What's In A Name...Part Tres?

Every season we experience an increase in supporters from the previous year. With success comes progress and it has shown with the sheer number of supporters that have reveeled themselves. Well this year is a little different.  After coming off a down year, and the worst in the Whiz era, our members have steadily increased. A true sign that we are not bandwagon fans. Three years ago we all came together with stories of how we fell in love with the Arizona Cardinals.  They ranged from following them since they were in St. Louis, to being a true homer, to following them from different parts of the globe.  I myself am from Florida.  I saw one poster from Alaska and of course we have our green blooded Irish lovers.  With so many new bloggers I'm again curious as to where all of your user names came from.  Some of them are a play on your names.  Some seem to make little sense like hevchv.

Here, in this third installment, I would like to continue the tradition. It has become customary before the first game of the season to welcome all of our new followers, as well as our faithful holdovers, by inviting them to share the stories behind their member names. So I will start. I go by hevchv. For those of you who don't know, its short for Heavy Chevy, a nickname I picked up while over in Iraq. Between lifting weights, and already being a solid guy, a lot of my buddies just started calling me Heavy Chevy and it stuck. I'm 5'10'' and 240. But what about the rest of you? What does your name mean?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

This is a wonderful thing!

Not much to my name…it’s my name. When I joined SB Nation AZ as a staff writer there, Seth (the regional manager) wanted all of the writers, because it is meant to be a little less ‘bloggy’, use our name. Some of us use a pseudonym, but I like my name.

I’m not a Junior (middle names are all different), but I am one of four generations of Jess Root — my grandfather, my dad, my oldest son and I all are Jess Root.

Thx, hevchv. Thanks for sticking around and thanks to all th3 new readers!

For the Birds, Part two...

Mostly an interested reader and fan plus an infrequent commenter, I’m from the Syracuse, NY area and grew up as a Jim Brown, of course, then Cleveland Browns fan. After the service years, I spent nearly 20 years in the Philadelphia area and converted to the Philadelphia Eagles. I ended up in AZ about five years ago and adopted the AZ Cardinals as “my” team. It seemed fitting that since the Cardinals were my second “bird” team that I adopt the moniker Birdman2.

I enjoy posts like this that help me get to know the fans behind the monikers. :-)

Nothing special here

I wish I had a story or saying behind my username like “Super Groovy Man”, but I don’t. I could say it stands for “Student of General Medicine” since I’m a third-year student in medical school, but it just my boring initials…not very inventive, I guess.

Born and raised in arizona...

Three years ago I moved to the great city of Portland, Oregon. My brother lives year aspsu along with a whole crew of cardinals fans we have found. We meet at a bar every game day and we feel at home again for that short time (except the sea chicken fans remind us we are in the north west). PDX is the portland airport code which is where that comes from. I invite any portlanders to join us at the Blitz in the pearl district on nw11th and Couch every arizona sporting event.

It's a quote from an autograph I got back in the day...

Growing up in St. Louis, I was a huge Cardinals football fan. In 1979, the Cards drafted Roy Green, who quickly became my favorite player. Prior to the 1981 season, some Cardinals were supposedly going to be at a local store near their training facility for some promotion or something, so I convinced my dad to drive me down there to have Roy sign my jersey. Well, by the time we got there – my dad was at work – the players were long gone.

My dad talked to the store owner to see if anything was left over. As the owner went back into the store, my dad acted excited and said that the manager had one autographed Roy Green poster left. Then the owner came out with a poster of Roy Green signed “Roy Green Was Here.”

I don’t know who had the more disgusted look on their face – 10 year old me or my dad. Years later my dad told me he had told the guy to run in the back and sign the poster for Roy Green, since Roy Green was here…he said he didn’t factor in that the store owner was a complete idiot.

I left St. Louis the same year as the Cardinals, and have maintained my devotion over the long years. I still have the poster btw…

Tucson born, lived in Mexico my whole life

I go back to AZ from time to time to visit family, though not as much as i’d like.
I grew up a Packer fan since that was my dad´s team. Some years ago i was watching a Cards vs Packers game. To my surprise I found out I was rooting for the Cards to win that one.

I realized I was a true Cards fan after following them that year. It was a 4-5 win season but I remember being soooo thrilled when they beat the vikings the last play of the season to leave them out of the playoffs. That clinched it for me.

I had just really started out following football for real. It felt cool to have a team I chose myself and not handed over by my dad. Last year I attended my first Cards game, the one against the Cowboys. Hope that´s the first of many. Man that was fun.

BTW ELrupps is basically mi nickname

I´m a Robert, but for some reason the nickname Ruppert has stuck with me since elementary. Nowadays some just call me Rupps, since that was taken i decided to go with “the rupps” which in spanish happens to be “el rupps”

Have lived in the Valley since 99.

I hate to admit it, but I still support the Broncos to a degree. I grew up in Co Springs and had a blast watching Elway lead the Brocos to multiple SB victories… I even got to go see an Elway versus Joe Montana matchup at Mile High Stadium for a Monday Night game. Pretty cool. I moved down here in 99 when I was in high school and never got to see the Broncos on tv, could only follow them on the internet. I was always a fan of ASU even when I was in Colorado (I really don’t know why), so when the Cards drafted Jake Plummer I became very interested in my new home team. Over time the Cards just took over as my team, and I will root for them over the Broncos. In a sense, the Cards are my team, the Broncos are my backup. I still make it up to Invesco for a game every year, Denver is a great place to watch football, though I do miss Mile High. I try to make it to most of the Cardinals home games but I couldn’t renew my tix this year because I am getting married and funding the wedding myself. I have 2 games lined up with a vendor (free tix, can’t complain) but other than that I am pretty much forced to watch from this year. Gildo is just a nickname, my last name is Gillam. I played hockey for 15 years and the name just kinda stuck when one of my teammates used it on a road trip.

Mine (cdeveau)

Is just my first name initial and my last name, nothing exciting there. I’ve travelled around enough that switching teams when you moved to a new state became a chore, so I learned to appreciate the game, rather than the teams playing it. As for being a Cards fan, I’ve been one since I transplanted to the valley around 86 or 87, and my roots took.

Just a guy, because I was born that way.

Still here

My tag here is pthesz, which I use everywhere I go on the internet. It is a combination of the first initial of my given name and my last name.

I have been here for 3 years (I think) and have been a Cardinals fan since they arrived here from St. Louis.

I am a regular reader and very occasional poster. Love this site. it is part of my daily internet reading.

Thanks for doing this again HevChev!

Pretty simple for me

I’m Jesse and I went to college in Santa Barbara, CA. Thus JesseSB.
Been a fan since 2004 and use to comment regularly on the Cardinals forum and found this place through a posters link. Found ROTB to much more civil and much better run.

Guess where I'm from...

Yep, no surprises, the clue’s in the name, been a Cardinals supporter since ‘85, but my interest waned about the time they moved to Az, it was just too difficult to follow them from England, but since the internet developed, I’ve rekindled my support. Still have the gameshirt I picked up all those years ago, but it’s a much tighter fit now!
Rooting for Toler at the moment, as I had an ACL reconstruction on Tues, a football injury, though not at the same rarified level as Greg’s. (I was heping out with a blocking pad for my son’s team when my leg stuck in the turf just as someone hit me.)
Don’t comment too much but look at ROTB every day, great site.

UK

Lived in the UK (Methwold, near Lakenheath)for a couple of years and remember that it was very difficult to keep track of the NFL while I was there. The internet surely does help. Love to have the overseas support!

Love the post..

Thx hevchev.
I’ve been a loyal Cards fan since the early 70’s when the Cards drafted Terry Metcalf. I don’t have a 2nd favorite team and I’ve always been subject to ridicule from freinds. I’m from Brooklyn, NY and I’ve only recently ever met other Cards fans. (on a cruise to the Bahamas). So finding this community of Cards fans has become an everyday read for me.

I use my name (Rob Loosli) because I'm just not creative

But I have loved the Cardinals since I was 8 living in Mesa and I was just figuring out what football was. I was a year behind Todd Heap in JR High (didn’t know him though) before I moved to PA where I’ve lived for the last 17 years.

I get a lot of funny looks when I tell people I’m a Cards fan, but it’s become part of me and I couldn’t imaginecheering for anyone else.

Um, guess.

Born and raised in Alaska. As there is no pro teams in Alaska, I got to pick any team I wanted to root for. Took a trip to AZ as a kid when Suns were playing the Bulls in the championship and fell in love with the suns, which lead to falling in love with the Cards. I remember jumping around the room for joy on christmas morning when I got my very own jake plummer jersey. Unfotunately, don’t live in AK anymore, now in Miami, FL. I miss it dearly and hope to return there some day. Never been to a Cards game, also in my future :)

Hadrarius,

Latinized form of haderaere (middle high german) meaning “grumbler” from the verb hadern “to argue, to quarrel, to squabble, to tease”.

I adopted the Cardinals as my team as soon as it was announced they were moving to Arizona. I grew up a New England Patriots fan. Lived in Maine as a kid. Moved to Arizona a couple years before the Cardinals did. I find it amusing how much hate there is toward the Patriots because back when I was sporting their colors they were about as disrespected as possible. When I moved to the desert they had just suffered the then worst superbowl defeat ever. That was their first trip and very flukey (bottom seed). I see a lot of similarity with the Cardinals that way and can’t wait until they are equally reviled for their own success.

I just sort of stumbled onto Revenge of the Birds around Nov 2009. Been sucked in since.

And I guess we're also explaining how we found ROTB?

I came here off a link on Yahoo! Sports, so I guess that contract between Yahoo! Sports and Sb nation is worth it after all.

And I cheer for every Arizona team (Because they’re the hometown team). In fact, I can’t cheer for any non-Arizona/Phoenix team. So, I guess that means I can never be a bandwagon fan.

I'm getting old ...

I remember watching the Browns as a lil man through all the good years 82-87. I was born in Cleveland in 78 and grew up watching the Browns. The disappointments by way of Elway and the Broncos are still etched in my mind. All the classic moments of the Browns failures still to this day present and all the jaw dropping catches by Brian Brennan. The battles with the Warren Moon lead Oilers still delight the old mind. Up until my teen years I was a Browns fan as it was bred into me. It was 1997 when I chose the Cards after picking up a magazine that laid out all the offseason comings and goings etc. I looked through the magazine team by team and chose the Cardinals. I always enjoyed choosing teams I thought had potential to be great. In ‘97 I was living with my Grandparents in WV and had come to enjoy watching Adrian Murrell at WVU and he was on the Cards roster. Between my time as a Browns fan and coming to choose my own team I watched football for the love of the game without a favorite. I grew to love Larry Centers Frank Sanders among many others and knew the Cardinals were my team. I haven’t regretted a moment of my fandom and I couldn’t root for any other. The Cardinals will be my team until I die. My handle here on ROTB is simple. Az for Arizona… 78 for the year I was born and true because I’m a fan no matter the up’s and downs – true fan.

Let's see, the first part of my name is actually a nickname I used to have, based on my last name, which is Criscuolo.

Crisco is how you pronounce it, without the “lo” at the end, so that became my nickname once. 219 is pretty much just a random number. I’ve lived here in Tucson, Arizona since I was about 4(which, I’m 22 now, I’m probably one of the youngest ones here), so I’ve always rooted for Arizona teams.

Hawkwind...

…was the username I had on another Cardinals forum and when I found this one (link on AZ Republic in Aug. ‘08) I kept it to be consistent. Hawkwind is a prog/stoner band that’s as old as I am and best known for sacking Lemmy in ’76 so he could start Motorhead, the name of the last song he wrote with Hawkwind. I used to use this for my username when I could but found on a lot of sites it was already taken. So I use a more unique name on most other venues (tsrorexx on Twitter for example).

Back in ‘08 I was helping CGolden who was running the show then, then was ghost writing for him when work/wife crunch happened, he and I both faded into the background when Andrew took over. Still running the Pick’em Leagues out of habit and because it’s good to reconnect with the Cardinals’ fans again.

I have a good feeling about this season, I think the Cards will surprise a few “experts” this year. I don’t see a SB appearance this year but next year…you never know…

Don't waste time or Time will waste you.

Drullin'OverDaCards

To make a long storey really short my family plays scrabble at a really competitive cut throat level and we always fight about whether urban slang is allowed. In one of these games I tried to use the word drull. My brother balked and went online to look it up and it appears in the urban dictionary which we allowed that game and therefore I won. The word stuck with me.

I have only ever had one person ask about my name and that was on Niner Nation by a guy trying to give me crap for spelling drooling wrong.

While that was an interesting take on my name you have to look up Drull in the urban dictionary to try to figure out what I was really going for http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Drull

Drull has three definitions all of which describe how I feel about the Cardinals at some point in time almost every year:
1) a desire to literally rip someone’s head off and f them
2) a desolate sense of forgiveness
3) a feeling of nothingness

Representing the Cards in the Deep Deep South (S. America)!!

Well wrote one of these but apparently it didn’t make it up, so a quick replacement…… Moved to Phoenix in 1999 from Oregon (Ducks fan), and started watching the Cards, getting more and more into the team, probably a declared fan in 2003 / 2004 or so. Also a big dbacks and suns fan.

Last year I moved down here to Santiago, Chile where NFL is hard to find. Just watched the game at one of the very few sports bars here (that show football not just fútbol) yesterday and actually met another cards fan!! We’re very few down here and it is probably pretty legit to say im the biggest Cards fan in the country!!! So I consider myself a representative. Was recently in Arizona and even bought my chilean girlfriend a cards shirt, we’ll see if we can get her on board ;)

Here a lot, don’t post a lot, but I’m arround….. GO CARDS!!!!!!!

by CardsRepInChile on Sep 12, 2011 11:07 AM MDT reply actions

Very Unexpected!!

I finally got a seat at the bar and a girl behind me couldn’t help buy notice my fitz shirt and we started talking, apparently her family have been season ticket holders for 16 seasons and she’s been to almost evey home game for the past 10 or so seasons! was pretty awesome, she wasnt too up to date on the 2011 roster but i spend way too much time reading about the Cards, so I could help out. But yes, was great, didn’t see a single Cards fan down here all last season so was a nice change! GO CARDS!!!!
