Ask Hogs Haven Your Redskins Questions
What up Cards fans. What a difference a year makes? Both teams looking on the up from a disastrous 2010. Feel free to ask any Skins questions and our community will answer thenm.
As for injuries, I'd be shocked if Laron Landry plays. Rex Grossman people are cautiously optimistic about. We don't need him to be what Kolb or Vick is. The Redskins defense will keep us in games, so essentially if Rex doesn't turn the ball over we should handle teams OK. Key stats in pre-season is that we dominated time of possession. Our offensive live is subpar, but the Redskins are loaded with passing options (Moss, Gaffney, Cooley, Fred Davis).....all these guys get open with ease.
Tim Hightower is not a fan of how he was used in Arizona claiming WRs didn't do their jobs blocking on passing plays. I'll be curious to see if the Cards bring that zone defense back because Santana Moss will tear that up.
I'm happy to see Daryl Washington will play. I want to see how the Redskins handle stud LBs given the Giants were basically starting 5th stringers due to major injuries.
As for Fitz, the only chance the Redskins have for stopping him is getting to Kolb. Expect an onslaught of blitz packages. We know Levi Brown well when he filled in for Left Tackle with us....umm, good luck with that. Rak might have a career day.

How long
until the Rex Cannon starts just going deep to show off the gun?
haha
Rex didn’t show off the cannon too much in week one, but he settled for a lot of 15-25 yard passes, and was really efficient in doing so. He did throw deep more last season, but I feel that could have been a carry over of the McNabb effect. I would expect there to be less than 5 balls that are thrown 30 or more yards (in the air).

Am I going to get harrassed by Redskins fans at the game Sunday when I show up in Cardinals gear?
And what do you think the Skins’ chances of winning the NFC East are this year?

I would hope not since you aren't an Eagles or Cowboys fan
unfortunately there are always some issues, but usually they are predicated due to some annoying cheer…for instance last year at the GB game every time the Packers got a 1st down, one A-hole in our section would stand up and say “And that is another Green Bay Packers…” to which every fan in about 3 sections would say ‘First Down’.

My profile picture is of me the last time the Cards played in DC in 2008
It was the day after my bachelor party, it was my birthday, and I was smashed beyond belief. If I recall correctly (which I probably don’t) the Redskins fans I encountered were all cool. It probably doesn’t hurt that the Cards lost, but whatever. I’m not the obnoxious, loud, A-hole visiting fan, but I am definitely gonig to cheer for my team.
On a related note, any Redskins fans willing to host a lowly Cardinals fan and his wife at your tailgate on Sunday?

Or for that matter
Any ROTBers going to the game and tailgating prior?

Lowly?
You mean tough. Washington fans can relate. Rooting for team with a bad past makes you tougher for not jumping ship and becoming a Packer/Steeler/Cowboy fan like most the people in the valley before Warner.

I think you are thinking of a different Levi Brown
Ours is a 1st round draft pick from 07. I think I know who you are talking about though (someone named Levi you guys had in 09?)
Do you think Kolb being with the Eagles last year and having experience in studying the Redskins defense will help him out?
And do you enjoy this KissingSuzyKolber.com Rex Grossman parodies?

yeah he's thinking of Levi Jones former Bengals busted 1st round pick
when you are a Skins fan bad offensive linemen run together so it is easy to get confused.
As for Kolb, I’m sure it helps some, but the real help will come from Vonnie Holliday who played and practiced in that defense every week. Now obviously the talent level of the Skins defense improved with Atogwe, Kerrigan, Bowen, Cofield, but Holliday does have some insight about the schemes.

How do you guys feel about Shanahan & Son?
As an outsider, it seems like they don’t handle difficult situations very well. The Mcnabb 2 minute drill, Albert Haynesworth, etc, I know Haynesworth is just a pos, but it seems like these coaches are not very up front with the players. Am I off base?

I think you are fairly right
I don’t know what they were thinking in year one trading for/extending McNabb, and then bringing in a bunch of old washed up players at WR, RB, DL etc. (the only one that worked was Holliday). Shanahan acted like the Skins were ready to contend and it cost us. As did his insistence of going to his system (ZBS and 3-4) regardless of how ill-prepared the Skins were for the change. Guys like Derrick Dockery, Andre Carter and Rocky McIntosh were very good prior to the change and down right awful in the new systems. instead of trying to maybe deal them and pick up a few extra mid round picks, we hung on to them and got nothing in return (except for collapsing any FA market for McIntosh so we could resign him cheaply).
This year though I think they got their act together as Mike seems to be listening to Kyle more. The game plan in preseason and week 1 was a lot cleaner, and Grossman is Kyle’s choice I believe at QB. Shanahan also made it a priority to bring in 3-4 personnel as both our top two picks and two largest FA signings were 3-4 front 7 players.

For the record
Kyle never wanted McNabb but Papa pulled the trigger anyway. It looks like they have the kinks worked out now.

Just wanted to say that Kerrigan is pretty much a beast in Madden 12
I like the intro assessment. Everyone here is happy to see Washington will be playing, too.
I expect a big game from Moss but I think we’re going to get a ton of pressure on Grossman and hopefully force him into some mistakes. We brought the heat on Newton last week but the pressure didn’t always get home — I think because they were really trying to maintain their lanes so that Newton couldn’t break out for a big run. They won’t have to worry about Grossman scrambling as much.
Hey guys
What would you say your strengths and weaknesses are?
From your one game I can say that your 3-4 defense is much improved.
The Giants team was fielding a lot of sub-par players, yet you only ran for 74 yards.
I am kind of wondering if you are expecting a Carolina-esk game against us, little run game, big passing game.
Your thoughts?
Strengths: DLine, LBs, and WRs
Weaknesses : Strong Safety and OLine
Redskins will try to run the ball. Our Oline is all journeymen in the middle (who were all backups last year at one point) so our running game will go as far as they’ll take us. Our passing game is very much about short routes and moving the chains…which makes sense since Grossman is not known for deep accuracy. We have a lot of excellent route runners on our team, which makes a difference, esp against rookie CBs. Expect a lot of misdirection plays that create space for Rex.

I see a low scoring affair
As we also are pretty set a Dline and have looked much better at LB than last season.
Our line is also suspect. This could could be a blitz fest.

I admit to not following the skins much so
Did Snyder give Mike S. total control over everything or does he still have some input?
Any info on how long Mike has to make the skins contenders as part of the deal?
by Drullin'OverDaCards on Sep 15, 2011 5:08 PM MDT reply actions
Shanahan basically has total control
I think Bruce Allen and some others advise, but Shanny decides who to target and they go get them.
Last year this was a fiasco as Shanahan I guess thought he could win with a veteran QB. But this year he has been a lot wiser in his decision making. It is a lot younger team, that has added a number of quality starters and contributors.

Supposedly in an interview....
Shanahan said he told Snyder that if he couldn’t be patient and hands off enough for the entirety of his contract….not to sign him. He signed him…so I am guessing…barring 2 more horrendous seasons…Shanny is safe for the length of his contract. But who the hell knows….we are not used to coaches making it past year 2…so we will see!
