The Arizona Cardinals will,
trade away and get some more draft stock with the 13th pick of the NFL draft. With the Senior bowl coming up I figured it was time to warm up for the many draft prediction articles to surely follow. While what I would like to see most is trading down, but who knows what is going to happen with the 13th slot. The Cardinals took the BPA approach last year and we had an extremely productive rookie class that will only go better. My wish list pre senior bowl.
David Decastro- Now I know we need to address the tackle position, but I keep seeing more and more that this kid is the best guard prospect in over a decade. Why not take a chance and solidify the inside of our line and put more focus on tackle.
Michael Brockers- CC and DD are already the best tandem in the league, but you can never have to many good linemen on defense. If you want proof just look at the New York Giants.
Anyways this season is almost completely in the books, and here's to hoping Michael Bidwill stays aggressive through his tenure.

again think depends on whose available as BPA at 13. If meets a need also great.Dont we get a extra third round draft choice for Hightower? can we trade that as an option to get back into second? What ever looking forward to being at the darft when we pick
It's a 6th round pick for Hightower
Had he not gone on IR, would have probably been a 5th round pick

I loved Timmy and it's sad all the Cards are going to get in return for him is a damn 6th round pick. Get better Timmy.

we need to get the best players to build a better team, not the best players at a position we could use more talent at.

Martin,
has slow feet, I’m not down on Levi Brown, but Martin will be just like him.

Slow feet?! lol, don't watch him in slow motion then.
No Martin isn’t perfect but he’s not a reach and is very coachable IMO. There are many picks that can improve this team & I’m not going to sit here and say Martin is the answer.

He is slow footed as he's consistently burnt off the edge. If someone pushes fast off the outside then pops in he doesn't recover well at all. IMHO.
"The point is, by my standards, I won fair and square."

I wouldn't say consistently beat off the edge
Yes, he is susceptible to speed rushers, but most of his problems are coach-able. He need to improve his footwork, and then he won’t get beat very often by edge rushers. IMO, he has the second fastest feet of the Top 5 Tackles, behind Kalil.

I think he is Levi Brown 2.0
I’ve watched a lot of film on him and I wasn’t very impressed. Rieff is a better tackled. Kalil is the next Joe Thomas.

good choices
would really like to see us choose any of them. But I think we will see and kind of hope we trade down with someone like Cleveland who has two firsts and get a second from them. Reason being is this class is heavy on offensive line talent. Can easily pick up someone good in the late first or second.
Sorry folks, park's closed. Moose out front shoulda told ya.
I think the Giants comparison is not that great
Dlinemen are much more valuable in a 4-3… Its better to stockpile on OLBs, or in the cards case just get a couple of consistent quality players to begin with.

It’s not really a valid comparison to look at a 4-3 team and try to emulate what they’re doing.

Ok,
So would it be that bad to have another guy who is almost identical to CC on the team?

I think Dockett fits the bill nicely
Sure, some depht would be nice but as far as starters I think we are more than set
I will acknowledge Dockett is being somwhat wasted in a 3-4
If he is this good, what could he be on a defense that really played to his strengths
Can the Cards honestly pay both CC and DD big money and still field a team? This has been on my mind for quite some time and I honestly don't know. That's a ton of cash.
"The point is, by my standards, I won fair and square."

Yes, they can
It’s really tough to comprehend the future scenario of the new CBA salary cap. Rookie contrats are a shell of what they used to be, increased revenue leads to a higher cap, and the new CBA requires teams to spend more money (starting in ’13). As long as we continue to filter in guys still on their rookie contracts (Dumpster Dan, David Carter, ObScho, DWash, Acho) our salary will be well under the cap limit. DWash is setting himself up for a huge payday next year

Darren said in his blog (in a response to a comment) that salary cap isn’t the issue.
by Jesse Reynolds on Jan 26, 2012 11:25 AM MST up reply actions
Our starters are
Dockett, Campbell, and Williams, with Eason and Carter as backups. Like ELrupps said, depth is good, but in a 3-4, it’d be better to stockpile with LBers.
Though I like where our LB’ing corps is headed.
Joe Saunders: "They Giants played a really good game, so hats off to us"
Rotation matters,
in our scheme. It’s still important to keep the front 3 fairly fresh so they don’t get shoved around by the end of the game. How many times have we seen that happen over the last couple of seasons?

Still though, you are using the 13th overall pick to get a backup DE?
No one would support that. One of these days we have to come around to the fact that pass rush in a 3-4 comes from the OLB spot, not the DL. If you want to stock up at a position, make it the OLB.

Who says he,
stays as a backup? For all we know CC may not be around, or another good season out of Dockett and he could possibly be trade bait, we could probably fetch a 2nd and 4th if he has another season like this one. That’s what keeps the best winning long term.

I just feel like at some point we have move on from the mindset that pass rush comes from the DE spot
We run a 3-4 defense now. Pass rush in the 3-4 comes from the OLB spot and capable DE’s can be found much later in the draft. Will we have Pro Bowl level play from the DE spot – NO. But in the 3-4 defense, DE isn’t a make or break position, it’s a luxury.

What mindset?
You take away the DE’s ability to consume blocks and olinemen will be knocking LB’s down all day long.

The mindset that says we need premier "first round" type talents at DE
And/or the mindset that our DE’s need to be pass rushers.
And neither CC or DD are “block consuming” defensive ends.

DD certainly has been though
Almost every time he is one-on-one with an offensive linemen, he wins. Any time you don’t see him in the opponents backfield, you can likely bet he was double-teamed.

Sure they are,
CC and DD do plenty of both. We’ll see less and less of them if/when we keep purging former Steelers out of the lineup.

Get a serious pass rusher off the edge
and we’ll see more and more of them I think. Both those guys can get at a quarterback. You can only hold so many players in to block. Like you say, get rid of the old steeler baggage, replace it with younger, faster, more talented players. We can count one gone at least this season. Maybe two.
Exactly,
I still don’t get what he means by pressure HAS to come from an OLB, it a 3-4 it SHOULD come from OLB’s but it isn’t like 3-4 DE’s just eat blocks.

Hard to answer this
Just depends on who is at the board for our pick. I have no idea what other teams will be selecting at this point so we have to wait til draft day. Either take a tackle or grab BPA.

Cardinals, Suns, D-backs for life!
I think you trade up if you're desperate to win now
Which I don’t believe we are. I think there are two reasons to trade down — there’s nobody left on the board that we think we won’t be able to get a little later, or we want to start a youth movement and win in a couple of years. The most likely scenario is that we take who we want at 13. A couple guys will slip out of the top 10 and might be there, or we could reach a little bit and make sure we get the guy we want who is rated a little lower in the round. There will only be 12 players taken off the board by our pick; there are going to be some guys there that we like. Remember when we got Dan Williams and Daryl Washington — those two players were around the top 10 of our board and we got them at the end of the first and early second.
That's a good way to put that
So far the FO has made solid choices in the draft and I think grabbing a good player (BPA), regardless of position, is always a smart move instead of reaching for someone.

Not to mention,
the last team that traded the sink to win now, didn’t get too far in the post season (Atlanta)

One thing I wanted to point out about trading down
Is how consistent we have been with drafting well in the second round. We traded away our second and I think if we had both a first and second we’d have a better shot at getting a sure thing if one or the other draft pick doesn’t pan out. We still have a lot of holes to fill and this would greatly improve our chances of filling them.
Sorry folks, park's closed. Moose out front shoulda told ya.

Screw the second round
look at our track record in the fifth! I tink we should trade back until we have every teams fifth rounder. Guaranteed success!

If only it was that easy. I agree the Cards have done exceptionally well in the late rounds of the draft. It doesn't always equal success. I am sure you know this but felt I needed to state it anyway.

Well I would bet most teams would be hard pressed to give a better example of a "good pick" in the 2nd round as Calais. He's on the verge of being elite.

Pretty hit or miss - as is much of the draft
For every Daryl Washington and Calais Campbell, there’s a Cody Brown and Alan Branch.

True, but overall he's got to be considered a "bad" pick
A very early second rounder who gave you almost zero production until his final season.

Injuries would be the only way he's a Cody Brown type pick. IMHO this kid is going to be a beast for many years to come.

Technically we've already gotten more out of him than Cody Brown
The team loves him and he had a good showing in a shortened off-season. Only thing we got back from Brown was a bill for a roomful of Nike’s.
I know this .. I was just professing my Card love for a young back that I believe will dominate here shortly. That is if his health allows him to play.

Well,
I’m thinking at best we get Fast Willie 2.0 and at worst we get another productive yet injury prone back. Let’s just hope he doesn’t have fumbilitis

Too soon to say who should be drafted yet.
Free agency will open before the draft. Could change the picture quite a bit.
