Ryan Lindley vs. Richard Bartel

Hey guys, not trying to fill up the FanPost box, but haven't seen much discussion on this topic and wanted to hear where people think our QBs will end up after this position battle....

Richard Bartel (2/3/83, 6'3", 233 lbs.) is from Texas, and was a letterman in HS, drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, and played for their farm teams in 2001-2002, before enrolling in college. Played pretty well as a QB in the small school Tarleton State University in Texas, enough so that he got into Cowboys camp in 2007 as an UDFA. Since then he's been on practice squads on the Browns (also 53 man roster), Jags and Redskins before coming the Cards in December of 2010. He hasn't played too much for us, but by all accounts has been a very positive team guy, as well as intelligent and a hard worker.

Rich has gotten limited playing time but had his first NFL TD coming last season at the 49ers when we were trailing heavily in the 4th quarter. But Rich also looked good in the pre-season and always looks very engaged on the sidelines during games, with coaches also indicating his strong participation in the film room.

Ryan Lindley (6/22/89, 6'4" 220lbs.) our 2012 6th Round draft pick out of San Diego State also played well in HS (El Capitan, CA) and was more highly sought out of college. At SD State his weakness was his accuracy with an overall 55.48 completion percentage (nfldraftscout.com) but did lead SDSU to the first bowl game in 2010 since 1998. He's a young guy with a lot of physical tools, big frame and strong arm - seems like a younger Skelton - but also, like Skelton, has issues with accuracy and footwork. From what others have said about him, such as former teammate Demarco Sampson, he apparently has good leadership traits.

Bartel is the more experienced, older player, who is more familiar with the playbook. Where as Lindley is the younger guy with a potential large upside, but is most likely not ready to come in at the begining of the season, if need be. The question I ask is:

Who will win the QB Competition for the 3rd String QB? Will the Cards carry 4 QBs? I'd say we most likely carry 3, but if we put Lindley on the Practice Squad, there's always the following possibility:

If a team likes a player on another club's practice squad, that team is free to sign him to a contract--but only for its 53-man roster, and it has to keep the player on the 53-man roster for at least three weeks. The team that signs the player doesn't have to pay any kind of compensation to the team that lost him. Practice squad players are pretty much fair game. There's one small exception, though: You can't sign a player off another team's practice squad in the week before you play that team.

Because Bartel was briefly activated to the 53 man roster in Cleveland in 2008, and again last season as a Cardinal, I believe he is not eligible for the 2012 Cards Practice Squad.

So our coaching staff will have to make a decision. What do they decide? What would you decide??
