(DAY 8 & 9) Open Thread: Trades, Signings, Rumors, and Other News (See Comments And Reactions To Moves As They Happen)

After a slow day yesterday, we are left to wonder what the FO has in store for the Cards in the next few days.  With all the draft picks under contract, the only real news yesterday was that Ben Patrick went to the Giants.  Will today be the day that Edwards signs, or will we get Floyd instead?  Are the Cards happy with their OL, or will they be going after some Tackles?

Star-divide

Key arrivals: Ex-Panthers UFA CB Richard Marshall, July 30; Ex-Eagles UFA LB Stewart Bradley, July 29; Traded for ex-Eagles QB Kevin Kolb, July 28 (Eagles get CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and second-round pick; Kolb agrees to new five-year contract worth $63 million with more than $20 million guaranteed); Ex-Packers UFA OG Daryn Colledge, July 29; Ex-Panthers UFA TE Jeff King, July 29; Ex-Ravens UFA TE Todd Heap, July 31, Ex-Eagle UFA ILB Stewart Bradley, July 29; Ex-Brown UFA OG Floyd Womack, July 30; Ex-Steeler UFA DE Nick Eason, July 30; Ex-Brown WR Chansi Stuckey, July 29; Traded for Ex-Redskin DE Vonnie Holliday, July 31 (Traded Tim Hightower and received Holliday and 6th round conditional draft pick).

Departures: Traded CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to Eagles, July 28 (Cardinals get QB Kevin Kolb); UFA WR Steve Breaston, July 29 (to Chiefs); Cut QB Derek Anderson, LB Gerald Hayes, July 28; Traded RFA RB Tim Hightower to Redskins, July 31 (Cardinals get DE Vonnie Holliday and a 6th round conditional draft pick), DE Alan Branch July 29 (to Seahawks), .

Key re-signings: UFA FB Reagan Maui'a, July 29; UFA TE Stephen Spach, July 29; UFA C Lyle Sendlein, July 29; UFA P Ben Graham, July 29; UFA S Hamza Abdullah, July 29; UFA CB Michael Adams, July 29; UFA OT D'Anthony Batiste, July 29; UFA C Ben Claxton, July 29; RFA WR Early Doucet, July 29; RFA OT Brandon Keith, July 29; UFA OG Deuce Lutui, July 31 (one year).

Unsigned players: FB Nehemiah Broughton (UFA), DT Keilen Dykes (UFA), OG Alan Faneca (UFA-retired), DE Kenny Iwebema (UFA), CB Trumaine McBride (RFA), TE Ben Patrick (UFA), NT Bryan Robinson (UFA), S Matt Ware (UFA), DT Gabe Watson (UFA), RB Jason Wright (UFA-retired).

Doesn’t sound like backup NT is a priority

Only dan williams is there at NT right now..

How is a back up not a priority? Unless they know something we don’t about one of the UDFA’s we’ve signed..

Ok thanks.

Steve Smith would be a solid pick also.
Schefter twitted earlier that he felt the Cards already had the talent at WR on the roster in Doucet, etc, and wouldn’t REALLY need to add anyone. I’m not sold on that approach yet.

St Louis worries me a little this year.

McDaniels is a helluva offensive coordinator and play caller. They’ll be a strong team this season.

Great question

Washington has bad luck with RB injuries so he could see some time.

I’m going to go with Wells if he stays healthy, and Williams. I wouldn’t be surprised if they both end up about equal in yardage.

Even though we got Todd Heap

I’d been hoping that we’d get Zack Miller. Someone told me he’d been Franchise Tagged by the Raiders, and that’s why we couldn’t.

I guess the plan is to use Todd Heap to mentor Robert Housler, and make him the TE of the future.

Possible Trade for Asante Samuel

If the Cardinals sign Braylon Edwards to a reasonable deal, does anybody like the possibility of trading one of our four young good WR prospects? Doucet, Williams, Roberts and Komar would help the eagles and we could give up a late round pick(5th or 6th round) for Asante. I would trade Komar cause he’s probably on the bottom list but trading williams or roberts still sound good to me.

“The Steelers selected Florida tackle Marcus Gilbert(notes) in the second round, and there’s a possibility that Gilbert will see serious time in his rookie year. Or, the Steelers might bring Starks back at a lower cap number. Starks is also trying to drum up interest from the Arizona Cardinals, where he’d be familiar with former Steelers line coach and current Cards assistant head coach Russ Grimm.”

Max Starks eats his way out of Pittsburgh

Postby kubygator " Wed Jul 27, 2011 10:42 pm
Max Starks – T – Steelers Steelers informed LT Max Starks of his impending release.
The move saves $5.14 million in salary. The Steelers are picking up their pursuit of free agent RT Willie Colon, but the Starks move doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with that. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette beat writer Ed Bouchette recently suggested Starks might be pushing 400 pounds after an apparent offseason on the couch recovering from neck surgery. The Steelers might bring Starks back later at a reduced rate — perhaps — but he isn’t going to help anyone until he gets in shape. He’s cost himself a ton of money

Guess he’s one guy that needs year-long monitoring. Pouncey and Marcus Gilbert still representing on the OL though

wow is that their first "big" move?

Rogers is a good player, but is he an upgrade from Clements? It seems like they really have their sites set on losing, but it seems unfathomable that a pro sports franchise would do that… especially when they are forced to spend their available cap money and could’ve signed players that would make them better not only this year, but in the future as well… SO therefore, does anyone think that FAs are simply not interested in playing for SF this year knowing that they have a first year coach with a shortened preseason? I just don’t have an explanation for their lack of signings.

Apparently the 49ers have showed interest in Edwards?

Wonder if word of 49ers’ interest in Braylon Edwards will spur Cardinals to sweeten offer? http://bit.ly/pX3WzY

A shame

I missed him as a player, and only knew him from the Police Academy films. May he rest well.

Just a guy, because I was born that way.

Thats not good.

I have a feeling we might be seeing more of Kolb in the preseason than you expect for the starting QB.

by CARDstucknVA on Aug 3, 2011 5:00 PM MDT reply actions

I like Edwards more as a player, but the off the field stuff concerns me.

So if we comes here, I hope it goes well.

And if we goes to the 49ers, I hope he stabs Alex Smith with a fork.

never said what it was. Made it all sound mysterious. Said Eagles were not letting on about how bad it was. Let myself become a victim of media hyperbole I guess.

sounds like the Steelers need a new rep...

He went chest to chest with the reporter? Players need to hold themselves at a higher stanbdard than that… Especially when the player gets agitated from a question and is on his own tangent about the commissioner. The Steelers for good reason were the most penalized team last year. Do I think the process needs work? yes, but I don’t think it should hold up the CBA. Can they not simply make an addendum that changes these rules? The CBA holdup will hurt teams. If there are 30 other teams that feel the same way, then so be it, but it sounds like the Steelers stand alone on that topic.

I'm not surprised

Braylon Edwards is talented...

But my god is he dumb. If the reports are true, he started the fight and is getting charged with assault. Thats a great thing to do while on probation, and having just revamped his image after the dui last year, all while awaiting a new contract. Malcolm Floyd anyone?

by Gildo on Aug 4, 2011 11:01 AM MDT reply actions

What are the Jets doing at WR? They let Braylon Edwards(off field issues sure) , Jerricho Cotchery & Brad Smith go and sign 34 year old Plaxico Burress who hasn’t played in 2 years and 37 year old Derrick Mason. These don’t seem to be Upgrades.

by CardsDaBomb on Aug 4, 2011 11:34 AM MDT reply actions

Cards were unanimous

in their vote for the CBA… It would be great if every team were with the exception of the Steelers. Just send thgema a message that they are on their own with that fight and should probably start playing in a way that would lead them to not have to worry about fines in the first place.

by Gildo on Aug 4, 2011 1:46 PM MDT reply actions

It passed!

Now we can have 10 years of uninterrupted football.

by CARDstucknVA on Aug 4, 2011 2:47 PM MDT reply actions

Salary Cap Availability by team

The Bucs have the most, but the Cards have 14 million left to spend, which I assume is enough to extend Larry and get a Malcolm Floyd… That figure is bound to go up even more as they continue to release players and such…

by Gildo on Aug 4, 2011 3:46 PM MDT reply actions

With the noise Edwards is making

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Floyd in a Cards uniform.

Just a guy, because I was born that way.

by cdeveau on Aug 4, 2011 3:50 PM MDT up reply actions

or cotchery

though who knows if he is even an upgrade from Stuckey… I feel Floyd would be, Edwards definitely would be, but he is not really making himself seem reliable enough to sign. Maybe his recent transgressions will cause his stock to fall low enough to where he’ll take a one-year deal with low guarantee (but with incentives could be worth a decent sum)… That would make it low risk.

If we don't get Floyd, I like the idea of Steve Smith.

He is looking for a 1-year deal and can come rather cheap. About the injury issue, I’ve heard conflicting reports. One is he would open the season on PUP and miss 6 weeks. The other I’ve heard is he’s looking at 2-4 weeks. I wouldn’t mind the idea of having Roberts and Doucet/Williams/Stuckey fill the 2/3/4 WR slots for the first few weeks.

by Jesse Reynolds on Aug 4, 2011 5:44 PM MDT reply actions

uhhh, I doubt he took 2 million less to play with the 9ers...

can that be true? i never heard about an official offer. They obviously had to have pulled the offer or the 9ers offer had more guaranteed money…

by Gildo on Aug 4, 2011 6:27 PM MDT up reply actions

actually...

it sounds like he took a 1 million guarantee and only gets the 3.5 if he catches 90 passes AND makes the probowl. I heard this on AM 620 this morning. They said they haven’t verified the info, but that they trust the source. My bet is that he tried to get greedy and when he didn’t take the offer and went to the 9ers, the Cards simply pulled their offer and said good riddance. His agent should get a kick in the nuts for that one.

by Gildo on Aug 5, 2011 10:41 AM MDT up reply actions

Probably for the best that Edwards went to 9ers.

I just have a feeling he’s going to self-implode this year.
Floyd or Smith. Let’s go Cards…make it happen.

So who covers Edwards?

Peterson? Toler? If Crabtree’s out, its gotta be Peterson, right? Should’ve been a Cardinal, dude….
