On Tuesday, the Arizona Cardinals initiated a transaction that they did not yet announce. According to the NFL transaction report, the team waived outside linebacker Jamaal Westerman, whom they claimed off waivers previsou to the start of the regular season. The team also released fullback Jared Crank from injured reserve.
Westerman had played in only five games this season, almost exclusively on special teams. He had one tackle. He was most recently inactive for the game against the Atlanta Falcons and apparently had fallen behind undrafted rookie linebacker Zack Nash on the depth chart.
The move appears to be a first step to reinstating Beanie Wells to the active roster from the injured reserve/designated to return list.
What is interesting is that it appears that running back Alfonso Smith will remain on the roster. Smith had been getting special teams playing time, but that was about it.
When gameday comes around, either Smith or William Powell will likely be inactive.
Crank was an undrafted free agent that got hurt in the preseason. He and Westerman will be able to sign with any team if they are not claimed on waivers by any team but Wednesday at 2PM Arizona time.
