgeralds #S: In 2010 with Derick Anderson and our crap O-Line Larry had 35 receptions and 4 TDs.

With Kevin Kolb and our better O-Line Larry has 31 receptions and 2 TDs. This was a GIANT shocker to me, i thought for sure Fitz would help Kolb, and make him look better than he actually was, but its the complete opposite! He has Larry Fitzgerald, one of the best WR's to play the game and he cant get him the ball more than DA? are you kidding me? I just dont get what all of you optimistic Kolb fans are blinded by - the numbers are screaming "WTF did you guys just do"

Our O-Line sucks I know that, but i have yet to watch him help mask their crappy-ness on a drive longer than 3 plays.

Dalton, Newton, Ponder, Gabbert all have just as many wins (this season) and if not more as Kevin Kolb. He has been in this league since 07, but he makes these rookies look like seasoned veterans.

Im just not sure what all of you optimistic Kolb fans are seeing and id like to hear you guys out, so i can feel better about all of this.

I have a few more things to say, but I dont want to make this extremely long. Thanks for reading, please let me know what you think of Kevin Kolb thus far and if any other numbers scare you. Or Please tell me why you think Kolb is our guy.

PS. Now that DRC is gone, it has exposed his value. Our Secondary is equivalent to some random Mountain West secondary Vs Boise Sate. He has never been worked out there they way Marshall and Jefferson did by Anquan. If DRC was getting worked out there, he would have at least grabbed a Pick Six. Marshall and Jefferson cant cover their own shadows out there.

Totally agree with everything

I was saying all along solidify the line and let Skelton grow into his role, and your thoughts on DRC are exactly how I feel, no way would Boldin have grabbed 3 in a row on him.

Watching Kob run around scared and not getting the ball to Fitz is MUCH more frustrating than watching Skelton avoid sacks and run over DB’s. Skelton has the arm and has learned much more of the system. It is officially Skelton Time!

by billydacardsfan on Oct 31, 2011 5:54 AM MDT up reply actions

Why would be more frustrated

Skelton has played 3 less games than Kevin KLOB and won twice as many games as him.

You're dreamin

If u think Skelton is why we won those games.

You clearly didnt watch the Dallas win last year

when Skelton drove the team for the game winning field goal, hitting Fitz on fourth and long and avoiding a sack to complete a first down pass. Kolb would have just taken the sack

by Redbird Nation #1 on Oct 31, 2011 11:58 AM MDT up reply actions

2 pick 6's.

3 total turnovers for Dallas, none for us. Great drive and play by Skelton, but really, Dallas gave away that game. All u have to do is look at skeltons numbers… Just horrible

by forget on Oct 31, 2011 12:07 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

That would be Skelton-1 kolb-0

Does that matter though? Tim tebow led his team to ONE win last week. Who cares? It’s one game.

Look at the numbers, kolb is not good, but his numbers are way better than skeltons. Skelton is just bad.

by forget on Oct 31, 2011 1:31 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

Its not 1 game, its one WIN.

Kolb is 0-4 in those situations through 7 games. Not to mention Skelton has shown a much better pocket awareness

by Cardiac Card on Oct 31, 2011 1:35 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

I'm sorry.

Did you say look at the numbers of a 5th round rookie QB from a small school that was in a battle between 3rd string and the practice squad to start the season? He wasn’t supposed to see the field last year. With a year under his belt I honestly believe he has greatly improved. The question is will we ever get to see it. Kolb would be a pretty expensive backup.

If you don't have anything good to say about the Cards this season, you'd be correct.

by hevchv on Oct 31, 2011 2:36 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

You're kinda making my point for me

Do u honestly think we should have faith in a 5th round second year player, when there was no offseason this past year? How could he have gotten that much better? U guys that are calling for Skelton are being too dramatic.

i completely disagree

Kolb still hasn’t played very many games in the NFL, and hasn’t been in our offensive system very long, give him time.
Players improve, its as simple as that. Just look at PP21s progression this year. He struggled and has improved, i expect Kolb to do the same

6th round actually.

But Brady is the exception. Comparing Skelton and Brady at this point can’t be taken seriously whatsoever. The majority of quality quarterbacks in the nfl are taken in the first round. The drop off thereafter is precipitous. If we are going to drop the Brady bomb why not throw in the Warner bomb too? He wasn’t even good enough to stay on a roster after college.

Also can someone explain to me how Anquan was beating us vertically

OVER AND OVER AGAIN?

I mean we’ve been gashed by Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, and Mike Wallace…ok those guys are pretty dangerous vertical receivers. But freakin Anquan Boldin? Im pretty sure i could run with him!

by forget on Oct 31, 2011 12:50 AM MDT reply actions

It has been a problem that's for sure

Although the Patrick Peterson we are seeing in the last 2 weeks is MUCH better then the one we saw in the first 5 games. Allowed under 30 yards to Mike Wallace and when on Q today (had a PI and a hold I believe?) but didn’t give up a big play or anything. He needed to be on Q much more and I believe you wouldn’t have seen the kind of day you did from him. AJ Jefferson is essentially a rookie as well as a converted WR to CB so that takes time as well. One thing I can’t explain is why AJ Jefferson slips on the field so much. It is really frustrating to watch to say the least.

by Airwave on Oct 31, 2011 2:42 AM MDT up reply actions

Oh forgot

Richard Marshall, and how could I?!?!?!?! He has been absolutely terrible this year. Not much else to say. The pick today was nice but that was right to him so I can’t give too much credit. He just can’t cover anyone.

by Airwave on Oct 31, 2011 2:43 AM MDT up reply actions

I really like Marshall at times

When they use him like a poor man’s Charles Woodson, he’s been pretty good. He’s gotten pressure when he has blitzed, made some good stops on running backs, and has had a pick or two sitting in shallow zones. It’s when they line him up outside in man coverage that he struggles. He’s been beaten deep a couple times the last two weeks (although I think Flacco missed the throw this week) and suffers from the pass interference epidemic that’s going around our secondary.

by tw3kr on Oct 31, 2011 3:36 PM MDT up reply actions

haha +1

Not trying to say that Marshall is of Woodson’s caliber by any means!

by tw3kr on Oct 31, 2011 5:38 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes.

I will say that I do like him when he is rushing the passer. Seems to get a lot of pressure.

by Airwave on Oct 31, 2011 4:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Anquan simply outmatched our corners.

He’s a savvy, experienced receiver with loads of talent going against a rookie and a guy that might as well be a rookie. The one handed catch against Jefferson was a hell of a display. They managed to get the speed guys past our secondary all day too. Flacco just couldn’t connect with them until the final drive.

by hadrarius on Nov 1, 2011 1:13 AM MDT up reply actions

Larry isn’t a speed demon either, and I would say he does alright for himself.

by Airwave on Oct 31, 2011 2:44 AM MDT up reply actions

Never liked Kolb and thought the trade was the worse thing the cards could do this year. Believing we could win now with the current group if we got a Vet qb was stupid. The team should of but everything in to the OL this off season and draft and started Skelton. If Skelton fails you got a high Pick for one of the best QB draft in some time. If he works out your not worrying about it. With Kolb your locked to him if he fails and you Miss out on the draft.

Yesterday, none of the people he was covering had a catch. That’s pretty good for a rookie CB who was thrown into the starting position with no Off-season.

i should have clarified

i love PP, and love the progress he has made, especially the last two game. by high reward, i meant ability to create turnovers. I fully believe that Peterson will create turnovers in the future, but as of right now he hasn’t. (and don’t say that PP has an INT because that was the equivalent of a pop fly to catch). Turnovers and pick sixes are the HIGH reward

24-6 at half tells me that Kolb and company can succeed if allowed to. If this is not a Suck for Luck episode then Whiz is a total dunce.

by AZ retiree on Oct 31, 2011 11:18 AM MDT reply actions

What did Kolb do to make you think this?

It was the defense that gifted him with the ball at the two yard line and the twenty five yard line. Peterson scored on an 82 yard punt return. Is a 25 yard drive so damn impressive? Kolb engineered two drives for field goals from the Cardinals side of the field. Look at the stats and review the video. Kolb was junk.

by hadrarius on Nov 1, 2011 1:22 AM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

Spotty play is the problem!

This team is a mess on both sides of the ball. They do some things right for spurts then fall apart.

I wish it was just a matter of changing out players or adding players, but there is something wrong with the preparation and game plan each week. It shows on the field and in the results. It’s bigger than the players.

If a driver has an accident every week, there comes a time when you must question their skills.

This team has not been able to hold it together for the whole sixty minutes. One game is understandable, stuff happens, but six games in a row?

by AZ retiree on Nov 1, 2011 2:12 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm sure Kolb getting sacked 6 times had nothing to do with his performance.

Maybe 1 or 2 of those sacks could have been avoided but overall he never had time to set up and throw. He never had a clean pocket.
Kolb was very disappointing in Baltimore but what was really on display in Baltimore was that our defense still sucks horribly and that our line still sucks horribly.
I also though the coaches game plan was pretty bad. Why didn’t we adjust our pass defense? Why did we go into so many sets with only a few blockers against one of the best front 7’s in the NFL? The coaches lost this game more so than the players.

How is Kolb not the problem ?

How many times have you seen Kolb drive the offense (strictly pass the ball only) down the field and throw a touchdown? How many times have you seen him go 3 and out? How many times have you seen him convert a 3rd down?? Because all i have seen is the mediocre backup QB in Philly. He doesn’t stretch the field at all, every pass is 5 yards. You guys show him so much love and respect, but if he was so talented why do teams not even respect our passing game? We get 8 men in the box on practically every down. You can say oh that’s cause they respect Beanie or they disrespect our line (which they should) but I haven’t seen him make a team pay for it other than the Carolina game. He relies on players to break things deep just like Maclin and Jackson did for him in Philly. He isn’t a franchise QB, just a game manager like Flacco or Sanchez, but we don’t have that kind of D.

To everyone who thinks oh Fitz has more yards and other WRs have more touches think about this: Who basically stole every WR Postseason record ? LARRY FITZGERALD – Why? KURT WARNER FED HIM THE BALL ON A REGULAR BASIS! I could care less if Fitz has more yards, he has 31 touches and 2 TD’s half way through the season people. Why is Detroit so dominate offensively (THEY HAVE NO RUN GAME UNLIKE US) MEGATON. Why did Baltimore beat us ANQUAN BOLDIN.. All you Kolb fans defend him all you want but if you don’t get your best players the ball, you aren’t going to win in the NFL. Simple as that. Kolb is an incompetent QB.

everyone would like for Fitz to get more touchdowns

but if the cards are finding the endzone anyways with Beanie, or other players, than it doesn’t really matter. The TD’s will come, its just a matter of time, heck if he had of broken one more tackle he would have had an 80 yard touchdown.
I agree with you though that Kolb hasn’t down enough on the field to warrant support, but what we gave up for him does. We have to see what we have with Kolb as the starter for the rest of the season.

He has been sacked like 23 times thus far through 7 games. Some of them are his fault for not feeling the pressure, but last game maybe one sack could have been avoided. Our line was destroyed in pass protection. I’d like to see what he can do with time.

hahaa good ol rex

always thought he was garbage, definitely exception to the rule there – bad qb but had a great group around him… he had that beastly D and Hester went absolutely outta his mind that season!!

You could say the opposite

So if they have a good record then its a good qb but if its a bad record then its a bad qb. kolb could have the same exact stats but if we had more wins he would be a good qb? if cincinatti had a worse record would you still consider dalton a good qb with the same stats?

What would be your opinion if kolb was a first year qb? Would his play be acceptable? Maybe you could put for Kolb: Unproven/First Year/Bad? I think that would be more accurate. Hes still the best chance we had this year at a good qb as far as a free agent/trade goes. maybe he wont improve but you have to try to get someone. And the 49ers have a good qb all of a sudden? Just becasue they have a good record? Sometimes you can do everything right and still lose. You just have to keep working. If it doesnt work right away you cant just keep starting over.

First Year/Unproven for me

To me he’s a rookie that has not played in 5 years. Besides a few games last year in a different system. He makes rookie mistakes. He is a rookie. Once we accept that I think we will feel better about it. Maybe this is just what I have to tell myself in order to maintain my sanity.

Nit Picking

The point stands. The NFL is quarterback driven. The teams with the best play at the position rise to the top. There will be exception going both ways but they are exceptions. If the Cardinals had won more of the games they lost the perception of Kolb would be much different but he would still be the same player. His performance speaks for itself, for good or bad.

by hadrarius on Nov 1, 2011 1:40 AM MDT up reply actions

Everything should change when Skelton takes the helm?

We shall see in the Rams game. The Cards can’t be stacked with bad QBs. That makes no sense, yet that has been the complaint over two seasons.

Leinart sucked and didn’t even deserve a second chance, D.A. sucked, Max Hall sucked, Skelton sucked but deserves a second chance only because Kolb sucks.

The QB is not responsible for the results of every play on both offense and defense. Yet some people are ready to lay blame at the foot of every Cardinals QB without regard to the one constant lurking in the background, the HC.

14 of the points contributed due to turnovers for the defense. Richard Marshall INT at the 19 and a sack at the 17 recovered at the 2

The offense gained a whopping 27 yards on the two combined touchdown drives.

Color me unimpressed. They managed two field goals on drives that started within Cardinals territory. Kolb’s play tanked this game. It’s almost inconceivable that the Cards were in the game at all looking at his stats.

I would say.

They got adjusted on. They went to a spread hurry up and the D couldn’t stop them and we couldn’t adjust to counter it. But I would say the D won then lost us the game. The O was kind of a non factor besides taking advantage of what the D gave them. The D put us in good position but the offense needed to contribute more.

Is Kolb the fly in the ointment?

We will soon see.

Kolb has been declared a “wait and see” game time decision. This is great news for the dump Kolb mob. Whiz can now make a pitching change at will. If Kolb is the weak point the HC will bring the hook.

The next QB in the bullpen is Whiz’s second “My guy!” that he used to replace Leinart’s replacement who was Whiz’s first “My guy!” (a name too horrible to mention), so he must be good. Plus Skelton has more time, than any other QB, in the Cardinals’ system. A real veteran, as far as Cardinals QBs are concerned.

Whiz is in a no lose, win/win situation. He can now prove his abilities and make the point that it was Kolb’s fault all along. This is what the Hate Kolb Club has been waiting for.

This means that finally Whiz’s hand picked boy can take over Whiz’s team and make Whiz’s dreams come true. This is like a made for Hollywood story. Whiz is Rocky Balboa - Yo Adriann!!!!!!

Cards players say they should win out!

“It starts with Sunday’s game against the Rams. There is no reason that we can’t win every game if we play the way we’re capable.” This is a true statement given the fact that they are professional football players with NFL talent.

Niners are looking for a challenge to keep pumped up for a possible playoff run. If you want to be heavy weight champ you better learn to take a punch and defend yourself at all times.
On any Sunday you can start or feed a win streak.

The perks gets better with each playoff win. Cash rewards called bonus is attached to each level of win. Wild Card, First Round, BYE, Third Round, Conference, Superbowl

Something the players should remind themselves about, clothing, mens products and sporting equipment, Magazine covers, action figures, playoff bonuses, movie roles, commercials, romances with wealthy celibrity women, (Jaylo is available for a serious relationship with a professional athelete, singing not required, playing musical instruments is a plus.)

From their lips to the Cardinals mascot’s ears. I’d love to see Kevin Kolb with a full length mink coat and matching stingy brim. Stepping out of a Pearl White and Cardinal Red Ford F750 tricked out with chrome wheels, chrome light bars, illuminated chrome retractible side steps. And much much more. Make your own luck with hard play this season, Forget about Andrew Luck and ride the SB train to History and fortune. He can get his own, Now is the Cardinals time, if they really want it.

by AZ retiree on Oct 31, 2011 7:54 PM MDT up reply actions

At the beginning of 2010

Most the fans on here were behind the DA decision. Nobody wanted to start a rookie.
DA was a horrible choice but if you read it right, he wasn’t Whisenhunts first choice (if that matters in the end). The FO tightened the purse strings for whatever reason (cheap, lockout, etc)

by Jesse Reynolds on Oct 31, 2011 9:16 PM MDT up reply actions

Was there a poll to back this statement up?

It was a case of which horrible choice to go with at the time. Saying fans were behind Anderson is going too far. I can only recall one poster on this site that seriously battled in defense of DA. The shame must have broke him because he’s not around anymore.

by hadrarius on Nov 1, 2011 1:44 AM MDT up reply actions

Do I need it?

I’ve been on this site for a while and been contributing as an author for since Andrew. I remember many people were down on Leinart, weak arm, couldn’t beat out anyone, etc. I think Joe is probably right that it was a 50/50 split. Bottom line, people believed DA could be successful. Until we saw him play in the regular season that is.
Also an article came out on AZCardinals.com stating that Whiz wanted Bulger but due to timing and money tired up in contracts he was shut down.

I know its important to have your QB be a leader but we could have at least used him until we found a replacement. If Whiz was mad at him then he should have let him take snaps behind this OL and get creamed..

Agree

Eliminating experience at the QB position was the biggest mistake in over a hundred years of Cardinals professional football.

What professional coach depletes his team of it’s most valued asset (experience) at the key position? Bring guys along and replace pieces when possible but that was (and is) a nut buster. The franchise recovery date is still in question.

If Skelton comes out and wins 2 games,

and Kolb comes back from injury he gets ample time to prove he should be the starter, anymore than one turnover nixes his chances on the season.

by Jesse Reynolds on Oct 31, 2011 9:16 PM MDT up reply actions

Exactly!

The Cards are scoring but losing. The problems are multiple. The HC admits it’s not just one thing.

The Defense did not retire with Warner, neither did the O line. Somebody put this team together, complete with it’s strengths and weaknesses. That someone is responsible for the failure or success on the field.

To date, the biggest failure is the Cards are allowing 26 points per game.

by AZ retiree on Oct 31, 2011 9:48 PM MDT up reply actions

This 2011 Cardinals team was five years in the making. That is practicing, planning and playing like every other NFL franchise. This team is the product of this HC and this FO.

Please don’t blame the players if the “Witch’s brew” causes a negative outcome. They did not make the blend.

by AZ retiree on Oct 31, 2011 10:08 PM MDT up reply actions

You are right

But the players need to make plays AND the coaches have to do a better job of putting them into position to succeed. For all the positives I think Whiz brings as a coach and leader of this franchise, he has been failing to get results these last two years.
Maybe we got our hopes up too high because of the lightening in a bottle we caught with Warner and our team was much worse than imagined. Or maybe Whiz’s flaws got covered up and are now being exposed. The truth probably lies in some shade of gray as nothing is black and white.

An observation:

It appears to me that the HC is afraid to release Kolbs natural talent.

He is coaching this kid like a dad who tells his kid how to ride a bike but refuses to take his hands off the handle bar and seat as he runs alongside. Then he complains his boy just ain’t doin’ it. Kolb needs room for his true talent to grow.

A new coach will work wonders.

Wow

All you guys do is deflect Kolb’s struggles and blame our O-Line and blame our Defense. We are paying him as if he is in the top 15 QBs in the league. Even with a horrible O-line, if he had the talent he should be playing better than this. Indies o-line is crap, manning doesnt have a problem. Jay Cutler has been sacked the most and he took his team to the NFC championship, Kurt had a bad o-line with us. But it was never a big deal because he could make things happen. I dont see that from Kolb whatsoever.

When asked about what he saw on the tape coach Whiz had to say this:

“We had some opportunities offensively , Although i will commend Beanie i think he did a great job not being 100 percent healthy, coming in there and playing physical. We did some good things in the run game. But we had some opportunities in the pass game that you have to be able to convert, you have to be able to take advantage of some of those things

Then asked about the offense against Minnesota and Baltimore
“If you look at the Minnesota game which you brought up, we had some opportunities just like they did to make some plays to get that game back in ya know, competitive for us.And we didnt make those. We had some open guys that we missed …..and you have to give Baltimore credit for making some of those plays.”

He continues to go through the interview saying we need to make more plays in the passing game, and thats one of the reasons we haven’t been winning these games.
