Shaun Hill, My Choice For QB If The 'Doomsday Scenario' Happened

There was a post not too long ago about who you would want for QB if the unthinkable happened and Kevin Kolb, Kyle Orton, Carson Palmer and Marc Bulger were not available. I think it's damn near impossible this would happen but there isn't much going on now in the NFL, or at my job (which is why im writing this).

Star-divide

A very good friend of mine and former roomate is a die-hard 9ers fan so I first saw Shaun Hill play when we lived together. I know he is a relative unknown, but he has shown he is a solid QB in this league. He reminds me of Orton, not a sexy name but a smart QB who wont kill you with turnovers. Over 3 seasons (2007-2009) with a very bad 49er team he played in 18 games while starting 16 of them. His record as a starter was 10-6 with a 23/11 Td/Int ratio. In 2008 he started 8 games and threw for 2046 yards and a 13/8 Td/Int. That translates to 4092 yards and a 26/16 Td/ Int over a 16 game season. Last year he played for a bad Lions team and started 10 games, going 3-7 but throwing for 2686 yards and 16/12 Td/Int. While the average NFL fan might not even know who Shaun Hill is, having watched just about every 9er game during his career, I wouldnt mind having him if no other option was available.

Shaun Hill career stats:

30 games played, 26 started

13-13 record with 2 bad teams

61.7 completion %     6176 yds     39Tds  23 Ints

His stats don't sound too bad

I didn’t watch him play, but I knew it was him and Drew Stanton who were starting games over in Detroit.

I wouldn’t mind him or Donovan McNabb.

Hill is about as good as Orton IMO.

Completes his share of passes and moves the ball. Hills biggest problem seems to be in the red zone. Good between the 20’s moving the ball but for some reason (even tho he has Megatron) he has trouble getting the ball in the end zone as often as he should. Again not a playoff QB IMO tho… Stanton is a guy to consider trading for too.

I'll disagree with him being cheaper than Orton...

Stafford is a baller, but has yet to show he could go even half a season without a serious injury. I just don’t see Detroit tossing all their eggs in one basket yet. If Matt makes it through this season OK, then I would imagine Hill will be dealt, but not until they feel comfortable about that shoulder.

Good point.

They don’t know yet if they have a quarterback or humpty dumpty.

by hadrarius on Jun 17, 2011 5:11 PM MDT up reply actions

I disagree also

I think Orton is definitely better than Hill

by Jesse Reynolds on Jun 17, 2011 1:17 PM MDT up reply actions

I would definitely rather have Orton too

I was just saying if he or any of the other big free agents werent available.

I'd be okay with it

Bring in a teacher??

Hill doesn’t look like a big downgrade from Kolb based on the stats listed. Another alternative if the four mentioned are out of the picture, would be to go with McNabb or Hasselbeck (if he is available).

I know that the team has said they have no interest in McNabb. Perhaps not tipping a fall-back plan??
Hasselbeck is still wondering about his future as of the 16th. He restates his desire to stick around, But, new GM and coaches have him on the bubble. Neither would be the QB of the future. But, they could fill the gap, and school our current, worst in division, QBs.

As a teacher

I’d take Hasselbeck over McNabb. McNabb has a certain reputation (rightly or wrongly I couldn’t say) about not being interested in working with or teaching his understudies. Hasselbeck would have to cram a lot of teaching in a short time frame though. I don’t think he would make it to the mid point of the season without going down to injury.

Id rather have Hill than Kolb

I still believe Kolb will CHOKE in AZ, We need a smart Vet to come in and groom Skelton. Ortons still my #1 man but Hill is a good money saving option over Kolb and Id much rather see that and use the extra cash to address the Oline!

Hill is an odd bird

He has a knack for being decent come gametime, but at least in SF (from what I have read), he was a notoriously terrible practice player, which is why he is never “the guy”. He is also a guy known for mental breakdowns in games (stepping on back endline of endzone while dropping back to pass for a safety). I wouldn’t mind him, but it would certainly be disappointing if he is the consolation prize.

Anyone have a ballpark figure for what signing him would cost?

I forgot all about him. Definitely better than Kolb IMO, and using the extra $ on O line makes great sense.

by Spikedriver on Jun 17, 2011 4:13 PM MDT reply actions

Still not sold on Kolb

I’d be willing to look at the deal if were along the lines of a 2nd or 2. I’d still prefer Orton though. And if I had to find a QB in a OMG moment, I give you…Abe Froman.

Seriously though, I did get to see some of Hill’s playing time and I saw the Lions compete while he was in there. What about Gradkowski?

It is DOOMSDAY after all.

No thanks on Gradkowski

His completion percentage is 53%. Might as well stick with Anderson as go for Gradkowski.

53% Ugh

I didn’t realize that when I suggested him. Withdrawn.

I wouldnt mind

Shaun Hill, he beat us when he had the talent (or lack thereof) in San Francisco, but then again San Fran is built to beat the Cardinals, and usually a couple other teams in a slump.

by Cardsfan928 on Jun 19, 2011 2:56 PM MDT reply actions

Is Kitna expected to be doing anything next year?

Though he’d get massacred behind our line, I suppose.

by Chg91 on Jun 27, 2011 8:01 PM MDT reply actions

ANY QB would...

Orton isn’t known of his movement ability. Palmer is pretty much a statue in the pocket, so is Bulger. Only Kolb has some semblance of athletic ability w/ his feet.

Orton-5.06 40, 4.54 shuttle, 7.39 cone drill
Kolb-4.85 40, 4.44 shuttle, 6.94 cone
