My Top 5: 1st rd draft prospects
This will be a 5 series article, I will reveal a new prospect each day so keep checking back in. Please leave your comments, opinions, are whatever you have to say. Just something to keep us interested for another 6 months lol.
So today I will start with this guy :
1) David Decastro, OG, Stanford - 6'5 - 307
DeCastro is a smart, technically sound guard who has been an integral part of Stanford’s dominant power rushing attack for three years. While not overly impressive physically, DeCastro beats his opponents consistently by being fundamentally sound, consistent with effort, and taking advantage of his natural flexibility to gain leverage advantages. He is a master at pulling and trapping, and opens holes in the running game with a seek-and-destroy attitude. One of the top guards I have watched on tape, DeCastro is worthy of top-15 consideration in the 2012 draft.
Pass Blocking
DeCastro is solid in pass protection, helping keep all-world QB Andrew Luck safe for the past three years. While possessing only average anchor strength, DeCastro fights for leverage with his hands and stay under the pads of his opponent consistently well. He keeps his arms extended in pass protection and does a good job keeping his feet moving and maintaining balance. Larger defenders may give him trouble on the inside at the next level. DeCastro is listed at 310 lbs. but is very lean looking and has the frame to add some weight in the NFL.
Run Blocking
DeCastro’s main area of excellence is run blocking. He easily walls off defenders in the run game, and never seems to get beat at the point of attack. He uses quick feet to pull and is as good at locating defenders at the second level as I’ve seen. DeCastro may not be a dominant drive blocker (which may come with some added bulk) but he keeps his legs churning with good effort and has the ability to move defenders off the ball. He plays RG at Stanford mainly because of the power rushing attack they use, which has him pulling on seemingly every run play. DeCastro can easily transition to LG in the NFL.
Awareness
DeCastro is an intelligent player and understand his assignments very well. He never seems to be fooled by blitzes in the pass game, and does an excellent job leaving a double-team to pick up an incoming defender. In the run game, he locates defenders extremely well and is seemingly always in the correct position.
Hand Placement
DeCastro does a good job keeping his arms extended and his hands engaged in pass protection, but he does not possess an elite initial punch and he does not usually win battles with his hands. While it may be nitpicking a bit on a player of DeCastro’s caliber, this is an area where he can improve and should be coached up on in the NFL where defenders can be violent with their hands.
Mobility
DeCastro does not possess elite athleticism or foot speed but has enough mobility to easily get to the second level, often even using a quick swim move to get around the tackle on screen plays. His ability to be a pulling guard is one of his best assets and he looks comfortable working in space. He does have nice natural flexibility that allows his to stay low and win leverage battles time after time.
Footwork
DeCastro is very light on his feet and does a beautiful job of using short, choppy steps when pulling/trapping to maintain good balance and leverage. He never stops moving his feet when engaged with a defender and maintain a proper shoulder-width base in pass protection. DeCastro is technically very sound.
Additional Information
Threw shot put in high school and was the Washington State 3A champion in 2008 with a throw of 59’3”.

Awards & Honors

Summary: He is to OG prospects, What Maurkice Pouncey was to C prospects. So basically alot of people are saying he is the real deal OG that only comes around every 5 to 10 years. Considering our starting RG is in his mid 30's, his backup is in the mid 3's as well (360lbs). This could be the guy we bring in to solidify our interior line.
College-Sendelin-DECASTRO---- Looks like a younger, formiddable, interioir line capable of doing their jobs.
PICTURE THIS LINEUP
STARTERS
College Sendelin Hadnot
BACKUPS
Decastro Hadnot Lutui
Thats a perfectly good enough interior line, Now we just need to address the OTs, Which will be done tomorrow.

Nice
DeCastro’s definitely not my first choice but he sounds like a good player.
Looking forward to the rest.
Good first choice to look at, and good post, +1
the more i look at this draft, the more DeCeastro seems like our guy. The big three tackles are likely to be gone, leaving every other need basically even. DeCastro is an day one starter, and likely is our best lineman from day one. Seems like a Whiz BPA kind of pick

replacing hadnot
wouldnt he most likely replace hadnot day one? Hadnot was one of our lowest performing OLs anyway.
Would you rather have the best player at a position of need (although not greatest need) or the third or fourth best player at a position of greatest need? Comparing DeCastro to the tackles…..
Well id consider this a position of need
A lot of pressure and a fair share of sacks were givin up from the interior. The Oline is like a chain link, every link must be strong or it will break. Improving our Gaurd position is just as important as improving our tackle position IMO. I consider OLine in general the greatest need.
And as far as replacing Hadnot from day 1, I dunno. Whiz has that whole thing with starting rookies, he believes every player should earn the starting spot.

I'd take the best player anyday of the week,
I think we should take DeCastro, look at New Orleans it’s really the interior of the line that makes the O look so god.

Like the Pick
Maybe the most secure pick in the whole draft and maybe I’m a bit biased as a Stanford fan but he’s a once in a decade kind of talent at guard.
I think he would be an immense upgrade and could start from day one. And we could lock a guard position for the next 10 years.
If this draft so good in Tackles like they said....
Trade up in the Draft To get Kalili from USC and trade next years first round pick to get Decastro this year. Our pick next year isnt going to be worth much when we win the Superbowl.
You are probably all looking at me like im nuts. Here is the deal if its the best draft in 10 years for the exact positions you need to go from 8-8 or 9-7 playoff team to 12-3 first round bye and superbowl contender for 5 years….DO IT!
A First round next year does you nothing when this is your draft to get the players you need. Our line blows more than hurricane (insert name here). This is the draft for Linemen
A Line Consisting of Matt Kalil, Calvin Coolidge, Lyle Syndline, David DeCastro, and Who gives a shit tackle (or the most hungry in training camp) tackle here line that up in 2 TE set with King and Heap and Sherman FB and Beanie or Ryan Williams. Holy crap we are going to mow people down. (now if you do this and our line is still bad i will change my toon about coach Grimm.)
Few issues with your ideas
We’d have to give up 2 1st rounders and a slew of early-mid round picks. Let’s say we skip the Kalil pick and get an OT at 13 but still want to trade in to the 1st round to get DeCastro. That would cost at least 2 1st rounders and mid-late round picks.
With the new CBA, teams will have to give up a fortune of draft picks to move up (ex: Browns-Falcons trade for Julio Jones)
I don’t know who said this draft’s tackles are legendary. I don’t think any of the elite 3 tackles will be AllPro caliber. Perhaps the ‘legendary’ class of tackles is refering to the depth. With guys like Nate Potter and Zebrie Sanders available in middle to late rounds, there is a chance this turns out to be a legendary tackle class, but it won’t be because of the top 3.

Your absolutely LOCO,
Kalil isn’t nearly as complete a player as Joe Thomas or Jake Long.

I agree
Kalil is being hyped up a bit too much. He still is an absolutely great prospect, and well deserving of the #2 selection of the NFL draft, but unlike Thomas or Long, he is not a Pro Bowler from day one. He very well could be, and is likely a very good Left Tackle from day one, but he’ll have to progress to reach Thomas or Long’s level

idk...
they’re talking like he’s kind of a big deal
A big deal,
with this years talent pool. not so big to others though.

Yep, haven't heard anyone talking about him among the great prospects of years past
Go big or go home!! Bet big to win big!!

He is absolutely a great prospect
and is the best left tackle prospect since Long, but he is not on the same level of Jake Long and Joe Thomas yet

He's a great prospect in this draft
But he doesn’t stack up against great prospects from years past.

He is kind of a big deal
but Thomas and Long were big deals straight out of the draft

Our guards player well,
but if DeCastro is on the board and if he really is the once a decade prospect at guard, why on earth would you pass up the guy that will go to at least 10 pro bowls?

+1
They say common sense isn’t common. It doesn’t matter what your needs are, you do not pass up a great player. Arizona fans should be very knowledgeable of that.

Two drafts ago
The 9ers used both 1st round picks they had on offensive linemen. I would be totally fine with using multiple picks on OLs if the talent pool is deep enough…
"When life gives you lemons, I say f**k the lemons and bail."
It is
Top 6 or 7 all have the talent to be perrenial Pro Bowlers, and the later rounds have some very good prospects and intriguing projects. Our first two picks in this draft should be used on Offensive lineman, especially if we get Manning
