I hate when I'm right. Not like in a sarcastic way but in a why-did-say-that-and-jinx -it kind of way. Just before the game, I look over at my dad and propethically claim "hey watch Kolb throw an interception on this first drive." Unfortunately that joke became reality. Yes, it's only one interception, heck it's only preseason! But there is something more nerve racking beyond that interception. It's all in how Kolb carries himself. A few months ago I wrote a post asking the Red Sea to give Kolb a chance, stop the hate and all the booing. Maybe it's too soon to say this, just like the booing at the Fan Fest. But I have jumped the ship, a new passenger of the Skelton Shuttle. Just like Fitzgerald charged Floyd with a DWI (Don't Want It), I'm hitting Kolb with it now. He doesn't want it. It's in his body language, he gives up to fast, can't shake his mistakes. A great quarterback must move on, have amnesia of the mistake and do something better. Now, I am sounding like every other sports writer and every football nut with a Twitter account. Well I want to focus on the positive as there was plenty in the first game. I'll be honest I made the "same as last year and this will be a long year" comments but there is shining hope to what I saw today. First lets start with the man himself, Skelton. I won't spend too much time talking about the QB because there will be a bagillion articles about it by tomorrow. Anyways Skelton looked confident, like he was having fun. He wanted to be there and hey he even completed some great passes. I will be super pleased with him under center but whatever the decision is, I trust the Whiz. Next, lets think about our Tight End play. I've been to the training camp four times this week and was impressed each time with Housler and now to see him keep the same domination in a game is encouraging. Not only that but we have Heap and soon King when he is done being injured. This can create a great spread of offense in this talented TEs. WIth the wide receivers, there is little to report. We can all agree that we have a strong base there and yes Floyd looked great. But my biggest standout on our offense was our potential in the running game. Alfonso Smith lit it up tonight. He was tough and carried the ball possessions after possession. The run game looked good already and we still have Ryan Williams and Beanie to throw in there!
Alright now it's time to think positive about the defense. I heard a HUGE amount of complaints about our defense today. This is encouraging because it means we expect a lot from them but be careful not to be disappointed yet. They didn't live up to there hype this game and boy did they have a crazy amount of miss tackles. Keep in mind two things. 1.) Adrian WIlson and Dockett were missing. 2.) They haven't been allowed to really hit anybody until now. I thought we did a good job of putting pressure on the QB and that will get better with Dockett back in the line up. David Carter looked great too which is great to see depth on our D-line. This defense will be a dominate force soon, just wait. Remember it's just preseason and we usually start of slow during the preseason. There are still things to look positive at. Although I still feel more excited and confident when our defense is out rather than our offense, I still see some great things in our TEs and running game. Don't get down Card fans, this year is filled with potential. Rise up Red Sea and keep the confidence.
