Undrafted Free Agents
In my attempt to quit my complaining about the draft, I've decided to take a look at some undrafted players that I would love for the Cards to go after.
Tim Barnes- Center, 6'4", 310 lbs. Missouri
Derek Hall- Offensive Tackle, 6'5", 300 lbs. Stanford
David Mims-Offensive Tackle, 6'8", 331 lbs. Virginia Union-if they want to go with a big boy to develop.
Mark Herzlich- ILB, 6'4", 248 lbs. BC. Good job NFL, no one could draft the cancer survivor?Have a heart
Brandon Bair- 3-4 DT, 6'7", 272 lbs. Oregon.
Just a quick list, I'm sure I could find more with some research.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Herzlich
I thought he could be a good fit for our D. Plus he seems to have very high character and desire to play football.
Couple of guys
Noel Devine – have no idea what we’d do with another RB but this kid can fly
Mario Harvey – a short ILB from Marshall but he might the kind of run stuffer who could one day fit next to Washington pretty well.
Tom Keiser – another DE/OLB guy who would be worth a roll of the dice. Better pass rusher than moving around in space but that’s the be expected.
Ugo Chinasa – Another DE/OLB guy. Decent pass rusher, good athlete but struggles in space
Herzlich is a name I’m sure we’d all like to see come in. He’s got a great back story and I’m sure would be a great guy to have in the locker room.

Some serious beef
on those Oline candidates…I’d love Herzlich, and the DT seems like the perfect fit to be groomed into a DE
I also like Mario Harvey and Mark Herzlich at ILB.
MARC SCHIECHL (OLB) – small-school monster, beasted his pro day
IAN WILLIAMS (NT) – slipped through the cracks on Day 3; displays good leverage, 3 year starter
ANTHONY GRAY (NT) – a space-eating run-stopper; decent production in college and with 39 bench reps strength won’t be a problem
ZACH HURD (G) – saw him going in the 5th round; described as a borderline NFL starter, I’m guessing his ceiling isn’t projected to be very high but seems like a good pick-up
RAY DOMINGUEZ (G) – three-year starter at RT but lacking the quickness for the position in most NFL schemes; smart, tough and healthy, but will have to transition to OG
WILLIE SMITH (OT) – raw, athletic talent with the potential to be a Pro Bowler in 3 years
BYRON BELL (OT) – size and length; potential starter with the right coaching but character concerns
DARVIN ADAMS (WR) – reliable hands, decent combination of size and speed; strong work ethic
JOE LEFEGED (S) – strong special teamer with athletic upside to develop on defense
REID FORREST (P) – whether or not Graham is signed, why not?
SCOTT TOLZIEN (QB) – smart and accurate, Tolzien makes an ideal understudy
PAT DEVLIN (QB) – bit of an unrefined prospect as far as I can tell but with solid physical tools and good production
I've been hearing a lot about Scott Tolzien
And I’m surprised Pat Devlin wasn’t drafted. We should definitely look into them as options for the 3rd String QB.
Tolzien's got good quickness but not straight-line speed
He can move around in the pocket. He was around 72% on his throws last year but his arm strength is inadequate. I hear he’s a smart player with good football IQ. He’d be great as a pair of eyes on the sideline and, as a student-of-the-game, should be reliable enough to get his team through stretches as a game manager.
That’s what I hear, anyway. He sounds like what Hall was supposed to be. Devlin has better physical tools, coming out of school as a ‘Poor Man’s Joe Flacco.’ I think he’s more of a long-term project.
We can definitely upgrade that 3rd QB spot, and if Bulger is going to be our starter it’s tough to predict how long he’s going to hold up.
Funny!
I’ve played Madden 08 for a couple of years and one of the QBs I drafted a few seasons ago was named Pat Devlin. He was a Pro Bowler.
On another note, I wonder if John Skelton could convince the front office to bring his little bro TE Stephen out. He was plugging him a bit on Twitter. Another pass catcher.
Like the Cardinals? Revenge of the Birds is where to go.
Like Arizona Sports in general? SB Nation Arizona is where you'll get it all.
THANK YOU FOR THIS POST!!!!!
Finally, a post that can quiet the people who can’t stop complaining about not drafting o-line to rest. I kept stating that we will pick o-line up in FA! That not only means veterans, but also undrafted FA rookies. Of course there are other positions I’d like for us to pick up in rookie FA too. My small list so far Mark Herzlich (BC) and Derek Hall (Stanford)
Sorry folks, park's closed. Moose out front shoulda told ya.
Oh wow, so if we sign a couple UDFA offensive linemen then we're ok?
I know these guys make it big from time to time but 99% of all UDFA’s turn out to be practice squad tackling dummies.

oh wow...
And every drafted player ends up on the roster and a hall of famer? Lest you forget a recent hero of 99.9 % of all cardinals fans that went undradfted by the name of warner! But that’s right, we’ll be safe if they’re drafted.

I'm just saying the odds of a UDFA turning into a legit starter is significantly lower
than that of a player that’s drafted earlier in the draft. No team in the league builds their team around the guys who go undrafted. Sure you’ll get lucky and find a Warner or Antonio Gates or Preist Holmes or Tony Romo every once in a while but you can’t expect to solidify your offensive line by ignoring it in the draft and only adding UDFA’s.

and that's the truth of it
just need to look up the draft status of pro bowl players to see how those ratios work out.
yep, exactly
check out this stat that NFLN Network just threw up. It’s the percentage fo picks. by round, that end up becoming starters for the team that drafted them:
Round 1: 75%
Round 2: 50%
Round 3: 30%
Round 4: 25%
Round 5: 20%
Round 6 & 7: 9%
Now they didn’t list UDFA’s but if you look at the downward trend, you could probably guess the UDFA percentage might be around 5% or so.
