FA and DRAFT DAY (2012)
What started off 1-6 horrific start turned into a pretty decent end of the season finishing 8-8. The defense scheme implemented by Coach Horton finally came to life during the final 9 games. However, with such a stagnant offense (hopefully we get a more creative offensive playcaller again) (wether thats Haley or not) one thing was certain we need a significant upgrade on the offensive line and a TRUE #2 receiver. This years FA class is FILLED with OL talent which we can pull into a building team and become a contender again. My take of the free agents are:
RB: Ray Rice or Matt Forte (I'd Love to steal Ray rice or Matt Forte away but that would crowd a talented backfield.)
WR: Wes Welker, Desean Jackson, Marques Coleston, Robert Meachum, Vincent Jackson (Wes welker more than likely will return to NE, Jackson even with attitude issues learning from fitz would make a deadly combo, Meachum n coleston are strong quick receivers able to catch and run and Vincent Jackson would be a BEAST next to Fitz. At least one of these guys)
TE: Jemicael Finley, Fred Davis, Joel Dressen. (Finley is a true passing threat, Fred davis is a blocking machine, BUT Dressen helps block for the dynamic RB's in Houston and is a good threat out of the backfield.)
OL: Carl Nicks, Demetius Bell.( i doubt NO will let nicks go but hes young and would provide excellent depth on the line. Bell is a young mover from buffalo that would adds good pass/run blocking ability.)
DL: AUBRAYO FRANKLIN!! (I wanted us to get Franklin last year since we fully converted to a 3-4 system and is a MONSTER over the center. only signed one year deal with NO and would love to bring him in with dan williams, david carter can learn from him)
LB: Ahmad Brooks (still a 3-4 linebacker from our rival 9ers and create a talented group of linebackers)
PUNTER!!: Mat McBriar (WE NEED GREAT KICKING GAME)
RESIGN: Campbell, Richard Marshall, Vonnie Holiday, Mike Leach!, Feely! (everyone else could bring em back and if provide good ability to stay on the team keep them.)
Draft: Would love Decastro or martin OL from Stanford, if not their. Reiff. if he not their (id LOVE BLACKMAN! next to fitz but that wont happen). if those 4 artn there we go LB! Cortney upshaw, Luke kuechly, Don'te Hightower, etcetc
Vontaze Burfict - now this is a rediculous! reach. but he is a dynamic player if he wasnt so much a dang bonehead about personal fouls. if he happens to fall i'd take him later NOT 1st round.
What you guys think?

We need to draft an o-lineman
the top 3 Left tackles or Decastro. If all are gone trade down and take Konz© or Adams (LT)
by CardsDefense on Jan 14, 2012 6:44 PM MST via mobile reply actions
I personally think Kalil is the only sure tackle in the bunch. IMHO the next best is Mike Adams from OSU.

I love it, after several years of this OL, I'm ready to BPOL as my draft strategy
BPOL = Best Possible Offensive Lineman

I think we're set at RB, adding one of those guys would be expensive.
WR: Would most likely be Pierre Garcon from the Colts.
TE: I think we’re set there too. Unless we get rid of Heap we have a talented TE Corps.
OL: Demetrius Bell would be great. Although it looks like Levi is coming around at LT, but it’d be better to move him back to RT.
DL: We’re set there too. Campbell if he’s resigned, Dockett, and Williams with a full offseason will be dangerous.
LB: Someone to challenge Bradley and Lenon for the starting role next to Washington.
Punter: Is where I truly disagree with you. Zastudil played well for us. He averaged 45.2 yards per punt, compared to Mat’s 43.8. He also had more punts inside the 20, with 24.
Resigning: Agree, Agree, Meh, Agree.
+1
But I would also look at Casey Hampton. He is a Pit player so Whiz and Horton would love him, and he is still a beast.

Good idea
He would provide experience and the Steeler mentality that Whiz wants.

Hampton seriously injured his knee if their playoff game
I doubt he’s on the market (still under contract for another two years I think) but even if they cut him, he won’t be healthy in time to help in 2012

A smaller name #2 would be best
We can only spend so much at the WR position with Larry on the roster.

Cardinals, Suns, D-backs for life!
Wes Welker, Desean Jackson, Marques Coleston, Robert Meachum, Vincent Jackson
Those are all bigger names, IMO. Maybe not Meachum, but the rest for sure.

What about Jerome Simpson from Cincy?

I would consider him a smaller name WR as well
He won’t be asking for a ton of money like some of those other WRs that will be out in the FA market. I haven’t watched enough of him to know if I like him.

Well since he was finally indicted for drug trafficking earlier in the year
Let me just take his name out of the hat right now.
That legal stuff usually takes years to sort out and more than likely he'll get a slap on the hand.
I’m not saying that’s right but it is what it is.

Drug trafficing is a class D Felony
and has a a punishment of 1-5 years in prison. This isn’t just a minor weed charge.
Huge fan of the Steelers. (that includes "Steelers West")

I get that but all to often whether it's a Stallworth or a Pacman problem they get off easy. That's all I'm saying. If it were you or I we'd be screwed unless we got a top notch lawyer.

I completely agree
I was just saying the guys looking for top dollar will be out of our reach.

Still think Feely can go
I wouldn’t touch our backs or tight ends. We’re set there.
Of the WR’s you listed I really only see Meachem as an option. We won’t go after someone who thinks they’re a WR1.
That's tough
On a personal level I like Feely but he cost us a game earlier in the season and has no range. Is there an upgrade available who is consistent?
by Jesse Reynolds on Jan 15, 2012 2:41 PM MST up reply actions
I'm not sure if this is a complete list or not
Rian Lindell (BUF)
Mike Nugent (CIN)
Phil Dawson (CLE)
Neil Rackers (HOU)
Josh Scobee (JAC)
Nick Folk (NYJ)
Connor Barth (TB)
forgot Matt Prater

Dion Branch is a FA and he can ball
Want to draft Decastro or LB. Don’t like Rieff or Martin. No to drafting a WR, to many good ones in FA. Bell would be awesome. No to DL I think we r good there.
by cgcardzfan on Jan 15, 2012 1:01 PM MST via mobile reply actions
No to DL?
I think we need depth behind CC, DD and DW. Besides Carter everyone is pretty old.
by Jesse Reynolds on Jan 15, 2012 2:42 PM MST up reply actions
We could use depth but abroyo franklin is old as well
So what would the point be in picking him up? Let Big Dan progress as a starter, maybe draft a DE or DT in the late rounds. But wasting big money on a FA for our D line isn’t worth it, even though the thought of Franklin, dockett, Campbell is scary. Holliday and eason will do for now until we draft more guys.

It may not sound like a big need
But a #2 WR is huge. Fitz needs to get pressure taken off him. We need a big-name one too, because after this year, it’s obvious that Boldin is going to be hard to replace.
I don’t mean DeSean Jackson is our only hope, but somebody like Meachem would be big too.
Joe Saunders: "They Giants played a really good game, so hats off to us"
I like Rueben Randle out of LSU
if he’s there in the third round when we pick. I also really like Emmanuel Acho. I know it may sound gimmicky just because we have his brother, but little Acho can ball.

Does anyone here have an opinion on Marvin McNutt?
I know he is not that fast (4.57-ish 40 times) but he has maybe the best hands of all the recievers coming out this year, he set his school’s all time td record, and he likes to attack the middle of the field. He has the size for that too at 6’4", 215 lbs. I can see him filling the possession role. He will probably be gone by the 3rd round though.
by Spikedriver on Jan 16, 2012 12:57 AM MST up reply actions
I like McNutt
I’ve seen some stuff on him from my Jags fan friend, because they desperately need a WR. From what i’ve seen and read, he looks like a could be a good #WR, perfect fit for what we’re missing. But like you said, he probably won’t be around when we’re picking. I see him being taken in the mid 2nd round at the latest

McNutt as an option
I would be happy to have him as an option at WR. I never really got to see him play throughout his career but when Iowa played Oklahoma in the Insight bowl this last bowl season he played pretty well!
78 catches, 16.3 YAC, 12 TDS, 1269 Yards this year.
In the Insight Bowl 4 catches only 46 yards but he looked good in the game. His qb just didnt have enough time to find him.
if available i wouldn’t dislike the choice

Has anyone thought of Mario Williams?
Even though he was injured 5 games in this season, he looked like a beast as a converted DE to LB
and he is also a free agent, and the Texans have a lot of players to pay so he could opt to not return to them due to money?
by Aussie Cardinals Fan on Jan 17, 2012 12:02 AM MST reply actions
He's a good player
I think I’d rather develop a draft pick, but if the Cards want a FA backer, he would be high on the list. Have no idea what he would cost though.
by Spikedriver on Jan 17, 2012 12:50 AM MST up reply actions
we really need to steal a reciver in this large free agent pool. Like Bell from buffalo if available. Draft yea any of big names like Martin Castro Reiff but looking like linebacker like Upshaw, or Butkas award winner.
Sorry Burfit refused to reenter a game after being pulled for poor play, and its been said at times does not get along with team mates, please it would be a disater if pulled anything on Dockett, Wilson, Leno any of our leaders
I bet Leno would be a horrible football player.
does have a lot of nice cars though. All kidding aside, I completely agree with you on Burfict. He had a chance to be a top defender in all of college with his freakish athletic ability but he just does not have the desire to be great nor the intellect from what I have heard. I don’t know of ANY player that was worth a first round pick without a passion to play the game at its highest level. Whatever team does end up drafting him will regret it. Please fans, and more importantly FO, don’t be homers on this kid. He has not place in the Cardinals locker room.
by Superfizzogotflow on Jan 17, 2012 6:58 PM MST up reply actions
yea I agree on Burfict
I can’t believe that guy with so many very obvious red flags is still a mid-first round pick. He literally quit on his team and everyone seems to just give him a pass b/c of his talent. Hasn’t the league learned about this kind of behavior from past experiences?
by Steamin' Beamin' on Jan 18, 2012 9:57 AM MST up reply actions
Seriously
Everyone out of ASU from teammates to coaches hates the guy. He didn’t even get mentioned as an honorable mention in the all-pac12 team (voted on by the coaches…..).

is Calais Campbel going to be franchised, let go, or extended?
what is the gm and head coach saying?

They (FO) have been working on an extension but it's not done. If it doesn't get done Calais will be fanchised and they'll continue to work on an extension.
