Greetings From Cincy Jungle: Ask A Bengals Fan
Greetings Arizona Cardinals fans. It's hard to believe that the regular season is winding down as we heading into the 16th week of the season. Both of our teams are on the outside looking in, with a shot to make the postseason but needing a little (to alot) of help getting there.
Most of you have heard about our rookies and improbable run to an 8-6 record and quite honestly, it's pretty awesome. Bengals fans have felt a sort of kinship with Cardinals fans because of our respective owners. Though I don't know how you guys feel about Bidwell since your Super Bowl run, 99% of Bengals fans still hate Mike Brown.
Anyway if you have any questions about the Bengals, either myself, my writing team or some in my community will drop by thoughout the rest of the week to answer what you're interesting in knowing.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

hello Cardinals fan
Cant wait to watch the game….Arizona has been playing tough the past 6 weeks…..I think you guys hit the lotto with Peterson…him and AJ Green may be the two best guys taken this year….what are your thoughts about the game?
The top 7 draft picks have been beasts this year
It was an incredible draft considering the lockout.
Besides the beast that is AJ Green and Andy Dalton, who else from your draft class has shown up?
by Jesse Reynolds on Dec 21, 2011 12:56 PM MST up reply actions
Nobody.
Third round pick was Dontay Moch, who has battled injury all year and has yet to be activated. 4th was Clint Boling who filled in at OG for a suspended Bobbie Williams, he was eventually benched but did show some promise. 5th was SS Robert Sands who looked miserable in the preseason and hasn’t been activated. 6th was the wrong receiver to pick out of Stanford, Ryan Whalen. He’s been active for a few games including the game against the Rams but he isn’t near the caliber of Doug Baldwin. The rest of the picks failed to make the 53 or PS.
Outside of the first two picks I consider the draft a bust. Lots of Bengals fans think that Moch can be an impact starter but I am very skeptical.
Totally disagree
Seven of the nine players the Bengals drafted ARE on the 53-man roster. Sands is in development, sort of like Taylor Mays and Whalen is just buried on the depth chart at wide receiver with two guys entering free agency after this year.
This draft class is alright and could be fantastic given more time to develop.
But I do understand your POV.

This looks like it will be a low scoring game to me
Our defense is playing at an EXTREMELY high level and we have been surprising all fans of the teams we play against. We do not know as of now who will be the starter for the game either (Kolb had a concussion recently) and perhaps Whiz will ride the hot hand (Skelton). I am really looking forward to seeing your young emerging team because it reminds me a lot of the Cardinals with youth coming together and performing very well. You guys have some nice draft picks in the future though (Carson deal comes to mind)….

dalton is still a rookie
and rookie qb’s toss interceptions. if arizona has a hot defense, this could be a phonebooth type game. battle of the lines, team with least mistakes wins.
hard for cincy fans, most of us are beanie wells fans and this week we have to hope he has an off week.

He is 3 yards away from his first 1000 yard season
Playing at home.
He has been plagued by a knee injury this season but I expect to see some pep in his step today.

Merry Christmas AZ Cardinal Fans
As a lifelong Bengals fan, I will admit to rooting for the Cardinals in your Super Bowl appearance against the hated Steelers. Now of course this week, I’ll be hoping Andy Dalton/A.J. Green/Cedric Benson score a zillion points against your defense :) Good luck and please note it will probably be colder in Cincinnati than what you are used to.

So outside of the ESPN famed Dalton and Green
Who else on the team is making a huge impact?
And I read that Green messed up his shoulder pretty bad, will he be available for this game? If he isn’t how much does that change your offense?
by Jesse Reynolds on Dec 21, 2011 12:58 PM MST reply actions
RE
Green’s shoulder isn’t too bad. He returned to practice today and should be in the game on Saturday. Other than Green and Dalton, Jermaine Gresham, Andrew Hawkins and sometimes Jerome Simpson all have the capacity to have huge games.

He was the same beast you see now from day one.
Our OC last year…. ignored the tight end as receivers, and us fans still don’t think our current OC finds enough ways to get him the ball.
RE:
Plus look at the defense. Guys like Thomas Howard, Nate Clements, Reggie Nelson, Carlos Dunlap (when he’s played) and so forth. It’s this defense that really dictates whether the Bengals play well or not.

fun to type that.
The bengals defense is the heart of this team.
of course you get sad after you type that, knowing the injuries have hurt this defense in a major way.

And on the other side of the ball..
Geno Atkins, starting DT next to the NT with the hair (Peko), is one of the top 5 DTs in the league. He’s undersized but in the good John Randle way. I believe he still leads the league in sacks by a DT and is a lot faster than most RBs think, had a hell of a game against Steven Jackson.
Carlos Dunlap is a monster at LDE but last week was his first game back from injury and it was a quiet one. However if he’s back to form you should hope whoever plays RT eats his Wheaties Saturday morning.
Thomas Howard was a Free Agent singing from Oakland and he’s been a vital cog for the defense. Excellent in coverage on the weak side, he’s a freak athlete at the LB position.
I see that Josh has added the other names on D as I’m writing this but these three are the real impact guys in my book. Reggie and Nate are the best DBs and both makes plays. Nate is a sure tackler who can come on the Blitz and is great in run support. Reggie leads the team in INTs and has turned into a very solid safety.
with you cry
geno, dunlap, howard. how often do we call those names weekly as bengals fans.
" Mike Brown is the owner that Cincy doesn't deserve, not the one it needs..."
espn famed?
i didn’t know espn talked about anyone but tebow tebow tebow.
as for impact players on the active roster: gresham, leonard, simpson, and hawkins.
gresham (te) could be an probowl star on a big market team. in cincy, the coaches don’t use him enough. leonard is the all hands back with a clutch streak. again, the coaches don’t call his number enough. simpson is a talented wr but lacks technique and finish. hawkins is a young undrafted wr with a ton of heart. hawkins has a way of making plays happen when the bengals get him the ball.
as for green, its huge if he can’t play. dalton relies on tossing jump balls to green.
" Mike Brown is the owner that Cincy doesn't deserve, not the one it needs..."
I never minded the Bengals
I liked Boomer Esiason, and always thought the helmets looked cool.
From an outsiders perspective, Dalton has looked inconsistent. He seems to play very well one week and poorly the next. Am I way off on that?
Also, AJ Green is a beast, but P Twice played against him in the SEC. Who do you think wins that matchup?
We all bleed Cardinal Red, but most of us don't recognize it!
"It takes no talent to give great effort"--Chris Petersen
Patrick Peterson is the 2nd coming of Deion Sanders. They even wear the same number.
I wouldn’t say Dalton is inconsistent as much as he isn’t able to completely take a game over by himself yet. When the skill players around him elevate their game he has the skill to take advantage of it and win games. When the team let’s him down, his play reflects that. We hope that with time he’ll be able to take over games.
AJ wins that matchup. The only SEC corner that gave him fits was Joe Haden and AJ has gotten the better of Joe so far. Peterson is going to be an outstanding corner but from what I’ve seen of him his technique isn’t quite there and AJ has made corners with far better technique look silly.
I'd say Dalton is a rookie
when looked at through that lens, he’s been playing very well and stacks up nicely against elite QBs and their rookie years. He’s a good player and we hope he keeps getting better
he's a rookie
even peyton manning had a rough rookie season. dalton is also on a rebuilding team. the bengals in 2011 were picked by most national media rags prior to game 1 of the season to go 0-16.
" Mike Brown is the owner that Cincy doesn't deserve, not the one it needs..."
Most people forget with the good season we have had
That this is still a rebuilding team
AJ Green = Optimus Prime
Who is the best player on the Bengals that I probably don't know about?
Note that, like the Cardinals, the Bengals don’t get much media coverage so besides the obvious stars on the Bengals, i am quite in the dark
Follow me on Twitter at @AlexDavidson68
LT, Andrew Whitworth. He’s had a down year compared to 2010 but he’s a top 5 LT in my book, top 10 in many others’.
TE, Jermaine Gresham. You may know about him because he’s gotten a lot of play as a fantasy TE but if you don’t he’s a freak athletically. Kind of a meaner Jermichal Finley. Unfortunately the Bengals don’t find enough ways to get him the ball.
DT, Geno Atkins & DE, Carlos Dunlap. Mentioned both of them further up in the comments if you’d like to know more about them.
Dang
This could be a long day for our OLine. Our RT, either Brandon Keith or Jeremy Bridges, are both awful, so i fully expect Skelton or Kolb to be under pressure a lot on Saturday. Levi Brown has been playing a lot better the past few weeks. Hopefully he can keep it up so our QB will only have to run for his life from one side

4th in the league in sacks.
Pressure is not a problem for the Bengals. However the secondary is very weak due to injury and a general lack of depth. Hey, at least Big Duece will have extra motivation, I don’t know if you recall but the Bengals got him under contract and then cut him loose after he failed his physical (weight).
Big Duece won't get to see the field
He hasn’t gotten to play for us this year LOL that fat bastard.

We have a seven man rotation on the D line
It was 8 but Pat Simms one of our best run stoppers went on IR. Any one of the guys could start on most teams. They just wear O lines down and you really see it in the second half.

Andrew Hawkins is another
Little brother of Artrell (former Bengals and Patriots DB). When the football gets in his hands, he’s very shifty and slippy. He can turn a bubble screen that defenders immediately recognize into a 20-30 yard gain.

Cry got the big ones and Josh got one of my favorite players in Hawkins, so I might need to reach a little bit for one.
I’m going to say our FB, Chris Pressley. The difference in the running game is night and day without him. If you see one of your LBs hit the ground on a run play, I can almost assure you it was Pressley.
Also, another one of my personal favorite players is our FS Reggie Nelson (who is the guy in my avatar.) He has some lapses that make Bengals fans mad, but he can make some huge plays on defense- he’s a big hitter (though he has problems wrapping up) and when he’s in position he can make a lot of plays on the ball.

Are the Jets losing some games pretty much the only way you make the playoffs?
The Cowboys winning CAN help the Cards playoff chances quite a bit. We may be on the opposite sides of the fence in that game as well.
Is it true that this game is a blackout in Cinci?
Pretty disappointing even if it is right near Christmas…. Right in the playoff race and you can’t even get the game sold out? I guess playing the Cardinals has something to do with that hahahaha

some disagreement among cincy jungle fans as to what is causing the situation
goes something like:
1) ticket prices
2) local economy
3) 21 years of mike brown
4) fair weather fans
5) winning
6) all of the above
i believe its prices, economy, and brown. others feel differently about it

The Bengals secondary started to gel last week against the Rams
for the first time since Leon Hall went down, with no noticeable lapses in coverage. Jones and Clemens held their water well, though Jones likes to take chances at making a big play. Our Linebackers are a physical group Led by Rey Malauga, who handle the run well. Reggie Nelson has developed well this year and Bengals are used to seeing his braids flying towards the ball. He is a striker when he gets there. Our front four rotation is tough on the best offensive lines and Zimmer will scheme against any weakness he can find. Offensively we have had our issues, the loss of Bobbie Williams was tough but, But I expect better line play this week. Dalton to Green is the show everyone will be watching for, but Simpson, Gresham and Benson can cause problems of their own. Here’s to good clean game without injuries. It will be a physical battle that much is certain.
How good is it be a Cincy fan right now?
Not only did you find one heck of a WR/QB combo that will only get better with time, but you also got a bounty for a QB that wasnt even on the field? How much trust is there in Marvin Lewis’ ability to draft talent throughout the jungle?
Formerly known as Cardsfan928, If you wanna grab a quick game of madden, my screenname is also my Xbox name.
The trust in Marv's ability to evaluate talent is very good.
Now that Mike Brown seems to have given up some control in that area we have steadily been drafting well..

stick with traps, counters, screens, and the flat. make the bengals pay for over pursuing the ball. running into the teeth of the defensive line is not the way to win the game.

what is the feelings in Arizona in regards to the Kolb trade?
Are you guys mad about it?? Do you guys think Kolb needs some more time?? Or is Skelton your man??
Depends who you ask
A lot of people feel we were fleeced and those opinions have been exersterbated by the recent play of John Skelton.
I thought that trade was expensive but worth it. After watching DA attempt to play the game of football, I was willing to pay the price for any kind of improvement.
Personally I believe that once Kolb has an offseason under his belt he will be a very competent QB in the league. I think our offense is one that Kolb can excel in. But I have no doubts that Skelton could be something special. He is young and with time could be a very good QB.
by Jesse Reynolds on Dec 22, 2011 1:09 PM MST up reply actions
Definitely depends on who you ask
Because there are many Skelton fans around Arizona and on this blog… But to me it is very hard to justify losing the 2nd round pick we gave up. Losing DRC was acceptable to me because we play a style of defense that is completely opposite of how DRC plays… If Kolb goes into next season not looking like a quality NFL starter then the trade was kind of a flop to me. We absolutely had to do something to address the QB situation but if he doesn’t even earn the starting job moving forward it will be giving up a lot for not much. The price for QBs nowadays are pretty steep though, I must say.
I (in my own mind) envisioned us ending up around 8-8 or 9-7 this season so we are right on pace for that. I expected Kolb to struggle in his first season regardless if this was supposed to be a win now trade. My decision on the trade will be fully made dependent on what Kolb does next season.

This is the classic "play Kolb cause we gave up a lot" and I get it but
I can’t agree with it while the playoffs are still a possibility this year. I have to play the guy I think gives us the best chance now. Then let’s see during the offseason who the better guy is for next year – I am fairly certain Skelton will be the 2012 starting QB, but we will have to see.
We argue a lot about this between games, but I think we are cheer for whoever plays during the games – I know I do anyway.

I didn't even state who should finish the season?
I want a QB competition for training camp. I said “going into next season” which I was speaking of the off-season stuff. But I am not sure either QB gives us a better chance to win. I haven’t seen anything from either QB to make me jumping for joy. I think it is just personal preference who you think gives the team the best chance to win.

clearly mixed
there is a debate going on. Most are too heavily emotionally invested in seeing Kolb succeed. I’d rather dump his contract and continue with Skelton. They’ve been statistically similar, except, IMHO, Skelton is cheaper and comes through in the 4th quarter.
LOL. That's funny. I hope it's not true.
I have as much emotional investment in Kolb as I do in a sack of potatos. Doesn’t mean I don’t think he still gets the full opportunity to prove himself here. Skelton has a lot of appeal but he is still very raw and it shows. Much too soon to kick Kolb to the curb. It’s worth keeping both of them around through at least next season. I love how everyone who wants to ditch Kolb points at the money like it’s their own personal bank account taking the hit.
None of us are 'emotionally' invested in Kolb
Don’t be silly. He’s not our golden boy. Reasonable Cards fans want him to succeed simply because we gave up so darn much for him and that’s it. If he fails it was a waste of a 2nd round pick, a good player (DRC), and a lot of team $$$. That’s pretty hard to stomach.
As far a the emotions and Kolb I would say the opposite for me - I never felt good about this deal and have no emotional investment/tie to Kolb
by Drullin'OverDaCards on Dec 23, 2011 2:04 PM MST up reply actions
I never liked the deal either
But now that it’s done, we are left hoping that it works out for the best. That’s why I don’t understand the fans that want him to fail and get cut.
I agree, I will cheer for whoever is playing
I would not cut Kolb – give him an offseason to get up to speed and let him and Skelton compete. Maybe he is the real deal, I just don’t see it yet.
I do think Skelton gives us a better chance to win this week – but its not an anti-kolb thing for me just pro-Skelton today.
by Drullin'OverDaCards on Dec 23, 2011 3:36 PM MST up reply actions
What I meant about emotion is...
…that many fans feel a sense of “loss” based on what we gave up, so we want to keep hoping he will succeed so that the trade was worth it. They would (if only it were up to them) make a poor personel decision based on this feeling.
Opposed to what others have stated on this form, the correct “business” attitude to Kolb (assuming he doesn’t pan out) is to cut the loss as soon as possible without incurring further financial loss. This would be akin to paying too much for a stock and watching it crash. You don’t want to sell because you hope it will come back up. But every day it loses more and more value.
If he doesn't pan out
Then absolutely the Cardinals should cut him. But we don’t know if he will pan out yet, so why should we cut him after one season?
Follow me on Twitter at @AlexDavidson68
That's just it -- "assuming he doesn't pan out"
It seems many have already made that assumption, but all we really have is a short-term window to by. To use the stock analogy again, let’s say you invest a lot in a stock and it drops in the short term. Is assuming that it will never improve and dumping it really the best strategy? Most smart investors would say no. If in the longer term it looks like it won’t recover, then you have to consider cutting your losses, but a knee-jerk dumping based on one bad frame is just a guaranteed loss.
Regarding the Bidwills.
Mike Bidwill is showing that he may have an idea of how to successfully run a professional sports franchise. Something his dad never has shown.
would you take mike brown for mike bidwill straight up?
how about we add a conditional pick to be named later?
(yeah, wouldn’t make that deal either)
