Arizona Cardinals News: The Cuts Have Been Made

The Arizona Cardinals have started making their cuts to get down to the required 53 players on the roster. Arizona cut 25 different players today and moved two to the injured reserved list, bringing their total down to the limit. Here are the story updates from Seth Pollack at SB Nation Arizona.

Even more interesting than the players cut are some of the names that have been kept on the roster. Hit the jump to find out who is in and who is out.

Star-divide

Here's the list of the players that were cut (taken from SB Nation Arizona):

  • Cornerback FRED BENNETT
  • Safety JARED CAMPBELL
  • Center BEN CLAXTON
  • Quarterback BRODIE CROYLE
  • Linebacker WILL DAVIS
  • Punter BEN GRAHAM
  • Cornerback MARSHAY GREEN
  • Defensive end KENNY IWEBEMA
  • Tackle/Guard CLIFF LOUIS
  • Defensive tackle RICKY LUMPKIN
  • Fullback REAGAN MAUI'A
  • Defensive end JEREMY NAVARRE
  • Wide receiver AARON NICHOLS
  • Cornerback BRYANT NNABUIFE
  • Linebacker CYRIL OBIOZOR
  • Center KRIS O'DOWD
  • Guard TOM PESTOCK
  • Running back WILLIAM POWELL
  • Tight end STEPHEN SKELTON
  • Linebacker KENDALL SMITH
  • Linebacker PAGO TOGAFAU
  • Cornerback THAD TURNER
  • Safety MATT WARE
  • Wide receiver ISAIAH WILLIAMS
  • Tackle D.J. YOUNG
The biggest surprises to me are the both of the Ben's. Ben Claxton was expected to fill the backup center role behind Lyle Sendlein, but apparently the team feels comfortable with Rex Hadnot taking over that role if need be. Ben Graham has been a pretty good punter during his time with the Cardinals, so to see Dave Zastudil beat him out for the starting job is a bit of a shocker.

Other than that, there were no huge surprises. Floyd Womack and Sean Jeffcoat were the two players placed on injured reserve. I thought Matt Ware might have had a chance to make the roster, but apparently the team is feeling good about Adrian Wilson's return. Brodie Croyle really didn't get much of a chance to show that he could be a quarterback on this roster, so he was cut as well.

Here's one thing we need to be aware of before we jump to any conclusions about the players that were kept on the roster:

The team will be making more changes, there is now no doubt in my mind. A running back will likely be added and maybe even a secondary player or two.

Darren Urban pointed out something very interesting, which was that the team decided to keep five tight ends and nine linebackers on the roster for now. Obviously that will change as September 11th nears, but for now it just looks a bit strange. Quan Sturdivant could get a roster spot, along with veteran Reggie Walker

Now we will wait to see what players the team decides to put on the practice squad.

If you include Ronald Talley it could be 10 LB’s. One of the TE’s is out (Spach if the Dray injury heals quickly) for a RB. And it would not surprise me if we went after another Pass Rusher or a vet DB with some ability on ST’s.

Talley has looked good.

It doesn’t surprise me that he made it over Iwebema.

I have been thinking the same thing all preseason.

agree.

he even dropped in a punt last night at th 5 yard line.. doesn’t get much better than that…

by Gildo on Sep 2, 2011 4:03 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed.

From the outside this looks like a strange decision.

by Cryptopunk on Sep 2, 2011 4:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Graham is a one trick pony.

He does great on a short field. He can drop the ball virtually perfectly over and over right where you need it. But he is only good when punting from close to mid field. The hang time on his punts is too low. Our coverage does not have time to close on the returner before he catches the punt. Graham does not do well when punting for distance. I don’t know what to expect of his replacement but I’m not shocked that he was cut.

Nice trick though

I always liked him, but I dont have access to the stats that the coaching staff do. Maybe punting about a million times from your own 20 (like he did last season) doesnt make any punter look good in the long run.

Shocked at will David being cut...

The others make sense. Would I’ve liked to see Graham back but that’s the biz…

Davis never really got it together.

I am kind of surprised that both Davis and Obiozor were cut though. I thought one would squeek in.

by hadrarius on Sep 2, 2011 4:36 PM MDT up reply actions

I was leaning heavily toward Obiozor making it.

Kind of odd that they have four inside linebackers and only four outside linebackers. At least it seems odd to me. Thought it would be the other way around, but if they like those nine best I guess that’s how you roll.

Bradley and Washington

Are both pretty versatile, that cobld play a factor.

Cutting Ben Graham

Was a terrible decision. He was a Pro-Bowl caliber Punter.

by Skii on Sep 2, 2011 5:13 PM MDT reply actions

No way

is he a pro bowl caliber punter. He had a one great year as the punter but hasn’t been that good following that.

by kj197728 on Sep 2, 2011 5:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Two actually

Last year and the year before. Both years, a lot of people thought he was ripped off.

by Skii on Sep 2, 2011 8:55 PM MDT up reply actions

Last year he was not impressive.

The offense failed to move the ball. When left to punt from our own end of the field he did not manage to change field position in a positive way for the Cardinals. Too often the opponents found themselves with the ball near mid field after a Ben Graham punt, even if there was no return. Ben Graham does not get good hang time with his punts, in particular if they need to go a long distance, creating a situation where the coverage unit is not able to close on the returner before catching the ball thus allowing more return yardage.

Maui'a got cut?

Does this mean we’re going to be using our pounding TEs as FBs?

by SenSurround on Sep 2, 2011 5:53 PM MDT reply actions

No.

Anthony Sherman is the fullback.

by hadrarius on Sep 2, 2011 5:58 PM MDT up reply actions

graham

that cant be right. he kills it all the time. it will change.

by DORRITO on Sep 2, 2011 7:14 PM MDT reply actions

Wow. Surprised by Graham

BUT it was interesting to see Whisenhunt’s description of Zastudil. And wasn’t Fred Bennett just signed from the Bengals?

by RyanB17 on Sep 2, 2011 10:25 PM MDT reply actions

Bennett was just a roster body when Toler went down.

Yeah.

If the team needs to sign a linebacker mid season to replace someone he would be an obvious choice if available.
