*Poll* Is the NFL hurting the entertainment value of the game?

I'm writing a class research paper and part of my topic is that the NFL is ruining much of the entertainment value of pro football and it's main appeal, the violence of the sport. The NFL is a violent game and the league is trying to minimize that but they are also trying to protect the players we love to watch. What is your take on this issue? Please answer the poll question below

Note - I do not plan on using any of your quotes , if for some reason I did you will remain anonymous unless requested. Thank you

Yes

I was always a football guy first, and a basketball guy second. However, since all of these rule changes, I’ve definitely made the basketball my #1 seed.

I am getting tired of seeing a penalty every time there is a big hit or pass breakup. I’ll still watch it, but I prefer the NBA now. The rules are only going to get worse too. It might lead to the downfall of the NFL. It won’t be soon, but 10-15 years down the line, who knows?

I understand why they'd want the rules in place

But it’s starting to reach the line. It’s not too bad right now, but if they go any further, it could end up hurting the league down the road.

I voted no simply b/c the way the question was phrased

Are the new rules hurting the “entertainment value” of the game? – No probably not. To me “entertainment value” implies that you’re talking about “entertaining” the casual fan who happens to catch a game every now and then but certainly doesn’t understand the ins and outs of the game. They don’t appreciate a 10-6 defensive battle, they don’t care about the battle in the trenches and they don’t spend all week or offseason breaking down roster moves concerning the 53rd player on the squad. They simply want to be “entertained” for however long the TV happens to be tuned into the game. I’m sort of the same way with movies or television. I don’t care about poor production value or bad acting or implausible story lines, I just want to be “entertained.” Quality doesn’t matter.

Now if the question was “are the new rules destroying the fabric of a game we all love?” – I know without a shadow of a doubt the answer is YES. It doesn’t take an in depth analysis or study to figure that out. Listen to any interview with almost any defensive player in the league and you’ll hear something along the lines of “yea I have to think during a play about where or how to hit a guy. These rules change the way I play the game.”

Now I will say I understand the “idea” of changing all these rules is the long term safety of the players whom we all love, but I don’t think they are going about it the best possible way.

Amen.

I also voted no. The casual fan is more entertained by a high scoring shoot out which is much more common these days, in part due to the new rules. Personally I think hiring Madonna to do the halftime show was killing the entertainment value, but that’s just me.

As for these rules that are supposedly for safety, I generally don’t care for them. I believe the league is being a bit hypocritical on the whole thing. It’s driven by money not safety. They could easily make the game safer by insisting that the better quality helmets be used rather than fining a player for trying to play the game.

Yea I agree on the equipment

I’ve read several different articles that there are helmets that are “safer” then the versions currently used but the NFL has a contract with a rival brand. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but it certainly contradicts their stated mission of making the game safer at all costs.

They have safe helmets available.

They just still allow some helmets that do not protect as well against concussion.

Even with all the new rules

The NFL is still the most exciting and entertaining sport to me. Voted No

This poll is obviously something more then a highschool project

There’s is one on everyother team page that says the exact same thing but posted under a different username in each one. We have just been used.

by cgcardzfan on Feb 22, 2012 12:27 AM MST via mobile reply actions

Why do you assume we’ve been used? The SBNation network won’t allow one user to post fanposts on multiple blogs in a short period of time. It’s one of their spamming safeguards, it assumes that if a user is posting identical/similar fanposts on multiple sites then they must be spamming and it locks the account.

If this guy wanted to reach a larger audience, he had to post on multiple sites. He never claims to be a Cards fan and he hasn’t posted links to “his site” as if he’s trying to promote something. Why can’t he just be gathering information from the largest possible audience, as he stated? What’s wrong with that?

What’s strange is that he is voting yes himself in all the polls. So his own “research” is going to include him stuffing the ballot box substantially. You also generally draw your conclusion after doing the research, rather than researching to prove your opinion, but meh. High school paper sounds about right.

Yea stuffing the ballot doesn't make alot of sense

but I don’t get the feeling this is somehow trying to “use” us.
