2012 Cards needs

ROTB, what's good? I'm covering the team needs for the NFC West over at Mocking the Draft, the SBN community for the NFL Draft. Before I put that post together, I wanted to get your input.

What would you guys say your biggest needs are? Quarterback and offensive line updates have to be at the top of the list regardless of what happens to Levi Brown in the coming months. On the defensive side, OLB and CB look like soft spots to me.

What am I missing? What are the holes you guys have to address to be in the wild card mix in 2012? What positions are in play for the first 2-3 rounds of the draft this year?

You guys have a better sense of what the Cards need this offseason; help a brother out. Thanks, and stick with us at MTD for the best draft coverage on the intertubes.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Ummm...

To be in the mix for the wild card? We’re a bit more optimistic than that, I would think.

To answer your question...

The QB spot looks to be set, unless the team wants to pursue Peyton Manning once he is cut by the Colts (it’s inevitable).

If the team can re-sign Richard Marshall, the CB spot should also be set. Greg Toler will be coming back from injury and Patrick Peterson and A.J. Jefferson will be improved. I only see them taking a CB in the first three rounds if they either can’t get Marshall back or if they select one using the BPA approach.

Offensive line seems like the biggest hole on the roster. Both tackle positions could use some work and another guard probably wouldn’t hurt either.

Outside linebacker could use some reinforcements as well. The Cardinals need to get more consistent pressure on opposing QBs.

A couple of positions that were not mentioned were ILB and WR. The Cardinals could probably use a true #2 receiver that can stretch the field. AT ILB, Lenon is getting older and Bradley, so far at least, hasn’t shown us that he’ll be worth the huge free agent deal he signed.

Those are the positions I think the team should focus on in the draft, especially in the first 3 rounds.

In short hand:

Major needs: OT, #2 speed WR, 34 OLB, OG

Minor needs: ILB, DL depth, SS (to groom as an AW replacement)

Pretty much sums it up

Oline, OLB, and WR are our biggest holes, IMO.

OT, WR, but not QB (Unless Luck or RG3 are available)

Bahahaha +1

But trade down for more picks and get more OL!

by Spikedriver on Feb 20, 2012 6:38 PM MST up reply actions   1 recs

I know it was a joke

But I would applaud the Cards picking up 3 to 4 O-linemen in this draft if they were somewhat BPA picks. If you shore up the OL, the rest of the offense will fall into place.

Yea it was an exagration (sp?) based in truth. I’d love for them to spend a draft restocking the talent pipeline of the OL, within reason of course.

Now this gets a serious +1

getting good OL in the 1st and 3rd or 4th makes good sense. I just don’t see it happening with the BPA approach. Everything would have to line up just right.

by Spikedriver on Feb 21, 2012 12:43 PM MST up reply actions

I definitely wouldn't mind seeing 2-3 OL picks.

2 OTs and a guard sound pretty good to me. In the 1st, 4th, and 6-7th rounds would make sense, and a WR in the 3rd and a pass rusher in the 5th (I still believe Schofield is going to breakout into an impact player, and Acho seems to be solid at the very least. Very intriguing tandem there). You know, if things work out that way.

by lifeinthepit00 on Mar 6, 2012 10:52 AM MST up reply actions

OT is the biggest need.

Levi Brown’s contract status could easily lead to his playing for another team next season. The Cardinals are not paying him 17 mil. Even if he is retained an upgrade at right tackle is just as important. Drafting a guard as well couldn’t hurt any.

The defense needs a serious pass rush threat at OLB. Even with Acho and Schofield emerging this is a need.

A fast receiver that can spread the defense and loosen coverage on Fitz. Doucet may or may not be gone. He was the 2nd best receiver on the team last season. Andre Roberts has had two fairly disappointing seasons. No one further down the depth chart showed up all season.

Corner is not as serious a need as many (non Cardinal fans) think with the return of Toler.

Depth on the defensive line and safety could be used too. I don’t agree with the idea that ILB is a need at this time.

Not that they’ll likely draft one but let’s put punter on the list also. Picking up an UDRFA at the position would be a good thing.

by hadrarius on Feb 20, 2012 7:13 PM MST reply actions

OMG YES

We could use a freaken punterand/or kicker

by Will Smith on Feb 20, 2012 11:23 PM MST up reply actions

This team needs a pass-rushing OLB bad!

Acho is just fine on one side, add a pass rusher opposite him and the sky is the limit with the current defensive players.

Feed The Need

The Cards should fix the O line and the Line Backer corps. I think we can sign a solid veteran FA WR to complement #11. Oh …almost forgot… Get rid of Kolb!

yes o line needs to be the major look at the draft and the free agency

but lets draft a pass rusher and make this defense elite ravnes went to the superbowl with trent dilfer TRENT DILFER make this defense a top 5 and where in playoffs easily how many times do you see a top 5 defense watching the playoff games from home

by cbiondo59 on Feb 21, 2012 8:15 AM MST reply actions

Jets were top 5 in 2011
Chargers were top 5 in 2010
Steelers were top 5 in 2009
Redskins were top 5 in 2008

Soooo not every top 5 defense is a shoe-in for the playoffs. And the Ravens were not just a “top 5” defense. They were historically dominant and arguably the best defense in the history of the league that year.

Go big or go home!! Bet big to win big!!

by Steamin' Beamin' on Feb 21, 2012 12:02 PM MST up reply actions

As I see it they need ,
Offense: OT badly, then a true #2WR, then an upgrade at OG, and for either Skelton or Kolb to play like a professional QB for 4 quarters and 16 games.
Defense: OLB (need will depend on Schofields growth), DL (whether it is NT or DE depends on where they see David Carter fitting in the future), and SS. Not CB with Petersen, Toler, Jefferson and Marshall likely re-signed they have major depth at that position.

Huge fan of the Steelers. (that includes "Steelers West")

morris clairbourne

if he fell to us would you take him, that would be a pretty sick duo of peterson and him

by cbiondo59 on Feb 22, 2012 7:07 AM MST reply actions

Probably not

We have a lot of depth at CB position, and I am anxiously awaiting the return of Greg Toler. He is not the best corner in the league by any means but he is EXACTLY what this defense asks for, a small guy who can tackle and play the scheme with discipline. I know that there are more quality players out there but we have other positions that I feel are much more pressing, so I would be pretty mad with this pick to be honest (or any CB for that matter).

I'd say yes

Unless for whatever reason Kalil, Luck, or RG3 falls to us, Claibourne would be BPA by far. Whiz would/should stick to his board and draft him. He is a top 5 talent, and despite having good CB depth, if we grab Claibourne we could groom Peterson to take over for Wilson in the future. Claibourne and Toler on the outside, with Jefferson and Marshall covering the slot, and Rhodes and Peterson manning both safety spots? Sounds like a pretty fantastic secondary to me

If the Cards have Claibourne listed in their own top 5

I don’t doubt they would not even hesitate to take him at 13.

Decastro...

Didn’t he do the most reps on the bench?

Most for a guard, yes with 34

Second overall to David Molk, a center out of Michigan. Apparently he was disappointed with 41 reps because he wanted to set a combine record.

I’d have to go with Claiborne with those two choices above. This league has evolved to be pass happy and Claiborne is an elite talent. Also, it puts us 1 step closer to drafting Mathieu next year and on our way to having an entire LSU secondary. Passing up DeCastro would be tough but I’m all in favor of BPA. No doubt DeCastro is a stud.

by cardinalbrown on Feb 26, 2012 7:56 PM MST up reply actions

I think the Cardinals will stay by their board.

I also think it should be heavily weighted toward help on the offensive line. If a guy they have top five falls to them at 13 I think they take him. I don’t have a clue what their final board might look like or really any opinion on what it should. I don’t follow college players that closely. I have corner buried way down on the needs list for this draft myself. Personally, either OL or OLB would trump it hands down.

by hadrarius on Feb 26, 2012 3:58 PM MST up reply actions

Same

I want an OL or a LB. At LB I want Ingram or Upshaw, otherwise pass.

I find it very disturbing...

…that some of the pundits and a lot of other folks are overlooking the WR position. I feel this is an absolute must. We have let go of our most productive reciever that isn’t named Larry Fitzgerald (but I was really ok with that because of his huge mental lapses), Andre Roberts is still unproven and as far as I’m concerned should be a #3 or #4 on most teams, if that. Yet for the 2nd year in a row, we’re not trying to get our hands on a #2? It was painfully obvious to me that we missed Anquan. I would just like to see a solid option out there besides 11 so that the entire devensive coverage doesn’t get rolled to his side again this year. Our luck is gonna run out with him, he’s gonna get hurt.

by Silveradoridah on Feb 26, 2012 12:44 PM MST reply actions

I hope it addressed for sure

We need someone else out there. IMO though we can’t get a top dollar seeking #2 receiver. They need to be solid, but not a borderline #1 who is going to ask for a high price tag just because we have Fitz. He makes so much money that I don’t want to see another huge contract go into the WR position. We need to spread out the salary over more positions.

I'd be ok with a WR

just not in the first round. Let’s finally give Grimm a top notch Oline prospect to work with. There are quite a few WRs that can be had in the third or later that I would be very happy with

by GreaZzy on Feb 26, 2012 2:17 PM MST up reply actions

A lot of mock drafts have the Cardinals taking a WR in the first round.

I wouldn’t be opposed to taking a wide receiver in the first but it would be about third or fourth in my preference (behind OT, OG and OLB). I agree that improving our receiving group is of great importance. The prevailing opinion seems to be that we will or should achieve that through free agency or with a later round pick. With the massive contract that Fitzgerald has just been given it does give pause to drafting another WR in the first even with the changes in rookie contracts.

by hadrarius on Feb 26, 2012 4:06 PM MST up reply actions

I really don't think we do.

We have a lot of a talent, it just doesn’t look like it when your QB’s are just above 50% completion rate and are getting sacked the second most in the league.
Fits plus a combo of Roberts, Doucet, Heap and Housler plus our run game should be good enough.

by Jesse Reynolds on Feb 27, 2012 4:17 AM MST up reply actions

I still think we need a #2 receiver

Both Roberts and Doucet never really stepped up enough to take the coverage off of Larry. I would prefer we address the #2 position in FA with someone like a Garcon or Meachum. Regardless, we can’t bring in someone who makes a ton of money for that #2 spot.
