We are a day away from our first NFL Sunday of the season. Things are as they should be again. College football on Saturdays and the NFL on Sundays. Since football and betting go hand in had, why not take a look at where I would put my money were I a betting man.
My picks against the spread for Week 1 Sunday games are after the jump. But note, I am 1-0 so far, as I picked the Cowboys to cover on Wednesday night, and not only did they cover, they won outright. read on for my other picks. These are picked using the lines from Bovada.
Indianapolis Colts at Chicago Bears (-10): This is a big line, but the Bears have their defense, Andrew Luck is a rookie and Jay Cutler has Brandon Marshall to throw to. Give up the points. Pick: Bears, -10.
Philadelphia Eagles (-9.5) at Cleveland Browns: Cleveland is going to be bad, but they will be a team to keep things close. However, the Eagles have a high-octane offense that can score in a hurry. I just don't like how Cleveland tends to play teams closely, eventually dying. Pick: Browns, +9.5.
Buffalo Bills at New York Jets (-3): The preseason was unkind to the Jets. There was not a lot of confidence in the offense or Mark Sanchez. The Bills are supposed to be improved. Even still, I can't get away from the fact that the Jets are at home and do have talent. Pick: Jets, -3.
New England Patriots (-6) at Tennessee Titans: Jake Locker gets the start for Tennessee to battle the Pats and Tom Brady. Some people have the Pats rolling through the season with another perfect record. The Titans are still not up to their level. Gotta go with the Pats to cover. Pick: Pats, -6.
Miami Dolphins at Houston Texans (-13): The Texans are my pick for Super Bowl champs this year. They are going to win this game. Will it be by two touchdowns? Miami played well down the stretch and still have their defense. The line is too high for me. Pick: Fins, +13.
Atlanta Falcons (-3) at Kansas City Chiefs: This is the toughest game to take on. The Chiefs are healthy and do play well at Arrowhead. The Falcons...well...they are potentially lethal. I see Matt Cassel starting strongly. Pick: Chiefs, +3.
San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers (-5): Elite defense on the road and an elite offense at home. Remember what Baltimore did to the Niners in Baltimore? Aaron Rodgers is better than Joe Flacco. The issue is the Packers defense. Luckily, the San Fran offense is not that awesome. Pick: Pack, -5.
Carolina Panthers (-3) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Carolina favored on the road. Cam Newton in Year 2. Tampa Bay looking to have a bounce back year. They will start in Week 1 looking like it. Pick: Bucs, +3.
Seattle Seahawks (-3) at Arizona Cardinals: This is a weird line. Arizona plays historically well in Glendale. John Skelton has not yet lost a start at home. Seattle is starting a rookie and doesn't have Marshawn Lynch at full strength. Why are they favored? Pick: Cards, +3.
Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos (-2): This is essentially a 'pick'em' game. Pittsburgh will be seeking revenge for the playoff loss to Denver. However, it is Peyton Manning at the helm this time. He's not going to lose in his home debut. Pick: Broncos, -2.
