Should Early Doucet Be Let Go By The Cardinals?

So, with all the hopefuls we have grabbed in the draft in the Whisenhunt era.  Early Doucet is the one I can not decide if he needs to stay or should go.  He has shown some flashes on becoming the physical player that I crossed my fingers would replace Anquan Boldin seamlessly.  Then in the '09 post season, he posts 14-145 2 TD's, Now again those numbers and that play he showcased was what we had all grown used to, with Anquan Boldin himself, when he took over games.  Now with this last year, our entire offensive play was bad from play calling to execution. Moving forward after the draft this year, we did pick up Demarco Sampson. I have not done much reading in to Sampson, did he post big numbers in any competitions pre-draft, or was he one that on film surely does not seem to play like his numbers would suggest?  Either way ROTB do we give Early another season or cut him loose?

Keep

If there was something to judge from the 2010 season, it would not be the offense. Sure, Fitz still had a good year, but that’s Fitz. Doucet needs to prove himself with someone who can throw, so Keep.

He'll cost close to nothing.

And worst case scenario, is great depth to have behind Fitz – Breaston – Roberts. Definitely keep, even with if he’s injury prone.

He will not cost much to bring back

And he can at least provide some depth. Maybe he can be productive with a new QB that didn’t constantly try to injure the receivers like DA did.

Give him another chance this season, but if he keeps on getting injured next year it is probably time to let him go.

Whether we let him go or keep him

It doesn’t seem like this guy could ever stay healthy.

Keep

We use too many WR’s to cut him. He’s probably 4th-best but we’re not losing much by keeping him around.

Cut

Only is we bring Breaston back. Now to me all sign point to Breaston being gone so if we do let him walk then we need to keep him.

The problem with cutting him

Is that we have very little behind him. Komar and Williams did nothing all year. When Breaston goes out for a couple weeks with another knee injury, we’ll be down to two WR’s…

Agree

But I like Komar and I think he showed a little Quickness in the slot and I would not mind giving him a shot at the number 3 if Breaston got hurt.

I'm

very high on Stephen Williams.

I like him to but not as the slot guy.

by McCollum, Travis on May 25, 2011 10:19 PM MDT up reply actions

Breaston is a good slot guy.

Doucet can play the slot. Komar looks like a slot receiver too. Could spread Housler out to the slot as well. No need to put Williams there. I agree it doesn’t seem the right place for him.

I say he gets one more year under a new QB

Who doesn’t hang him out to dry, that said I think Roberts moved past him with Komar very close. He’s looking at a long road back into playing time if Breaston stays!

Trade

Packers fans would be happy to trade James Jones for Doucet straight up. Jones stays healthy but isn’t consistent catching the ball. He claims its cuz he doesn’t get enough targets. BUt he also makes big plays and if he gets regular targets his hands might improve. Similar players otherwise… Jones would probably be a better #2 WR than Breaston.

I would take James Jones over Doucet anyday

But I highly doubt the Packers FO would make a trade like that. They would ask for more.

by CanadianCard on May 25, 2011 10:43 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't think they would either actually.

Like I said, Most Packer fans would do it tho… Doucet might just need a change of scenery, and Jones seems to be falling out of favor w/ the Packers to some degree and is a FA/RFA depending on the CBA.

Doucet just needs to stay healthy.

Removing Derek Anderson from view should change the scenery sufficiently.

by hadrarius on May 26, 2011 5:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Only if he signs dirt cheap

Otherwise why keep a guy on the roster who is injured all the time? Why not let our UDFA’s try and make some noise. We got the SDSU kid, plus Komar and S. Williams. Two kids with heights and speed and one who is a slot guy. Fitz, Breaston and Roberts is fine with me.
Heck, maybe if we DON’T have a ton of talented WR’s we will run the ball more.

by Jesse Reynolds on May 26, 2011 2:16 AM MDT reply actions

He will be cheap

And that will save him. Doucet has recorded just 57 receptions in three seasons as the #3/4 receiver on a very pass happy team.

He burst onto the scene in the 09 playoffs with a couple of really good games, but outside of that he has onyl gone over 50 yards receiving in a game twice.

by khodder on May 26, 2011 6:59 PM MDT reply actions

Keep or trade

If we get a QB in here that can place the ball accuratley instead of way away from the body and way over the head, I think Early has a real chance to stay healthy and contribute. All of our WRs had to make dangerous catches all season because of sporadic QBs, and almost of them had some kind of injury at some point. If they decide to go the other direction, I think Doucet could warrant at least a 7th rounder, or could be used in a trade package for a QB.
