I think Skelton proved he is every bit (or more) the QB Kolb is this week. Despite a rusty (to say the least) first half (possibly due to coming off the bench cold), Skelton torched one of the best defenses in the NFL with 3 touchdowns passes.
Does Skelton read defenses as well as Kolb? Is he as accurate? Are his mechanics as good? I don't know. Maybe not. But he does have a better pocket presence. He is more confident. He is harder to bring down. And he just. Wins. Games. Very Tebow-like.
Now, What i've heard for weeks now, from the Kolb--philes, is that Skelton's wins are all luck. PP won his first game. The Eagles suck. Wells won the other game. I hate to tell you all, but all of AZ's wins have come on close plays, and all could be attributed to "luck". This would be foolish, however- both teams will get their share of lucky plays. And it goes without saying that both of Kolb's wins arguably came because of "lucky" plays as well- PP in the Carolina win and an unexplainable coaching gaffe in the Dallas game.
Neither QB has been good this year. Both have shown improvement. What I see as the major difference is that our team plays better with Skelton. We have a more dynamic offense with Skelton. On 3rd and long, teams will bring a ton of pressure vs. Kolb and force him to either make a mistake or take a sack. Skelton makes the latter much more difficult, and he has the ability to extend plays- much more so than Kolb. There were at least 3 instances in yesterday's game when SF had a sure sack on their hands, only to have Skelton get free. Had Kolb been playing, how many of those hits would have been sacks? Maybe fumbles? Most importantly, Skelton has been clutch in the 4th quarter. It seems every time he gets to the red zone, the Cardinals get the TD. Kolb seems to panic. Despite having (whatever excuse you can come up with in his losses, like a bad defense), Kolb has had the ball with a chance to tie or win in 4 of his 6 losses. And the fact they were losses should tell you he failed. Skelton has been in the same situation in all 4 of his wins- suggesting given the similar circumstances, Skelton performed in the clutch when Kolb did not. Even in the Dallas game, Kolb had a chance to win the game at the end of the 4th quarter, but inevitably the drive stalled, giving Romo the chance to win the game at the end of regulation.
Regarding turnovers, both QB's have had their share, and have had truly terrible performances on a game-by-game basis. Yesterday was no exception, with 2 picks and a fumble. But those are just stats- on both picks the receiver had at least a hand on the ball. The fumble was questionable and occurred on a first-down scramble. Most importantly, none of those TOs lead to more than field goals. Had Kolb played the whole game, he would also have had his share of TO's, as his history dictates. And for those of you that would say that the defense "bailed him out," I would say the defense was neutral. Yes, they played an excellent game, and prevented scores from the anemic SF offense. But they also produced no TO's of their own.
Here are the stats I think are important. Kolb has played 8 games this year (let's omit yesterday's start, where he was 1 for 1 with 2 yards passing, on a 3 and out posession that lead to terrible field position for the entire first half). He has thrown for 8 TDs all season- that's 1 per game. Skelton has 9 TDs in only 5 games. That's almost 7 points more per game. The pink elephant in the room, of course, is the fact that Kolb is 2-6 and Skelton is 4-1. How can anyone ignore that? Yes, the Defense is playing better now... but it's too seemingly convenient (and fallacious) to give the defense all the credit. We can all talk about the blame game in Kolb's losses, and how Skelton is just lucky, but the Cardinals have only set up the victory formation with Skelton at the helm.
