I am very glad that the cards cleaned house. It needed to happen. Evidence of this has been in the way we have missed in the top half of the draft in recent years. I think we all felt like whiz and graves were good at drafting because we seemed to find contributors in late rounds. Guys like Hightower, Breaston, LSH, Acho, Massie, but I would argue that they did a poor job drafting because of the amount of first and second rounders they have missed on. In whiz's tenure I can only think of a few hits in the first rounds and they are: PP, CC, Dwash, DRC(maybe? anyone I am missing?).
Sure, you build a roster a solid roster by building those late round gems, but the CONSISTENTLY good teams hit in the first rounds and find studs. I cannot help but dislike Floyd and it is not at all his fault. Why was he drafted? We had so many needs. As long as we have fitz, we do not need to draft WR's in the top half of round 1. Of the 4 teams left this year only crabtree and Jones were a high 1rst rounders (speaking only of WR's). I wanted us to draft DeCastro so badly. Imagine a line with DeCastro and then if we added Warmack this year. I wonder if having 2 really good guards would help the running game. I wonder if having 2 really good guards would help the QB stay clean and have a pocket to step up in. I wonder if havin..but I digress. Point being, I hope we are able to turn over a new leaf with drafting in the top rounds.
I am worried a little about Keim as he is a product of the previous system, but he was an O linemen and has stated that he wants to draft a QB every year (I really like this and I hope he is serious about it). We need to stop drafting peripheral positions high like WR, RB and CB and focus on building from the inside out. That means, OL, DL, QB's and LB'ers. the 49ers look like they have a great secondary, but I do not think they do. I just think they look great because of the way their front 7 handle their business. teams can't run on the 9ers and this makes them one dimensional, making life easy on their secondary.
The top needs in today's NFL are QB, OT, and pass rushers (whether they are lb, de, dt whatever) and I think and hope that our draft strategy should reflect this. I like how Mike Mayock says it, If you think you have a franchise QB, you pcik him, regardless of what he is rated or what round it is. That need trumps all. If you do not feel that way then look for value.
Lastly, I feel we should draft Oline before QB. How many QB's (bradford, stafford early on) do not have a chance to be successful because their O line is so bad. I have said all this to say I hope we go O line in round 1, unless we have a guy who is a franchise QB. Do not draft a QB for the sake of drafting a QB. I want Warmack.
What do you think the cards should draft in round 1?
