I recently completed a 7-round mock draft over at mockingthedraft.com. Representing the Cardinals, I was faced with a conundrum at round 1, pick 13. First I will show you who was off the board by that point:
Andrew Luck, QB
RG3, QB
Morris Claiborne, CB
Ryan Tannehill, QB
Matt Kalil, OT
David DeCastro, OG
Justin Blackmon, WR
Coby Fleener, TE
Fletcher Cox, DT
Michael Floyd, WR
Quinton Coples, DE
Trent Richardson, RB
That left the top three players on my board for the pick still available: Jonathan Martin, Riley Reiff, and Melvin Ingram. Busy as I was trying to trade the pick down (the top two tackles have been sliding down draft boards lately and I figured I could get one a little later), I didn't take a whole lot of time to send in the pick once I ran out of time:
Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
My reasoning for taking Martin is that he is a true, legitimate left tackle prospect. While Reiff's best asset is his aggressive play, the guy has some work to do and there is a concern that he may only ever amount to a guard in the NFL -- haven't we had enough of those guys? As for Martin, the only consistent knock I can find on the guy is that he needs to add strength to play in the NFL. Beyond that, analysts are all over the board; no one seems to have an accurate feel for where Martin or Reiff should really be as prospects.
After the pick was in, I regretted not taking Ingram but I was committed to sticking with my personal big board and chose not to second-guess myself. Sentiment around RotB has been very mixed regarding Martin and Reiff (nobody seems entirely certain of what these players are, just like the "pro" analysts) but my question to you is this:
Who would you have taken?
