Think about this.
The 49'ers seemingly enter the "Manning Contest" late, possibly hoping to either get Manning, or scaring Alex Smith to signing a contract (Which he probably should have signed, but he's doing what he thinks is best I guess, as well he should.)

Smith now goes to Check out Miami. To show he's not to be toyed with? Possibly as a real possibility.

Manning goes to Denver.

• hypothetical: Smith signs with the Dolphins. 49'ers have no legitimate starting qb.

at least until the draft.

I always thought Smith was good, regardless of how he's been tossed around. how great would the above scenario be. ( for the west).
