Should The Arizona Cardinals Target Stevie Johnson In Offseason?

Extremely long shot here but after I've been shot down about DeSean Jackson and a few other young talented WR's I decided I would throw this up. Steve Johnson's contract talks have fallen apart in Buffalo, and not because of money issues apparently. He is asking for a five-year, $9 million a season, something that is great for one of the leagues top tier WR's in the league.

Star-divide

I know it's a long shot because 1) We NEED TO RESIGN CC and 2) There's a few people saying we have about a 7 million dollar cap room. (According to Darren Urban we have about 6-7 million more).

A few drawbacks I see is that he is immature, (a little time around Fitz and a couple of beltings he'll be fine), and the other one is he drops passes (Steelers, Jets) Other than that he seems like he could be a solid pick up for us and it'll give us that dangerous number 2 man we all want, and a dangerous 3 and 4.

So wada you think... Should we get Stevie Johnson??

He's actually pretty sure handed

The problem is that his drops have come at inopportune times. Everything is relevant to price though. While i would love to have him on the Cards, i feel like we can get just as much talent from a WR in the draft, depending on where we take them

You beat me too it

I didn’t know the numbers that he was commanding. I feel like 9M per season is too much money for him. If we were going to pay the WR2 that much we’d have kept Boldin. I’m not opposed to paying 5M a year, something like Breaston’s contract with the Chiefs, but 9M is just too rich for me at this point, go to the draft if it’s worth that much.

+1

Not worth it to sign someone like Stevie for 9 mil…. Find a cheaper option or just draft a receiver IMO. We can’t afford to pay a WR 9 mil.

If we were to go the draft route

and we continue to win out given our draft position at that time…and we were to pick up a WR in the first round. I’d go with Alshon Jeffery from the Gamecocks. Big man, Hes got hops, and the highlights I’ve seen got hands like Fitz. Personally I’d want Vontaze Burfict next to D-Wash and between Scho-Cho, and build our OL and WR through FA. We say it every year but THIS D is going to be a terror next season.

Good choices

I am not sold on Vontaze like some are but I don’t think Jeffery will be at our pick since we continue to win games.

Especially given the recent trend of WR in the draft

Julio Jones was supposed to be a mid first round pick, and jumped all the way to 6th. Teams are desperate for impact WR, which may help us by pushing back some very good players which should have been drafted higher

Follow me on Twitter at @AlexDavidson68

by GreaZzy on Dec 16, 2011 3:32 PM MST up reply actions

Julio's draft stock was also helped by a freakish combine

At 6’3 & 220lb he ran a 4.34 40, good for 2nd fasted among WRs… with a fractured foot. If the Falcons didn’t trade up to get him, he would have likely slipped out of the top 10

by cardinalbrown on Dec 16, 2011 5:12 PM MST up reply actions

Im not sure the browns would have passed on him

they desperately need WR help. And this year WR is the biggest need on at least 3 top 10 teams, Rams, Jags, Browns, along with other teams needing WR help, but not necessarily as their number 1 need. I see possibly 3 WRs going in the top 10 this year

I think Jeffrey goes in the 8-12 range. Depending on interviews, Floyd could go anywhere from mid to late 1st. I forsee some great discussions with you over draft prospects over the next few months

Oh no,

Vontaze is the real deal, and will change the identity of our defense, he will bring the nastiness we are lacking at LB

I don't like vontaze

He might be the most overrated player in the country. He’s been worthless this season

by forget on Dec 16, 2011 7:44 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

I think

with the right coaching, Vontaze could be a beast. With a good state of mind, his athleticism could be a force on any defense, the only problem is getting him to that state. He’s fallen quite a bit on most draft boards because of his play this season, he’s been struggling to find a balance between agression and passivity, i hope he can find that balance. (Unless he plays for the Cowboys, Eagles, or 49ers).
As one of my friends said “He ain’t perfect, but he’s Burfict, you gotta see what you can get”

I personally like Stuckey.

I believe he could be a good WR in this league given the chance. It may just be bias since he came from Clemson. Given the chance we should negotiate a deal with Johnson and if we get a shot @ Blackmon during the Draft, let them battle it out in Preseason and cut Johnson if Blackmon is better.

by Alex Mann on Dec 14, 2011 7:25 PM MST up reply actions

Rather build the line

Or the defense before grabbing a WR or RB

by Jesse Reynolds on Dec 14, 2011 7:26 PM MST up reply actions

Well I don't think the D needs to be built. Solid LB corps and many of them can be potential greats.

CB’s will be good too considering we’ll have Toler back and maybe DRC if the Eagles let him go. But I do agree, we need to solidify our Tackles before we get a WR. I think we’re set at RB with Wells and maybe possibly Williams. But if FA is void of any good Tackles then we should get a WR and draft Tackles.

by Alex Mann on Dec 14, 2011 7:29 PM MST up reply actions

The Eagles are letting go DRC?

Even if they don’t, we’re still set. Like you said, Greg Toler will be back, and AJ Jefferson and Patrick Peterson have improved a ton this season.

They didn't resign him when we traded him.

That’s why he was allowed to practice when other traded players and FA’s weren’t allowed to.

by Alex Mann on Dec 15, 2011 6:48 AM MST up reply actions

They didn't resign DRC because he has a real cheap contract good through 2012, with a player option for 2013

We didn’t trade DRC when he was playing at a ProBowl level so it makes sense why they didn’t resign him right away. Given how he has preformed so far, good move by the Eagles FO. Regardless, DRC is still worth the 1 year – $1.13M deal plus a $650k player option in 2013 (my guess is he’ll opt out).

by cardinalbrown on Dec 16, 2011 5:23 PM MST up reply actions

If we are going to play Steelers defense we need to stack the shelves just like they do

I understand wanting to have an explosive offense but our depth on D is pretty thin.

by Jesse Reynolds on Dec 14, 2011 10:25 PM MST up reply actions

I don't think DRC comes back under any circumstances

He doesn’t fit the bill for the kind of physical CB that Horton wants, and lacks any kind of decent work ethic. Monster talent only gets you so far.

I think the biggest needs are obvious: OL, specifically Tackle on both sides. Depth on the D Line, Depth at OLB, Depth at WR.

We all bleed Cardinal Red, but most of us don't recognize it!

"It takes no talent to give great effort"--Chris Petersen

Patrick Peterson is the 2nd coming of Deion Sanders. They even wear the same number.

by robloosli on Dec 15, 2011 7:56 AM MST up reply actions

I would agree on the positions

but would probably argue that we need to draft starters at OLB and WR. Acho has been good all year, but we can’t rely on Schofield to be a starter. Find a solid OLB who can challenge Scho, if not take his spot. And obviously, we need a #2 WR, because Roberts hasn’t shown consistently that he can be that guy.
DLine depth is definitely another need though. Can’t have Dockett and Campbell playing ever defensive snap. Or if one of them gets injured, we have no adequate replacement

by GreaZzy on Dec 15, 2011 11:08 AM MST up reply actions

No doubt those are needs but...

We need an OT that can actually protect the QB. Our defense has been solid past 5-6 games and now we need to make the offense solid. Starts with protecting the quarterback there.

While I agree,

that DRC doesn’t fit the mold Horton may want, there is no denying Horton has this defense tackling better at every level. I think he could coach the risk taking out of DRC and make our D as dangerous as ever.

DRC deserves second shot.

Signing DRC to a one, possibly two year deal would give us another chance to see how he improves. A lil time with Lott and a lil time with Horton could be beneficial to him. Toler, PP, DRC, Wilson, and Marshall… Can you say beast Secondary?

Only reason I say Marshall as a FS is because we’ve seen him back there and he’s been good.

It would be advantageous for him to do so, he won’t start for any other team except the cards.

by forget on Dec 16, 2011 11:03 AM MST via mobile up reply actions

Actually Levi's cap hit is nearly $17M in 2012

No way in hell he is going to be back for that much. Now 1 year for $8M is an offer that may get him. That’s a ton of money for an underperforming LT but I believe you’ll start to see a huge increase in veteran FA contracts (already started to see that in 2011 under the new CBA). Levi is a tough case to judge because is his very good at run blocking, terrible at pass blocking, and great at committing false starts.

That's Draft.

There are no good O Linemen in FA this year. At least none that will hit the market. And those good ones who will, are going to be Centers and Guards. With how much we fought to get Deuce back, and how much we are paying Daryn Colledge I don’t think we’ll be chasing any of those. There will be viable Tackles in the Draft though and should be able to take over for Brown and Bridges. Although it is my opinion that Levi has been playing much better as of late.

Earlier in the season, I thought the Cardinals needed a #2 WR, because Doucet, Roberts, and co. weren’t taking enough pressure of Fitz, but I’m going to wait till the season is over to decide. After the last game, where three different WR’s got TD’s (Fitz, Doucet, Roberts, and for the first time since 2009 or something), there’s hope in that.

Should have kept Boldin

But filling that #2 slot wont be hard. FA would be intrested in us, if we #1 get our QB possition settled. Kolb hasnt showed us anything yet. Upgrade our line and grab our next SS. Take a hard look at the QB’s comming out.

by Reo Hays on Dec 16, 2011 2:11 AM MST reply actions

I agree with you about wanting Boldin in a Cardinal uniform still

But it really wasn’t our choice. Did we make mistakes by promising him an extension in ’07 and not fulfilling our promise? Yes. Did we try to make up for that by offering him a huge contract? Yes. But by that point the bridge was already burned and he was under no circumstance going to resign with us.

I think we are good at QB with Skelton and Kolb. But hey, if Landry Jones slips to us in the early 20’s (very optimistic about the rest of the season) then we should go for it. Kind of like the Rodgers scenario when the Pack took BPA even with an established starter

by cardinalbrown on Dec 16, 2011 5:37 PM MST up reply actions

Really?

I would say that QB and RB would be the two positions we definitely don’t draft this season. We have two young QBs battling for the #1 spot as is. The situation with Favre in GB was different because he was already fairly old when they Drafted ROdgers, and we’re looking ahead to the near future, when they would need a replacement for Favre. I don’t see us needing to find the next QB for a while.

My point was BPA

I hate to think this because it’s fatalistic, but Kolb has had 3 (maybe 4) concussions in the last 2 years. If this streak of concussions continue, he won’t be in the league long. All my point was you take BPA over need (with need factored in to the draft board)

If we can make the cap work, I’d love it. He doesn’t strike me as a headcase — more like he’s out there having fun, and the guy can really play.

If we draft in the middle of the pack?

DeCastro should be the pick. Restructure Brown’s contract and move him to RT and then look for a FA LT…Demetrius Bell or Jared Gaither. That could solidify the line for a few years.
