2011 NFL Draft Results: Arizona Cardinals Pick Sam Acho For Some Pass Rushing
As we get into these later rounds, Cardinals fans will look for Ken Whisenhunt and Rod Graves to pick players that will fill gaps on our football team. That means a guy that can rush off the edge, some sort of an offensive lineman and maybe, just maybe, a signal caller.
Well folks, the Arizona Cardinals fourth round pick fills one of those holes as they take Sam Acho, DE/OLB, Texas.
Here are some thoughts and stats on Acho from Darren Urban over at Azcardinals.com
The Cardinals begin the final day of the draft by getting a pass rusher they needed in Texas linebacker Sam Acho in the fourth round. At 6-foot-1 and 260 pounds, Acho is going to have a transition to outside linebacker in a 3-4, but as a senior, he had nine sacks, five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. He was also a three-time all-academic selection in the Big 12.
NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said he is a ‘tweener, not quite an OLB but not quite a DE. But with O'Brien Schofield and Will Davis already around (along with veterans Clark Haggans and Joey Porter for now), Acho could be a pass rusher only at first until he is ready for something bigger.
Acho said he actually played OLB the first two years of college before moving to defensive end, so he expects to be able to make the transition. Interestingly, he said he had no specific contact with the Cardinals before the draft, so he was a little surprised. But Acho - who comes across as smart as his resume indicates - clearly is happy to be coming to Arizona.
By all indications, Acho appears to be a very intelligent player that can get to the quarterback. He creates havoc in the opponents' backfield, causing fumbles and creating turnovers.
Now we can wait for the presser and see what Whisenhunt and Graves have to say about Arizona Cardinals new pass rusher, Sam Acho.

Great, great pick for you guys.

Thank you...
Crossing my fingers for him to end up even as a poor man’s Orakpo
You don't need to cross your fingers. Acho will be good from day one.

I hope so

In my OLB rankings
7. Sam Acho – I’ll make you folks aware right now: I love this kid, and I think he can be something special. I have him a little higher than most, but I think Acho is a very complete linebacker. I think he will come in and be able to do all the things you want as far as coverage and run stopping is concerned, and he has the ability and moves to be a dominant pass rusher. He’s a little under the radar, and that’s perfect for the 49ers to grab him in the second round. 17 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, five forced fumbles and fumble recoveries, and then on top of that, 17 quarterback hurries .. I’ll take it. Acho has good moves when it comes to pass rushing, though he favored the power in college. I like his ability to maybe lose a little weight and take a more finesse-based approach in the NFL. This is a guy who we could start opposite Haralson/Gibson/Brooks and let Lawson walk.

Hah...
I’ve been hoping for Kaepernick and the team that tends to always have our number grabbed him…O well
I called it last night
But there weren’t really a lot of 3-4 OLBs left and he seemed like a good choice. Everything I read about him being a hard worker with great character also seemed to fit what Whiz likes to draft.

You could have taken him in the second and not have been reaching/would have been getting good value.

Yeah, I saw that he was projected as a 2nd or 3rd round pick at one point.

I voted that he'll be a reliable rotation player to start
But he could turn into something more, imo.
Another
Player i was pretty high on coming to this draft… What i noticed with all of our choices, has been high character and intelligence guys…. Sturdivant is the exception but even he only has the one astericks… outside of that hes been good.
I was pretty pissed off when our 2nd came and we took a rb over ayers, but the rest of our draft looks good to me… and i will get over our anger, if williams can hold on to the ball unlike our other rb’s.
dont know a whole lot about the other 4 picks so i dont have an opinion other than what i have read… looks like we’re gonna finally run more… and hopefully we’ll be able to pry palmer from the bungles….
Think of the RB situation this way
Whisenhunt stresses competition and he is indirectly telling Hightower and Wells they either get better or will be benched. The more I think about the pick the more I like it.
