Rashad Johnson and other thoughts.

Since the hot button issue around here will be all about the quarter back position, one topic I have not heard a lot about is the free safety position that Rashad Johnson is manning due to the absence of Kerry Rhodes.  While RJ has not done anything sexy yet, I have noticed with Rhodes being out our run defense hasn't been as stout, but it seems to me that Johnson is keeping the lid on this defense.  Of course the big play may be getting prevented now that Calais Campbell and Sam Acho are starting to get used to one another and seem to be making QB's uncomfortable.  Another thing on our defense is all the should be INT's...Daryl Washington had two, one of which was still an enormous stop, but although the missed INT's drive me as crazy as the next person, it does tell me that our coaching staff is getting players in a position to make plays.  It is a very complex system and once they know exactly how things are supposed to be I get the feeling our defense can be described in two words, Fierce and Stingy. What do you think?

Also did anyone notice that sighting of the screen pass that John Skelton opened the game up with?  How perfect was that, and why have we not been able to do it this season?  I'd like to believe it's been inexperience at QB, but our backup certainly proved that we have the talent to do a lot of things on offense and do them well.  I think at this point it would be wise if the coaching staff let Kevin Kolb rest this week and be ready for the Niners, if he can beat the Niners then I'll say give him a second look, but if he loses then that essentially ends our race to the playoffs and it's time to dump Kolb invest more in the Oline and let Skelton become the quarterback for this decade.

the lack of offseason workouts

has hurt us compared to many other teams.
Our defense is said to be “complicated”. That combined with all the new pieces added leads to a lot of mistakes.
RJ probably plays more conservative than Rhodes. That will mean less big plays, but more small gains.
On offense—we added so many pieces that they don’t always seem to be on the page.
This season may be out of reach for the playoffs, but the fact that we’re playing hard and staying close with a chance to win almost every game is making me think that next year will be better.
I’m a firm believer in the NO MORAL VICTORIES doctrine, but learning how to win close games can’t be underestimated. I would love it, if we could finish 9-7 or 8-8 this year and really be a much better team next year.

No more night. I have seen the light. Let it shine on bright.

Acho and Schofield have sparked the defense.

It’s hard to say how much impact Johnson has had on the back end. If the coaches film was available for every play that would be another story. It’s clear that the play of the front seven has been better since Porter has been out. With regard to the run defense I don’t think it’s so much about Rhodes versus Johnson as having been up against very good running backs.

I don't think RJ is doing much for us

I’d be hard-pressed to try and figure out which one is the poorer tackler because they are easily the worst at it. As for keeping a lid on the defense, I believe it is more to do with the improved play we are seeing from the front 7. They are stopping the run better and seem to be pressuring the QB more consistently. Wide receivers are still blowing through our coverage with ease but either the corners have been able to stay with the play and prevent catastrophe or the throw just misses (thank you, pass-rush).

He is making quiet plays from what I have seen

But in nickel packages, Johnson goes out and Marshall plays safety, with Adams playing slot corner. Reason according to Somers? Marshall better in coverage than Johnson.

I enjoyed

Seeing him get stomped by Jackson…. But heck, that happens to plenty of players.

RJ made a great tackle on Rice in the 1st quarter against the Ravens.

Would have been a big touchdown run if he hadn’t. I was impressed. Then he got smashed by Jackson this week. I didn’t enjoy it.

Yeah the middle is really soft in our pass D

I think that is more because Lenon is so dang slow and useless, I wonder why he is even still starting

I never even notice the guy

WHERE THE EFF IS BRADLEY??!!! is he really struggling that much? very disappointing, was really excited with the pickup when it was initially announced…

He can't get on the field

Watch kickoffs and you’ll see 52 is the first one down the field. He’s having trouble getting ahead of Lenon on the depth chart. This is his first season switching from a 4-3 OLB to a 3-4 MLB, coming off an injury, and playing in a complex system. Lenon is a defensive captain and is the signal caller of the defense. I’d expect to see Stew alot more in the near future and we able to sub guys in without compromising the scheme.

Also his first season back from injury

Lenon is playing alright, just good enough to stave off Bradley.

It is not his north and south speed I am concerned with

It is his cuts from sideline to sideline. Watch how slow he is…..

You do realize that dumping Kolb

Results in $21 million dollars of guaranteed money lost, and that if we are out of the playoffs it would be more rational to give Kolb a chance to show something because Skelton is paid far less and can be a restricted Free Agent when his contract is up.
