49ers Vs. Cardinals: Ask Niners Nation

Hey folks, it's Fooch from Niners Nation. The 49ers have only played on divisional game so far (season opener versus Seattle), so it's been a while since we've had a chance to chat with our division compatriots. It was good to see the division represent itself well this past Sunday. For those that didn't know, this past weekend was first the time all four NFC West teams won on the same weekend since the league went to the current divisional alignment.

It's been a good year for the 49ers and fans are getting excited, but divisional games can be brutally tough at times. You guys are on an impressive run lately so it should make for an interesting contest. Feel free to fire away questions about the 49ers. I'll swing by to help answer them and I'll make sure we get some NN folks over.

If you haven't been over to Niners Nation in the last few hours, JoeCB1991 set up a FanPost for the same purpose for 49ers fans to ask questions. If you want to join the discussion but haven't registered at the site, there's a 24-hour wait period after signing up. However, if you post a comment in here saying you need to be activated, I or one of our moderators will waive the activation wait.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Hello Cardinals

I want to say that you’re my 3rd favorite NFCW team, QB controversies are painful but you’ll come out better after it.

Is Smith really the answer or do you think as always he will blow it?

The crowd moves toward him with each win

I think he’s had something like 14 consecutive solid games.

The real question will be asked when he has his first truly bad game of the year. QBs can sometimes make it through the season without such a game, but it’s rare. Has he earned enough slack back that he can take a couple bad losses and still have the support he has now? That I don’t know.

Almost everyone is positive about him right now, no one calling for his head, or calling for Kaepernick, or thinking about drafting a QB. If Alex keeps playing at this level I think everyone would be happy to see just how high Harbaugh can take him and the offense when they get more comfortable in the system, when the playbook expands, when the chemistry and timing between the receivers develops.

Harbaugh

I think with Harbaugh as coach we won’t see Smith have a “horrible” game. If he is struggling then our play calling will protect him.

by mikec49 on Nov 15, 2011 10:46 AM MST up reply actions

Harbaugh is a great coach

But it is hard for me to believe Alex Smith won’t have AT LEAST 1 bad game this season… Not saying he isn’t a good QB but before this year he hasn’t done squat and even the best struggle from time to time. If the 9ers have to come back from a big deficit I don’t see him being able to carry the torch for you guys.

by Airwave on Nov 15, 2011 2:17 PM MST up reply actions

They came back from 20 this year already.

As well as 3 other 4th quarter come backs of lesser margins. I wish people would give up on that. It’s hard to come back from 14 in general, they’re 1-0 doing it this year.

Why would the 49ers ever be a big deficit in the first place?

The defense has been playing lights out and when they have been down, the offense has been able to put up the points needed to win. It’s a team effort to get the W, Smith doesn’t need to bring us back from down 20+ if the entire team does its job.

Whats a bad game?

If he does the norm and throws for 150 yds a no tds or ints its considered a solid game or management in a win but if he loses with those stats then its considered a bad game. I just think its a unique situation and his success has everything to do with the gameplan. He has definately had some bad throwing outings already this yr overthrowing guys or not being accurate but the good thing about Smith is he won’t make major mistakes in doing so. So I think anytime we lose the rest of the way it will probably be dubbed a bad game by Smith.

by mikec49 on Nov 15, 2011 5:09 PM MST up reply actions

Turnovers

Would be the only way he can have a bad game. And it would depend on where these turnovers occur.

by Airwave on Nov 15, 2011 5:11 PM MST up reply actions

His team is just good enough to carry a QB that can put up sub par numbers

The thing he does well is he hasn’t shot himself in the foot this year with turnovers like so many QBs do.

Alex Smith in the red zone for his career

35TDs – 1 Int

You read that correctly. He’s a cerebral QB who with a non-retarded coach can be championship caliber.

A couple turnovers that are his fault

Inaccurate passes

I think he hasn’t had a bad outing since week 5 last year and they’ve lost games in that span.

by whistlingmountain on Nov 15, 2011 5:48 PM MST up reply actions

Some of his overthrows are because he's not trying to put it into a spot where he has to be too fine

He’s throwing it where its an incompletion or a completion. Not a potential interception or a completion. There have been other overthrows that are just plain bad throws, (Crabs running free on the left sideline – Alex knew he blew that one and it showed, and the overthrow down the middle of the field.)

Gimme 1 round!

That's our version of a QB controversy

But I think that people are really starting to feel good about him, especially after last week’s strong performance against NY. For most of the season, he’s been avoiding mistakes and letting Gore and the defense carry us, but in the Giants game Gore was limited and we had to call mostly pass plays, and he stepped up and delivered the win. I think he’ll just keep getting better as he continues learning Harbaugh’s system.

And as for Gore, I believe we’re saying that he’s fully healed for this game, but who knows…

I'm just a simple Giants fan trying to make my way in the universe.

More than had to throw

Game plan was to play a pass first offense. Running enough to keep the Giants honest, instead of our other games where we passed enough to keep the D from stacking all 11 in the box.

With that said our big’s package works quite well and that has everyone in tight.

It isn’t really anything special considering the rest of the league. We are probably in the decent category. The run game is not all Frank Gore because Kendall Hunter has been able to step in and play quite nicely. Its just that Frank was on a hot streak so we gave him the rock. Smith is a clutch quarterback that is able to do what is asked of him. The receivers are talented, but there is something missing and they just are not wowing us. Could be the loss of Morgan. The line has been excellent but we still wait for them to regress. We replaced a very talented RG Rachel with a more workman Adam Snyder and it has paid big time. Gives Anthony Davis a veteran beside him that will work with him.

by mcwagner on Nov 15, 2011 8:00 AM MST up reply actions

It's certainly getting harder to tell

it gets a little better each week, the line has been much better than the first few games, Edwards is back, Alex continues to do the things that are asked of him.

It’s hard for me to say they’re better than between decent and manageable though as they’ve lacked the over the top ball that opens up games. They haven’t necessarily needed it, but it would be naive to look at the game film and not see the patterns there. They’re in the game, the passes have been thrown only a handful of times, some missed passes, some missed catches.

Unfortunately the 3 fast guys are:
Williams, who rarely plays
Davis, who gets the over the top help and is not great at catching over the shoulder
Ginn, who has mediocre hands and rarely plays also

The two starting receivers are Edwards and Crabtree, Edwards much more likely to be the deep guy because he is big and a little faster than Crabtree.

When he has to lead the team to victory with his arm after trailing 2 scores or more.

If your looking for a reason to legitimize what Alex is doing this year just look at his record… nothing more nothing less. Thats all it comes down to.

by mikeinsp on Nov 16, 2011 5:31 PM MST up reply actions

I'd say decent to good

We’re 26th in yards per game, but 7th in points, which is the bottom line. Our defense is great, but most everyone overlooks our number one (usually) special teams. Not only do they consistently give us good field position and tackle well on coverage, but Akers is a monster field goal kicker.

I think Harbaugh is balancing all three facets of our game so that everyone is as focused as possible. Everyone contributes to the win each week. Sometimes it may not be pretty, but whoever needs to step up for the win always seems to do it.

by McTee on Nov 15, 2011 10:07 AM MST up reply actions

Defense is elite, Special Teams is elite, Offense is nowhere special yardage wise,

but they are top 10 in points scored. We also give up a lot of yards in the air, but we don’t allow any points. Epitome of a “bend but don’t break” defense

Offense

I would classify it as efficient. It gives us always exactly what we need. I think the coaching staff has done a great job of scoring points without showing to much of the playbook or what we are capable if doing. Look at the Giants game for example everyone said Alex couldn’t win a game in which it was looked upon him to move the chains. Alex played a really solid game and the pick is all Ginns fault. We can run with 7-9 defenders in the box becuase of good o line and creative playcalling with different looks. We do all the small things like blocking on the outiside. I would say our downfall is third down conversion, but with Alex being given more responsibility this will only get better as the season progresses. I think this goes with the whole offense in general because the coaching staff has reportedly only used around 50 percent of the playbook. Players are constantly learning new things every week. Having things to use that haven’t been put on tape is a big advantage against opposing defenses.

by mikec49 on Nov 15, 2011 10:56 AM MST reply actions

3rd down conversion

Has a lot of room to improve, but the numbers are a bit decieving from the Giants game. Several times we got into fieldgoal range on 3rd and long. Not as good as continuing the drive, but I’d still consider those as successfull 3rd down plays, depends on what your priorities are on the 3rd down play.

by Dave R. on Nov 16, 2011 11:21 AM MST up reply actions

for example

I loved Alex’s 17 or so yard pass to Braylon on 3rd and 21. Got us in range for the long field goal and Braylon had a chance to break a tackle on a well thrown ball. I was worried they’d call some lame draw or screen.

Well as far as needs go

This team is pretty good at all positions and there is sufficient back ups to make it through just about any injury and stay competitive. As long as we resign all our free agents we should be set with whomever we pick up in the draft and maybe a spare LOMBARDI TROPHY to go with the other five.

It’s a lock. The Niners front office has all the trade moves ready to go.

by AZ retiree on Nov 15, 2011 1:47 PM MST up reply actions

If Alex were to be injured Kaepernick could still keep us competitive

He’s been studying under Harbaugh and the team has been running an offense that would take advantage of Kaepernicks particular abilities already.

It’s a plug and adjust situation, plug in Kaepernick and adjust the playcalling to accomadate the offense you have on the field. A lot of people, even here at niner nation, would be surprised the kind of things we could do with Kaepernick. The man is huge and has a rocket arm.

Alex is the decision making guy, the defense reader, he’s already seen it all, he can adjust the offense to take advantage of holes in the defense. He does it at a pretty high level. He’s good at it. That’s why we have the type of offense we do. That’s why we don’t have alot of turnovers. It’s why we win.

Kaepernick will have to make up for lack of experience with his athletic abilities. He’s more of a Tebow or a Newton type. This is the new prototype for NFL quarterbacks anyway. The advantage Kaepernick is going to have over Newton and Tebow is Harbaugh, and the amount of time he gets to sit behind Alex and learn. The things he needs to learn is what Alex is actually good at.

When Kaepernick hits the field 49er fans will forget all about Andrew Luck. I saw Luck last weekend, and he is a bit of a game manager. That game was out of his reach and it’s not like he took over the game. I know he’s good, but I don’t think he’s going to be a Joe Montana, or a Peyton Manning like everyone thinks.

Keapernick 2012 or 2013. I can’t wait.

"It's tough. Everyone's geared up for the run and they hit you with that."
--Linebacker D'Qwell Jackson on 49ers throwing a pass to Isaac Sopoaga late in the game to pick up a crucial first down.

I have more faith in the Cardinals than these guys on this blog. They need me!

It gets more pathetic than what you are reading now about the up coming game in SF. This “fanbase” (I use the term loosely) has given up on the season for weeks already.

Truth be told, the HC, Whisenhunt, has been so inept as a HC I can no longer support the Arizona Cardinals while he is in charge. However I am an old school sports guy who loves great sports stories and Harbaugh has not only intrigued me but captivated my imagination and I am now a fan.

I wish the Cards well, but Whiz is simply too much to put up with. I try to be honest and sincere in my posts and attempt to be respectful to Cardinals fans despite some intolerance. It is amusing and entertains me.

It’s a shame so many are eager to raise the white flag at the first sign trouble on the football field. True fans demand more and better right now, not “wait ’till next year”. The season is not over and the Cards are not eliminated, but to read this blog you would think otherwise.

Peace!

i wouldn't say we've given up

we’re just realists. We know that it is very likely that we won’t make the playoffs this year. Why would we try to fool ourselves into thinking otherwise. A perfect record for the rest of the year puts us at 10-6, which isn’t even a gaurantee for the post-season.
Just because we’ve given up hopes for the play-offs, doesn’t mean we’ve given up on the season. We’re just watching the season for a different reason, to evaluate our talent going into next year, and because we love our Cardinals.

You have obviously have not been following the 49ers for long

You want inept coaching? Nolan was in over his head the day he came. Not to be outdone, Singletary went with a stone age offense and got into fights with not one, but two quarterbacks in the same season. And he wanted it that way. The fanbase has been dry heaving for years and the playoffs were like a dream. Its easy to be a 49er fan now. I think the reasons you gave to why you are abandoning your team is the same reasons that those that stuck with SF are in extreme ecstasy. I welcome any and all fans, but I think the Cards deserve better.

Better fans!

Guys who don’t close up shop at rush hour, add a coach that respects the players. That’s what any NFL team deserves but it ain’t happening here.

Singletary was crass, but Jim Harbaugh and Aaron Rodgers are the biggest positive sports stories in the NFL. I chose Jim Harbaugh. What he has done is nothing short of spectacular and the West is were I make my home.

It's more holding on to a glimmer of hope

I think 8 wins can get us the wild card. Sitting at 3 now and we face the Browns and Seahawks at home and the Rams on the road. While the 49ers are doing great and had our number last year, we have 2 games against you and division games are always competitive. We’ve done well against the Cowboys at home and face the Bengals on the road on Xmas eve, both games are winnable, especially with A.J. Green’s injury.

We haven’t been blown out in our early season losses except for the Vikings and finally found a way to win on the road. Our defense is starting to look good under Horton.

The big reason for our playoff hopes… OUR FIRST WINNING STREAK SINCE 2009!

by cardinalbrown on Nov 16, 2011 6:01 PM MST up reply actions

I think it'll still be tough

Barring a major collapse, I don’t think you’ll be able to pass us, and to get the WC you need to pass the Cowboys, Lions and Bears. You’re three back of the Lions and Bears (oh my), and the Cowboys are looking really good so it’ll be tough to pass them as well… I think the 6 NFC Playoff teams are the Packers, Us, the Giants, the Saints, and the Bears and Cowboys in the WC spots. Both of those teams should finish with 9 or 10 wins in my opinion. You’ll need to take one against us for sure, and possibly sweep the rest, because you’ll need 9 or 10 wins to even have a shot in my opinion.

The Cards must take a page from the Niners book.

Skelton has the talent to throw darts and must do what A. Smith has been doing, limit his mistakes and play within himself.

The O line is getting better and needs to improve their timing to spring Beanie Wells in the same fashion that the Niners release Gore.

The Cardinals Defense has grown in confidence especially the DBs, the D line is making stops and big plays.

To win the Cardinals must pull it all together with chemistry on both sides of the ball and surprisingly, they showed a hint of what they could be last week in Philly.

Sunday in SF may be two teams looking very similar. The Cardinals must find their groove and keep it going to finish out the season.

Alex smith will come back down to earth at some point this season. Maybe it’ll start this week against the cards?

And good luck with kaepernick…hope that works it for ya.

Capitalization, that’s what we do here in San Francisco. We capitalize.

You seem pretty sure of yourself, telling me Alex Smith is going to suddenly stop doing what he’s been doing for 14 games now.

Why? What makes you think that? It’s not like he’s getting lucky. It’s not like he’s playing above his level or outside of his abilities. He’s not going to suddenly forget how to do what he’s learned in the last 6 years. With Alex what you see is what you get. He’s never left earth, so there is no coming down like you say.

And as far as Kaepernick goes, maybe he does well, and maybe he doesn’t. I don’t need your insincere good wishes. Passive agressiveness is not a quality trait in a man.

It would be nice to have another safety/cornerback. Also maybe another WR depending on the Josh Morgan situation and if we re-sign Braylon Edwards. Our front 7, our RBs, fullbacks, offensive line and our TEs are basically set.

I'm in the belief that,

an O-Line gelling is just as important as the talent across the line. A line that is 100% in sync can compete against the best out there even if they aren’t the most physically talented ones. I’d rather give them time to build upon their rapport than constantly changing cogs and expecting it to work just because a guy is supposed to be more talented. Talent wise, Chilo > Snyder. Yet our line is a lot better with Snyder in there. Dunno, maybe it’s just me but I think our line has gotten better every game and I think this could be a solid line for years to come if the cogs are consistent.

Cornerback. Let Rogers teach him to be a professional. Next would be the most talented DL that can be a project. We need depth and a future there and in my opinion we can’t get enough. As far as our offense, I think we just need more time. The receivers are still young and very talented, the QB position looks set with Smith being the veteran presence while Kaepernick gets groomed with fallback option Tolzien too. Hunter looks to be our future with Dixon our bruising back possibly (if he doesn’t come back they will then draft another) Miller is all we have asked for in a fullback and the line needs more time. Iupati will be a probowler for years and Davis just needs more time. If there is an elite OL available they always get picked

Miller is ridiculous

His measurables are almost identical to 1st round pick Jerry Hughes. The differences being he’s much stronger upper body and he’s an inch shorter white guy and I guess that was enough for nobody to want him as a DE. We took an athletic freak that played TE in HS and turned him into our FB. I would bet money within 3 years he’s top 3 in the league. Maybe the best. Needs

Personally I would say DB on defense. I’m not sold on Brown and although we have some progressing talent at the position like Culliver and Brock I think it could stand to be solidified. Offensively I think we let Braylon go and even though we will get Morgan back from injury this could be an area of need for us. Some Niner faithful also think its time to draft and groom and hard physical running back to replace Gore in yrs to come, I’m not one of those I think Hunter and Dixon will be phenominal for us and are the future. Also I think Harbaugh will always try to upgrade the O line no matter how good they are.

I think so as well,

I think he’s really bought into the 49er culture. This is a tight team and Edwards doesn’t strike me as a money guy. He got his fresh start in SF and it doesn’t seem like he’s going to want to start over again. Since he’s missed several games, it’s not like he can use the “I’m an elite WR, so pay me elite money,” since his stats aren’t backing it up either. Not a knock on Edwards but the last thing we need is for him to completely blow up stat wise and command a ton of money. Blessing in disguise maybe.

Nononono you got me wrong,

I disagree

He only struggled in the first 3ish games. The only drawback to his play has been penalties. And these calls he gets are nothing I don’t see the top cover corners do all the time….. He covered Mike Wallace all game (except on the play for the 95 yard TD or w/e it was) for 25 yards. Held Brandon Lloyd in check (didn’t cover him as many plays as Mike Wallace) and no Philly receiver had over 50 yards (he covered more than one person). I think it is extremely difficult for a corner to come in and shut down day 1. Add in the lockout and I really think he had no chance.

Haralson has done a good job as well.

If Aldon was outright outplaying Haralson it would be easy to insert him into the lineup, but Haralson isn’t going to just lay down and let a rookie take his spot. He’s been a great mentor for Aldon and I’m assuming the coaching staff only wants Aldon to do what he’s great at in games, which is rushing the passer. No need to expose him too early. Haralson can cover, Aldon can pass rush. Combine them, you have a great OLB, but both have their weaknesses so gotta go with the rotation.

Lockdown corners don’t let a guy get open enough for a QB to even want to throw at them. Playmaker corners let a guy get open just a little bit, then have the athleticism to every other game or so make a QB pay for taking that chance.

I'd say either WR or CB

We definitely have our #1 CB in Rogers, as long as we can lock him up, but if we can lock down the other side of the field our defense will be unstoppable. As for WR, I don’t think we’re very deep at that position and we need a deep threat.

I'm just a simple Giants fan trying to make my way in the universe.

by Tim Lincecum's Bong on Nov 15, 2011 9:38 PM MST up reply actions

unstoppable... probably not

The biggest problem is that the top passing offenses spread you out and make the defense only as strong as the weakest player.

The fastest way to becoming unstoppable is, and will always be, getting a better pass rush. So, re-sign Brooks, and hope that Brooks and Aldon can improve, that McDonald and Justin can stay healthy.

The team could always use more corners though. They have Holcolm on IR, Brock just came back from injury. I know people complain about the secondary, but outside of a couple teams that actually have really solid sets of corners, the 49ers have a pretty decent secondary right now. It’s just the state of the game that well oiled passing machines can put up yards and points. Have to take the good with the bad, get some sacks, get some turnovers to balance it out. Control the clock on the other side to keep them frustrated.

It's more the formations

As some people have said on NN, Harbaugh is running Singletary’s game plan better than Singletary could. We’ve been running the ball a heck of a lot until the NY game, but it’s not the same ol’ formation time and time again.

The problem was always predictability and lack of adjustments. Harbaugh has shown he and his staff can both adjust to what they’re seeing from the other team, as well as mixing formations to create mismatches, confuse defenses and setup plays later in the game. Even if you know it’s a run, it’s hard to figure out where when there’s 3 people in the backfield and 2 TE’s at the line.

Yeh those are fun and get lots of press

They really make the D guess and take chances though. Against the Lions, we overloaded a side and Gore busted big runs. Against the Giants, Hunter ran away from the loaded side and broke off a TD.

by mrg80 on Nov 15, 2011 3:05 PM MST up reply actions

What was really impressive about that

Was we had 3 TE’s lined up on the other side so it fooled everybody sooooo much. We also have a short yardage play we bust out every couple games. It’s perfectly, (technically), legal, but half the time even the refs don’t know what they’re looking at. We line up in a heavy set and we shift our TE’s and people jump every time. Sometimes the refs don’t know what they are watching and say its a simulated snap… But last week they got the call right when the D jumped.

Gimme 1 round!

Comments and questions

Congratulations on the big year 49ers fans. You guys aren’t as annoying when you’re winning as when you have the fake fans on every message board posting about how great the niners are when they haven’t done jack in the last decade. My two best friends growing up were die hard niners fans so I’ve been fighting this battle for a long time. Gotta love a good rivalry.

I have always wanted to see a competitive NFC west that has multiple powerhouse teams and takes wildcard spots, not sends a team to the playoffs at 7-9. You guys are obviously on your way to bettering the NFC west representation (barring any potential setbacks or Cardinals 9 game win streak to end the season) this year and I will cheer for you guys to do well in the playoffs.

I feel that the Cardinals will be there in the next year or two. With the way our defense has played over the past few games it is clear that we have some young, very talented players on the roster. As our QB, whether it be Kolb or Skelton, grows in the system and gets used the nuances of being an NFL quarterback, our RB’s (esp. Williams) get healthy, and we get another WR alongside Fitz the offense will be clicking and we should be able to have some great battles with the niners. I’m hoping for a great rivalry for many years to come, and one that isn’t a rivalry to see which team can end up at .500. That being said, I still hate your guts and hope you all fail miserably next year when we will be competing again.

Now time for the questions:
Alex Smith has shown this year that he can manage a game and be successful in leading a winning team. Do you ever see him being a difference maker that is so often expected out of a #1 pick?

How much of the change in record do you attribute to Harbaugh? Is he that good or was Singletary that bad? I gotta admit from the few interactions I watched between him and the press and reports on training camp he seemed like an uninventive bully that would refuse to change his best interests for the best interests of the team. But I would be interested to find out your opinions on him vs. Harbaugh.

From a fantasy perspective, should I keep Hunter on my bench? is Gore healthy enough to play the rest of the year or are there concerns? Any WR on the team worth starting?

And can I get activation for niners nation as well. Thanks!

by Superfizzogotflow on Nov 15, 2011 1:52 PM MST reply actions

My 2 cents

I feel the same way about the NFC west. Living in AZ for the past few years, if the Niners weren’t going to make the playoffs, I’d rather it be the Cards than the Hawks or Rams. I’d rather win a good division that be the slightly less bad team.

I think there’s a good chance Alex gets a 2-3 year extension, which would be almost a lock if we get a playoff win. Alex has repeatedly shown that he’s not greedy come contract time, since he hasn’t lived up to the huge early payday. I also don’t see him rolling the dice with a new team and new system, given he’s finally having success and should get some consistency from the coaching staff.

On the coaches, I think it’s a mixed bag. Singletary and his staff really was that bad. They made a ton of mistakes and didn’t really know how to game plan. On the other hand, I think Harbaugh really is that good, but not just because of himself. Harbaugh is a great coach because of the attitude and direction he has installed in the team, but also because he can maximize the skill sets of excellent coaches across the board. Singletary could not recruit top coaches or even work well with the ones he had.

If Gore is out, then Hunter is a good start. If Gore is healthy, I wouldn’t risk it unless you’re in bad shape for a bye filler. Hunter gets a fair amount of yards per week and has busted a few TDs. I don’t think any of the Niners receivers are great fantasy wise until we execute better in the red zone. I expect it to improve as the season progresses, with most looks at Crabtree or Braylon. I would go with Crabs if I had to play one of them.

by mrg80 on Nov 15, 2011 2:07 PM MST up reply actions

I do think the entire NFC West will be a lot better next year

Seahawks are a decent overall team, they just need to improve at QB. I thought the Rams would have been better this year, but with a full year in the McDaniels offense and with Brandon Lloyd I think they will be better, and with us having a full offseason for Kolb to get used to the offense and the Defense with Horton’s scheme I see improvement.

The answer to all AleX Smith questions,

He’s our guy, he’s the guy, period. There is no QB controversy in 49er land. The 49ers are 8-1 and he’s a huge part of it. Ice cold in leading the come back vs. Philly. Threw the cold blooded game winning TD against Detroit. Beat the Giants in the air with Frank Gore gaining ZERO rushing yards. Every single fan base thus far has under estimated AleX and according to our record, I’d say he’s done a very good job proving them wrong.

95.8 Passer rating
101.3 Passer rating when playing from behind
158.3 Passer rating when playing from behind by 9-16 points
113.4 Passer rating when the game is tied
117.6 Passer rating in the 4th quarter

I don’t have the exact figures with me, but for the past 14 games, he’s turned the ball over less than 5 times and has a TD:INT ratio of 5:1

I am not making AleX Smith out to be the next Joe Montana, but he is a huge reason why the 49ers are having so much success. Again he is supported by an elite defense, but it’s a team effort to win games and when teams have dared him to pass the ball, he’s made them pay. Take out AleX, and our record is much different, just like if you take out our defense. Team effort!

Philly game this year. He was perfect in the 3rd quarter, when the 49ers were down by a lot.

As in 100% completion rate, 179 yards and 2 TD’s. The 49ers haven’t been down by much, but when they are, AleX can get them back in the game. 4 4th Quarter game winning drives this year. Ties him with Eli for the most I believe.

Quick draw!

I beleive that if the QB can run the Cardinals Offense smoothly with quick counts and handoffs, Wells will be a force. To date, this Offense allows the defense to set up and Beanie gets stuffed.

If the Cards pick up the pace, it will be an interesting contest, with Wells securing the football that is.

Hunter has quite possibly outplayed Gore when he's gotten carries. He certainly did against the Giants

Alex hasn’t had to average over 250 yards because Gore and Hunter march down the field and eat up 8 minutes of clock a drive.

a lot of that has to due with how he's been used though

As a change of pace back. It might be different if he played every down.

by Andrew9erfan on Nov 16, 2011 7:07 PM MST up reply actions

Gore has not been officially ruled out. Although he did not practice today.

But even without Gore, I still believe we can score more than 20 points. Gore was not healthy going into the game against the Giants, and finished it in the 2nd quarter with a knee injury. He had 6 carries for 0 yards. With all that, we still ended up with 27 points against a defense which I believe to be superior to the Cardinals.

I believe Hunter would fill in fine for Gore. When he has played, he’s looked pretty good, including the Giants game. He’s averaging 4.8 yards per carry(just more than Gore) and has 2 TD’s.

As for Alex, yes he is averaging under 250 yards per game, 190 to be exact. But the reason for that is because we’ve played with the lead going into 2nd halves. Which means we’re running the ball a lot more than passing it. So yards per game is not a great stat to go by.

Where do the Cardinals find points in SF?

Everyone is saying the Cards must pass to the Endzone to win. The Niners give up only 9 points per game in the air (1TD).

Maybe the stratagy is to rely on Feely, “Old Reliable”. I guess if he hits four FGs that would get them to 12, plus one passing TD, thats 19. If the Cardinals D is able to shave at least 8 points off the Niner’s normal output, it could work.

Makes more sense to me to pound the ground in the Red Zone, and pass to get there. Wait a minute, that might work, forget I said anything.

by AZ retiree on Nov 16, 2011 2:38 PM MST reply actions

If you wanna score, don't do it in the red zone.

That’s where the 49ers CLAMP DOWN. I’d say the best location on the field to try and score on the 49ers is in the 30-40 yard range. Let Fitz make a play in the open field or hope someone can get behind one of the corners. But the shorter the field, the harder it will be to score.

Marshawn Lynch, Cedric Benson, LeSean McCoy, Legarrette Blount, Jahvid Best, Brandon Jacobs

If Fitz doesn’t have a big game, the Niners will almost certainly win. I’d say you’d need at least one big TD catch from him, and probably a few field goals, and then your defense needs to clamp down.

I really can’t wait to see our defense go against the 49ers because it will let us know where we really stand. I loved what I saw the last 2 weeks but I am not getting ahead of myself TOO much yet because neither team has a winning record. We have some emerging stars and this road game against the 9ers is exactly what I am looking forward to seeing. They do look completely different from the start of the year I will say that. Hopefully they can create a turnover or two.

Jay Feely should be on everyone’s what to watch for radar because he has already missed as many FGs as he did all of last year…. In 7 attempts…. If this is a defensive stalemate with FGs Jay could very well cost the game.

Biggest game of the season!

Must Win!

Arizona has an opportunity to prove all aspects of their game against the best.

How many ways can Skelton score or is he an effective QB at all?

Do the Cards really have a ground game good enough to open passing lanes?

How does the O line define itself, weak or stout?

Are the DBs ready for prime time or just a flash in the pan? Will the LBs pass this test?

Can the Cardinals D pressure, hurry and sack Alex Smith and prove they are for real?

Can Feely regain his swagger and become a reliable producer or continue to be a liability.

What is Whisenhunt’s game plan? Is it a winner?

This Sunday will tell everything anybody ever wanted to know about the 2011 Arizona Cardinals. With a win they brighten their playoff hopes and a loss makes them very dim.

Really isn't one
