With Michael Floyd becoming the Cardinals' first round selection yesterday, it is an immediate reaction of fans to begin thinking of how this player will fit in with their team and what he will be able to contribute. We know that Floyd is a big, strong and fast receiver that should be able to take some pressure off of Larry Fitzgerald, but was he the best option available to the Cardinals at #13?
As every major sporting news outlet seems to do after the first round of the draft is completed, we are now going to evaluate the Arizona Cardinals' selection of Floyd with the 13th overall pick. After the jump, get my take and then, feel free to leave your vote in the poll and in the comments section as well.
Although there are other holes on the roster that could have been filled with their first round pick (offensive tackle, pass rushing linebacker, etc.) the Cardinals stuck to their guns. They went with what they knew how to do best -- they drafted the best player available.
Rod Graves confirmed as much when he said in the presser afterwards. Floyd happened to be the highest rated player on their board by the time they were on the clock, so there was not a chance they were going to pass on him.
Fortunately, not only was Floyd the highest player on the board for the Cardinals, he was also a guy that fills an immediate need for this franchise. Andre Roberts and Early Doucet did not prove that they can be reliable #2 wide receivers in this league, so to get a guy that is legit as Floyd is a coup for the Cards. He provides short-term and long-term relief for this football team.
I know it is almost embarrassingly too early to start assigning grades (especially since Floyd still has yet to play an NFL down), but I am going to do it anyhow. I give this pick an 'A'. Floyd fills a need, he's a terrific player and he will be a member of the Birdgang for years to come.
What are your thoughts on Floyd? Does he deserve the grade of an 'A'? Tell us what you think and vote in the poll.
