(DAY 8 & 9) Open Thread: Trades, Signings, Rumors, and Other News (See Comments And Reactions To Moves As They Happen)
After a slow day yesterday, we are left to wonder what the FO has in store for the Cards in the next few days. With all the draft picks under contract, the only real news yesterday was that Ben Patrick went to the Giants. Will today be the day that Edwards signs, or will we get Floyd instead? Are the Cards happy with their OL, or will they be going after some Tackles?
Key arrivals: Ex-Panthers UFA CB Richard Marshall, July 30; Ex-Eagles UFA LB Stewart Bradley, July 29; Traded for ex-Eagles QB Kevin Kolb, July 28 (Eagles get CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and second-round pick; Kolb agrees to new five-year contract worth $63 million with more than $20 million guaranteed); Ex-Packers UFA OG Daryn Colledge, July 29; Ex-Panthers UFA TE Jeff King, July 29; Ex-Ravens UFA TE Todd Heap, July 31, Ex-Eagle UFA ILB Stewart Bradley, July 29; Ex-Brown UFA OG Floyd Womack, July 30; Ex-Steeler UFA DE Nick Eason, July 30; Ex-Brown WR Chansi Stuckey, July 29; Traded for Ex-Redskin DE Vonnie Holliday, July 31 (Traded Tim Hightower and received Holliday and 6th round conditional draft pick).
Departures: Traded CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to Eagles, July 28 (Cardinals get QB Kevin Kolb); UFA WR Steve Breaston, July 29 (to Chiefs); Cut QB Derek Anderson, LB Gerald Hayes, July 28; Traded RFA RB Tim Hightower to Redskins, July 31 (Cardinals get DE Vonnie Holliday and a 6th round conditional draft pick), DE Alan Branch July 29 (to Seahawks), .
Key re-signings: UFA FB Reagan Maui'a, July 29; UFA TE Stephen Spach, July 29; UFA C Lyle Sendlein, July 29; UFA P Ben Graham, July 29; UFA S Hamza Abdullah, July 29; UFA CB Michael Adams, July 29; UFA OT D'Anthony Batiste, July 29; UFA C Ben Claxton, July 29; RFA WR Early Doucet, July 29; RFA OT Brandon Keith, July 29; UFA OG Deuce Lutui, July 31 (one year).
Unsigned players: FB Nehemiah Broughton (UFA), DT Keilen Dykes (UFA), OG Alan Faneca (UFA-retired), DE Kenny Iwebema (UFA), CB Trumaine McBride (RFA), TE Ben Patrick (UFA), NT Bryan Robinson (UFA), S Matt Ware (UFA), DT Gabe Watson (UFA), RB Jason Wright (UFA-retired).

How is a back up not a priority? Unless they know something we don’t about one of the UDFA’s we’ve signed..

Still waiting some word on a WR or OL.
Maybe today!
Un related to AZ but....
Of the top 3 holdouts who deserves the money the most? D-Jax, Mathis, or CJ2K?
Not sold on D-Jax
I think Maclin is a much better overall Receiver.
I would go with CJ2K. Guy is a beast with little help.
Braylon Edwards still having off the field issues...
…softening on bringing this guy in. Is Malcolm Floyd still out there at WR?
He is. Cardinals are looking at Braylon and Giants Steve Smith. I heard a rumor about Floyd. Not sure though
Ok thanks.
Steve Smith would be a solid pick also.
Schefter twitted earlier that he felt the Cards already had the talent at WR on the roster in Doucet, etc, and wouldn’t REALLY need to add anyone. I’m not sold on that approach yet.

This year I’m paying much closer attention to the Cardinals; they’re really looking much more like (at the least) a playoff contender this year than the Donkeys.
lmao!
why would call ur favorite team the “Donkeys”
by CanadianCard on Aug 2, 2011 11:56 PM MDT up reply actions
St Louis worries me a little this year.
McDaniels is a helluva offensive coordinator and play caller. They’ll be a strong team this season.
Great question
Washington has bad luck with RB injuries so he could see some time.
I’m going to go with Wells if he stays healthy, and Williams. I wouldn’t be surprised if they both end up about equal in yardage.

What about Laron Mcclain?
If the cards are looking to run more this year and improve, how about signing Heaps former teamate in Mcclain to improve the run game and mentor are rookie FB? I know this is just somethinng I’d like but depending on the cash wed give him it makes since!

Even though we got Todd Heap
I’d been hoping that we’d get Zack Miller. Someone told me he’d been Franchise Tagged by the Raiders, and that’s why we couldn’t.
I guess the plan is to use Todd Heap to mentor Robert Housler, and make him the TE of the future.
Kevin Kolb's not practicing yet
So yeah. And it’s probably just because they’ve been locked out for the last four months, and haven’t practiced in-between as much as they should’ve.
Possible Trade for Asante Samuel
If the Cardinals sign Braylon Edwards to a reasonable deal, does anybody like the possibility of trading one of our four young good WR prospects? Doucet, Williams, Roberts and Komar would help the eagles and we could give up a late round pick(5th or 6th round) for Asante. I would trade Komar cause he’s probably on the bottom list but trading williams or roberts still sound good to me.
So Williams and a 6th round pick?
So, we the fans, want to petition the cardinals to trade Stephen Williams WR and a 6th round pick to the Eagles for Asante Samuel?
….Agreed?
Cause a rookie and a backup player aren't starters
Peterson may become one mid season but the only starter we have on the team is greg toler.

i know a lot of the signings are undisclosed,
but is it possible to find this out somewhere? I assume many of the undisclosed signings are for the vet minimum, but who knows…
Rookie receivers are famous for flashing and disappearing
Heck, we had two of those guys last year. It’s good that he’s showing up, though. Solid investment for the future, perhaps.

now everyone knows the plan. come on Joe, you’re better than that. :)jk I like hearing that they are using two TE sets… I don’t recall that happening at all last year…
Cardinals are reportedly 23 Million under cap.
So we have enough to throw 10 million dollars more at Fitz and bring his contract somewhere between 17 and 19 mil per season.

Do you know how to submit a fanpost? If so, would you post my info above?
If you are using IE it wont work, I tried to make this via IE, and had to switch to Firefox
also I got an error when I tried to join.
Go to the top right corner of the screen
It should say something like “New Fanpost”.
You can post it there.
Giants waived OL Herman Johnson
The reason given was, “Left squad.” The 6’7/360 Johnson has been let go twice in the past week. It’s good bet that he arrived to camp out of shape. Aug 2, 8:57 PM
Former Cardinal
Could claim him off waivers, has played OG and OT. If anyone can whip him into shape, Lott can.
OG with Cards
We put him on the practice squad and the Bears signed him off of our practice squad. The Bears then moved him to Tackle as a backup.
He might be familiar enough with the Cards offense to be a backup here if can get in shape.
9'ers?
After a few days of reflection, former Bears C Olin Kreutz isn’t going to retire. He wants to play for the right team.
It's Pantology who is doing it.

Good,
Edwards will be one heck of a number two, It’s coming to terms without being able to say we have the best WR duo in the NFL that I miss. Even when Green was here, no matter how bad we were, I could still defend the Cardinals as having the best WR duo in any debate.
Hearing that the clock is ticking for the Ravens to sign WR Malcom Floyd. Other suitors include Vikings, Cardinals, Panthers, Raiders.
So, Floyd or Edwards?

Id say Edwards. I like what Floyd has to offer i'm just being a lil biased cause Im more of an Edwards fan. Minus his off field issues

Max Starks – T – Steelers Steelers informed LT Max Starks of his impending release.
The move saves $5.14 million in salary. The Steelers are picking up their pursuit of free agent RT Willie Colon, but the Starks move doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with that. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette beat writer Ed Bouchette recently suggested Starks might be pushing 400 pounds after an apparent offseason on the couch recovering from neck surgery. The Steelers might bring Starks back later at a reduced rate — perhaps — but he isn’t going to help anyone until he gets in shape. He’s cost himself a ton of money

wow is that their first "big" move?
Rogers is a good player, but is he an upgrade from Clements? It seems like they really have their sites set on losing, but it seems unfathomable that a pro sports franchise would do that… especially when they are forced to spend their available cap money and could’ve signed players that would make them better not only this year, but in the future as well… SO therefore, does anyone think that FAs are simply not interested in playing for SF this year knowing that they have a first year coach with a shortened preseason? I just don’t have an explanation for their lack of signings.
Not a 49ers fan either

sounds like the Steelers need a new rep...
He went chest to chest with the reporter? Players need to hold themselves at a higher stanbdard than that… Especially when the player gets agitated from a question and is on his own tangent about the commissioner. The Steelers for good reason were the most penalized team last year. Do I think the process needs work? yes, but I don’t think it should hold up the CBA. Can they not simply make an addendum that changes these rules? The CBA holdup will hurt teams. If there are 30 other teams that feel the same way, then so be it, but it sounds like the Steelers stand alone on that topic.
Also are 32 of 32 teams needed to ratify it?
Im not too sure how that goes.
Yeah but this is dealing with player discipline and most players are for players so... the NFL is going to have to let go a bit.

So I just found out steelers fans don't know a decade. He was saying the steelers are the best team this decade. He keeps saying a decade is 11 years.
Who says a decade is 11 yrs.? HAHA. Really? The Stealers are just that stealers as the NFL allows them to do what they do without consequence.

"The Arizona Cardinals, they have been as active as the Eagles. Philadelphia added a lot of high profile names but I’m not sure any team in the NFL, in fact I’m sure no team in the NFL improved themselves more than the Arizona Cardinals. They needed to upgrade tight end, quarterback, offensive line and they did. I love what I see out of Arizona. I’ve got Arizona winning the division and that’s exciting." ~ Colin Cowherd ESPN Radio (08-03-11) ~

Braylon Edwards is talented...
But my god is he dumb. If the reports are true, he started the fight and is getting charged with assault. Thats a great thing to do while on probation, and having just revamped his image after the dui last year, all while awaiting a new contract. Malcolm Floyd anyone?
Hearing no changes to Commish powers on off-field discipline in new CBA, some changes with on-field discipline and no HGH testing ...
Goodell just likes punishing people
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Phoenix Suns/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].
What are the Jets doing at WR? They let Braylon Edwards(off field issues sure) , Jerricho Cotchery & Brad Smith go and sign 34 year old Plaxico Burress who hasn’t played in 2 years and 37 year old Derrick Mason. These don’t seem to be Upgrades.
braylon edwards will probably be in jail anyways...
so i would call them upgrades.
Cards were unanimous
in their vote for the CBA… It would be great if every team were with the exception of the Steelers. Just send thgema a message that they are on their own with that fight and should probably start playing in a way that would lead them to not have to worry about fines in the first place.
It passed!
Now we can have 10 years of uninterrupted football.
I honestly believe the FO is quietly working on bringing in another WR.
I could be way off though.

Salary Cap Availability by team
The Bucs have the most, but the Cards have 14 million left to spend, which I assume is enough to extend Larry and get a Malcolm Floyd… That figure is bound to go up even more as they continue to release players and such…
With the noise Edwards is making
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Floyd in a Cards uniform.
Just a guy, because I was born that way.
or cotchery
though who knows if he is even an upgrade from Stuckey… I feel Floyd would be, Edwards definitely would be, but he is not really making himself seem reliable enough to sign. Maybe his recent transgressions will cause his stock to fall low enough to where he’ll take a one-year deal with low guarantee (but with incentives could be worth a decent sum)… That would make it low risk.
Anyone know where I can watch the practice? They said it was NFL Network but is there a way that I can watch it online?
Nope -- been looking for a way myself. Sucks being a Cards fan on the east coast.

Kolb rolls left under pressure, throws to Fitz for leaping sideline grab in 11-on-11. The two might have a future methinks.

Ryan Williams changes direction without a hitch. Nice run. Competitive RB situation in Arizona.
If we don't get Floyd, I like the idea of Steve Smith.
He is looking for a 1-year deal and can come rather cheap. About the injury issue, I’ve heard conflicting reports. One is he would open the season on PUP and miss 6 weeks. The other I’ve heard is he’s looking at 2-4 weeks. I wouldn’t mind the idea of having Roberts and Doucet/Williams/Stuckey fill the 2/3/4 WR slots for the first few weeks.

Stupid Edwards. We offered him a 1 year 5.5 million dollar contract on a potential winning team. He took a 1 year 3.5 mil deal with a team that won't make playoffs
uhhh, I doubt he took 2 million less to play with the 9ers...
can that be true? i never heard about an official offer. They obviously had to have pulled the offer or the 9ers offer had more guaranteed money…
actually...
it sounds like he took a 1 million guarantee and only gets the 3.5 if he catches 90 passes AND makes the probowl. I heard this on AM 620 this morning. They said they haven’t verified the info, but that they trust the source. My bet is that he tried to get greedy and when he didn’t take the offer and went to the 9ers, the Cards simply pulled their offer and said good riddance. His agent should get a kick in the nuts for that one.
Gotta get Floyd now
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Phoenix Suns/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].
Probably for the best that Edwards went to 9ers.
I just have a feeling he’s going to self-implode this year.
Floyd or Smith. Let’s go Cards…make it happen.
So who covers Edwards?
Peterson? Toler? If Crabtree’s out, its gotta be Peterson, right? Should’ve been a Cardinal, dude….
"When life gives you lemons, I say f**k the lemons and bail."
and Braylon will be either suspended or in jail.
good signing.
