Ask Field Gulls - Act II

Hey there, RotB!

Well well well. After a 1-6 start and 2-6 start respectively the Cardinals and Seahawks are now playing for a chance at a .500 finish after their playoff hopes were dashed on Saturday. Really, that's all I got. The first meeting was an ugly 13-10 game in Seattle in which Kevin Kolb was intercepted late in the 4th quarter with Arizona in position to at least tie the game. It gave Seattle their first win of the season and 3rd straight victory against the Cards.

There really isn't else much to say. Both teams have been on a hot streak but it's too little too late for the playoff pipe dream. Now it's the battle for 2nd place in the NFC West, which unbeknown to the media, will be guaranteed the same record as the 2nd place team in their darling NFC East.

Ask away about the Seahawks and Field Gulls will answer everything.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Who should the Seahawks worry about on the Offensive and Defensive side of the ball?

by Alex Mann on Dec 26, 2011 5:55 PM MST reply actions

Offensively - Beanie Wells

Apparently our run D has just dropped off in recent weeks. We aren’t allowing 100 yard rushers but we are allowing yards nonetheless. 178 last game against SF.

Defensively – Pretty much anyone who can pressure Tarvaris Jackson. I have no idea how your DBs are other than Peterson so maybe we can get success there. But as long as Jackson is rushed into a decision you can turn him into a disaster.

Adrian Wilson made the pro bowl again.

Rhodes is back. He made two fumble recoveries last week.

The integration of Ray Horton’s defense is much farther along now than what you saw in the earlier match up. Now anyone and everyone might come on a blitz on any given down.

Wait...you can blitz?

No one told Carroll and Bradley you can blitz with more than your non-pass rushing linebackers.

Ha, ha.

The point being is that the defense that the Cardinals played in the first game was a stripped down simplified version of what Horton’s scheme is. While currently it’s still not the complete package it is vastly more complex. Jackson will have a lot more to deal with when attempting to read this defense now.

We love Sidney Rice

Great hands, good speed, but Jackson’s limitations as a QB (along with Charlie Whitehurst’s) leave the grade incomplete. The injuries really didn’t help things so we will need to wait another year.

But he was on your roster for a full year. The injuries are something that seem to come with him, which is why i asked how you guys felt.

Great player and addition (still 25 years old)

but crappy QB play hindered his numbers.

Nice to see the NFC West improving with what the Cards and Hawks did over the second half of the season

The West is better than the NFC East this year.

Besides QB, what is the biggest offseason target for the Hawks?

Pass Rusher

I don’t think we’ll be particularly picky where it comes from (DE or OLB) but our terrible pass rush needs to improve and stop leaving the CBs covering for all day.

We also could use (in no particular order) LB depth/upgrades, TE depth, Change-of-pace back to pair with Marshawn Lynch, DT upgrades

Jury is out on the first two, excellant in the middle rounds, the usual question marks in the late rounds. Other Field Gullers will surely chime in

Round 1 – James Carpenter, RT [Starter, IR] – flashed potential in the run game, slowly improving in pass protection.

Round 2 – (Traded)

Round 3 – John Moffit, RG [Starter, IR] – Average to slightly above-average run blocker, slightly below average pass protector.

Round 4 (1) – K.J. Wright, OLB [Starter] – Went through rough patches but has developed as a LB solid in all aspects of the game that I can think of off the top of my head. A HUGE upgrade over Aaron Curry, I am excited over him.

Round 4 (2) – Kris Durham, WR [Active Roster, IR] – Didn’t get to see enough playing time to judge him.

Round 5 (1) – Richard Sherman, CB [Starter] – Has had rookie mistakes and comes off as a bit cocky (taunting penalty). Over all, has played excellently. Would be surprised if he doesn’t get a significant amount of starter time next year. 6’3" with good turn and run abilities, plays well but is susceptible to the double move. Shut down AJ Green when they played in Week 8.

Round 5 (2) – Mark LeGree, DB [Active Roster] – Situational and ST player

Round 7 (1) – Lazarius Levinston, DT [Active Roster] – Active as part of the DT rotation. Average in most aspects of game (My personal impressions).

Round 7 (2) – Malcom Smith, LB [Active Roster] – Situational and ST player.

Durham barely played before he got hurt so he gets an incomplete.

Levingston has gotten into a few games this year and is basically depth at this point. Doug Baldwin has really shined and is leading our team in receiving. Another rookie receiver, Ricardo Lockette had a big catch last week in his first game action which was exciting. Brandon Browner while not a rookie is still in his first pro season has made a lot of big plays while also giving up a lot of big plays, he has been a great addition to the team and I would expect to hear his name a few times on Sunday.

but I think he’s pretty much being red-shirted this year. He came into camp with the injury and was put on the IR relatively late in the season.

I can’t say as I dig deep enough, but your line is essentially 3 DT’s and a rush end correct?

by INSOMAN1ATIC on Dec 26, 2011 10:35 PM MST reply actions

Correct

Clemons has played well, he is an asset in stopping the run and is a dangerous pass rusher. Our interior rotation of DTs has done an excellent job of bottling up the run, but is underwhelming when it comes to rushing the passer. The other DE, Red Bryant we absolutely love. Gets decent push in pass rush and is a force when it comes to setting the edge and stopping the run.

Lately, we’ve been blitzing Earl Thomas or KJ Wright with some frequency. It has paid off fairly well, Red Bryant, all 330lbs of him, got a pick-6 against the Bears two weeks ago.

by chin64 on Dec 27, 2011 12:34 AM MST up reply actions

Yea i saw that

It was pretty awesome. I’ve watched a couple Seattle games and I gotta say Red Bryant is a beast. Clemens is an above average edge rusher, I remember him from our first meeting. I gotta ask, do u guys miss tatupu at all?

I like what u guys have been doin with Thomas he’s proven to be a very versatile, good player. Your secondary is playing surprisingly well right now with those two young corners and young safeties. Thomas and Chancellor both had a great game against us the first time.

Both our teams have dramatically improven on defense since then, and both our offenses are still stuck in the mud. I’m interested to see which team can get the fastest start offensively because that team will likely win this game. But watch for the late game heroics of AZ because we are very capable of turning a 10pt 4th quarter defecit to a 4th quarter or OT win.

Good luck and let’s hope for a great, injury free game.

by cgcardzfan on Dec 27, 2011 4:54 AM MST via mobile up reply actions

Hoping for an injury-free game indeed.

About missing Tatupu – I don’t, really. I love the guy and loved having his smarts setting up the D, but he was really hobbled and slowed these last couple of years. Maybe he would have done better this year with Mebane back to 1-tech and Branch being able to keep blockers off of him, but we’ll never know. Having said that our LB depth is horrific, so I guess I miss him in the “well at least he’s an LB body” sense.

Work hard, play harder, rest easy.

sure, it knocked your TE out, but damn was it nice! And legal, too, front-blindside hit on an INT return.
We…don’t miss Tatupu. Heater has stepped in nicely, Hill’s back in shape, and Wright is playing like a madman. All in all, better than last year.

Actually, it's probably likely to be Tarvaris.

Even if we draft a QB, T-Jack has done well enough as a game-manager where the coaching staff is probably fine with letting him start while letting a rookie stay on the bench.

Unless we do something crazy like sign Peyton Manning or Drew Brees.

No Skittles? D*** you, what kind of monster are you?

In all seriousness though, here’s hoping for a great game and no bad injuries to either side, our division’s gonna garner a lot more respect around the league next year, feels like 2012 and beyond are going to be fun.

Can’t no one call the NFCW the doormat of the league anymore. Cards’, ’Hawks, and Niners all sporting pretty potent defenses and strong ground attacks, Rams actually have a beastly pass-rush, if only they could sort out the mess that is their offense and secondary.

Of course… three teams have pretty significant long-term question marks at QB, that’ll make for an interesting off-season.
