Do we now have a QB issue? (Kolb vs. Skelton)
While I think Kolb should still be the starter and that he can do well, I always thought John Skelton could be a good QB and was excited about his selection in the draft.
We hopefully get Ryan Williams back in top form next year. Both he and Beanie should be a powerful duo. Skelton's completion percentages are starting to climb. He doesn't turn his back on plays like Kolb does.
My take: Kolb should still start.... but the margin of error for him to "get going" is starting to thin. Thoughts?

Just finished watching the game
Skelton played OK at best. At this point, neither QB has proven he should be the starter. If I’m Whiz, Kolb is still the starter until he proves he’s incapable. Skelton has won the games, but has been wildly inconsistent. Kolb has lost the games with a defense that hasn’t held it together. 6 to one half dozen to the other. The Cardinals still have tp see what they have with Kolb.

They had three chances to win that game in the 4th. Including a defensive gift at the 5 yard line and went nothing but backwards. If that were Kolb you’d be blaming him for not winning in regulation.

Why is this question asked every week?
I’m not fickle. My answer has been the same as every other week. What about Skelton’s performance today makes you think he should start ahead of Kolb? Is it that we narrowly beat a terrible Browns team playing a backup QB? Is it that he failed to lead a TD drive on a 1st and 5 from the 5? How about that interception pass targeted towards Early? The Browns screwed up formations and didn’t even get Sheldon Brown on the field to cover Roberts. He was standing on the right hash marks uncovered with nobody within 20 yards of him. Skelton never even looked to the right side of the field before rolling left to throw the pick. The Oline was getting furious today on the bench after they constantly were being let down by their QB
Him and Kolb are on the same level so far, imo
Until Kolb proves otherwise.

could not have said better!!
Skelton will be a good QB. But needs time. Kolb at this time is better than Skelton in some respects – he so far throws better.
If Kolb plays the next two and plays well, and wins the games then it becomes a easier decision as they can cut him before the $7M roster bonus is due early March. If he plays and does not play well, then its a tough decision for the FO.
If he plays well and wins they cut him?

The only arguments I see from the Skelton homers:
1) He’s 6-1, enough said
No, not enough said. Yes, in the end, winning is everything, but Skelton hasn’t had a solid, consistent performance to guarantee him a starting job. Also, ever since Horton figured out the defense, and they started performing like a Top 5 defense, Kolb has only had one full game with them. In that game, he beat a good Dallas Cowboys defense. So I find it ridiculous when people compare Skelton’s games to Kolb’s first games at the beginning of the season. You can’t, because the defense played at an all new level right after Kolb got injured. And the one game Kolb played with them, he won.
2) Skelton’s clutch, and Kolb isn’t
Well, again, the one game Kolb played with this “new” defense, he was extremely clutch, and was a main reason the game was won in overtime. You honestly can’t use this until you’ve seen more games from Kolb.
3) Larry Fitzgerald gets more TD’s with Skelton
This is the worst argument out of all of them. Joe already made a post, it turns out Fitz has similar stats with both QB’s. Also, the only reason Fitz has more TD’s with Skelton than with Kolb is because Kolb’s biggest target in the RZ this year has been Doucet, which isn’t a bad thing at all. And also, Beanie Wells scores more with Kolb in the game, so it goes both ways.
Point is, Skelton has done his job as a backup, which is get wins. But he hasn’t done enough to win the starting job, and Kolb hasn’t done enough to lose it. Kolb is getting the start next week anyways, so there’s no point to this argument.

Blah,
1. You are what your record says you are.
2. Kolb is clutch huh? See the games against Baltimore, New York, or Washington.
3. The stats are very similar, but with less receptions Larry has found the end zone more with Skelton, last time I checked TD’s are how you win games in the NFL.
Fact is Skelton keeps improving week by week, and Kolb is keeping his injury prone label nice and shiny.

Let's try this again:
1. In that case, it’s not fair to judge Kolb’s games where the defense wasn’t performing like a Top 5 defense. So, he’s essentially 1-0.
2. He got screwed in New York by a bad ref call. Also, in Washington, on the potential game-winning drive, Kolb threw a pass to Chansi Stuckey, who caught it for a 1st Down and then fumbled it, thus giving them the ball back. That wasn’t Kolb’s fault. In Baltiomre, Kolb had a great 1st Half, and then the entire team fell apart, including the defense, which again brings me back to my first point that it’s not fair to judge Kolb in games the defense wasn’t performing like it is.
3. Beanie Wells gets more TD’s in games started by Kolb. Want to talk about that?
Joe Saunders: "They played a really good game, so hats off to us"

Again,
1. I’m sure there are plenty of QB’s without a top 5 defense that can win football games.
2. If the outcome of a game comes at the hands of the referee’s mistakes you weren’t going to win it anyways. Everyone knows you can’t leave the outcome of a game on the zebras.
3. Beanie got more TD’s in the BEGINNING of the season because he had fresh legs.

You forgot the best argument
4) Kolb is 1-4 in games where he has the ball at the end of the game for a chance to tie or win (L vs. WAS, SEA, NYG, BAL, W DAL).
Skelton is 5-0 in the same scenario (W STL x2, SF, CLE, PHI).
How’s them apples? Football is a 60 minute game. It doesn’t matter how well you play or how many times you have a lead- the only thing that dictates the W/L column is if you have the lead at the 60 min mark.
by tonyman121 on Dec 19, 2011 8:35 AM MST up reply actions 2 recs
Let's see:
WAS: Chansi Stuckey fumbled away the win.
NYG: Got screwed by ref’s
BAL: Had a great 1st Half, the ENTIRE TEAM fell apart in the 2nd Half
But you know, let’s change facts to better support our argument like you’re doing, right?
Joe Saunders: "They played a really good game, so hats off to us"
Which one of my facts was incorrect??
I just see you making excuses for the Kolb losses. The refs did not screw us in the Giants game. Stucky’s fumble was unfortunate, but it was just 1 play and alone did not cost us the game. We were dominated by WAS and were lucky to even have a chance. Yes, the whole team broke down against BAL. All Kolb had to do to win the game was score more than 3 pts the entire second half. Actually, he gave BAL more points off turnovers than that in the second half- so if all Kolb did was hand off to Wells we might have won the game. All I hear is “but, but, but….” Stop it already. Kolb sucks.
FACT- Kolb had the ball and a chance to win in 4/6 losses.
FACT- Skelton gets the ball with a chance to win or tie, and he WINS (5-0).
FACT- Skelton was down in the 4th quarter in all of his games and won 5/6 games. I guess the defense scored all those points, right???
FACT- the defense did not put up 300+ yards passing against the NFL’s 4th best pass defense (Browns)
FACT- the defense did not score 3 TD passes against the 49ers
FACT- the defense was actually not that good against the Browns, who scored more than their average for the year, and the defense gave up long drives for TDs
FACT- the Cardinals have 3 300-yard throwing games this season- 2 by Skelton
by tonyman121 on Dec 19, 2011 2:07 PM MST up reply actions 1 recs
You're contradicting yourself
“But it was just 1 play and alone did not cost us the game”
Then why do so many of Skelton’s games come down to the last drive? Isn’t that the biggest argument of Skelton fans? And also, you’re right, it wasn’t one play only. Kolb also had 2 TD’s in that game, along with 251 yards, and this was when the defense wasn’t performing like it is.
FACT-You have completely disregarded everything I said. First you said that Kolb isn’t clutch on the game-winning drives, now you’re saying he had many chances to win the game, and it doesn’t matter that Stuckey fumbled away the game.
Arguing with you is useless. You completely ignore facts.
Joe Saunders: "They played a really good game, so hats off to us"
by Skii on Dec 19, 2011 2:34 PM MST up reply actions 1 recs
Hmm... I am ignoring facts? What are you doing?
Not sure how you could ever argue Kolb is clutch on gamewinning drives since he pretty much sucks at it (he is 1 for 5). You state:
" First you said that Kolb isn’t clutch on the game-winning drives, now you’re saying he had many chances to win the game, and it doesn’t matter that Stuckey fumbled away the game."
those two events are not mutually exclusive. Kolb is for sure NOT clutch on gamewinning drives, AND had many opportunities to win the game. Maybe he did throw for 250 yards and 2 TDs- our offense was still dominated by WAS and we only had the ball for 20min in that game. It sucks that turnover ended the final drive (which was not guaranteeing any points if the fumble does not occcur, BTW), but how can you put ansolutely no blame on the man who runs the offense? And what about the other 3 games he lost with a chance to win? Why do you omit them from your analysis?
You are the one ignoring facts- in fact, you have a SELECTION BIAS in your view of kolb’s performance. You state, regarding Kolb’s clutchness:
“Well, again, the one game Kolb played with this "new" defense, he was extremely clutch, and was a main reason the game was won in overtime. You honestly can’t use this until you’ve seen more games from Kolb.”In doing so you are omitting the fact that kolb was 0/4 in the clutch in other games. You selected the one game that resulted in a W.
The FACT is, you need to be leading at the 60min mark. Skelton has been able to do it over and over again, despite sluggish starts. Kolb has only rarely been able to do it. How convenient for you that you throw out every start Kolb had before he was injured. Yup, the defense only started playing as soon as Skelton got on th field, so you can claim the defense is responsible for every one of Skelton’s victories. Yup, the defense was crap, and as soon as Skelton walked onto the field they became awesome. That is your argument and it is ridiculous. You have a team that performs poorly (loses) and then performs well (wins). The only variable that has changed is the starting QB. This is the key FACT you are omitting. I’m not stating that the defense has not improved over the year, because they clearly have. It has not been a switch- nor can your position explain the fact that despite crappy defense, Kolb had the ball and a chance to win or tie and could not.
Arguing with me is probably “useless” for you because your positions are weak and not defendable. Plus, you seem to take things personally when they are not directed at you personally.
by tonyman121 on Dec 19, 2011 5:07 PM MST up reply actions 1 recs
I agree
I think tonyman’s got a point., especially this part
you have a team that performs poorly (loses) and then performs well (wins). The only variable that has changed is the starting QB.
You could still start Kolb and win, but the team’s winning, so why change back?
I think it should be thought as not Skelton taking the starting job away from Kolb, but rather Skelton starting because the chances of the team winning goes up with him starting.
The Eagles did a similar thing with Vick and Kolb, I believe, so I don’t see why the Cards can’t do the same.
Thing is, it was not the only variable to change.
It’s just the most obvious to anyone not inside the locker room.
Agreed
Plenty of variables changed beside the QB. Here are some; Acho and Schofield started getting more playing time, they went to using Richard Marshall as FS in obvious passing downs, more of the defensive play book is being install every week, PP getting better each week with experience, and different teams that were far worse than the first seven.
Not excuses but other variables that have changed and are continuing to change each week.
Huge fan of the Steelers. (that includes "Steelers West")

I am all for Skelton
But what about a punt return TD and a blocked FG? Just like your example with Kolb, did Skelton win those games or did special teams and defense? Skelton does not deserve sole credit for all his wins. Period.
We started winning not because of our QB’s but because of our defense. Larry Fitzgerald has even being quoted as saying so.
I want our team to do well, no matter the QB but lets not get crazy here. Kolb started with no experience in our system and played with a bad D the blew two games (Giants and Ravens). Kolb also played poorly compounding the problem. Skelton has played poorly most of his starts and has been bailed out by the D. Did we forget the Ram game which Skelton threw for barely over 100 yards? Don’t get me wrong, I really like Skelton but he is consistently inconsistent, unless it is the fourth.
Lately Skelton has been playing much better and Kolb should be feeling his seat get warm but that’s just it, it’s still Kolb’s seat until he loses it in training camp.
by Jesse Reynolds on Dec 20, 2011 11:18 AM MST up reply actions 2 recs
In all fairness,
there were more variables than a new QB, Porter isn’t around, but then again Rhodes has pretty much been out the whole time Skelton has been center, I find it amazing that camp Kolb thinks the defense just automatically decided to go from playing bad to great in the matter of one game.

It did kind of happen like that
We shut down Baltimore for a half playing great defense. The next game was the Rams which we barely beat because the defense made two great stops, a blocked FG and Spangnoli making some really bad decisions. From there our D started to show it’s improvement.
Do you honestly believe we would have lost to the Giants, Seahawks and Redskins if our D had been playing this well? I don’t think we would have which would drastically change “Kolb’s record.” Or better known as the TEAMS record.
by Jesse Reynolds on Dec 21, 2011 1:13 PM MST up reply actions
Why do you keep playing the "what if" game?
If our defense was as good as the 2005 Ravens, we’d be 12-2 right now. If the defense played perfectly every down, we’d be 14-0 and be +67 on turnovers.
Look, I will state again the defense has shown improvement. But the defense has played WELL ENOUGH all season to keep us close in basically all our games. I’m not sure what more you can ask of them. If the defense was spectacular against the Giants, maybe it doesn’t come down to Kolb’s last posession, and all we need to do is sit on the ball to run out the clock. But that’s not what happened. Kolb had his chance and he blew it.
I was as optimistic (but maybe more realistic) about Kolb after the aquisition. I did think we gave up too much for a player no one else really wanted. But watching him play this season, I see nothing that elevates him much higher than Derrick Anderson last season. He does seem to read the defense well, as can be seen from his long touchdowns on blown coverages (several on the year). But when pressured, he has looked lost and frightened. Again, I had NO DOUBT IN MY MIND we would lose the Baltimore game at halftime. I had very little confidence in Kolb after his first 8 starts. Did he play well against Dallas for 1/2 of a game? Yes. He played well enough to win the game. But to me (as opposed to everyone else on this board) that was the anomaly, not the sign of things to come. I hope I am wrong.
I see Skelton differently. Yes, he’s made lots of mistakes. But he plays boldly and confidently. Aside from that one drive from the 5 yard line- basically every Skelton red zone posession seems to end in a TD. He seems to take maximum gain from his opportunities, especially (and maybe only) late in games. Would it be better if he played the entire game like it was the 4th quarter? Obviously. But I see progress every time out. Was Skelton pivotal in our win (#1) at the Rams? Maybe not. But how can you argue against his performances against the 49rs (#2) and Cleavland?
I think our best opportunity to win comes from playing Skelton, and his record certainly reflects that. I would not be terribly upset if we start Kolb this week. He certainly has this year to figure out his worth. If he loses to Cinici, I think he is done here and we see Skelton vs. Seattle as a sign of things to come. If he wins, then great. We continue our playoff hunt and can argue some more about the value of our defense and QB play in determining a win.
Just give up,
I catch a lot of flak for being a Skelton homer, but Skii is absolutely the same way about Kolb. He just thinks he’s different.

Flip flop game?
Okay then. Because I totally have changed my position on wanting to start Kolb. But yes, if you mean the fact that I’m flexible in my support for each QB, then you’re correct. Unlike you, I’m willing to cheer for each QB, and I’m willing to hope that either QB does good.
I’m done with this argument. You obviously won’t see any point other than your own, so let’s just end this.

the idea of Kolb’s margin of error coninues to be small. Come on guys. the margin of error for most of our team is small. I have been excited about the last 6 games, but lets be honest the margin have been so small the one error one way or other we lose. We are a better team than shows but we still have work to do
Kolb came alive in second half of Dallas game lets see if it continues against a good bengal team and if he can pull it off against the sea hawks. As long as our OL sucks as bad as they are face it they are usually good against less physical defenses,Beanie will have to do most of it on his own. Kolb will continue to be pressured until we fix that line. Miller as OC please still passing like we got Warner in the red zone, he needs to go
When Indy lost Manning the team went in the toilet
When Kolb got hurt the Cards remained consistent. We were losing close games, and now we are winning close games. It is getting rare for any QB to play an entire season. I see Kolb and Skelton as co-starters. One or the other might be number one on the depth chart, but we need both of them. They will push each other in camp, when there actually is a camp. When number one inevitably goes down, number two will be able to step in and hopefully not lose a beat.
Chicago Cubs - Arizona Cardinals 168 combined years and no rings
I guess I'm a masochist
Why do you poison this site with rational thought?
Yeah, I agree, the team is going to be happy to keep both quarterbacks going forward. The Kolb haters that want him gone are going to be disappointed. He’s going to be around for at least one more year. If next season goes like this one though he might not make it beyond that. Skelton is much less expensive. Kolb would cost too much to be the #2.
FACT is
Skelton is on his way to being a elite QB and he’s only been in the NLF for 2 yrs, 2 shortened yrs. That’s half the time Kolb has, at best, and we can’t say that about Kolb…. yet.
AND, we are in the opposite situation than last year … we have 2 very good QB’s to fight over.
Sweet huh?
Come on
I am excited about Skelton but he hasn’t even put together 4 quarters of quality football and you are declaring him on his way to elite? That is too much of a reach for me. I see the potential but I will wait til next year before I believe I will know where Skelton will end up in the league.

I'll be honest
This is my biggest problem with Skelton fanboys. They say such insane comments like this, it’s hard to take anything they say seriously.
Skelton fan...
Early on I have taken the stand that Skelton is the future of this team if he stays healthy and gets the time to improve. He’s not there yet but the problem is that Kolb is average and, for various reasons, not getting better. So the question is where do you invest the playing time? Long term I think Skelton is the better investment, short term its a toss up. Bottomline, I go with the guy that brought me to the dance… Skelton. Elite… not until he goes to the Superbowl and even then maybe not his first trip. Top 10, yes in 2 or 3 years.
Skelton - QB rating of 69.8
Not so far down that road to elite status. It would be killer if it turned out to be so but it’s getting way ahead of things to say so now.
I do agree that Skelly can be a damn good Qb but it's a few seasons off. I've been high on him since the Cards drafted him.
I personally don’t believe we have the answer at Qb long term on the roster. I wish I could say differently but alas I can’t.

I said "on his way", I didn't he was there yet.
If you can’t see it then all I can say is hide and watch. Bottom line, he’s doing better than Kolb in a shorter time. With, I might, no where near the quality teachers that Kolb has had.
Having said that. I do feel that Kolb does deserve the chance to fulfill his potential. Next year will be the time of truth.
But, Skelton will be a elite QB in the NFL.
Some clarity on Skelton's clutch 4th qtr
I´m all for Skelton if he plays well. That said, here is a snippet of last game’s 4rth qtr and OT stats
Skelton’s last eight passes of regulation: 3-of-8, 26 yards, no first downs. He still got credit for a fourth-quarter rally and an overtime win. Clutch, baby.
From twitter
His rehab has been going very well, no setbacks or anything. Obviously he’s not coming back this season, but will be in training camp 100% healthy. Because they treated his injury so quickly, there is a very high success rate. Training camp will tell the tale, but i like his chances

Ryan Williams
Guys, why aren’t we talking about Ryan Williams? I am excited about having a two punch tandum of Beanie and Williams in there next year. It will take the pressure off of Kolb/Skelton and make us a multi-faceted team. We can truly play keep away. We still need a legit number 2 receiver, maybe Roberts is that guy and we need a better O-line.

I think Roberts is
He has really shown improvement. I think our WR group behind Fitz is underrated. Once one of our QB’s gets more comfortable spreading the ball around I think you will see how dangerous they can all be.
