(DAY 7) Open Thread: Trades, Signings, Rumors, and Other News (See Comments And Reactions To Moves As They Happen)

The Arizona Cardinals Front Office continues to impress the league and their fans by being true to their word and being aggressive in the shortened Free Agency period.  After a slow start, and fan losing patience waiting for news of the QB decision while watching FA QB's being signed by teams around the league, the word was finally passed that Philadelphia Eagles QB Kevin Kolb had been traded to Arizona for a 2nd round pick in the 2012 draft and starting CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.  The die had been cast, some fans agreed with the move, others wanted Denver Broncos QB Kyle Orton. The big question that remained was simply, "You have a QB, now who's next and how are you going to fill all of the other holes on the team?"

The Arizona Cardinals responded by being more active in three days time than they traditionally are in full Free Agency periods.

We can handle a diva!

Does anyone not remember Anquan Boldin? He was not the same problem off the feild but he was very vocal on the field. All I know is that I am excited to go to a few games this year. drink some beer and eat some good barbeque, and see the cards win some games. I really wanna see them play the eagles. They remind me of the Miami Heat!

Hey now,

There also is not a WR in the league quite like Boldin

I would not classify him as a diva.

Still love the OL pickups...

Heap is a great safety valve for Kolb, who may not even need it if they really can seal Edwards to run opposite Fitz. Could be a very potent offense, provided this staff can get them all to gel in time for the season!

Plus I still really like the younger guys the Cards have on D. Especially PP and those LBs that haven’t hit their full potential yet.

Some players to think about

NT – Gabe Watson
CB – Trumaine McBride
DE – Kenny Iwebema
OT – Max Starks (Released by Pittsburgh)
WR – Braylon Edwards (UFA Jets)
*CB – Antonio Cromartie (Signed four-year deal worth $32 million with Jets)
OLB – Manny Lawson (UFA 49ers)
WR – Malcolm Floyd (UFA San Diego)
WR – Terrell Owens (UFA Cincinnati) – Never, ever, ever sign
WR – Legedu Naanee (UFA San Diego)

Thinking Iwebema may not be coming back.

Now that we have Nick Eason and Vonnie Holliday. Neither will be around long but Iwebema has had some injury issues.

by hadrarius on Aug 1, 2011 12:41 AM MDT up reply actions

Not wise, Remember Eason and Holliday are over 30

Iwebema is a young guy that can develop behind those guys… we need to develop the young guys

by ELrupps on Aug 1, 2011 10:16 AM MDT up reply actions

Carried seven DL last season

Holliday and Eason are both listed as DE. We have no NT/DT depth signed except for rookies (unless it has happened today and I’m not up to speed yet). Iwebema is not signed yet (again same disclaimer). I agree it’s not good to have no developing depth at the position but it doesn’t look like Iwebema is going to be brought back to be that guy.

by hadrarius on Aug 1, 2011 4:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Legedu Naanee

63 receptions in four years. The team is loaded up with receivers already. Can’t see them giving this guy a deal now. If they bring in another receiver it will be someone that is a definite #2 option, like Edwards.

by hadrarius on Aug 1, 2011 12:45 AM MDT up reply actions

True, I just liked what he did in his #2 role in SD last year. I think he might have some upside and would be cheap. Floyd is clearly the better of the two former SD WR’s on the market.

For the WR, it’s just got to be Edwards.

I think Edwards got into some altercation sunday night. About 1 A.M. arizona time. I hope I’m mistaken but apparently he hangs with some ghetto shady people. Edwards tweeted some weird message

"don’t fight. if you dont know how"

then he made another one…I forgot what exactly. They are both deleted. Here’s another tweet by someone claiming to hang with him at that time.

I don't know....

as much as people hate on the Jets, there aren’t really any “problem” people there. Rex seems to have the respect of his team and not really any legal issues there (if Plex stays clean). Not sure role models are the issue. This would be a quieter town than NY though, for sure. Not so much media, hype and pressure.

I read that SeaChickens ‘mutually agreed’ and released Tatupu. He would be a nice fit here you think? How much are Cards under the cap? What $$$ is left to spend. I would also rather see Floyd here than Edwards as #2 WR

Tatupu has played exclusively in a 4-3, we run a 3-4 here.

That, combined with the fact that he wouldn’t restructure to take less money from the seahawks, points to him not coming anywhere close to the desert..

Anyone besides me worried about the OL?

They sucked last year. Period. – Not really open to debate. They could not run block or pass protect.

We added Colledge and Womack (to me kinda eh; maybe a little physical improvement but new to the squad will offset the physical improvement) and a slew of rookies who will likely not play or if they play get beat a lot.

With the moves we made in other offensive positions, I think the OL is now a glaring weakspot on that side of the ball.

I’m not so sure we do. Having a 2nd WR to help take pressure off Fitz is important but Heap should do the same thing. If Roberts or Doucet are worth their salaries they should find a way to get open. Especially if we establish a run game.

Having a threat opposite Fitz leaves Heap against the lesser pass defenders. It benefits everyone. Maybe Roberts can do that, maybe not. I’m not confident a 2nd year receiver is going to be that guy.

Apparently, Clausen looked worse than he did last year

Anderson was “giving advice” too.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Phoenix Suns/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].

What advise?

Anderson: Okay throw to that guy.
Clausen: But he is on the defense.
Anderson: Doesn’t matter the objective is to throw to someone.
Clausen: Are you trying to sabatauge me?
Anderson: (quickly) NO! (laughs) no (turns around and thinks to himself) Yees.yees…all is going as planned….

Clausen, Anderson and Newton

Carolina would manage to assemble the only group of quarterbacks in the league that could make starting Newton look sensible…

Believe it or not...

I saw some suggestions that the Cardinals do nothing at quarterback this year except make John Skelton the starter.

by hadrarius on Aug 1, 2011 8:15 PM MDT up reply actions

That was definitely an undercurrent here

By the same people who wanted to enter the Luck lottery.

by tw3kr on Aug 1, 2011 8:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Whoa now,

I was one who was all for putting Skelton under center, and get better in other areas, but by no means was I part of the Luck lottery

Well hold on now,

Carolina is now being coached by Ron Rivera, he is no slouch in running a very effective defense (see San Diego the last few years), and he has the talent at all 3 levels to make some serious noise.

by Cardsfan928 on Aug 1, 2011 8:08 PM MDT reply actions

Look at their QB's though

The only way they can win is if Kolb throws 3 picks and our D can’t stop Carolina

by CardsDaBomb on Aug 1, 2011 8:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Well I mean

The only time he has thrown more than 2 picks was the Tennessee Game. I still like

Cardinals roster is at 93 currently.

Strange to think that a week ago there were half that many. Cuts are due already.

Nevermind on Edwards .... don't want a thug ass idiot on the team. I obviously can't say one way or the other if it's true but by twitter it seems true. I don't want an idiot fuck that gets into arguments and has his peeps cut up peeps.

That’s just ass and I don’t want those types on my Cards. Gimme Floyd or gimme someone else … Edwards and that dumb shit can stay the fuck away from my team. Fitz is the measure not some jack like Edwards.. that’s something I don’t think we as fans should or would want to take on.

Frpm the Article...

We’re told Edwards had nothing directly to do with the fight. In fact, the Birmingham police chief said his officers never had any interaction with the wide receiver

Maybe, maybe not.

I’m sure the FO would write up his contract with clauses for all that. They are smart, experienced, and no one wants Darnell barking up their tree…especially with NINO!

The Cards need a true 2 but not at this cost.

If you could choose 1 number 2 WR, hypothetically, who would you pick?

Since its like three of us here. No number ones! If you can help it.

Manningham
Maclin
Harvin

Just like those guys.
