LoL@San Francisco
So our much disliked rival San Francisco just wrapped up a fantastic loss, one in which Alex Smith proved the divisional round was absolutely the exception for him and not the rule, but also that San Francisco has no talent at WR what so ever. First let's start off with Jim Harbaugh, because if I am a niners fan I would want to hear what he has to say in the post game press conference. Turns out Jim Harbaugh likes putting on a show and running his mouth when his team wins, but declined an interview after the loss in the championship game, what kind of leader is that? As most of us know this was just a fluke season for the Niners and we need not worry they are still as incompetent as ever on offense. Which brings me to my next question who is the bigger draft bust Alex Smith or Jamarcus Russell?
It's tough to decide because it needs to come with an asterisk that reads, Al Davis is much smarter than Jed York. Having said that we all know how short of a career Russel had, but on the other hand Smith is still in the league. Smith also has a slew of top picks around him and is still nothing more than a game manager, and now that everyone around the league has a full season of film on Harbaugh's offense, Alex Smith wearing a niners uniform next is GREAT news for the rest of the NFC west.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

That's easy
Russell is the overweight laughing-stock of the NFL (and is no longer affiliated in any way), Smith just made an appearance in the NFC Conference Championship game. No question Russell is a much bigger bust than Smith, and it’s not particularly close..

Amen to that,
for all the bashing I gave Mike Miller for questionable play calling. I only know the Niners because I have to, but my jaw dropped when they ran Dixon on a jumbo package in a critical 3rd and inches situation, instead of Frank the Tank.

frank gore is insanely good.
his yards after contact are crazy.
If I'm Frank Gore,
I demand a trade, that Dixon run in the jumbo package would be the straw that broke the camels back for me. That poor guy has wasted his career preventing Frisco from picking in the top 3 every season and all they do is call someone else’s number on the plays that seem to matter the most.

This was basically my super bowl.
I could care less who wins between the Pats and GMen. So glad Alice Smith is terrible. Not as bad a Jafatass Russell, but still horrible. The Saints must have been crying watching him play that way after what he did to them in the last 4 minutes.
Well,
the Niners fans were getting so obnoxious in the Bayou that a couple of them got shot. How many people get shot at the ’Stick tonite?

Divisional pride is great and all
But the only thing I really care about is the NFC West’s streak of making it to at least the Divisional Round. The 49ers did that, so in my eyes, they did everything I wanted.
And yes, I cheered for the Giants. And yes, I was happy they won.

This isn't even close
Russel is the obvious bigger bust here. Didn’t know Harbaugh declined to talk to the media though. He needs to man up, it is part of his job.

Probably
But it is not too much to ask a coach/player to talk to the media after the game. It is one thing to do it during the regular season, but you have to do that after a NFC Championship game. It is just part of the job to talk to the media.

Win and lose with grace
While many of us may have been rooting for the Giants last night, this post makes me slightly uncomfortable…
You can’t say with any confidence that this season was a fluke – Harbaugh is clearly a superb coach and has improved the team’s record by 7 wins. It was also 5 wins better than ours, a fact largely determined by our inadequate quarterback play; therefore, to proceed to ask such a farcical question as the one above appears short-sighted as well as facetious.
They may be our rivals, but it is still tough to lose one like that after such a great season by so many players for whom I have huge respect (c.f. Justin Smith, Frank Gore etc.). While I was hoping NY would win, I certainly wouldn’t seek to revel in the 9ers’ loss in a public forum. Get in board with the fact that they are currently a much better team than us: let’s try and close the gap this offseason.

I have to agree here as they ('9er's) were extremely fortunate in the TO ratio this year. They got the bounces or breaks almost always this season. That will not happen next year. That's a statistical anamoly and there's a 90% or greater chance it ....
…. won’t repeat in 2012. I will admit their defense played lights out and yet they have some key players coming up in FA that they may not be able to keep. Therefore the D could suffer next year. The ’9er’s as a whole were extremely fortunate in all phases of the game in ‘11 and that usually doesn’t repeat. If you want I can throw up some stats. I’m not taking away from the coaching or their year as a whole but I do agree luck played a big part in their success. If you can’t acknowledge that I would be kind of well… for a lack of a better word shocked. They will be a solid team next year but not to the level they played in ‘11… I can’t see it. That’s the game in a nut shell … things don’t work the same from year to year even with the same talent and coaching. Just my take.

Luck comes into the equation every game...
ANd I do agree here, they seemed to get many lucky breaks and bounces (except in the NFC championship), but keep in mind that Alex Smith threw FIVE INTs… That is ridiculously low, even for the amount they threw the ball. They did an excellent job in protecting the ball, and their Def did an awesome job at creating TOs… Do I think that they can repeat a 13-3 (14-4) season next year? no, I’m not saying that… but I do believe that they are the team to beat in the West, and anyone that thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. We should hope for improved OL this offseason and continued improvement in the Horton system… Luck be damned, those two factors coupled with improved QB play should at least make the Cards formidable opposition to the West…
Look at David Garrard in 07
18 TDs and 3 Picks
After that…
08: 15 and 13
09: 15 and 10
10: 23 and 15
I don’t see Alex Smith having a huge dropoff like DA did after his career year, but there will be more turnovers from him next year. People will spend more time over the offseason breaking down his film and they will find ways to stop the 49ers offense.

With Confidence,
The 49ers season was a fluke, no way does a team who’s best Receiver is also the TE does enough on offense to win 13 games.

Keep in mind the TE is becoming a huge weapon now
With the Pats their best receiver is a TE, could probably say the same thing with the Saints too and Graham although they have a ton of good targets to throw to.

No way ... at least I wouldn't. IMO Hernandez not even close to the player Welker is and I don't see him becoming that either.

One of my friends is a big Pats fan
so im forced to watch a bunch of games with him. From what i’ve seen, Hernandez is better. Welker is primarily short routes and YAC, Hernandez can run all the routes, has great speed, great hands, and great size. Nothing against Welker, he’s a great receiver, but IMO Hernandez is physically better, and young, so he still can improve

Hernandez's youth is what keeps him in the conversation. He's a good player but I

Wow guys...
I’m not a niners fan in the slightest, but let’s be real here… Alex Smith is nowhere near the level of “draft bust”… The guys threw for over 3,000 yards, had 3:1 Td to int and performed admirably against the Saints in his first postseason game. Let’s not forget that he has gone through as many different systems as he has years in this league, which is setting up even the best to fail. I do not consider him an elite QB by an stretch of the imagination, but to compare him to Jamarcus is simply illogical. His poor showing yesterday was not really all his fault. Play-calling (as we Cards fans should know) had some part of it, putting the offense that is a known run heavy offense in tough 3rd and long situations. Can’t blame the QB when your runs get stuffed on 3rd and short too. The guys threw for two TDs to his lone pass-catching play-maker and did not commit a TO… I think the 49ers are going to be a tough team next year, their OL is ridiculous and I for one think they will be tough to beat.
I do however agree that declining an interview is tasteless when it comes to Harbaugh. Let’s not confuse the situation. Yes, the coach made a poor decision to decline an interview, but this in no way is telling of how the team will perform next season. My god, they took the Giants to OT, and Manning was hit TWENTY times! I for one hope the Cards can improve enough to take this team on next year, if both teams were to stay pat, I unfortunately would put my money on the 49ers. Let’s hope the Cards can improve their line and that the Def picks up where it left off. If they can do that, I do feel the Cards will be the team to beat, but until then, let’s congratulate the 49ers on an excellent season… whether you feel they overachieved or not, regardless of what you feel about their coach, there is no debating that they didn’t have an excellent season that I hope the Cards can match in 2012.
We beat,
the Niners this season.

and?
we also had an 8-8 record that could easily have been 4-12. Its not often that teams win 4 OT games in a season, actually its the first time that’s EVER happened. They were actually lucky to be in OT in a few of the games as well. The 49ers went 14-4 and almost made it to the Super Bowl. Beating them once doesn’t mean anything. Keep in mind, I love beating the 49ers, nothing in football makes me happier actually… However, being a realist, I know that its no fluke going 14-4, and they most likely will improve their roster next year, so the Cards better be sure to do the same.
I know how you feel about Kolb, so the question is, would you take Alex Smith over Kevin Kolb?
Or
We could have easily been 12-4

Not dreaming, look at the 4th quarters they gave up leads
With slight improvements we very well could have been 12- 4. That said, the Niners pulled it out and deserve their props. They’d be in the Superbowl exept for an extremely inept punt returner.
Hopefully next year the media will recognize the NFC West as the premier division in the NFL.

there's a lot more to it than that...
Look, I want the Cards to succeed as much as the rest of you, but they were 24th in points, 25th in yards differential, and had a -36 point differential. They were much closer to a 4 win team than a 12 win team. Having a big question mark at the most important position is what scares me. All I’m saying is that this post makes the 49ers out to be this lucky team that will never in a million years reproduce these results, but I tend to disagree. If the Cards do not improve quite a bit, they will not have much chance at winning the West next year. And I’m usually pretty optimistic about these things. Changes to the roster need to happen (OL) and I am hoping that the answer to our QB dilemma is on the roster and stays healthy, but if thats not the case, let’s hope Manning gets healthy and Colin Cowherd and many of the analysts are right that he would be wise coming here.
Your kidding me right?

what did i say that is so unreasonable?
I hate the fact the 49ers had such a good year, but I’m not naive enough to think that they had this season all based on luck. They had the best defense in the freaking sport. That isn’t bound to change much next year. So you don’t agree that the Cards got lucky a few times? yeah they did, I will also agree that they got unlucky a few times. Thats football. Thats life. Sorry, a team that ranks in the bottom third in most categories is not close to being a 12 win team. That doesn’t make me any less fan than you, it means I am looking at the big picture. Questioning me as to whether Im a Cards fan? At least I didn’t make pessimistic hate posts on our starting QB all year.
No I meant,
the Cardinals were hardly closer to 4-12 than 8-8, if you even bothered watching some of the losses in the first half of the season. You would have seen the games against 3 out of 4 of the teams that played on Sunday, and not only beat one of them but if the game ended at halftime would have won against both Giants and Ravens.

There were only 2 games the Cardinals were outmatched from the opening gun: The Pitt game and Minn game ... both of which pains me to say.
The rest the Cardinals were in from the beginning and slowly but sadly collapsed or didn’t execute.

I guess I'm not that great at getting my points across.
I don’t think the Cards were a 4 win team, I am just disputing the claim that they easily could’ve won 12 games… all I’m saying is a team that wins 8 games, 4 of which were in OT, and 2 of which they were lucky to even get to OT, were not close to being a 12 win team. 12 wins is something the Cards have never accomplished, and you honestly can say that you think they were close to accomplishing that this year? Even with extraordinary QB play from Warner, the best they did was 10 wins. Look, I’d love to celebrate a 12 win season, there is nothing I hate more than watching a team lose and not make the playoffs. My point is that the Cards need work to match the type of season the 49ers just had. That’s not really debatable. If they stay with the status quo, do you really expect them to all of a sudden be 4 wins better? They need help at OL and better/more consistent QB play and hopefully the bounces that didn’t go their way this season will next year.
we were pretty competitive in all of our games.
with some improved QB play (*cough*PEYTON*cough*) we could win 10 or 11 games next season. I know getting Peyton is not likely, so we might still struggle a bit next season…
i have zero confidence in kolb and have very little confidence in john skelton. so if we have to rely on them next season, we might stay around the 7-9/8-8 mark
This sums up this post perfectly. Alex Smith is not a draft bust.
’m not a niners fan in the slightest, but let’s be real here… Alex Smith is nowhere near the level of "draft bust"… The guys threw for over 3,000 yards, had 3:1 Td to int and performed admirably against the Saints in his first postseason game.
Jamarcus Russell was a draft bust, and if he’d have taken life seriously in the NFL and got his sleep apnea, etc under control he could have found work on another team like other first rounders who don’t pan out to the high expectations ::cough Leinart cough::. But the money got to him and he couldn’t play the game seriously after being handed so much on a Black and Silver platter.
Whenever I hear about his medical issues that he blames the weight, sleeping in meetings, etc on I always have to ask “why didn’t they affect you in college?” Is it because you weren’t paid millions of dollars up front without throwing one pass? I think he was just a young man who was paid too much and lost his motivation to perform. He’s a great guy now, but Russell will never shake being the biggest bust in the modern day NFL.

Love the loss
As a Saints fan, I can relate to you Cardinals fans. It was nice seeing them lose last night. I believe that their win against the Saints was a fluke. 5 turnovers and the Saints still should have won the game. I also think that the Niners could’ve easily lost 3 or 4 more games than they did. Watch them next season when they are playing a 1st place schedule.

The fact that the coach cant meet with the media during losses is a reflection of their team, all big mouths and shows failures when you got to buck up. Yes this year was a fluke face it Gore’s got to be run down, next year will be hard for him. Lets see who they lose in free agency and QB got a year of work, for teams to prepare for, making it harder on him to repeat. Like the Cards chances
Yes, Gore is likely on his way down
but Kendall Hunter is scary. Always a big play threat. I would expect some regression overall, but with the way they play (brutally physical), they will always be tough.
