(DAY 1 CONT.) Open Thread: Trades, Signings, Rumors, and Other News (See Comments And Reactions To Moves As They Happen)

Since posts may take a little time to get up, come here for quick reactions and discussions as things happen

Continuing on from our previous thread, post any news on trades, signings, rumors, or any other interesting tidbits you find here. Kolb and Orton are still available with fewer and fewer teams interested in them. The Cards could get a steal. Find out about it here first! Enjoy, let's make it interesting, and let's go Cardinals!

Seattle pulling out of Kolb race & Orton/Hasselbeck still being available is crushing the Eagles leverage w/ the Cards. Who else wants him?

by Tyler Nickel on Jul 26, 2011 7:50 PM MDT up reply actions

You would think

That the Cards FO would have learned by now that you find a guy to help in all aspects of the game, not just a blocking *&^%$# TE. That’s like bringing Beanie into the game, we all knew that was a running play cause Wells sucked at picking up the blitz. Miller/Heap/Boss, all of them can catch and block.

Someone do me a favor and send me an e-mail when the Cards get serious.

Just a guy, because I was born that way.

by cdeveau on Jul 26, 2011 7:55 PM MDT up reply actions

All of those TEs

Are much more expensive though. I would think that Whisenhunt, being a former TE himself, knows what he wants in a TE.

Besides, he probably wants you to think that. If he brings in a blocking TE like King, you’d imagine they’re running right? The defense lines up for a run play and BAM you hit em with a play action play.

by Tyler Nickel on Jul 26, 2011 7:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Sure they cost $

That’s part of being aggressive. And if they are just bringing him into the game as a smoke screen to fool a D, then Dray works just as well. For my aggressive $, which I wasn’t going to spend on a TE to begin with as the OL and QB spot needs as much aggressive $ as can be had, I would have preferred someone who isn’t a one trick pony.

Just a guy, because I was born that way.

From Rotoworld
NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora suggested on Total Access Tuesday night that Kevin Kolb may end up back with the Eagles because his market has softened over the pasts 48 hours.
The Eagles lost an enormous amount of leverage when Seattle decided to settle on Tarvaris Jackson as its likely new starter. Arizona’s trade proposal may have since dropped. Per La Canfora, it isn’t out of the question that Kolb will now return as “insurance” for Michael Vick as the Eagles prepare to make a Super Bowl run. The Cardinals would likely then target Kyle Orton.

KOLB UPDATE

@timring3TV Tim Ring
SOURCE: Eagles tring to squeeze Cards for a 1st round pick plus DRC. Cardinals currently offering DRC and 2nd. Man, that’s a rough call.

by AlaskanCard on Jul 26, 2011 9:19 PM MDT reply actions

Either deal is stupid, but if the Eagles think they are getting 2 1st round pick value for Kolb they are bigger idiots than I thought.

by khodder on Jul 26, 2011 9:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Eagles are actually really smart

Cardinals are the dumb ones if they give in. Philly is waiting for all of these QBs to fall off the board and AZ to feel the pressure

by Tyler Nickel on Jul 26, 2011 9:21 PM MDT up reply actions

But in the same process they are killing off all their other options. you have demand right now from one team for Kolb, and the supply of QB’s for the Cards is still open with Hass, Kolb and Orton still around.

Supply and Demand would dictate the price of the commodity (QB) would drop because of the low demand.

by khodder on Jul 26, 2011 9:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Look I am not a Kolb “Beleiver” as evidence by the “Kolb Ugly Truth” post. But I still think the Cards should offer and sit at 2 2nds, and then wait for the Eagles to accept, or after 2-3 days move to Orton, while always keeping in contact with Denver

by khodder on Jul 26, 2011 9:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes, yes they do. Camps do not open until what Friday. They can wait until them to get a deal done.

by khodder on Jul 26, 2011 9:24 PM MDT up reply actions

by Drullin'OverDaCards on Jul 26, 2011 9:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Kolb Price is not going anywhere, right now it is clear there is only one team in the market for the product.

Try selling a can of Coke for $3 when you have only one possible buyer and cans of Pepsi avaiable for $2, and some Budget Brand Cola for $1.

by khodder on Jul 26, 2011 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

Then don’t sell, Cards move elsewhere.

We are truly going to see if the Eagles want to keep Kolb around for another year after they have made it clear all offseason he was going elsewhere.

BTW My point was this, you are never going to sell a slightly “superior Product” for a larger price, if there is only one customer and there are some “inferior” products available for a lessor price. Either the “Superior Product” drops in price to match the lower price, or the consumer moves on.

And this deal is going to take time, and for whatever QB comes it, it is not going to be some miracle fix that turns a team with an inept offense and the 30ths ranked defense into a 10-6 division winner overnight,

The opinion from the Rotoworld people
According to Tim Ring of 3TV News in Phoenix, the Eagles are trying to “squeeze” the Cardinals for a first-round pick and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in exchange for Kevin Kolb.
It’s an absurd return for an unproven QB with several question marks. We find it borderline unfathomable for Arizona to meet that asking price when they could get Kyle Orton for a fraction of that cost. The Cardinals need to call Philadelphia’s bluff, as the latter no longer has any leverage.

I spoke with coach Ken Whizenhunt who said the Cardinals would not overpay for Kevin Kolb, he made it clear the Cardinals would not give up a 1st or its equivalent for Kolb. Roger Cromartie being a first round pick only a few years ago would be considered a 1st round equivalent.

He went on to report our interest in Orton, it was on the mike missanelli show, ill look to see if i can find it.

After the draft but before a new union is certified there is a bit of a legal black hole – he could have filed his own antitrust suit alleging he should be able to sign a contract with the highest bidder, the whole draft violated anti-trust law etc. and almost surely would have won. “Breaking: Sources: #Redskins and Barry Cofield agree to terms, pending though an official signing on Friday.”

Great signing, help fill the gap that Haynesworth will leave behind when he’s cut. Cofield is a great player.

3-4 NT

I’m trying to think of who needs a NT that runs a 3-4… Anyone? As soon as you say it I’ll probably kick myself in the rear.

San Diego

is where Franklin probably ends up.

Bingo

SD would be a great fit, follow his buddy Spikes down there… Antonio Garay has played well, but he’s aging and I am not sure he can keep it up.

On Kolb trade
timring3TV Tim Ring
Once again, I’m told Howie Roseman and Joe Banner are trying to “win the deal” rather than make a fair deal, shake hands and say good luck.

Agreed,

no on Kolb, I’ll take my chances without him, it’s not like we’re going to finish 14-2 with him.

Bet that all of the Philly fans are getting pissed off right now

Good,

Free Agent QB’s never take a team to the next step, they give them a boost, but fizzle out.

by Cardsfan928 on Jul 26, 2011 10:41 PM MDT reply actions

Scratch that,

Kolb is not a free agent, my bad.

Anyone think

Franklin leaving is going to hurt Willis’ performance quite a bit? Not that he won’t still be a tackling machine

Without question.. yes.

From Sando
The Arizona Cardinals appear in strong position as they consider options at quarterback. The way they sat back and projected patience Tuesday is looking like a smart approach. I can’t think of another team likely to trade for Philadelphia’s Kevin Kolb. The Cardinals should be in no rush. Teams cannot sign players or visit with free agents from other teams until Friday. Kolb could not practice with them until Aug. 4 if Arizona acquired him and signed him to a new contract. Even if Kolb is the Cardinals’ top choice, the team might be wise to play up interest in other candidates. Why not seek permission to meet with Kyle Orton? Why not bring in Matt Hasselbeck? There’s no reason for Arizona to overpay for Kolb unless another team emerges as a serious suitor.

by AlaskanCard on Jul 26, 2011 10:57 PM MDT reply actions

I have a feeling

We’re going to get Orton, Considering Arizona wanted Bulger last season and Orton is better than Bulger it just makes sense. Sure Kolb has upside but so does Skelton! Win games now with Orton and continue grooming Skelton for later, this was the plan last year except it was suppose to be Bulger.

by Patrick_Peterson on Jul 26, 2011 11:01 PM MDT reply actions

Although...

I wouldn’t mind Kolb for the right price, but it’s nice to have options to avoid deals like DRC and a first.

Anybody know anything about this?

@Campbell93 Calais Campbell: And #cardsnation #birdgang please welcome one of your newest members: my lil Bro @JaredQuay.

Sounds like we might have signed Calais’ brother Jared, a Safety (mainly a special teamer) out of University of Miami. From what I’ve found, coming out of high school he was actually expected to be the most talented of all the Campbell brothers. Couldn’t hurt to keep him on the practice squad and/or depth for special teams coverage, if for no other reason than to make Calais happy so that he’ll be reasonable when it comes to new contract demands?

Lumpkin

I know Ricky Lumpkin from his Kenwood High School days back in TN. He’s a really good kid… Class 4a TN Mr. Football lineman of the year in 2005. Hope he makes the team…

Scratch Hasselbeck off the QB list

According to Schefter, Titans have agreed to sign Hasselbeck to a 3-year deal. Our options are dwindling, down to Orton, Kolb, or even Vince Young. But I don’t believe VY is a starter.
