None of the Cardinals expected the team to go to overtime this many times over the past couple of seasons. Five of their last eight home games have gone past regulation, all of which the Cardinals have won. As Ken Whisenhunt said, at this point, it hardly seems lucky. This club just has a knack for winning in crunch time.
It would be much more difficult for the Cardinals to win in such close games if they didn't have the always reliable placekicker, Jay Feely. He is 7 for 7 on the season and has made three of those kicks from 40 yards or more.
On top of the big kicks, Feely becomes even more respectable for the hits he manages to lay out on the field. He is undoubtedly one of the most physical kickers in the NFL while making tackles on special teams.
Due to one of those hits, Feely was flagged for a personal foul in the form of unnecessary roughness on Sunday, but he didn't seem to agree with the penalty assessed to him.
Feely talked about the whole scenario, saying that if the special teams unit of the Dolphins hit the Cardinals' front line fast enough, Feely would "go hit him, so he can't block our guys".
"On a kickoff, I'm allowed to hit him in the back and I did that and the refs talked to me later and said 'it was a touchback, you shouldn't have done that'. I didn't know it was a touchback, I'm trying to get a block. I was just glad they didn't score. Anytime you do that you feel responsible for putting yourself in bad field position."
He later noted on Twitter that he had gone back and looked at the game tape and still completely disagreed with the call.
As for the field goal, Feely seemed to treat it as a bit of redemption for the penalty that he accrued earlier. He told Jess that he was entirely confident with the range of the last kick, as he had gone back to 61 yards out during warm-ups.
Feely, like the rest of the team, still feels that the team has plenty of work to do. "We're not where we want to be yet, but we're 4-0," he said confidently.
Isn't it nice to have a kicker with as much confidence and character as Jay Feely?
