Mike Sando from ESPN was up at the Seattle Seahawks voluntary workouts yesterday and was able to talk to Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll after it was all wrapped up. It was basically the typical same old information about guys looking good during the offseason workouts and players looking in good shape, but one name that popped up in regards to that had some reporters surprised.
According to Carroll, Deuce Lutui has slimmed down quite a bit. In fact, Carroll even claimed that Deuce has since become a vegan since joining the 'Hawks. If this is true, (which, Sando had his doubts), then I just have one question for Deuce: Why not sooner?
Lutui was a former second round pick for the Arizona Cardinals and has always struggled with weight issues throughout his entire NFL career. Last season, he attempted to sign a three year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals, but was forced to come back to Arizona after failing his physical due to his weight issues.
Once he signed a one year contract with the Cards, he never really found his way off the bench, sans the game against the Bengals last December.
If he wouldn't have had the weight issues back then, Lutui would be sitting pretty in Cincinnati with a big contract. Or, perhaps the Cardinals would have inked him to a big bonus. One has to question what his motivation was to start losing weight now? Does he Seattle as his last chance to show that he can keep his weight under control and still play at a high level in this league? Or does Pete Carroll truly just have a way with his players?
It really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. But nonetheless, I am glad for Deuce. If he can get a little bit healthier and find his way back onto the field, that's great. We always knew he had potential, so if he can finally start living up to it, then I'll be glad for him.
