Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports indicates that the Cardinals are unhappy with the play in their secondary and may be looking to add another piece.
With the drafting of Jamell Fleming and the addition of William Gay via free agency this summer, Cardinals fans thought that the secondary would finally start to see some stabilization. Patrick Peterson had already vaulted himself into the 'shutdown corner' talks and Greg Toler was set to return from his ACL injury.
But as this season has gone on, it seems that the team is still not content. Toler is out yet again, this time with a hamstring injury. Gay has struggled at the #2 spot at times. Fleming, who received plenty of praise during training camp, is just a rookie and needs more time to develop as well.
That is why, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Cardinals have reached out to the agent of free agent cornerback Stanford Routt.
Something to watch RT @jasonlacanfora: Free agent CB Stanford Routt drawing interest from teams including Miami, Arizona and Detroit.— Darren Urban (@Cardschatter) November 7, 2012
Routt most recently played for the Kansas City Chiefs after he was released by the Oakland Raiders. The thing is, Routt hasn't had the best of years in 2012 either. According to Pro Football Focus, he has been targeted 39 times and allowed 25 receptions on the season. He allows a staggering 19.6 yards per reception, good for the most of any corner in the NFL that has played at least 25% of their team's defensive snaps.
So should the Cardinals sign him? He might be a better option than Michael Adams, who is a bit undersized for the position. Maybe it would also light a spark under William Gay. He could at least help on a minimum contract until Toler is back and healthy.
Routt used to be a pretty good player back with the Raiders and if he find some of his old touch with the Cardinals on a low salary, I say it's worth the try.
What are your thoughts? Should the Cardinals sign Routt? I set up a poll for you all to vote in.
